Creating Connections: Bed Bugs To Uav Swarms, Austen Pallen, Bryan Watson
Creating Connections: Bed Bugs To Uav Swarms, Austen Pallen, Bryan Watson
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Modern aerospace systems need a new approach for swarm consensus that is distributed, operates with local knowledge, and uses simple agents. The overarching goal of our research is to advance our understanding of bed bug behavior and use this understanding to improve performance of aerospace swarms. The first step is to understand individual bed bug response to stimuli (CO2, heat, light) and individual neural characteristics, before considering group dynamics. The objective of this proposal to establish a collaboration between biologists and engineers at ERAU to design and implement a test platform to enable new data collection for bed bug movement. …
A New Biologically Inspired Consensus Algorithm Protocol For Multi-Agent Systems Based On Turtle Hatching, Austen Pallen
A New Biologically Inspired Consensus Algorithm Protocol For Multi-Agent Systems Based On Turtle Hatching, Austen Pallen
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
New technologies rely on multi-agent systems (MAS’s) and their ability to achieve consensus. Current distributed consensus approaches, however, have narrow applicability and are only resilient to a small subset of faults. Biologically Inspired Design may provide the inspiration needed to develop more applicable consensus algorithms. Our hypothesis is that if the biological behavior of synchronous turtle hatching is evaluated, then a more resilient and novel consensus algorithm can be developed, because current turtle hatching requires resilient consensus for species survival. To test this, an Agent-Based, ANYLOGIC model was developed based on the turtle behavior and tested against 1, 5, 10, …

Using Fourier Analysis To Reveal Pulsation Frequencies Of Roap Stars, Divyeshwari P. Vansadia, Stephen Gillam
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The goals of this investigation are to determine the principal pulsation and get an understanding of the atmospheric fluctuation of TYC 3218-888-2, a rapidly oscillating chemically peculiar A-type star (roAP star). The Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA-RM) telescope was used to carefully collect time-series photometry. Our investigation's basic premise holds that by analyzing the frequency spectrum of the star's light curve, we may interpret crucial information about the star's upper atmosphere and photosphere.
We analyzed the star's pulsation through the use of multi-aperture photometry (AstroImage J) and Fourier Analysis techniques (Period 04). The determined principal pulsation of TYC …

The Optimization Of A Model Pipeline For Rapidly Rotating Stars, Jackson Ladd Sackrider, Jason P. Aufdenberg
The Optimization Of A Model Pipeline For Rapidly Rotating Stars, Jackson Ladd Sackrider, Jason P. Aufdenberg
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Stellar intensity interferometry observations of stars at 416 nm complement Michelson interferometry observations in the near-infrared where stellar surface intensity gradients (e.g., limb darkening) are weaker. Intensity gradients due to gravity darkening in rapidly rotating stars are also expected to show higher contrast at 416 nm relative to the near-infrared. Using Python, Fortran, Perl, and KornShell scripts, we created a software pipeline to model stellar photospheres of rapidly rotating stars and compare predictions at these wavelength regions. The pipeline highlighted in this poster can produce model images, visibility predictions, and synthetic spectra.

Attending To Pre-Service Teachers’ Professional Agency: Lessons From A Graduate Course On Inquiry And Advocacy, Leslie Duhaylongsod, Megin Charner-Laird, Francesca Pomerantz
The Journal of Advancing Education Practice
Preparing pre-service teachers to enact professional agency is both critical and challenging, given how often school district mandates and assessment practices are in conflict with what these candidates have learned and come to believe about teaching and learning. Research also suggests that agency may lead to higher retention rates among teachers. Though the literature on pre-service teachers and the development of agency is growing, the number of studies looking specifically at coursework and agency is limited. This study is an exploration pre-service teachers’ perceptions of agency before and after completing a graduate course designed to support the enactment of agency …

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice
The purpose of this reflection is to expand the knowledge on the retention of early Black female faculty by exploring their challenges and triumphs in dismantling Whiteness and developing an authentic sense of belonging in the academy. In higher education, Black women experience marginalization at the intersection of anti-black racism and sexism. Faculty of color experience racial microaggressions, excessive workloads and service expectations, and their expertise is seldom recognized. Despite these challenges, marginalized faculty authentically persist and find a sense of belonging within the ivory tower by building mentorship relationships, departmental DEI efforts, opportunities for innovation, and cultivating Black sisterhood. …
Integrating Physics Informed Neural Networks With The Finite Element Method For Solving Inverse Problems, Anthony Lore Starleaf
Integrating Physics Informed Neural Networks With The Finite Element Method For Solving Inverse Problems, Anthony Lore Starleaf
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This research introduces a novel framework called Finite Element Physics-Informed Neural Networks (FE-PINNs) for solving complex problems in engineering. Building upon the strengths of traditional Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) and the Finite Element (FE) method, FE-PINN offers an efficient and accurate approach for solving challenging inverse problems in civil engineering. PINNs use neural networks to approximate physical systems while enforcing conformance with the systems' governing equations as a soft constraint during the optimization process, which allows system parameters to be updated alongside the weights of the PINN. FE-PINN extends this approach by using PINNs to solve the system of equations …

Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Image processing and analysis play pivotal roles in materials science, manufacturing, and non-destructive testing. By processing computed tomography (CT) images, researchers can derive physical characteristics of an object, such as its boundary, surface, and internal features. Identifying different areas of an image and the edges between them is known as segmentation. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) utilizes CT scans to study objects and materials in an efficient and nondestructive manner. Partnering with PNNL, this Research Experience for Undergraduates project at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University aims to quantify the uncertainty of edge detection methods applied to CT scans of machined objects. Measuring The Ion Temperature Of A Plasma Jet Using A Two-Dimensional Optical Fiber Array For An Improved Spectroscopic Analysis To Study The Possibility Of Pre-Heating During Plasma Compression, Mario Avila, Byonghoon Seo Ph.D.
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Abstract:
Outlined is our arrangement to measure the ion temperature of a plasma jet via Doppler-broadening spectroscopy to investigate the possibility of pre-heating plasma during plasma compression. The jet, formed by puffing a controlled amount of Argon or Nitrogen gas into Embry-Riddle’s cylindrical vacuum chamber and then ionizing it via high-voltage electronically switched capacitor banks, is regulated to undergo magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) current-driven instabilities and magnetic reconnection, and is ultimately terminally collided with a gas cloud [1]. Ion temperature measurement of plasma is inferred by spectroscopic analysis [2] [3]. To improve the fidelity of our spectroscopy, the presented method implements a …
