Tables Of Power: Ritualised Feasting And Political Negotiation In Irish History, Elizabeth Waters, Elaine Mahon May 2026

Tables Of Power: Ritualised Feasting And Political Negotiation In Irish History, Elizabeth Waters, Elaine Mahon

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper examines feasting in two specific contexts: the sagas of the early Irish medieval period, and the diplomatic history of the Irish state. Far from being decorative or incidental, feasting is shown to be a system of commensal politics that converts uncertainty into opportunity as well as symbolic capital. In the examples explored, the shared meal is shown to be not just a convivial gathering but a means through which authority is demonstrated, crises negotiated or averted, and relationships renewed.

“Read This - And Keep It Carefully”: Emergency Recipes In Ireland (1939–1945), Gary Thompson

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Cookbooks published at a time of armed conflict contain practical advice on managing food shortages paired with patriotic nationalistic zeal. This paper examines the advice given to Irish households on cookery and household management in the pages of cookbooks and pamphlets published between 1939 and 1945, a period of political, economic and food supply upheaval colloquially referred to as The Emergency in Ireland. The recipes, advertisements and household advice reflect a growing crisis when the outcome of war was unknown to authors, while, in the domestic sphere, food and fuel shortages were increasingly impacting the home cook. Official food supply …

The Second Life Of Information, Thomas D. Haley May 2026

The Second Life Of Information, Thomas D. Haley

Florida Law Review

Information permeates every aspect of modern life. It is the price we pay for access to online services and the form in which we embody creative works. Law and policymaking tend to focus on first-order uses and transactions; information for access serves as the paradigmatic example. But information enjoys a robust second life—one that constitutes the true value and power that drives firms’ decisionmaking—as assets. Once aggregated and assetized, the power and risk associated with information increases exponentially.

To explore the implications of information’s second life, this Article introduces the concept of “untethered information.” Assetization depends on severing the connections …

The Model Constitutional Convention: A Simulated Exercise In Constitutional Reform, Stefanie A. Lindquist, Neta Borshansky

Florida Law Review

This Essay explains how the Model Constitutional Convention (MCC) was structured and the amendments it produced. It reflects on the impact the event had on the participants and on how a national movement to host MCCs across the country might unfold. It concludes with thoughts about how the MCC might be improved in future years to simulate more closely the reality of legal, social, and political conditions in the United States—conditions that have the potential to shape constitutional reform efforts.

How Constitutions Die, Richard Albert May 2026

How Constitutions Die, Richard Albert

Florida Law Review

There are three models of constitutional time in the world—each a shorthand for how and when constitutional life begins and ends: the grenade, the hourglass, and the sundial. In much of the world, the grenade model prevails. Under this model of constitutional time, the lifespan of a constitution is unpredictable: chaos reigns amid lawlessness, disorder, and even violence as shocks, internal or external, explode without warning to spark a constitutional refounding. By contrast, the hourglass model of constitutional time prioritizes rules, order, and transparency: political elites simply flip the hourglass in compliance with law to restart the constitutional clock and …

Predicting The Outcome Of Ischemic Hepatitis With Real-Patient Data Using Machine Learning Tools, Christiana Beard, Madison Utterback, Olcay Akman, Priya Kohli, William M. Lee, Aditi Ghosh

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Ischemic hepatitis (IH) results from shock-related conditions that impair oxygenated blood flow to the liver, causing hepatocyte death. Diagnosis relies largely on clinical history due to the absence of specific diagnostic tests and limited ability to predict outcomes. This study applies machine learning methods to real-world IH patient data to improve outcome prediction. Biomedical indicators analyzed include creatinine, international normalized ratio (INR), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and bilirubin. Data were collected from multiple U.S. centers through the Acute Liver Failure Study Group (ALFSG), a multicenter network focused on this rare condition. We implemented logistic regression, regression tree methods …

Method Of Fast Accessing Reallocated Sectors, Randi Walz, Jian Qiang, Kai Chen, Brian Edgar, Yu Hang Chen

Defensive Publications Series

In current HDD design, reallocation is a remapping between logical and physical address, the reallocations are treated as LLRW error, and extra disc requests, seeks are needed to process reallocations. The reallocation count is visible through SMART which could show unhealthy status to users. Although reallocations can be cached by current data caching scheme, it is temporary, and not available if users turn off caching feature, or enabling FUA mode. In this method: The reallocated sectors are kept in a reserved cache space since power up, and to be accessed through cache nearly permanently unless # of reallocated sectors exceed …

Distance Calculations Of Faint Dwarf Galaxies Through Surface Brightness Fluctuations, Blake A. Richesin, Guinevere Herron, Burçin Mutlu-Pakdil

Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters

This study aims to test the effectiveness of the surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) technique in determining the distance to three distinct galaxy targets. The targets were dwarf galaxies Tucana B, Kamino, and Hedgehog. The technique used image masking, Sérsic profiles, and convolving with point spread functions (PSF). The study showed that redder, quenched galaxies are prime candidates for the SBF technique, while bluer, star-forming galaxies are more difficult to constrain the distance of.

