Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electricity theft can cause economic damage and even increase the risk of outage. Recently, many methods have implemented electricity theft detection on smart meter data. However, how to conduct detection on the dataset without any label still remains challenging. In this article, we propose a novel unsupervised two-stage approach under the assumption that the training set is contaminated by attacks. Specifically, the method consists of two stages: (1) a Gaussian mixture model is employed to cluster consumption patterns with respect to different habits of electricity usage, and with the goal of improving the accuracy of the model in the posterior …

Wearable Ai, Bystander Notice, And The Question Of Privacy Frictions, Zahra Takhshid
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) technology and the widespread availability of large language models (“LLMs”), wearable AI devices and designs for new hardware have surged like never before. While wearable AI was traditionally marketed for health and fitness purposes, many of the emerging products are multifunctional. These features can jeopardize the privacy of bystanders in addition to the consumers. Product designers are thus facing a dilemma: ensuring third-party privacy or guaranteeing convenience and a user-friendly design. This Article argues for mandating “privacy frictions” to function as both bystander notice and consent for wearable AI devices with audiovisual …

Wu-tou decoction (WTD), a traditional Chinese medicine prescription, is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It works by controlling intestinal flora and its metabolites, which in turn modulates the inflammatory response and intestinal barrier function. Small molecular compounds (SM) and polysaccharides (PS) were the primary constituents of WTD extract. In this work, a model of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) in rats was established and treated with WTD, SM, and PS, respectively. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to examine the regulatory impact of the various groups on the disturbance of the gut flora induced by RA. Further, since PS cannot be …

Increased renewable energy penetration of an electrical grid generally creates more supply fluctuations. Traditional base-load systems, such as nuclear power, can be retrofitted with thermal energy storage (TES) systems to meet supply demand fluctuations. These systems can store energy during low electricity demand times to allow the reactor to operate at constant power while simultaneously fluctuating electricity output. The control of these systems is of vital importance and Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a leading control mechanism for optimized production plans with forecast information. This study combines high fidelity RELAP5-3D models with MPC to control an experimental benchtop system that …

A Culturally Grounded Approach To Nepalese Grandmothers’ Caring Work: Developing Dohori As A Narrative Methodology, Kusum Bhatta
The Qualitative Report
The social sciences have a growing seismic shift from prioritising positivist, objective, and generalizable knowledge to accepting subjective qualitative knowledge. This has given rise to various art-based methods that leverage multi-sensory storytelling/narrative. To further advance innovation in qualitative narrative methods, I will present the Dohori narrative, an indigenous Nepali poetic storytelling method for narrative research with older grandmothers doing care work. I start by presenting a discourse on Dohori to understand better the history and traditional and cultural underpinning of the method. Provided a brief background to Nepali grandmother immigrants and then discussed the promise of Dohori as a form …
Association Between Interpretation Flexibility And Emotional Health In An Anxious Sample: The Challenge Of Measuring Flexible Adoption Of Multiple Perspectives, Julie L. Ji, Elske Salemink, Bethany A. Teachman
Association Between Interpretation Flexibility And Emotional Health In An Anxious Sample: The Challenge Of Measuring Flexible Adoption Of Multiple Perspectives, Julie L. Ji, Elske Salemink, Bethany A. Teachman
School of Psychology
Interpreting ambiguous situations in a rigidly negative manner contributes to emotional disorders. Although negative interpretation biases have been well studied in relation to anxiety and depression, the relationship between interpretation flexibility (vs. rigidity) and emotional health remains understudied. The present study is a secondary analysis to test the hypothesis that higher interpretation flexibility is associated with better emotional health, as indicated by lower anxiety and depression levels, and higher quality of life. Here, interpretation flexibility focuses specifically on the ability to recognize multiple possible interpretations within and across ambiguous situations. Using baseline data from N = 939 high trait-anxious community …
A Test Of The Pioneer Factor Hypothesis For Silent Gene Activation, Jeffrey Hansen
A Test Of The Pioneer Factor Hypothesis For Silent Gene Activation, Jeffrey Hansen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Transcription factors (TFs) activate silent genes by binding to and opening heterochromatic instances of their motifs. While we rely on this process for cellular reprogramming, we have an incomplete understanding of which TFs are capable of recognizing inaccessible instance of their motifs and what parameters are important for this activity. My thesis work aimed to address these two questions. The leading model for silent gene activation is the pioneer factor hypothesis (PFH). The PFH states that pioneer factors (PFs) are qualitatively unique TFs that can bind to and open DNA and subsequently recruit non-pioneer factors (nonPFs) to activate expression. We …

