Detection, Occupancy, Abundance, And Mercury Accumulation Of The Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys Temminckii) In Texas, David Rosenbaum May 2022

Detection, Occupancy, Abundance, And Mercury Accumulation Of The Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys Temminckii) In Texas, David Rosenbaum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Land use practices and physical alterations of ecosystems result in habitat loss and fragmentation, while chemical alterations, such as pollutant input, reduce habitat quality and health of exposed organisms. Here, I investigated the effects of watershed- and local-scale environmental variables on the occupancy, abundance, and mercury accumulation of a threatened aquatic species (Macrochelys temminckii, i.e., alligator snapping turtle) within the southwestern periphery of its distribution. Hierarchical modeling suggested the distribution of the species is more affected by watershed-scale land-cover than local habitat, and provided a baseline estimate of average species abundance across its range in eastern Texas. Abundance …

Assessing The Live Bait Industry And The Ecological Status Of Invasive Cyprinodontiformes (Sheepshead Minnow: Cyprinodon Variegatus And Gulf Killifish: Fundulus Grandis) In Texas Streams, Erin Shepta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of invasive species is one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity. Once established, invasive species often cause irreversible ecological damage on native communities. Here, I investigated the pathway of introduction and ecological impacts of the sheepshead minnow (C. variegatus) and the gulf killifish (F. grandis). Both species were thought to have been introduced into inland Texas waters via bait-bucket releases and have caused native populations of their inland congeners to decline. While I did not find evidence that either species were being sold in inland shops, bait industry experts did reveal other potentially …

Paleopathological Analyses Of Maya Skeletal Samples To Reconstruct Childhood Health And Frailty, Kira J. Wilde May 2022

Paleopathological Analyses Of Maya Skeletal Samples To Reconstruct Childhood Health And Frailty, Kira J. Wilde

Honors Thesis

Nonadults are particularly sensitive and reactive to stress, illness, and injury and, as such, they are good proxies for examining health of past populations based on evidence of stress events recorded in their skeletal and dental remains. Skeletal data on childhood stress and frailty was derived from nineteen individuals sourced from the BVAR skeletal collection, which was excavated from Maya settlements in the Belize River Valley and dated from the Early and Late Classic (250-900 CE) periods of the ancient Maya kingdoms. Osteological analyses included age-at-death estimation for adults and nonadults, following the criteria of Buikstra and Ubelaker (1994) and …

They Tell Their Stories Still: The Use Of Storytelling And Narrative Exhibition Development To Communicate Native American Art, History, And Culture In Museums, Ian T. Cherry

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Museums and Indigenous communities have shared tensions resulting from the way Native Americans have been discussed and depicted by museums, institutions which in the past have displayed indigenous cultures and artifacts alongside extinct animals and outdated dioramas. Despite this, Indigenous cultures and museums share an emphasis on storytelling practices, both as a means of education as well as preservation. This study sought to examine the use of storytelling and narrative exhibition development in museum exhibitions focused on Native American art, history, and culture. Through the course of a qualitative comparative cross case study, three key themes were identified, being Indigenous-led …

A Laboratory Analysis Of Faunal Artifact Water Retention And Diagenesis, Gabriel Acevedo Montalvo, Alanna L. Lecher, April Watson

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Submerged artifacts can be altered by water and made more fragile. Due to climate change, groundwater tables have been slowly rising submerging artifacts, altering their makeup, and changing the information that can be acquired from them. This investigation was performed on bone artifacts excavated in 2018 in the Southeastern Florida. After identification, bones were initially weighed, submerged in water for 48 hours, weighed, dried for 48 hours, and finally weighed. The results of statistical analyses indicate that some types of bone artifacts can absorb far greater quantities of water, which alter their weight, while others are less receptive.

Development And Evaluation Of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocols For General Abdominal And Orthopedic Surgery With Focus On Preoperative Hydration And Multimodal Management In Preoperative And Postoperative Phases, Kristin Wolff, Sadie Spilker

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is described as an evidence-based, patient-centered, interdisciplinary team developed protocol utilized to decrease the patient’s stress response to surgery, maintain preoperative physiologic function, and expedite recovery (American Association of Nurse Anesthetists [AANA], 2017). Existing evidence displayed the benefits of utilizing ERAS protocols in various surgical procedures, including general and orthopedic cases. Studies showed one must employ the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative components of the ERAS protocols to achieve maximum benefits. A critical access hospital in Illinois utilized some components of ERAS protocols, mainly the intraoperative portions, but lacked the full utilization. Goals of the review …

Psychological Trauma Alters T-Lymphocyte Inflammation And Redox Through Sympathetic Mechanisms, Safwan K. Elkhatib

Theses & Dissertations

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a devastating psychiatric disorder characterized by distinctive symptom clusters, including intrusive memories (i.e., flashbacks), avoidance of related stimuli, affective changes, and hyperarousal. Strikingly, patients with PTSD face a significantly increased risk for a number of inflammation-driven pathologies, ranging from cardiovascular to autoimmune disease. Yet, the exact etiology of this increased risk remains unknown. The immune system is known to be strongly influenced by the sympathetic nervous system, and sympathetic overactivity is a hallmark of PTSD. Lymphoid organs, such as the spleen, are richly innervated by sympathetic nerve fibers which terminate near adaptive immune …

Ethical Sensitivity Of Padis Care Among Critical Care Nurses: A Mixed Methods Study, Denise Waterfield

Theses & Dissertations

Critically ill patients often experience distressful and impactful symptoms and conditions that include pain, agitation/sedation, delirium, immobility, and sleep disruption (PADIS). The presence of PADIS can affect recovery and long-term patient outcomes. An integral part of critical care nursing is PADIS prevention, assessment, and management. To better understand the complexities of PADIS care, two reviews of the literature were completed. The first is an integrative review of the use of PADIS assessment tools by critical care nurses. The second is a qualitative systematic review of the literature on the integration of care ethics and nursing workload. Ethical sensitivity of everyday …

