The Role Of Art-Based Pre-Performance Rituals For Collegiate Student-Athletes And Their Perceived Effects On Mental Preparation, Haylee P. Robinson May 2026

The Role Of Art-Based Pre-Performance Rituals For Collegiate Student-Athletes And Their Perceived Effects On Mental Preparation, Haylee P. Robinson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper will explore whether collegiate student-athletes at the University of Northern Colorado (UNCO) engage with art-based pre-performance rituals (PPRs) and, if so, examine their perceived effects on mental preparation prior to competition. Research has discussed traditional preparatory routines (PRs)—breathing techniques, visualization, goal setting, and problem-solving—creating a gap for understanding how creative or symbolic rituals function in the realm of collegiate sports. Combining Clifford Geertz's (1973) anthropological framework of ritualized behaviors acting as “meaning-making systems” with empirical evidence supporting art therapy, this research positions symbolic art-based interventions as PPRs, helping athletes with focus, emotional regulation, and confidence prior to competition. …

Wrky Transcription Factors: Integral Regulators Of Defence Responses To Biotic Stress In Crops, Dongjiao Wang, Ruize Zhang, Wenhui Zou, Yuanyuan Zhang, Wanying Zhao, Tingting Sun, Qibin Wu, Zheng Qing Fu, Youxiong Que

Faculty Publications

Crops are continually challenged by biotic stresses, including fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens and insect pests, which cause substantial yield and quality losses worldwide. WRKY transcription factors constitute a plant-specific and functionally diverse family that is central to immune regulation. Recent advances in genomic resources and multi-omics approaches have accelerated the identification and functional characterisation of WRKYs in crops. This review summarises the structural features and classification of WRKY genes and their genome-wide distribution across crop species. It also synthesises WRKY-centred regulatory modules that mediate resistance to major classes of biotic stress. In antifungal defence, WRKYs reinforce pattern- and effector-triggered …

Weaving Ideology: Textiles In Florentine And Venetian Painting Of The Cinquecento, Ruben Verità May 2026

Weaving Ideology: Textiles In Florentine And Venetian Painting Of The Cinquecento, Ruben Verità

Art and Art History Honors Projects

Renaissance art historical scholarship has largely ignored the political and cultural significance woven into the representation of textiles, as well as their communicative potential in paintings. In this study, I examine how textiles in their various forms carry the potential to go beyond their normative categorization as decoration. Through a comparative analysis of the paintings produced in two politically distinct polities—Florence and Venice—during the sixteenth century, I integrate Louis Althusser’s theory of ideology and Michael Baxandall’s period eye to elucidate how painted fabric was not the representation of a passive decorative ornament. Rather, it was an active and legible proxy …

Sleep Disturbances In Parkinson’S Patients With A History Of Head Injury, Melissa N. Pacheco May 2026

Sleep Disturbances In Parkinson’S Patients With A History Of Head Injury, Melissa N. Pacheco

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Sleep disturbances are among the most prevalent and burdensome non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet the contribution of prior traumatic brain injury (TBI) to these problems remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the number and severity of lifetime head injuries predicted sleep disturbances in individuals with PD. Data from 3,055 PD patients enrolled in the Fox Insight study were analyzed, including 1,593 with a history of head injury. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing head injury history, motor and cognitive symptoms, and sleep disturbances. Generalized linear mixed models tested whether head injury history and …

Examining The Effects Of Boundary Management Practices Amongst Remote Workers In A Post-Pandemic World, Rosalia G. Casas May 2026

Examining The Effects Of Boundary Management Practices Amongst Remote Workers In A Post-Pandemic World, Rosalia G. Casas

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

With remote work on the rise after a world-wide pandemic, boundary management practices have been harder to establish for employees because of the high levels of integration that is seen when working from home. Identifying the impact that boundary management behaviors have on employees is important amongst remote workers because they are more often at risk for work-life spillover and conflict because of permeability between domains. This study looks at the relationship between work arrangements and employee outcomes such as work family conflict and job satisfaction with boundary preference and family supportive supervisor behaviors as moderators. Using linear regression models, …

Inclusion And Equity In Early Childhood Special Education, Maranda Martinez May 2026

Inclusion And Equity In Early Childhood Special Education, Maranda Martinez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The present study examined equity and inclusion in early childhood special education through the lived experiences of administrators, educators, and caregivers. Despite decades of legislation, preschool students of color with dis/abilities continue to experience disproportionate identification for special education, exclusionary discipline, and limited access to inclusive settings (DHHS & DE, 2023; NCD, 2018). Grounded in Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit), this study explores how intersecting systems of racism and ableism shape early childhood educational access and opportunity.