“Your Brain Isn’T All Backwards”: Asexual Young Women’S Narratives Of Sexual Healthism, Anna Sheppard, Emily S. Mann, Carla A. Pfeffer
The Qualitative Report
Scholarship on asexuality is a growing but underexplored area in the social sciences. In the U.S., asexual people (i.e., individuals who do not experience sexual attraction) navigate a society in which being a sexual person is regarded as a normal and even compulsory aspect of human health and subjectivity. Utilizing an asexual subsample from a broader study of queer young women, this article integrates Foucault’s theorizing around sexuality and repression with scholarship on healthism to examine how discourses of sexual healthism operate among asexual young women in the U.S. South. We argue that in rejecting theories of sexual repression and …

Low Complexity Radio Frequency Interference Mitigation For Radio Astronomy Using Large Antenna Array, Zaid Bin Tariq, Teviet Creighton, Louis Percy Dartez, Naofal Al-Dhahir, Murat Torlak
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
With the ongoing growth in radio communications, there is an increased contamination of radio astronomical source data, which hinders the study of celestial radio sources. In many cases, fast mitigation of strong radio frequency interference (RFI) is valuable for studying short lived radio transients so that the astronomers can perform detailed observations of celestial radio sources. The standard method to manually excise contaminated blocks in time and frequency makes the removed data useless for radio astronomy analyses. This motivates the need for better radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation techniques for array of size M antennas. Although many solutions for mitigating …
Flume Experiment Evaluating Shear Stresses Under Turbulent Flowing Conditions, Angie N. Castillo, Jesse Ramos
Flume Experiment Evaluating Shear Stresses Under Turbulent Flowing Conditions, Angie N. Castillo, Jesse Ramos
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Shear stresses are produced when a fluid is flowing along a solid boundary layer. Shear stress measurements can be used to evaluate sediment and soil erosion transportation in natural bodies of water, like rivers. With this information, engineers improve risk assessment evaluation on earthen water- retaining structures and mitigate the dangers of overtopping.
Inside the COAS Wave Lab water tank, a flume was built with a 5% slope, simulating a riverbed at an angle. At the 20ft marker, three shear stress sensors were installed in a working envelope. AC Drivers were used to control the flow from four pumps that …
Design Parameters Of A Power Management System For An Emerging Medical Artificial Intelligence Of Things (Maiot) Technology, Liam Hunte
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Though concurrent growth of technologies can sometimes lead to discord, often they lead to the meshing of ideas to form a new frontier of study, collaboration, and innovation. Recently, the inelastic collision of technologies has begotten a new frontier, called Medical Artificial Intelligence of Things (MAIot), edge-inferencing, encompassing the knowledge from Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), just targeted toward medicine using physiological data. Further, MAIoT is a discipline-focused subcategory of Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) where feature detection from sensor data is done by a Machine Learning (ML) model programmed on a microprocessor unit (MPU); sequentially, inference …

Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Modern aerospace systems need a new approach for swarm consensus that is distributed, operates with local knowledge, and uses simple agents. The overarching goal of our research is to advance our understanding of bed bug behavior and use this understanding to improve performance of aerospace swarms. The first step is to understand individual bed bug response to stimuli (CO2, heat, light) and individual neural characteristics, before considering group dynamics. The objective of this proposal to establish a collaboration between biologists and engineers at ERAU to design and implement a test platform to enable new data collection for bed bug movement. …
A New Biologically Inspired Consensus Algorithm Protocol For Multi-Agent Systems Based On Turtle Hatching, Austen Pallen
A New Biologically Inspired Consensus Algorithm Protocol For Multi-Agent Systems Based On Turtle Hatching, Austen Pallen
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
New technologies rely on multi-agent systems (MAS’s) and their ability to achieve consensus. Current distributed consensus approaches, however, have narrow applicability and are only resilient to a small subset of faults. Biologically Inspired Design may provide the inspiration needed to develop more applicable consensus algorithms. Our hypothesis is that if the biological behavior of synchronous turtle hatching is evaluated, then a more resilient and novel consensus algorithm can be developed, because current turtle hatching requires resilient consensus for species survival. To test this, an Agent-Based, ANYLOGIC model was developed based on the turtle behavior and tested against 1, 5, 10, …
