Predicting The Intention To Use Paytech Services By Islamic Banking Users, Ana Irimia-Diéguez, Gema Albort-Morant, Maria Dolores Oliver-Alfonso, Shakir Ullah
College of Business and Economics
Purpose: This study aims to identify the factors that could explain the intention to use Paytech services within an Islamic banking context. The authors use an extended version of the technology acceptance model to develop a causal–predictive analysis. Design/methodology/approach: The research model and hypotheses were tested by applying partial least square-structured equation modeling to data collected from 214 users of Islamic banking in Saudi Arabia. Findings: The results show that perceived trust has a highly significant direct effect on the intention to use Islamic Paytech services, whereas perceived risk has a significant indirect effect on IU. Research limitations/implications: Internet banking …

Electron effective mass is a fundamental material parameter defining the free charge carrier transport properties, but it is very challenging to be experimentally determined at high temperatures relevant to device operation. In this work, we obtain the electron effective mass parameters in a Si-doped GaN bulk substrate and epitaxial layers from terahertz (THz) and mid-infrared (MIR) optical Hall effect (OHE) measurements in the temperature range of 38–340 K. The OHE data are analyzed using the well-accepted Drude model to account for the free charge carrier contributions. A strong temperature dependence of the electron effective mass parameter in both bulk and …

The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) is a hot, dry, and dust-laden feature that advects large concentrations of dust across the Atlantic annually to destination regions in the Americas and Caribbean. However, recent work has suggested the SAL may be a contributing factor to high-impact drought in the Caribbean basin. While the SAL's characteristic dust loadings have been the focus of much previous research, fewer efforts have holistically engaged the co-evolution of the dust plume, its associated convective environment, and resultant rainfall in Caribbean islands. This study employs a self-organizing map (SOM) classification to identify the common trans-Atlantic dust transport typologies …

Sacred Nutrition: Asserting Indigenous Sovereignty And Rights Of Women And Nature To Ensure The Right To Food In The United States, Mariana Chilton, Phd, Mph
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
This Paper is a provocation to move beyond a standard human rights and right to food framework to encourage scholars, activists, and political leaders to engage in full throttle societal transformation. Ending hunger in the United States demands nothing less. The modern human rights framework is enshrined in the modern nation-state system that is rooted in the transatlantic slave trade, colonization, and genocide.1 Three primary ways in which these roots took hold were through land theft, rape, and starvation. Hence, to assert that integrating the right to food and freedom from hunger into nation-state constitutions or into national plans to …

Life In A Fishbowl: Space And Environmental Enrichment Affect Behaviour Of Betta Splendens, Ronald G. Oldfield, Emily K. Murphy
Faculty Scholarship
The public has expressed growing concern for the well-being of fishes, including popular pet species such as the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens). In captivity, male Bettas behave aggressively, often causing injuries and death if housed together. As a result, they are typically isolated in small fishbowls, which has been widely criticised as cruel. To investigate the impact of keeping Bettas in these conditions, we recorded the behaviour of individual males in containers of different sizes that were either bare or enriched with gravel, large rocks, and live plants. When male Bettas were housed individually in small bowls (0.5 L) …

This paper evaluates the compatibility of five different machine learning (ML) algorithms for analyzing datasets extracted from solar cell devices. The selected ML algorithms span a range of complexity, from linear regression and polynomial regression models to random forest (RF), neural network, and a hybrid version of the latter two. The algorithms underwent testing with and without hyperparameter optimization to tune the model parameters. The study investigated the expected increased computational cost resulting from hyperparameter optimization, with improved ML accuracy. Additionally, five distinct datasets were utilized to measure the performance of the ML models across different dataset characteristics, including dataset …
What Factors Affect Employment Decisions Of Employees And Job Seekers Of Different Modalities: Remote, Hybrid, Or In-Person?, Diana White
JWU Dissertations & Theses
What factors affect employees’ and job seekers’ employment decisions? Are these factors different for remote, hybrid, or in-person workers? There are many challenges in recruiting and retaining employees, especially in the times when the labor force demand has far exceeded the supply. The primary framework of the study was grounded on Herzberg’s two-factor theory with internal motivation factors and external hygiene factors as values employees considered as different workplace traits such as work-related conditions (Jehanzeb and Mohanty, 2018), leadership behaviors (Wells and Peachey, 2011; Vanderpyl, 2012), internal Human Resources practices (Gardner et al., 2011), and organization reputation (Baer et al., …

The Planetary Habitability Model (Plahab); V1, Ramses Ramirez
Laboratory of Planetary Habitability Atmospheric Models
Energy balance models (EBMs), alongside radiative–convective climate models and global climate models (GCMs), are useful tools for simulating planetary climates. Historically, planetary and exoplanetary EBMs have nearly all been 1D latitudinally dependent models with no longitudinal dependence. PlaHab is the first EBM that can simulate N2–CO2–H2O–H2 atmospheres of both rapidly and synchronously rotating planets, including Mars, Earth, and exoplanets located within their circumstellar habitable zones. PlaHab includes physics for both water and CO2 condensation. Regional topography can be incorporated. Overall, EBM results are consistent with those of other 1D and 3D models, …

