The Development Of Critical Thinking Skills In Beginner Adult Esl Classrooms, Kwangmi Kim May 2022

The Development Of Critical Thinking Skills In Beginner Adult Esl Classrooms, Kwangmi Kim

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

In the U.S. education system, critical thinking skills have become essential for students in the 21st century, but they are still not fully discussed in the ESL field. This is especially true for adult learners at the beginner level. Beginner-level students lack the language to participate in critical thinking skills and that it hinders their development is a general assumption. However, critical thinking skills cannot be developed quickly in a short amount of time and students need to have opportunities to practice them often while developing language. This means that teachers of adult beginner ESL students must choose class activities …

The Nature Of Environmental Planning In The Carnué Land Grant, Desiree Loggins May 2022

The Nature Of Environmental Planning In The Carnué Land Grant, Desiree Loggins

Geography ETDs

In 1819, the Spanish Crown established Cañón de Carnué land grant as a buffer between the colonial settlement of Albuquerque and raids from Plains Apache and other nomadic tribal nations. Upon entering the U.S. period of Manifest Destiny, Carnué land grant heirs lost much of the land they stewarded as a collective to the Cibola National Forest. While the state generates laws and policies that complicate the prioritization of subsistence land uses by land grant communities, Carnué’s presence is felt as grantees reform relationships to their environment and assert their personal stake in stewardship and care. I argue that Carnué’s …

Grain-Filling Rate Improves Physical Grain Quality In Barley Under Heat Stress Conditions During The Grain-Filling Period, Hamid Shirdelmoghanloo, Kefei Chen, Blakely Paynter, Tefera Angessa, Sharon Westcott, Hammad Aziz Khan, Camilla Beate Hill, Chengdao Li

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles

Heat stress is a primary constraint to Australia's barley production. In addition to impacting grain yield, it adversely affects physical grain quality (weight and plumpness) and market value. The incidence of heat stress during grain filling is rising with global warming. However, breeding for new superior heat-tolerant genotypes has been challenging due to the narrow window of sensitivity, the unpredictable nature of heat stress, and its frequent co-occurrence with drought stress. Greater scientific knowledge regarding traits and mechanisms associated with heat tolerance would help develop more efficient selection methods. Our objective was to assess 157 barley varieties of contrasting genetic …

A Drift-Flux Model For Upward Two-Phase In Pipes With High Velocity Flows, Woochan Lee May 2022

A Drift-Flux Model For Upward Two-Phase In Pipes With High Velocity Flows, Woochan Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study proposes the evaluation and development of a drift-flux model for upward two-phase high-velocity flow in large diameter pipes. A case where the proposed model is applicable is WCD (Worst-Case-Discharge) calculations for offshore wells. WCD assumes relatively larger pipe diameters and higher flow rates than the flow experiments at laboratory conditions utilized to validate and develop most of the flow models available in the literature.

Most of the two-phase flow models describe flow regime transitions as discrete processes by assigning the required void fraction or velocity for each flow regime transition. Therefore, for each flow regime, flow-regime-dependent correlations or …

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Progression Diagnosis With Intrinsic Cellular Patterns Via Unsupervised Clustering, Pingjun Chen, Siba El Hussein, Fuyong Xing, Muhammad Aminu, Aparajith Kannapiran, L Jeffrey Medeiros, David Jaffray, Joseph D Khoury, Jia Wu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Identifying the progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) to accelerated CLL (aCLL) or transformation to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (Richter transformation; RT) has significant clinical implications as it prompts a major change in patient management. However, the differentiation between these disease phases may be challenging in routine practice. Unsupervised learning has gained increased attention because of its substantial potential in data intrinsic pattern discovery. Here, we demonstrate that cellular feature engineering, identifying cellular phenotypes via unsupervised clustering, provides the most robust analytic performance in analyzing digitized pathology slides (accuracy = 0.925, AUC = 0.978) when compared to alternative approaches, such …

An Evidence-Based Lexical Pattern Approach For Quality Assurance Of Gene Ontology Relations, Licong Cui May 2022

An Evidence-Based Lexical Pattern Approach For Quality Assurance Of Gene Ontology Relations, Licong Cui

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Gene Ontology (GO) is widely used in the biological domain. It is the most comprehensive ontology providing formal representation of gene functions (GO concepts) and relations between them. However, unintentional quality defects (e.g. missing or erroneous relations) in GO may exist due to the large size of GO concepts and complexity of GO structures. Such quality defects would impact the results of GO-based analyses and applications. In this work, we introduce a novel evidence-based lexical pattern approach for quality assurance of GO relations. We leverage two layers of evidence to suggest potentially missing relations in GO as follows. We first …

A national 2017 vector control capacity survey was conducted to assess the United States’ (U.S.’s) ability to prevent emerging vector-borne disease. Since that survey, the southeastern U.S. has experienced continued autochthonous exotic vector-borne disease transmission and establishment of invasive vector species. To understand the current gaps in control programs and establish a baseline to evaluate future vector control efforts for this vulnerable region, a focused needs assessment survey was conducted in early 2020. The southeastern U.S. region was targeted, as this region has a high probability of novel vector-borne disease introduction. Paper copies delivered in handwritten envelopes and electronic copies …

A Two-Layer Model Explains Higher-Order Feature Selectivity Of V2 Neurons, Timothy D. Oleskiw, Justin D. Lieber, J. Anthony Movshon, Eero P. Simoncelli

MODVIS Workshop

Neurons in cortical area V2 respond selectively to higher-order visual features, such as the quasi-periodic structure of natural texture. However, a functional account of how V2 neurons build selectivity for complex natural image features from their inputs – V1 neurons locally tuned for orientation and spatial frequency – remains elusive.

We made single-unit recordings in area V2 in two fixating rhesus macaques. We presented stimuli composed of multiple superimposed grating patches that localize contrast energy in space, orientation, and scale. V2 activity is modeled via a two-layer linear-nonlinear network, optimized to use a sparse combination of V1-like outputs to account …
