Modeling Alternative Futures: Scenario-Based Land-Use And Land-Cover Projections For Nepal (2030-2050), Gita Bhushal, Pankaj Lal

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Nepal has undergone significant land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes from 2000 to 2020, driven by urbanization, agricultural shifts, and broader socioeconomic dynamics. This study analyzes historical changes and projects LULC dynamics for 2030, 2040, and 2050 across four scenarios: Business-as-Usual (BAU), Rapid Urban Development (RUD), Forest Degradation and Terai Contraction (FDTC), and Agricultural Land Abandonment and Ecological Recovery (ALER). A CA-Markov modeling framework in TerrSet was used to simulate future land-use patterns, utilizing scenario-specific transition probability matrices and spatial constraints to reflect different socio-economic and policy assumptions. Under the BAU scenario, land-use change remains moderate, characterized by gradual urban expansion …

Intimacy Needs Across Different Relationship Types: The Role Of Gender And Attachment Style, Raymond P. Voss Jr., Annalise Harrison, Dylan Sczerbowicz, Michelle Drouin May 2026

Intimacy Needs Across Different Relationship Types: The Role Of Gender And Attachment Style, Raymond P. Voss Jr., Annalise Harrison, Dylan Sczerbowicz, Michelle Drouin

Health Services and Informatics Research

In this study, we examined five different intimacy needs (i.e., emotional, social, sexual, intellectual, and recreational) across several types of modern-day romantic relationships (i.e., committed, friends with benefits, one-night-stands, and polyamorous) among undergraduates (N = 240). Overall, individuals rated emotional needs as most important and social needs as least important to a fulfilling partnership. Additionally, they expected committed partners to meet 81% of their total intimacy needs but other types of partners to meet far fewer (i.e., one-night stands = 20%, friends with benefits = 35%, polyamorous = 50%). Men and women rated intimacy needs similarly across most relationship …

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Chronotherapy aims to maximise treatment efficacy while minimising side effects by scheduling treatment according to personal biological rhythms. In recent years, randomised clinical trials (RCTs) have been conducted to evaluate whether scheduled blood pressure interventions can improve patient outcomes. However, reports of time-of-day effects have attracted rebuttals and engendered methodological debate. A perfectly controlled chronotherapy trial (i.e., a trial that assesses the effect of assigning time of intervention) will never be feasible in the real world; yet some factors may be more critical to consider and control for than others. To advance the conversation about how best to evaluate the …

An Open-Source Linear Actuated-Quartz Tube Furnace With Programmable Ceramic Heater Movement For Laboratory-Scale Studies Of Combustion And Emission, Casey Coffland, Ryan Bixler, Elliott T. Gall

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Linear Actuated Quartz Tube Furnace (LA-QTF) is an instrument engineered to heat and combust materials under controlled conditions, capable of achieving flaming and smoldering states. A ceramic ring furnace is linearly actuated parallel to the length of a quartz tube. The mode of combustion depends on temperature, fuel composition, and oxygen availability; the LA-QTF regulates combustion by controlling the temperature and position of the ring furnace, and airflow within the tube. The LA-QTF can maintain temperatures between 23 °C and 530 °C for extended time periods, with stable temperatures over long-duration (∼120 min) experiments. Flow rate is dependent on …

Introduction – We present the results from the observations of the galaxy NGC 628 with the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph (PN.S) equipped with the Hα arm. With the third PN.S arm, the Hα arm, we measure the Hα fluxes, in addition to fluxes and line-of-sight velocities (LOSV) of monochromatic, spatially unresolved [OIII] 5007Å sources, in the nearly face-on disc of NGC 628. Methods – The narrow band color ([OIII] 5007Å–Hα) vs m5007 magnitude diagram does separate planetary nebulae (PNe) from single compact ionized HII regions and supernovae remnants (SNRs), which also emit in [OIII]5007 Å. The goals are to detect bona …

All Decisions

In a nonpayment proceeding, the tenant moved to amend their answer to include an overcharge counterclaim and for limited discovery. The court granted both motions, finding ample need for discovery. The DHCR rent history showed unexplained, significant rent increases, including a 241.45% jump with insufficient supporting documentation. Citing *W Pierre Assoc LLC v Harvey*, the court held that the tenant raised a question of fact as to the rent history's reliability, which was sufficient to grant discovery related to the overcharge claim in post-HSTPA cases, thus not requiring a fraud claim to overcome the six-year lookback rule.

Combating Β-Lactamase Resistance: From Inhibitor Design To Substrate Evolution, Lian M.C. Jacobs May 2026

Combating Β-Lactamase Resistance: From Inhibitor Design To Substrate Evolution, Lian M.C. Jacobs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

β-lactamase production by bacteria is a major mechanism of antibiotic resistance. These enzymes hydrolyze β-lactam antibiotics, preventing them from binding to and inhibiting PBPs. Although new β-lactam scaffolds and inhibitors are continually introduced into the clinic, resistance often emerges within a few years. Therefore, the development of cross-class inhibitors with novel scaffolds is critical to mitigate this resistance. In parallel, a deeper understanding of the structural and mechanistic basis of β-lactamase resistance is essential. Together, these approaches provide an effective strategy for combating antibiotic resistance.