Structural Information On Supramolecular Copper(Ii) Β-Diketonate Complexes From Atomic Force Microscopy And Analytical Ultracentrifugation, Jonathan S. Casey, Ashley R. Walker, Xianglin Zhai, Jayne C. Garno, Paul S. Russo, Andrew W. Maverick
Faculty Publications
Supramolecular Cu(II) complexes were prepared from two trifunctional β-diketone ligands. The ligands (CH3Si(phacH)3 and CH3Si(phprH)3, represented by LH3) contain three aryl-β-diketone moieties joined by an organosilicon group. The complexes have the empirical formula Cu3L2, as expected for combinations of Cu2+ and L3-. Several metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) [Cu3L2]n are possible (n = 1-10); a dodecahedron (Cu30L20; n = 10; estimated diameter of ca. 5 nm) should be the most stable because its internal bond angles would come closest to ideal values. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), performed on samples deposited from solution onto mica substrates, revealed a distribution of …

The safe and secure implementation of increasingly complex features is a major challenge in the development of autonomous and distributed embedded systems. Automated design-time procedures that guarantee the fulfillment of critical system properties are a promising approach to tackle this challenge. In the European project XANDAR, which took place from 2021 to 2023, eight partners developed an X-by-Construction (XbC) design framework to support developers in the creation of embedded software systems with certain safety, security, and real-time properties. The design framework combines a model-based toolchain with a hypervisor-based runtime architecture. It targets modern high-performance hardware, facilitates the integration of machine …

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating, inflammatory condition of apocrine sweat glands. Black patients are disproportionately affected, a finding largely attributed to lower socioeconomic status (SES) in the literature; yet, most HS studies include majority White cohorts. We present, to our knowledge, the first retrospective review of an entirely Black patient population living in low-income neighborhoods diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) to identify potentially modifiable factors related to disease severity and outcomes. We reviewed charts of Black patients with an encounter for HS from 2010-2020 in the New Orleans University Medical Center database. Hurley stage III (HSt III) disease was …

Team Presentation Theory I: The Five Formats, Daniel Usera, Alex Fuller
SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
Team presentations are prevalent in education and business, yet there is a notable scarcity of scholarly research and discussion on effective delivery practices. The authors bridge this gap by introducing a theoretical foundation for team presentations, enabling further exploration. They first establish prerequisites that a team must address regarding the speech outline, member roles, and transition techniques. They then categorize five distinct team presentation formats and explore each one’s strategic advantages, disadvantages, and application contexts. Lastly, the authors offer strategic implications for practitioners and proposals for future academic inquiries into the realm of team presentation theory.

The Uneven Legal Geographies Of Nutrition Entitlement Programs In The United States. Realizing Or Hindering The Right To Food?, Joshua Lohnes, Mackenzie Steele
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Unlike many countries across the world, the United States government does not formally recognize the Right to Food in law. However, it funds and administers nutrition entitlement programs that play a significant role in mitigating hunger and food insecurity across the country. Reflecting on the socio-political dynamics that shape the legal spaces of nutrition entitlement in different places, this Article explores the uneven geographies of the Right to Food in two other countries (South Africa and Ecuador) and then turns its focus to the United States. This Article offers an overview of the two most extensive nutrition entitlement programs (SNAP …

Prevent Phishy Business: Comparing California’S And The United Kingdom’S Age-Appropriate Design Code To Protect Youth From Cybersecurity Threats, Morgan Comite
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Cybersecurity is the safeguarding of computer systems and networks against information disclosure, theft, or damage to users’ hardware, software, or electronic data, as well as disruption or misdirection of the services computers and networks provide. Knowing privacy would be breached due to the impact of COVID, in 2020, the United Kingdom got ahead of the game and passed rules/regulations requiring online services to protect children under the age of eighteen from scams, phishing, and security attacks. However, currently, the United States does not have a sufficient uniform privacy law governed to protect children under the age of eighteen from cybersecurity …

Protecting The Promise To The Families Of Tuskegee: Banning The Use Of Persuasive Ai In Obtaining Informed Consent For Commercial Drug Trials, Jennifer S. Bard
San Diego Law Review
This is the first article to call for a ban on the use of AI technology designed to influence human decision-making, “Persuasive AI,” for the purpose of recruiting or enrolling human participants in drug trials sponsored by commercial entities. It does so from a perspective of precaution, not fear. Advances in Artificial Technology that can assist human decision-making have tremendous potential for good. It makes the case for doing so based on both the substantial risk of harm to the decision-making process and the ineffectiveness of intermediate regulatory measures. This Article looks directly at Persuasive AI, a type of AI …
