Physics

We have modeled the velocity-resolved reverberation response of the Hβ broad emission line in nine Seyfert 1 galaxies from the Lick Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) Monitoring Project 2016 sample, drawing inferences on the geometry and structure of the low-ionization broad-line region (BLR) and the mass of the central supermassive black hole. Overall, we find that the Hβ BLR is generally a thick disk viewed at low to moderate inclination angles. We combine our sample with prior studies and investigate line-profile shape dependence, such as log₁₀(FWHM/σ), on BLR structure and kinematics and search for any BLR luminosity-dependent trends. We …

article-in-cell simulations of a 1.6 MV, 800 kA, and 50 ns pinched-beam diode have been completed with emphasis placed on the quality of the ion beams produced. Simulations show the formation of multiple regions in the electron beam flow characterized by locally high charge and current density (“hot spots”). As ions flow through the electron-space-charge cloud, these hot spots electrostatically attract ions to produce a non-uniform ion current distribution. The length of the cavity extending beyond the anode-to-cathode gap (i.e., behind the cathode tip) influences both the number and amplitude of hot spots. A longer cavity length increases the number …

Art Therapy With Juvenile Offenders-Building On Community, Strengths And Self-Esteem: A Literature Review, Rylee Donovan May 2022

Art Therapy With Juvenile Offenders-Building On Community, Strengths And Self-Esteem: A Literature Review, Rylee Donovan

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The Juvenile Justice System differentiates itself from the adult criminal justice system by running on a rehabilitative model for youth offenders as opposed to a punishment and deterrence model. It is not uncommon that the youth placed in these facilities suffer from many mental health issues and have extensive trauma backgrounds leading to their delinquent behavior and crimes. Juvenile offenders are a population who are labeled as deviant and isolated from the world due to their behaviors often stemming from unhealed trauma. If left without care, these mental health concerns and unhealthy trauma responses may only perpetuate into their adult …

Implementation Of Remote Patient Monitoring To Improve Medication Adherence And Efficacy In Patients With Asthma And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Quality Improvement Project, Barbara A. Werner May 2022

Implementation Of Remote Patient Monitoring To Improve Medication Adherence And Efficacy In Patients With Asthma And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Quality Improvement Project, Barbara A. Werner

Dissertations

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are long-term respiratory diseases that can adversely affect an individual's quality of life and inflict financial strain on the patient, family, and healthcare system (Kocks et al., 2018). Adherence to prescribed inhaler medication is an integral component of effective disease management. Remote patient monitoring may serve as an effective means to proactively measure adherence with inhaled medications to improve respiratory health outcomes and decrease avoidable healthcare utilization (George & Bender, 2019). An inobtrusive device attaches to the metered dose inhaler to passively monitor the use and electronically transmit the information to a digital …

The Effects Of Access To Safe Abortion Methods On Women’S Health And Employment, Azka Imran May 2022

The Effects Of Access To Safe Abortion Methods On Women’S Health And Employment, Azka Imran

Theses and Dissertations

Abortion remains highly legally restricted in many developing countries, constraining women to unsafe providers. As of 2019, 23,000 women die each year due to unsafe abortions in low- and middle-income countries. These deaths are almost entirely preventable with universal access to safer abortion methods. In 2006, some regions in Peru, a country that legally restricts abortion except to preserve the mother’s life, adopted a harm-reduction approach to address this health issue within their legal framework. The model works by providing information on safely terminating a pregnancy using misoprostol, a drug generally prescribed by a gastroenterologist but available to women on …

School of Medicine Publications

Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) aggregate the effects of genetic variants across the genome and are used to predict risk of complex diseases, such as obesity. Current PRSs only include common variants (minor allele frequency (MAF) ≥1%), whereas the contribution of rare variants in PRSs to predict disease remains unknown. Here, we examine whether augmenting the standard common variant PRS (PRScommon) with a rare variant PRS (PRSrare) improves prediction of obesity. We used genome-wide genotyped and imputed data on 451,145 European-ancestry participants of the UK Biobank, as well as whole exome sequencing (WES) data on 184,385 participants. We performed single variant …

Abstract Argumentation And Answer Set Programming: Two Faces Of Nelson’S Logic, Jorge Fandinno, Luis Fariñas Del Cerro May 2022

Abstract Argumentation And Answer Set Programming: Two Faces Of Nelson’S Logic, Jorge Fandinno, Luis Fariñas Del Cerro

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this work, we show that both logic programming and abstract argumentation frameworks can be interpreted in terms of Nelson’s constructive logic N4. We do so by formalising, in this logic, two principles that we call noncontradictory inference and strengthened closed world assumption: the first states that no belief can be held based on contradictory evidence while the latter forces both unknown and contradictory evidence to be regarded as false. Using these principles, both logic programming and abstract argumentation frameworks are translated into constructive logic in a modular way and using the object language. Logic programming implication and abstract argumentation …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

An effective method that can produce a large amount of Kraft lignin with improved homogeneity is strongly desired for Kraft lignin's high-value applications and scientific advancements. Herein, a one-pot acid-catalyzed liquefaction method was developed to recover Kraft lignin directly from black liquor. The recovery rate and properties of the recovered lignin were affected by the reaction time, reaction temperature, moisture content (MC), pH, and acid categories. The highest lignin recovery rate of 75% was achieved when the concentrated black liquor (MC = 25%) reacted with methanol at pH = 7 and 160 °C for 10 min using acetic acid as …

Social Infrastructure (“Third Places”) Is Not Distributed Equally Across The U.S., Danielle Rhubart, Yue Sun, Claire Pendergrast, Shannon M. Monnat

Population Health Research Brief Series

Third places are the physical spaces in a community where people can gather to connect and share resources, support, and information. They can help support health because they promote social interaction, community trust, and resource and information sharing. This data slice shows that third places are not evenly distributed across the U.S. Results show less availability of third places per capita in neighborhoods (Census tracts) with larger shares of non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics and larger shares of residents in poverty. The authors also found that third places are in shorter supply in rural neighborhoods than in urban neighborhoods, with the …
