Development Of Water-Soluble Nanofibrous Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Collectors For Bioaerosol Sampling And Environmental Surface Microbial Detection, Kevin Crown May 2026

Development Of Water-Soluble Nanofibrous Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Collectors For Bioaerosol Sampling And Environmental Surface Microbial Detection, Kevin Crown

Theses & Dissertations

Environmental surveillance for pathogenic microorganisms requires sampling technologies capable of efficiently collecting biological particles from air and surfaces for downstream detection.  Current environmental sampling materials, such as fibrous aerosol filters and surface sampling swabs, are designed to capture particles effectively but often retain a portion of the collected material during extraction.  Incomplete recovery reduces the sensitivity of microbiological and molecular detection, particularly in situations where microbiological concentrations are low, such as in environmental monitoring and clearance sampling following biological contamination events.  This dissertation describes the development and evaluation of water-soluble nanofibrous sampling materials designed to improve microbial recovery while maintaining …

Comparing Two Variations Of The High Probability Instructional Sequence In Increasing Acceptance Of Novel Foods Among Children With Food Selectivity, Angelica Ibarra Donahue May 2026

Comparing Two Variations Of The High Probability Instructional Sequence In Increasing Acceptance Of Novel Foods Among Children With Food Selectivity, Angelica Ibarra Donahue

Theses & Dissertations

Escape extinction is a well-established intervention for pediatric feeding disorders (LaRue et al., 2011); however, it has been associated with undesirable side effects, including emotional responding and extinction-induced aggression (Engler et al., 2023). An antecedent-based intervention that may be less intrusive and has some evidence of increasing consumption of novel foods is the high-probability (high-p) instructional sequence. This intervention consists of presenting a child with a sequence of high-p demands that the child is highly likely to comply with, followed by the presentation of a low-probability (low-p) demand. The present study replicated and extended Trejo and Fryling (2018) by comparing …

Replication And Extension Of Kras-Associated Gene Expression Signatures In Lung Adenocarcinoma: A Cox Proportional Hazards Analysis Of Mutation Status, Gene Expression, Multi-Gene Mutation Count, And Ras De Novo Signature, Camryn Berry

Theses & Dissertations

This study evaluates the robustness and reproducibility of a previously published analysis of lung adenocarcinoma gene expression data (Schabath et al.), which examined KRAS-associated biology in relation to co-occurring STK11 and TP53 mutations. The original study used Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival analysis and gene expression signatures to assess associations between driver mutations, tumor suppressor mutations, and patient outcomes. The aim of this work is to replicate these analyses and evaluate consistency across independent datasets (Wilkerson and Selamat), with extension using Cox proportional hazards (PH) models. Two hypotheses are evaluated: (1) that the number of mutated genes increases the hazard of death, …

"First, Do No Harm": Ethical Failures And Preventive Solutions In The United States Pharmaceutical System - A Narrative Review, Rebekah R. Bailey

Honors Theses

The United States pharmaceutical system is highly advanced but faces growing ethical concerns related to drug development and marketing, overprescription, and high drug costs. This thesis examines how pharmaceutical marketing, regulatory practices, and prescribing behaviors may conflict with the ethical principle of “first, do no harm.”

Using a narrative review of interdisciplinary literature in public health, medical ethics, and applied ethics, this thesis analyzes patterns in drug development, marketing strategies, and regulatory oversight. The findings suggest that ethical issues are systemic, driven by commercial incentives, inconsistent regulatory standards, and an increasing reliance on pharmaceutical solutions. These factors contribute to overmedicalization, …

This thesis examines the implementation of sex education policy in Mississippi, a state with persistently high rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Although House Bill 999 (2011) mandates sex education in public schools, limited research has explored how this policy is enacted in practice. Drawing on qualitative interviews with high school educators, school nurses, and representatives from community-based organizations, this study investigates how sex education is delivered, how educators are prepared, and how social and institutional factors shape classroom instruction.

The findings identify four central themes: substantial variation in implementation across school districts, inconsistent and often insufficient teacher …

Selective Remembrance: Constructing Nostalgia At The Park Chung Hee Presidential Museum, Abigail Shaw May 2026

Selective Remembrance: Constructing Nostalgia At The Park Chung Hee Presidential Museum, Abigail Shaw

Honors Theses

How and why does Park Chung Hee remain so potent in the minds of South Koreans, decades after his rule? Seungsook Moon (2009) describes the phenomenon as Park Chung Hee Syndrome: a cultural condition in which Park’s image circulates between glorification, demonization, and humanization, producing an unresolved and emotionally charged field of memory. Building on this, researchers have examined how a type of “Park Chung Hee nostalgia” operates through selective remembrance of developmental success, moral discipline, and national unity, ultimately creating a positive memory and longing for semblance of his long-ended rule (Park, 2011; Podoler, 2016; Lee, 2022).

Statues and …

Theories Of Time And Free Will, Sarah Otto May 2026

Theories Of Time And Free Will, Sarah Otto

Honors Theses

This paper examines the intersection of the philosophy of time and the philosophy of free will, asking whether theories of time, such as the B-Theory or presentism, have an impact on free will beyond what they suggest about the truth or falsity of determinism. It first discusses common connections made between free will and time in past literature and dismisses determinism as a connection. The paper proceeds to provide three conditions for free will: the existence of a self, the ability of that self to inform decisions, and the ability of that decision to adequately participate in the causal chain. …

Historically, MS has struggled to provide access to nutritious food for its residents. Approximately 15.3% of households in the state were classified as food insecure between 2018 and 2020, which is significantly higher than the national food insecurity rate of 10.7% for the same year (USDA Economic Research Service, 2023). According to the National Park Service (2022), between 55% and 60% of all land area in the MS Delta region is used for agricultural purposes. However, there appears to be a missing link in the chain connecting individuals and local communities to these crops.

This qualitative study focuses on food …

Within Stillness, Yitian Chen May 2026

Within Stillness, Yitian Chen

MFA in Visual Art

This thesis explores how photography can make ongoing processes perceptible. Here, ongoing processes refer to the continuous shaping of landscape through the interaction and temporary balance of different forces, rather than a fixed or static condition. Through photographic series my work focuses on subtle traces left by different forces, including natural growth, gravity, environmental conditions, and human intervention. By introducing the concept of “trace,” the image is no longer understood as a static record of a single moment, but as a manifestation of a temporary balance among multiple forces. Rather than relying on event-based or linear narratives, my thesis artwork, …

Quiet Change, Close Attention, Tianqing Xu May 2026

Quiet Change, Close Attention, Tianqing Xu

MFA in Visual Art

This thesis explores how sculpture can reorganize the experience of viewing through material change and small scale. The research begins with a phenomenon I am curious about: viewers are often drawn to moments when objects undergo destruction or transformation. However, rather than focusing on these dramatic moments of collapse, this thesis turns its attention to processes of change that are slow, subtle, and not easily perceived. It argues that material transformation can make time visible, allowing processes that are otherwise difficult to grasp to leave recognizable and traceable clues within the work. At the same time, small scale is not …