Guided by a phenomenological approach with a transformative paradigm, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eighteen participants including administrators, early childhood special …

Beyond The System: A Critical Analysis Of Child Welfare Placement Practices For Children With Autism, Lauren Scott, Nicole Navarro May 2026

Beyond The System: A Critical Analysis Of Child Welfare Placement Practices For Children With Autism, Lauren Scott, Nicole Navarro

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition that affects an individual’s communication, social interactions, and behavior. Approximately 1.7% of children in the United States are diagnosed with ASD. Families raising children with ASD face significant challenges, including limited support systems, caregiver fatigue, and financial strain. These difficulties increase the likelihood of maltreatment, leading to higher rates of children with ASD being referred to Child Welfare Agencies. Once involved in the system, children with ASD often encounter difficulties in finding appropriate long-term foster or kinship placements, which can result in high rates of placement instability. This research seeks to identify …

Girlhood, Interrupted: An Intersectional Feminist History Of Decolonizing And Reclaiming Womanhood, Ayden Kelly May 2026

Girlhood, Interrupted: An Intersectional Feminist History Of Decolonizing And Reclaiming Womanhood, Ayden Kelly

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In the past few decades, social and political discourse surrounding womanhood and who is considered a "real" woman has led to the execration of transgender women. This work will explore how recent discourse and rhetoric surrounding who is and who is not a “real woman” can be traced to nineteenth century notions of “true womanhood” that excluded women of color. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with westward expansion, settler colonialism, residential schools, slavery, and post-emancipation serving as backdrops, this work will also analyze how ideologies of womanhood have interrupted and suppressed women of color throughout Western American …

Seeing And Doing: Disciple-Making And Moral Formation In The Gospel Of John, Stephen Yeagley May 2026

Seeing And Doing: Disciple-Making And Moral Formation In The Gospel Of John, Stephen Yeagley

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

God’s revelation in Jesus Christ both discloses and obligates, presenting an alternate view of reality to be seen and an ethical command to be done. The Gospel of John weaves the motifs of “seeing” and “doing” into a single disciple-making process. It aims to transform a person’s identity, worldview, and understanding of God before inviting ethical emulation. This sequence evokes a moral response, calling disciples to do “just as” Jesus and His Father have done, particularly in love, unity, mission, and otherworldliness. Moral empowerment occurs relationally through a third motif: “dwelling.” Using the metaphors of home, family, and friendship, John …

Divine Attachment As Discipleship: Theology And Practice, Kristina Freed May 2026

Divine Attachment As Discipleship: Theology And Practice, Kristina Freed

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Discipleship is more than obedience and behavior management; it is first and foremost a relationship with God. What kind of relationship? Kaufman hinted that it is an attachment relationship, asserting that God is the ultimate attachment figure. Unfortunately, he did not articulate a theology of attachment. While research in the psychology of religion research has shown that God is perceived as an attachment figure and that He engages in attachment behaviors with humans, a theology of attachment has yet to be developed. This paper offers a theology of divine attachment built upon textual and linguistic evidence. I also suggest a …

Discipleship Includes Both Acceptance And Change, Steve Case May 2026

Discipleship Includes Both Acceptance And Change, Steve Case

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Discipleship—following Jesus—includes both acceptance and change. Acceptance from Christ transforms the orientation of humans to follow the God who initiates and completes our acceptance. But discipleship also involves change—sometimes radical and sometimes gradual. The transformation that began with acceptance continues with change. An emphasis of one over the other, or worse, ignoring or denying one of these two dynamics, results in a skewed discipleship. Both acceptance and change remain supernatural actions in the God-human relationship of discipleship.

Effects Of Water Depth On Heart Rate, Rate Of Perceived Exertion, And Gait During Underwater Treadmill Walking In Healthy Older Adults, Edgar Gonzalez, Hayley Moore, Sage Robertson, Riley Tucker May 2026

Effects Of Water Depth On Heart Rate, Rate Of Perceived Exertion, And Gait During Underwater Treadmill Walking In Healthy Older Adults, Edgar Gonzalez, Hayley Moore, Sage Robertson, Riley Tucker

Undergraduate Posters

Some of the aging population do not meet the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines for physical activity. This is due to numerous barriers: pain, fear of injury, and limitation with mobility. Underwater treadmill (UWT) training, a specific type of aquatic exercise, supports cardiovascular and muscular health while providing low impact on the joints. Underwater treadmill allows the exercise intensity to be manipulated through the depth and the speed. However, the effects of varying immersion heights on heart rate (HR), rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and stride frequency (SF) in a healthy older adult population remain unclear. Thus, the …

Generational Interpretations Of Feminism: A Qualitative Study Of Women’S Perspectives, Molly Sabia Msw

All Student Scholarship

The current study gathered information on how women across five generations interpret feminism. Nine women were interviewed: (2 per generation, except the silent generation was 1). Understanding how women across five generations interpret feminism helps determine whether perspectives of feminism are due to a difference in time period or other variables. Based on research that has been conducted, we know that there are different views and interpretations of feminism on a broad scale; this study dove into participants’ perspectives and generational influence.

