A Novel Use Of An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (Osce) To Assess Student Learning In A Clinical Spanish Course, Rose M. Vallejo, Eric S. Kruger Feb 2023

A Novel Use Of An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (Osce) To Assess Student Learning In A Clinical Spanish Course, Rose M. Vallejo, Eric S. Kruger

HSC Education Days

Background: In an effort to meet the needs of patients with limited English proficiency and help reduce related healthcare disparities, the Physical Therapy Program at the University of New Mexico (UNM) has required its students to enroll in a clinical Spanish Course. This course was designed to align the curriculum with how students use Spanish in the clinic, emphasizing speaking and listening skills. To meet this endeavor, a flipped classroom design was used with language labs that focused on speaking and comprehension skills. Given the course design, it was recognized that a traditional written examination would not effectively assess student …

Bangladesh is blessed with abundant solar resources. Solar power is considered the most desirable energy source to mitigate the high energy demand of this densely populated country. Although various articles deal with solar energy applications in Bangladesh, no detailed review can be found in the literature. Therefore, in this study, we report on the current scenario of renewable energy in Bangladesh and the most significant potential of solar energy’s contribution among multiple renewable energy resources in mitigating energy demand. One main objective of this analysis was to outline the overall view of solar energy applications in Bangladesh to date, as …

Log-Optimal (D + 2)-Configurations In D–Dimensions, Peter D. Dragnev, Oleg R. Musin Feb 2023

Log-Optimal (D + 2)-Configurations In D–Dimensions, Peter D. Dragnev, Oleg R. Musin

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We enumerate and classify all stationary logarithmic configurations of d + 2 points on the unit sphere in d–dimensions. In particular, we show that the logarithmic energy attains its local minima at configurations that consist of two orthogonal to each other regular simplexes of cardinality m and n. The global minimum occurs when m = n if d is even and m = n + 1 otherwise. This characterizes a new class of configurations that minimize the logarithmic energy on Sd−1 for all d. The other two classes known in the literature, the regular simplex (d + 1 points on …

Alternative Polyadenylation Transcriptome-Wide Association Study Identifies Apa-Linked Susceptibility Genes In Brain Disorders, Ya Cui, Frederick J Arnold, Fanglue Peng, Dan Wang, Jason Sheng Li, Sebastian Michels, Eric J Wagner, Albert R La Spada, Wei Li Feb 2023

Alternative Polyadenylation Transcriptome-Wide Association Study Identifies Apa-Linked Susceptibility Genes In Brain Disorders, Ya Cui, Frederick J Arnold, Fanglue Peng, Dan Wang, Jason Sheng Li, Sebastian Michels, Eric J Wagner, Albert R La Spada, Wei Li

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Alternative polyadenylation (APA) plays an essential role in brain development; however, current transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS) largely overlook APA in nominating susceptibility genes. Here, we performed a 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) APA TWAS (3'aTWAS) for 11 brain disorders by combining their genome-wide association studies data with 17,300 RNA-seq samples across 2,937 individuals. We identified 354 3'aTWAS-significant genes, including known APA-linked risk genes, such as SNCA in Parkinson's disease. Among these 354 genes, ~57% are not significant in traditional expression- and splicing-TWAS studies, since APA may regulate the translation, localization and protein-protein interaction of the target genes independent of mRNA level …

Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of The East And Case Screening Tools For Elder Abuse In South Africa, Roxanne Jacobs, Nicolas Farina, Marguerite Schneider, On Behalf Of The Stride Programme Feb 2023

Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of The East And Case Screening Tools For Elder Abuse In South Africa, Roxanne Jacobs, Nicolas Farina, Marguerite Schneider, On Behalf Of The Stride Programme

Peninsula Medical School

Elder abuse is globally considered a hidden problem with great variations in its conceptualization across cultures, non-uniformity in understanding, and manifestations of abuse and neglect. Currently, there are no validated or culturally adapted screening measures for elder abuse in South Africa. The aim of this study was to test the cultural appropriateness of the Elder Abuse Screening Tool (EAST) and the Caregiver Abuse Screen (CASE) in two regions and four languages in South Africa. Using a cognitive interviewing methodology, 23 carers and 19 older adults were interviewed. Findings show that questions in the EAST and CASE are generally well understood, …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused enormous societal upheaval globally. In the US, beyond the devastating toll on life and health, it triggered an economic shock unseen since the great depression and laid bare preexisting societal inequities. The full impacts of these personal, social, economic, and public-health challenges will not be known for years. To minimize societal costs and ensure future preparedness, it is critical to record the psychological and social experiences of individuals during such periods of high societal volatility. Here, we introduce, describe, and assess the COVID-Dynamic dataset, a within-participant longitudinal study conducted from April 2020 through January 2021, …

From In-Person To Virtual: A Case Study Of An Animal-Assisted Visiting Program In A Pediatric Setting, Whitney Romine

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

This article focuses on the practical aspects of converting a successful in-person AAA program to a virtual program in a health care setting including human, canine, and physical resources; animal welfare considerations; training, infection control, and safety guidelines; and visit delivery procedures. In 1992, an interdisciplinary team at Akron Children’s Hospital founded the Doggie Brigade, an animal-assisted activities (AAA) program where volunteer therapy dogs and their handlers visit pediatric patients. The program has become a cornerstone of the hospital’s culture over its now 30-year tenure. In March 2020, the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic forced health care organizations to suspend …