The Cannabis Motivation Spectrum: Comparing Medical, Recreational And Dual Intent Users, Addyson Domian, Jacob Borodovsky May 2026

The Cannabis Motivation Spectrum: Comparing Medical, Recreational And Dual Intent Users, Addyson Domian, Jacob Borodovsky

Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters

There is a lack of a standardized definition of “medical” cannabis use in the healthcare industry, which has led to an informal, user-reported definition of medical use. Consequently, individuals who use cannabis for both medical and recreational reasons (dual intent) are not always differentiated from pure medical or pure recreational users. This study compares self-defined medical only and dual intent motivational groups relative to recreational only users to better understand how these groups differ by analyzing sociodemographic and use patterns, clinically relevant factors, and claimed cannabis-related benefits. Using data from the Qualtrics Cannabis Exposure Index survey instrument of 8836 adult …

Task Sharing Of Tele-Mental Health Interventions In Primary Care: Formative Assessment Using Implementation Science, Frances Chu May 2026

Task Sharing Of Tele-Mental Health Interventions In Primary Care: Formative Assessment Using Implementation Science, Frances Chu

Dissertations

Primary care frequently cares for patients with mental health concerns. Tele-mental health (TMH) interventions are becoming used as alternatives to the traditional methods of mental health care delivery. However, implementation of these interventions has met with uneven implementation success. Task sharing is a care model that trains less specialized health care workers to perform tasks typically done by specialized health care workers. Few studies have examined the combination of Task sharing and TMH intervention for the management of mental conditions. This dissertation project utilized implementation science methodology for formative assessment of task sharing of TMH interventions. The goals of the …

Graduate recruitment messaging increasingly incorporates labor market information (LMI) to communicate the value of master’s programs, yet little is known about how marketing and admissions professionals decide when and how to use this data. This qualitative single-case study examines how recruitment and marketing professionals at a public research institution leverage LMI when framing the value of master’s programs with varying career outcomes. Drawing on interviews and analysis of recruitment materials, the study explores how data related to salary, job growth, and employer demand are selectively incorporated into recruitment messaging, shaping how program value is communicated to prospective students. While research …

Same-Subject Induction Experiences For Elementary Music Teachers: Teacher Efficacy Beliefs, Experiences Of Isolation, And Job Satisfaction, Wendy Tams Hickman May 2026

Same-Subject Induction Experiences For Elementary Music Teachers: Teacher Efficacy Beliefs, Experiences Of Isolation, And Job Satisfaction, Wendy Tams Hickman

Theses and Dissertations

This survey study seeks to explain the relationships between elementary music teachers' experiences with same-subject induction support and those teachers' feelings of teacher efficacy, experiences of isolation, and job satisfaction. Independent variables came from latent class groupings of same-subject induction support for beginning elementary music teachers. Teacher background variables were also included as controls. Three- and four-step regression models helped provide understanding about how the relative set of predictors--teacher background variables, isolation levels, induction experiences, and interaction terms--predicted the three outcomes. Initial regression analyses showed that the number of years of teaching elementary music predicted efficacy and levels of isolation …

Intersectionality And Insurgent Citizenship: Women Of Color Feminism In 1970s New York City, Genevieve Bonner Davis May 2026

Intersectionality And Insurgent Citizenship: Women Of Color Feminism In 1970s New York City, Genevieve Bonner Davis

Dissertations and Theses

Not since the phrase "Ain't I a Woman" has African American women's intellectual leadership and insight been as visible and influential as the contemporary concept of intersectionality. Like Sojourner Truth's iconic intellectual intervention in the anti-slavery movement, intersectionality has experienced a similar trajectory of dissolution, distortion, appropriation, and popularization. Since its articulation by Black legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality theory has had a bumpy road to its buzzy, if controversial, status in the firmament of twenty-first-century political thought.

This thesis traces the origins of intersectionality theory through three distinct but intertwined phases. Phase one is the genealogy of …

Measuring Modulation Envelope Of A Pound Drever Hall Feedback Loop, Josh S. Lee May 2026

Measuring Modulation Envelope Of A Pound Drever Hall Feedback Loop, Josh S. Lee

Physics and Astronomy Undergraduate Senior Theses

From improving qubit readout to real world medical technology, fast and ultrasensitive electrometry has many real world applications. The primary goal of the overarching project is to improve ultrasensitive charge detection using methods involving cavity-embedded Cooper pair transistor (cCPT) devices. This project hopes to accomplish this by using the gate-tunability of the cCPT to reduce the 1/f-noise, a type of low-frequency noise that can interfere with the cCPT’s measurement operability. By using a Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) feedback loop-inspired scheme that can adjust the cCPT gate, this project hopes to improve the stability of the cCPT’s resonant frequency against the 1/f-noise, in …

The Effect Of The Chemical And Microbiological Structure Of Biofilms On The Growth Of Oyster Spats In The Hudson River, June L. Rahman May 2026