Targeting Androgen Receptor On Glioblastoma, Nan Zhao May 2022

Targeting Androgen Receptor On Glioblastoma, Nan Zhao

Theses & Dissertations

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain malignancy. The standard treatment of this tumor is surgery, followed by radiation with concurrent and adjuvant temozolomide. GBM cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been proposed to be responsible for radioresistance. It is necessary to identify novel therapeutic agent(s) that can pass the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and enhance radiation effects. Targeting the androgen receptor (AR) is promising in treating glioblastoma (GBM) in cell culture, and flank implant models but the mechanisms remain unclear. AR antagonists, including enzalutamide, are available for treating prostate cancer patients in the clinic and can pass the BBB; thus, …

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to establish models for electron traps in Ag-doped lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7) crystals. When exposed at room temperature to ionizing radiation, electrons are trapped at interstitial Ag+ ions and holes are trapped at Ag+ ions on Li+ sites. The trapped electrons occupy a 5s1 orbital on the interstitial Ag ions (some of the unpaired spin density is also on neighboring ions). Three EPR spectra are assigned to electrons trapped at interstitial Ag ions. Their g values are near 1.99 and they have resolved hyperfine structure …

Present Status And Advances In Bladder Pain Syndrome: Central Sensitisation And The Urinary Microbiome, I Offiah, R Campbell, A Dua, L Bombieri, R Freeman May 2022

Present Status And Advances In Bladder Pain Syndrome: Central Sensitisation And The Urinary Microbiome, I Offiah, R Campbell, A Dua, L Bombieri, R Freeman

Peninsula Medical School

Key content Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) presents as a spectrum of urological symptoms with poorly understood pathophysiology. Bladder mucosal injury secondary to low grade sub-clinical infection is a possible trigger, leading to nociceptive upregulation and, subsequently, central sensitisation. Brain abnormalities associated with BPS suggest that neuropathological brain alterations exist, which may contribute to the perceived pain. Central sensitisation plays a role in the disease pathophysiology via an augmentation in the responsiveness of the central pain signalling neurons. The urinary microbiome is implicated as a trigger for the development and maintenance of BPS. Future directions to improve treatment strategies include stratification …

The Understanding Of Mycorrhizae Networks: A Historical Approach, Jake Sun May 2022

The Understanding Of Mycorrhizae Networks: A Historical Approach, Jake Sun

The Confluence

The growth of mycorrhizal fungi into plant roots used to be viewed as a parasitic relationship between plants and fungi, where the fungal symbiont benefits and the plant host is harmed. Current research elucidates a mutualistic relationship. The mycorrhizae network assists the plants by increasing the capabilities for nutrient absorption in the soil. In exchange, the fungi receive carbon supply from the photosynthetic plants for growth. Our scientific understanding of other topics like species specificity, seed germination, and co-evolutionary influence of mycorrhizae and plants has also progressed. Additionally, we now understand that the mycorrhizal mutualism is not limited to the …

Using Color To Identify Neotropical Parrots In Early Modern European Art: Recognizing Limitations And Avoiding Pitfalls Through Integration Of Scientific And Artistic Knowledge, Deniz Martinez May 2022

Using Color To Identify Neotropical Parrots In Early Modern European Art: Recognizing Limitations And Avoiding Pitfalls Through Integration Of Scientific And Artistic Knowledge, Deniz Martinez

The Confluence

Colorful Neotropical parrots were amongst the first and most frequent exotic animals to be imported by Europeans from the “New World” of the Americas, becoming key figures in what would become known as the Columbian exchange. There has been an ongoing effort to locate and identify images of Neotropical parrots in the visual record of early modern Europe, with the classification of many remaining unsettled in the scholarship. Proper identification of these images can be valuable data for reconstructing historical biogeography and transatlantic trade; especially compelling is the potential of certain “mystery parrots” in the visual record to support the …

Our Cities, Ourselves, Nan Ellin

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

Just as we are what we eat, we are where we live. We breathe the air, drink the water and inhabit the built and natural landscapes. We make our places and they, in turn, make us. While great places nourish body and soul, poor environmental and urban quality challenges us physically as well as emotionally. How might we heal our places, so that they sustain us, rather than strain us?

Stewardship Of The Built Environment In A Changing World, Robert A. Young May 2022

Stewardship Of The Built Environment In A Changing World, Robert A. Young

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

Stewardship of the built environment emerged in the mid-1990s (Young 1994) when preservationists and conservationists needed to broaden their qualitative emotion-based arguments and adopt quantitative environmental and economic evidence to counter proposals that threatened the viability of both the built and natural environments. Social, environmental, and economic (SEE) concerns at the turn of the twenty-first century formed the triptych of the metrics found within the philosophy which: “…recognizes that the preservation, rehabilitation, and reuse of existing older and historic buildings contributes to sustainable design; respects the past, present, and future users of the built environment; and balances the needs of …

Becoming Henderson: How A "Boomburg" Used A Future-Focused Strategic Plan To Become A True Urban Place, Debra March, Stephanie Garcia-Vause, Lisa Corrado

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

Since its incorporation in 1953, the City of Henderson, Nevada has grown from a sparsely populated, one-industry town into a “boomburb” comprised of numerous nationally recognized master-planned communities with an over-arching, future-focused strategic plan. This article is a case study of how this boomburb took advantage of its position in the American suburban landscape to become a true urban place. It also offers a checklist for other communities to consider as they plan for their own futures.