Have Underground Radiation Measurements Refuted The Orch Or Theory?: Comment On “At The Crossroad Of The Search For Spontaneous Radiation And The Orch Or Consciousness Theory”, Kelvin J. Mcqueen Feb 2023

Have Underground Radiation Measurements Refuted The Orch Or Theory?: Comment On “At The Crossroad Of The Search For Spontaneous Radiation And The Orch Or Consciousness Theory”, Kelvin J. Mcqueen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

"In [1] it is claimed that, based on radiation emission measurements described in [2], a certain 'variant' of the Orch OR theory has been refuted. I agree with this claim. However, the significance of this result for Orch OR per se is unclear. After all, the refuted 'variant' was never advocated by anyone, and it contradicts the views of Hameroff and Penrose (hereafter: HP) who invented Orch OR [3].

My aim is to get clear on this situation. I argue that it is indeed reasonable to speak of 'variants' here. Orch OR is not a complete model of reality but …

Online Test Administration Results In Students Selecting More Responses To Multiple-Choice-Multiple-Response Items, Alexis Olsho, Trevor Smith, Philip Eaton, Charlotte Zimmerman, Andrew Boudreaux, Suzanne White

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

We developed the Physics Inventory of Quantitative Literacy (PIQL) to assess students' quantitative reasoning in introductory physics contexts. The PIQL includes several "multiple-choice-multiple-response"(MCMR) items (i.e., multiple-choice questions for which more than one response may be selected) as well as traditional single-response multiple-choice items. In this paper, we discuss differences in performance on MCMR items that seems to result from differences in administration method (paper versus online). In particular, we find a tendency for "clickiness"in online administration: students choose more responses to MCMR items when taking the electronic version of the assessment. Student performance on single-response multiple-choice items was not affected …

How Understanding History Through Historical Fiction Affects Gender Relations, Samantha Eastman Feb 2023

How Understanding History Through Historical Fiction Affects Gender Relations, Samantha Eastman

Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies

In supporting how understanding history through historical fiction affects gender relations, it is important to look at not only the studied value of historical teaching but also the history itself. The history of women, particularly women of color and other marginalized groups, is often neglected in the Public Education system globally. In higher-level education, educational gaps are not always addressed. Understanding what led to the core values popularly held in society today can simultaneously allow us to reevaluate them. This thesis examines three major periods in US history where women were negatively affected by the standards and beliefs of the …

When Plaquing Is Not Possible: Computational Methods For Detecting Induced Phages, Taylor Miller-Ensminger, Genevieve Johnson, Swarnali Banerjee, Catherine Putonti

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

High-throughput sequencing of microbial communities has uncovered a large, diverse population of phages. Frequently, phages found are integrated into their bacterial host genome. Distinguishing between phages in their integrated (lysogenic) and unintegrated (lytic) stage can provide insight into how phages shape bacterial communities. Here we present the Prophage Induction Estimator (PIE) to identify induced phages in genomic and metagenomic sequences. PIE takes raw sequencing reads and phage sequence predictions, performs read quality control, read assembly, and calculation of phage and non-phage sequence abundance and completeness. The distribution of abundances for non-phage sequences is used to predict induced phages with statistical …

  1. Emerging infectious diseases in wildlife can threaten vulnerable host populations. Actions targeting habitat improvements to aid population resilience and recovery may be beneficial long-term strategies, yet testing the efficacy of such strategies before major conservation investments are made can be challenging.

  2. The disease white-nose syndrome (WNS) has caused severe declines in several species of North American hibernating bats. We tested a novel conservation approach targeted at improving foraging conditions near bat hibernacula by experimentally manipulating insect density in the pre-hibernation fattening period and spring emergence recovery period. We measured foraging (feeding buzzes) and echolocation activity of little brown bats Myotis …

Using Odr Platforms To Level The Playing Field: Improving Pro Se Litigation Through Odr Design, J.J. Prescott

Book Chapters

Court-connected ODR has already shown itself capable of dramatically improving access to justice by eliminating barriers rooted in the fact that courts traditionally resolve disputes only during certain hours, in particular physical places, and only through face-to-face proceedings. Given the centrality of courthouses to our system of justice, too many Americans have discovered their rights are too difficult or costly to exercise. As court-connected ODR systems spread, offering more inclusive types of dispute resolution services, people will soon find themselves with the law and the courts at their fingertips. But robust access to justice requires more than just raw, low-cost …

Evaluation Of Gross Energy Concentration Of Neutral Detergent Fiber Contained In Feed And Fecal Samples, J. D. Stypinski, Paul J. Kononoff, W. P. Weiss

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Starch and NDF are usually assumed to contain the same concentration of gross energy (GE), but NDF is more variable in chemical composition and varies more in the extent of digestion. The variable chemical composition of NDF may have direct implications on dairy nutrition models that predict dietary GE and use this estimate for also predicting digestible energy. For example, when NDF is enriched in lignin and protein, the concentration of GE would increase, whereas NDF enriched in ash would have the opposite effect. Current nutritional models, such as the NASEM (2021) and CNCPS (6.55), assume a GE coefficient of …