The preliminary findings of this study suggest there are some areas of the Feminist Movement that exhibit generational …

Kinesio Tape (KT) is widely used in athletic training as a non‐invasive intervention for pain, swelling, and functional limitations, yet research findings remain inconsistent.1-3,5,7This Evidence‐to‐Practice Review evaluates current literature, including a systematic review and a meta analysis to determine the clinical effectiveness of KT as a primary treatment modality compared to several established modalities. The review synthesizes foundational theory, historical development, unsubstantiated claims, evidence‐based uses, and comparative effectiveness relative to other therapeutic interventions. Findings from the guiding manuscript indicate that KT may provide small, short‐term improvements in pain and function, but it is rarely superior to established treatments such as …

Bat Tracking Metrics As Potential Predictors Of Oblique Injury In Major League Baseball Hitters, Nicholas Deangelis May 2026

Bat Tracking Metrics As Potential Predictors Of Oblique Injury In Major League Baseball Hitters, Nicholas Deangelis

All Student Scholarship

Epidemiological data shows an increase in oblique injuries in Major League Baseball (MLB) in recent years. Throughout MLB front offices, more emphasis is being placed on bat speed and hitting the ball hard as indicators of success as a hitter. This study aims to investigate whether higher values in these advanced swing metrics are predictors of oblique injury in MLB hitters. Publicly available injury data was sourced to collect a sample of hitters who suffered oblique injuries during the 2024 and 2025 MLB seasons. These injured hitters were matched with a non-injured counterpart, and a multiple regression model was implemented …

Case Report: Gangrene After One Dose Of Investigational Stannic Pentetate Radiopharmaceutical, Zin W. Myint, Riham H. El Khouli, Bryan P. Lemieux, Charles A. Kunos

Radiology Faculty Publications

Introduction – Bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals are the treatment of choice with clinical benefits for patients with extensive skeletal metastases, but they can also cause serious radiation-related adverse events (rrAEs). Management of rare and severe radiopharmaceutical rrAEs remains challenging because of incomplete knowledge of their natural history and pathogenetic mechanisms. We report a case of unlikely related gangrene following a protracted hospitalization after one dose of investigational [117mSn]tin-117m-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Sn-117m-DTPA) for treatment of extensive skeletal metastases from castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Case presentation – An 80-year-old man with innumerable painful skeletal metastases from mCRPC developed anorexia and bilateral ankle edema with serous-draining …

Trauma-Informed Approaches In Correctional Settings, Mahlet T. Habtemeskel May 2026

Trauma-Informed Approaches In Correctional Settings, Mahlet T. Habtemeskel

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Trauma‑informed care (TIC) has become an important framework for understanding and responding to the needs of incarcerated individuals, who experience disproportionately high rates of childhood adversity, interpersonal violence, and systemic trauma. Research has shown that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) early victimization shapes individual behavior patterns, justice system involvement, and emotional regulation (Ratcliff et al., 2025; Marotta, 2022). Traditional correctional models rooted in punishment, control, and surveillance often repeat the dynamics of past trauma, exacerbating emotional dysregulation, behavioral challenges, and recidivism (Desai, 2019; Slovinsky, 2023). This thesis examines the theoretical foundations, implementation strategies, and outcomes of trauma‑informed approaches in correctional settings …

Design And Synthesis Of Polyphenolic Hemibastadin Derivatives As Potential Biofilm Inhibitors, James Daniel May 2026

Design And Synthesis Of Polyphenolic Hemibastadin Derivatives As Potential Biofilm Inhibitors, James Daniel

Longwood Senior Theses

Antimicrobial agents are one of the most important therapeutics used in the medical field. With the rising prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria, new strategies have been developed to combat them, with biofilm-inhibiting agents proving to be promising candidates. A class of molecules known as hemibastadins, first discovered from marine sponges, has garnered significant attention for their biofilm properties. This thesis investigates the synthesis of three derivatives of hemibastadin-1, which incorporate structural changes meant to improve their biofilm-inhibiting properties and biological safety. The selected modifications to the structure of hemibastadin-1 include the replacement of the brominated phenols with a safer polyphenolic …

Planting The Seeds Of An “Educational Revolution”: The Origins Of Upward Bound, Jack H. Kirby May 2026

Planting The Seeds Of An “Educational Revolution”: The Origins Of Upward Bound, Jack H. Kirby

Department of History

Histories of American higher education tend to suggest that the relationship between the federal government and higher education reached its apex in the 1950s before beginning to decline in the 1960s. How, then, do we understand the creation of federal TRIO programs in the 1960s and their continued growth through the remainder of the twentieth century? TRIO programs are federally funded projects intended to expand college access for non-traditional students. Through the lens of access, this paper argues that the federal government was limited in its ability to influence higher education during the post-war period because of the highly decentralized …
