Effects Of Thoracic Spine Mobilization On The Lumbar Spine Rotation Angle During Trunk Rotation, Toru Yasuda, Ryota Yoshida, Hironobu Kuruma

Asian Journal of Physical Therapy

Objectives: Limitations in the thoracic spine movement can cause excessive lumbar rotation and back pain; however, it is unclear whether increasing thoracic rotation reduces excessive lumbar rotation. This study aimed to examine the effect of thoracic spine mobilization on the rotation angle of the lumbar spine during trunk rotation. Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers participated in this study. We identified and then mobilized three restricted vertebrae in the thoracic spine through a physical examination using a facet joint traction mobilization technique. Rotational movements of both the thoracic and lumbar spine were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Measurement items included: (1) lumbar rotational …

The aim of this study was to determine whether a rural lifestyle leads to high bone density in young adulthood and lowers the rate of bone loss later in life. Over 1,500 men and women aged 20 to 65 years with equal numbers of Hutterites, rural non-Hutterites and non-rural non-Hutterites were followed longitudinally. Yearly blood samples, bone measurements and regular assessments of activity levels and dietary intake were obtained. The project will determine whether bone density during young adulthood and the rate of later bone loss among the Hutterite population is similar to other populations, and whether …

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates the value of a framework for processing data on body acceleration as a uniquely valuable tool for diagnosing diseases that affect gait early. As a case study, we used this model to identify individuals with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and distinguish them from those without PAD. The framework uses acceleration data extracted from anatomical reflective markers placed in different body locations to train the diagnostic models and a wearable accelerometer carried at the waist for validation. Reflective marker data have been used for decades in studies evaluating and monitoring human gait. They are widely available for many …

Pcl And Dmso2 Composites As Biomaterials For Additive Manufacturing, Jae-Won Jang Jan 2024

Pcl And Dmso2 Composites As Biomaterials For Additive Manufacturing, Jae-Won Jang

Dissertations and Theses

Tissue engineering provides a viable solution to address the shortage of organ donors for allograft transplants. Its primary objective is the replacement or regeneration of damaged tissues which is developed by combining living cells, a scaffold, and a bioreactor. Among these components, the scaffold serves as an artificial extracellular matrix (ECM), which plays a pivotal role in supporting cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and overall tissue development. Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as three-dimensional (3D) printing, emerges as a promising method for scaffold fabrication due to its capability to create complex and repeatable geometries.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) has been one of …

Grand Challenges In Membrane Transport, Modeling And Simulation, Jacob Monroe, Chidambaram Thamariselvan, Ranil Wickramasinghe

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Today, membranes play an increasing role in separation processes across a wide range of industries, including water treatment, biomedical applications, bioseparations, and gas separations (Yeom et al., 2022). Numerous different membrane types exist, which can be broadly categorized as either porous or non-porous, where pores may be or may not be filled with a separate phase from the bulk solvent and membrane phases. In addition, various driving forces exist - pressure, concentration, electric field, etc.—that lead to transport across the membrane. For a porous membrane, solute transport is usually governed by convective flow through the pores. Micron-sized pores are used …

Tracking Charge Migration With Frequency-Matched Strobo-Spectroscopy, Kyle A. Hamer, Aderonke S. Folorunso, Kenneth Lopata, Kenneth J. Schafer, Mette B. Gaarde, François Mauger

Faculty Publications

We present frequency-matched strobo-spectroscopy (FMSS) of charge migration (CM) in bromobutadiyne, simulated with time-dependent density functional theory. CM + FMSS is a pump-probe scheme that uses a frequency-matched high harmonic generation (HHG)-driving laser as an independent probe step, following the creation of a localized hole on the bromine atom that induces CM dynamics. We show that the delay-dependent harmonic yield tracks the phase of the CM dynamics through its sensitivity to the amount of electron density on the bromine end of the molecule. FMSS takes advantage of the intrinsic attosecond time resolution of the HHG process in which different harmonics …

Justice And Equity In Urban Water Allocations And Conservation Solutions: A Case Study Of Non-Traditional Housing Dwellers, Matthew J. Mangoni Jan 2024

Justice And Equity In Urban Water Allocations And Conservation Solutions: A Case Study Of Non-Traditional Housing Dwellers, Matthew J. Mangoni

Master's Theses

Access to water is a human right. With droughts becoming more frequent and severe, equitable and just access to fresh water is a critical concern for policymakers and regulators. Allocation-based (AB) water rates are used widely to incentivize conservation. Previous authors document benefits of this approach for single family homes (SFH) in urban areas. People living in homeowners’ associations (HOAs) or multi-family homes and renters – commonly grouped as non-traditional housing (NTH) tend to face barriers to understanding or controlling water use and costs. This thesis investigates the equity and effectiveness of 1) AB water rate structuring and 2) a …

Five-Step Guide To Writing About African Children: A Satirical Homage To Decolonizing Our Minds And Challenging Stereotypes, Randall Yesmont, Bright Alozie Jan 2024

Five-Step Guide To Writing About African Children: A Satirical Homage To Decolonizing Our Minds And Challenging Stereotypes, Randall Yesmont, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay is a work of satire, in the style of the late Binyavanga Wainaina’s “How to Write About Africa” and Bright Alozie’s “How to Write About Nigeria” and “How to Write About African Women.” In this satirical homage, we explore the pesky stereotypes that often accompany Western perceptions and writings about African children. We hope that stereotypes satirically highlighted in this piece shed light on the dangers of a single story while advocating for the recognition of the humanity, agency, voices, and dignity of African children.

Through a critical exploration of preclinical and clinical studies via PubMed and Google Scholar, the impact of these vitamins on cancer therapy was analyzed, unraveling their complicated mechanisms of action. Interestingly, vitamins impact immune function, antioxidant defense, inflammation, …

Mid-Infrared Dust Reverberation Mapping Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Ashley Frank Jan 2024

Mid-Infrared Dust Reverberation Mapping Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Ashley Frank

Theses

One of the main components of the unified model of AGN (active galactic nuclei) is the circumnuclear dusty torus. The torus often obscures our view of the ''central engine" of the AGN, therefore it is important to understand its size and structure. Reverberation mapping can be used to constrain the size of the torus, and relies on the response of the torus dust emission to the variations in the driving optical/UV emission of the accretion disk. The time lag between the optical emission and the infrared response can be used to constrain the distance between the inner region of the …

Soil Improvement Using Fungal Mycelium Of Trichoderma Virens And Construction Techniques Of Mud Dauber, Park Joon Soo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Traditional ground improvement techniques involve high energy consumption and expensive and invasive earthworks. To develop sustainable ground improvement techniques, extensive research has explored biological processes and strategies. This dissertation identifies two organisms, fungal mycelium and mud dauber wasp, as sources of utilization and inspiration for the development of sustainable soil improvement techniques.

Filamentous fungi can form a root-like interconnected complex network known as fungal mycelium. Fungal mycelium can extend through soil pores and secrete hydrophobic compounds, binding soil particles and increasing soil water repellency. This dissertation conducted experimental studies to investigate the effects of fungal mycelium on hydraulic and mechanical …
