Streptococcus Constellatus Brain Abscess In A Middle-Aged Man With An Undiagnosed Patent Foramen Ovale, Susan G. Wager, Nina K. Bourdeau, Joshua D. Collins

Internal Medicine Articles

Brain abscess is a rare diagnosis. Common sources of infection include direct spread from otic sources, sinuses, or oral cavities, and hematogenous spread from distant sources, including the heart and lungs. Brain abscess with cultures growing oral flora species, in rare cases, may develop from bacteria in the oral cavity entering the bloodstream and then traveling to the brain via a patent foramen ovale. This report highlights a case of brain abscess caused by Streptococcus constellatus in a middle-aged man with an undiagnosed patent foramen ovale.

Herpes Simplex Virus-Associated Aplastic Anemia, Oscar A. Hinojosa, Omar Ammari Feb 2023

Herpes Simplex Virus-Associated Aplastic Anemia, Oscar A. Hinojosa, Omar Ammari

Internal Medicine Articles

Aplastic anemia is an uncommon condition defined by peripheral pancytopenia in the context of hypocellular bone marrow. In the majority of cases, it is idiopathic in origin. However, exposure to certain drugs and toxins, autoimmune processes, and viral infections have been linked to this entity. This is the case of a 56-year-old female with an acute presentation of fever, odynophagia, and dysphagia. Physical examination revealed multiple hemorrhagic ulcers affecting her oropharyngeal mucosa with regions of necrosis. Mucosal biopsy was compatible with the presence of local necrosis and keratinization. Hematological analysis showed severe peripheral pancytopenia, and the bone marrow biopsy revealed …

Anaerobic Digestion Reduces Seed Germination And Viability Of Six Plant Species From The Upper Nile Valley, Egypt, Ahmed M. Abbas, Mohamed Abdelazeem, Stephen J. Novak

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Anaerobic digestion (AD) involves the breakdown of a substrate by mixed microbial communities in the absence of free oxygen. This process has many benefits leading to the production of bioenergy (biogas) and fertilizers (bio-fertilizers). Unfortunately, the bio-fertilizer made using AD may be contaminated with weed seeds and may have the potential of infesting the fields to which it is applied. Thus, the goal of this study is to determine the effects of AD on seed germination and viability of two undesirable crop plants (Triticum aestivum and Sorghum bicolor) and four weed species of reclaimed agricultural land near Qena, …

What Is Pedagogy?: Discovering The Hidden Pedagogical Dimension, Norm Friesen, Hanno Su Feb 2023

What Is Pedagogy?: Discovering The Hidden Pedagogical Dimension, Norm Friesen, Hanno Su

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

What is pedagogy, exactly? Merriam-Webster defines it simply as “the art, science, or profession of teaching.” In contemporary academic discourse, however, pedagogy is generally left undefined — with its apparent implicit meanings ranging anywhere from a specific “model for teaching” (e.g., behaviorist or progressivist instruction) to a broadly political philosophy of education in general (most famously, a “pedagogy of the oppressed”). In this paper, Norm Friesen and Hanno Su follow the Continental pedagogical tradition in giving pedagogy a general but explicit definition. They do so by looking at how pedagogy arises both in everyday life and in school as unavoidably …

Glucose As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Sleep And Cognitive Performance, Mercedes Gremillion Feb 2023

Glucose As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Sleep And Cognitive Performance, Mercedes Gremillion

Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Y. Liu et al., 2016) reports that 34.8% of adults living in the United States of America are getting less than their recommended amount of sleep per night. Additionally, the National Sleep Foundation (2014) reports that 35% of adults have poor sleep quality. Sleep problems appear most prevalent in young adults (Hershner, 2015). Rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus are also on the rise in this specific population (Kaufman, 2002). Interestingly, research has consistently found that both sleep quantity and quality are associated with glucose levels (Ip & Mokhlesi, 2007; Padilha et …

Dynamic Mass Loss From Greenland's Marine-Terminating Peripheral Glaciers (1985–2018), Katherine E. Bollen, Ellyn M. Enderlin, Rebecca Muhlheim

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Global glacier mass balance decreased rapidly over the last two decades, exceeding mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets. In Greenland, peripheral glaciers and ice caps (GICs) cover only ~5% of Greenland's area but contributed ~20% of the island's ice mass loss between 2000 and 2018. Although Greenland GIC mass loss due to surface meltwater runoff has been estimated using atmospheric models, mass lost to changes in ice discharge into oceans (i.e., dynamic mass loss) remains unquantified. We use the flux gate method to estimate discharge from Greenland's 585 marine-terminating peripheral glaciers between 1985 and 2018, and compute …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Forest structure has a strong relationship with abiotic components of the environment. For example, canopy morphology controls snow depth through interception and modifies incoming thermal radiation. In turn, snow water availability affects forest growth, carbon sequestration, and nutrient cycling. We investigated how structural diversity and topography affect snow depth patterns across scales. The study site, Grand Mesa, Colorado, is representative of many areas worldwide where declining snowpack and its consequences for forest ecosystems are increasingly an environmental concern. On the basis of a convolution neural network model (R2 of 0.64; root mean squared error of 0.13 m), we …

Faculty Contributions to Books

In this chapter, we discuss how partners’ feelings about relationship inequity (i.e., unequal access to relationship resources, such as sex, emotional investment, finances, and family-size decisions) can cause relationship dissatisfaction. Individuals may initiate a romantic relationship with the desire to create a long-term committed relationship that is emotionally and sexually fulfilling. However, romantic relationships do not always fulfill both partners’ needs and desires, and couples often experience conflict and dissatisfaction when this happens. In this chapter, we explore both the proximate and ultimate reasons for why individuals experience dissatisfaction in their relationships. Proximate reasons include issues such as finances, cultural …