The first project addressed the need of effective cross-class β-lactamase inhibitors capable of targeting SBL …

A Dye-Sensitized Photo-Supercapacitor Enabled By Commercial Carbon-Based Intermediate Electrodes, Victoria Bishop, Wei Wei

Michigan Tech Publications

A dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) employing a Titania (TiO₂) photoanode sensitized with N3 dye was integrated with a carbon-based supercapacitor to form a three-electrode photo-supercapacitor device. In this architecture, a double-sided carbon-based electrode functions as a dual-purpose intermediate electrode, serving simultaneously as the counter electrode for the DSSC: facilitating efficient redox electrolyte regeneration and as an electrode in an electric double-layer capacitor for energy storage. Four commercially available carbon-based materials, namely, graphite, activated carbon, mesoporous carbon (MC), and graphene, were systematically evaluated as intermediate electrodes to assess their influence on device performance. Prior to integration, the standalone DSSC and supercapacitor …

An Integrated Framework For Memory-Centric Analysis: From Trace Collection To Co-Design, Dhruv Gajaria, Prajwal Challa, Yasodha Suriyakumar, Joseph Manzano, Nathan Tallent, Andrés Márquez

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

IntroductionThe memory wall phenomenon—where advances in processor performance significantly outpace those in memory subsystems-poses a fundamental challenge for contemporary computing systems. In memory-bound applications, memory subsystem behavior dominates performance, yet existing analysis approaches present significant limitations: detailed microarchitectural simulators require days to weeks to simulate modest workloads; hardware performance counters provide only aggregate statistics that obscure temporal and spatial access patterns; and scaled simulation approaches face challenges in capturing contention effects, bandwidth saturation, and interference patterns that emerge at larger scales. These limitations reflect a processor-centric design philosophy—in both performance analysis tools and system co-design methodologies—that is increasingly misaligned with …

Indonesia Spatial Planning Criteria Promotes 70% Terrestrial Protected Areas In Papua, Devi Manuhua, San Afri Awang, Wahyu Wardhana, Lies R. W. Faida

Forest and Society

Papua is renowned as a world-class tropical wilderness, rich in both floristic and linguistic diversity. Proactive efforts to protect this region have been implemented by Indonesian government through a land allocation policy designating at least 70% of the area as protected. However, the extent to which protected areas (PA) criteria are implemented at a spatial scale remains very limited. Therefore, this study aims to link multi-criteria PA policies with Papua's landscape conditions, focusing on land allocation for the expansion of terrestrial PA at a spatial scale. Geographic information system (GIS)-multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) method played a crucial role in analyzing PA …

Fleeting Roots, Jonathan Tirado May 2026

Fleeting Roots, Jonathan Tirado

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Onomichi, Japan carries a quiet crisis. Across its hillside arcades, akiya (abandoned properties) outnumber active storefronts, hollowing a town once defined by its dense, walkable culture. Fleeting Roots proposes a decentralized arts and fabrication campus woven through ten existing buildings along the Hondori Arcade, treating vacancy not as decay but as raw material for civic return.

The project rejects the museum impulse that often shadows preservation work. Heritage here is not frozen for tourist consumption. It is reactivated as a site of mutual cultural production, where local craft, visiting practice, and everyday commerce share the same vernacular shell. A precise …

In vivo microscopy (IVM) has shown great promise to improve early detection of epithelial precancer, but it suffers from fundamental trade-offs that limit the resolution, field-of-view (FOV) and depth-of-field (DOF). Here, we present PrecisionView, a compact, deep learning-enabled endomicroscope that breaks these constraints and achieves 20 mm2 FOV and 500 µm DOF with 4 µm resolution, representing approximately 5× increase in FOV and 8× larger DOF compared to conventional IVM with similar resolution. PrecisionView integrates a deep learning-optimized phase mask and real-time reconstruction, enabling rapid in vivo assessment of two key hallmarks of cancer: epithelial cell nuclear morphology and subsurface …

Storyteller: Training-Free Narrative Grounding And Forseebench: Evaluation For Long Form Audio Description, Seung Hyun Hahm May 2026

Storyteller: Training-Free Narrative Grounding And Forseebench: Evaluation For Long Form Audio Description, Seung Hyun Hahm

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Understanding long-form video requires tracking events, motivations, and relationships across time rather than describing isolated frames. However, existing video--language models (VLMs) and audio description (AD) systems often generate short-horizon descriptions that omit narrative context, causal intent, and story continuity, limiting accessibility for blind and low-vision (BLV) audiences. This thesis investigates how long-form AD can be grounded in narrative memory without relying on expensive supervised training pipelines or heavily curated annotations.

We propose StoryTeller, a training-free retrieval-augmented framework for long-form audio description. Instead of depending solely on frame-level perception, StoryTeller summarizes observations into structured narrative facts that capture who did what …