The Effect Of The Chemical And Microbiological Structure Of Biofilms On The Growth Of Oyster Spats In The Hudson River, June L. Rahman

Student Theses and Dissertations

Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are sessile suspension feeding bivalves that improve water quality through filtration and reef formation, making them crucial to the health oftheir native ecosystems. Establishing oyster habitats is a priority in Hudson River restoration efforts following significant population declines due to over harvesting, habitat loss, and pollution. Oyster spat production and attachment are influenced by biofilms; however, it is not well known how biofilm properties, such as bacterial taxonomic composition and EPS content, affect oyster larval attachment in the Hudson River. We hypothesized that intertidal surfaces, which are more exposed sunlight, would develop photosynthetic biofilms that enhance oyster …

Traveling Wave Fronts For Sir Epidemic Models With Nonlocal Dispersal And Delayed Effects, Ashley Evette Embry May 2026

Traveling Wave Fronts For Sir Epidemic Models With Nonlocal Dispersal And Delayed Effects, Ashley Evette Embry

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates traveling wave solutions for two classes of delayed nonlocal dispersal susceptible--infected--recovered (SIR) epidemic models incorporating biologically realistic mechanisms such as delayed infectivity, delayed dispersal, nonlocal transmission, demographic turnover, and nonlinear incidence effects. These models extend classical spatial epidemic frameworks by allowing long-range population movement through nonlocal dispersal operators and incorporating temporal memory into both diffusion and transmission processes. The primary objective is to establish the existence of traveling wave solutions connecting disease-free equilibria to endemic states and to characterize threshold conditions governing epidemic propagation. The simultaneous presence of nonlocal dispersal, multiple delays, and non-monotone nonlinear incidence terms …

From Theory To Practice: Investigating Process Safety Skills Acquisition And Bridging The Industry Readiness Gap, Brittany Butler-Morton May 2026

From Theory To Practice: Investigating Process Safety Skills Acquisition And Bridging The Industry Readiness Gap, Brittany Butler-Morton

Theses and Dissertations

Process safety management is vital to companies operating highly hazardous materials or processes, and it is of interest to the engineering community as poor process safety judgments can have catastrophic results. Process safety judgments consider more than the prioritization of safety, as they are often influenced by elements like production, spending, reputation, and time. As such, it’s important to prepare engineering students nearing graduation for the complexity of these judgments and narrow the Theory-to-Practice gap for students entering industry. This work sought to identify 1) how the Theory-to-Practice gap is manifesting in process safety judgments, and 2) how the application …

Do Rural-Urban Disparities Translate Into Nursing Complexity At Hospital Admission? Evidence From A Single Tertiary-Care Pediatric Hospital In Italy, Manuele Cesare, Gianfranco Damiani, Gloria Anderson, Jessica Preziosi, Rosemary Frasso, Leonardo Villani, Nursing And Public Health Group, Vittorio Maio, Antonello Cocchieri

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Rural-urban disparities are well documented in pediatric healthcare, influencing access, service organization, and outcomes. However, whether these differences extend to the domain of nursing care remains unclear. This study examined the association between degree of urbanization and nursing complexity among children admitted to a single tertiary-care pediatric hospital, comparing clinical, organizational, and nursing characteristics across geographic groups.

METHODS: Routinely collected electronic nursing documentation and hospital administrative records were retrospectively examined in a tertiary-care pediatric hospital in Rome, Italy. Children aged 2 to < 18 years were consecutively included. Degree of urbanization was defined using the ISTAT-derived DEGURBA classification. The study outcome for nursing complexity corresponded to the number of nursing diagnoses documented at hospital admission. Descriptive analyses and a multivariable negative binomial regression model assessed the association between urbanization and nursing complexity, adjusting for age, sex, DRG weight, number of medical diagnoses, and chronic conditions.

RESULTS: Among 1652 pediatric hospitalizations, those from rural areas showed a higher clinical burden, with significantly higher …

Systemic Inflammation And Subclinical Myocardial Injury: A Systematic Review Of High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein And High-Sensitivity Troponin In Asymptomatic Adults, Vasisht Karri, Janvi N. Patel, Russell L. Kennedy May 2026

Systemic Inflammation And Subclinical Myocardial Injury: A Systematic Review Of High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein And High-Sensitivity Troponin In Asymptomatic Adults, Vasisht Karri, Janvi N. Patel, Russell L. Kennedy

Student Publications

Background: High-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) detects low-level cardiomyocyte injury and predicts incident heart failure (HF), coronary events, and mortality in individuals without overt cardiovascular disease (CVD). High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) captures systemic inflammatory burden and is associated with cardiometabolic risk and future atherosclerotic events. Whether systemic inflammation is consistently linked to subclinical myocardial injury across populations and how this relationship should inform preventive cardiology has not been synthesized in a single, clinically oriented systematic review. Objective: To systematically review epidemiologic, clinical, and translational evidence connecting systemic inflammation (hs-CRP and related pathways) with subclinical myocardial injury (hs-cTn) in asymptomatic adults, and …
