Is It Still Gendered? Political Discourse Among Adolescent Legislators, Kevin G. Lorentz Ii, Stephanie Zarb, Connor J.S. Sutton, Mary Herring May 2026

Is It Still Gendered? Political Discourse Among Adolescent Legislators, Kevin G. Lorentz Ii, Stephanie Zarb, Connor J.S. Sutton, Mary Herring

Journal of Political Science Studies

More women are serving in American legislatures than ever before. However, research demonstrates that even when included, women’s formal political participation in legislatures often is undergirded by gender norms and forestalled by considerable institutional barriers, especially partisanship. Given the challenges of traditional gender norms and increasing numbers of women legislators over the past twenty years, our study examines whether political discourse remains gendered in a formal environment. Using a mock legislature of adolescents, we find that women still face substantial barriers that result in their taking fewer speaking turns than their male counterparts, although when women do participate, they act …

Here-, There-, And Every Where-: Exploring The Role Of Pronominal Adverbs In Legal Language, David Chandler May 2026

Here-, There-, And Every Where-: Exploring The Role Of Pronominal Adverbs In Legal Language, David Chandler

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Legal language is distinctive and sometimes difficult to understand. One type of word that appears to be part of so-called ‘legalese’ is the pronominal adverb (PA). The purpose of this thesis is to examine the prevalence of PAs in legal registers compared to more general registers of contemporary American English to determine the extent to which these words are distinctly legal. The study will also explore why different types of PAs may be (in)frequent in specific legal registers to better understand their use. The frequency of PAs was extracted from corpora that are designed to represent six registers of English …

Community-Based Education For Hypertension Management Through Lifestyle Modifications – An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Elizabeth Mkroyan May 2026

Community-Based Education For Hypertension Management Through Lifestyle Modifications – An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Elizabeth Mkroyan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hypertension is a highly prevalent chronic disease and a leading contributor to numerous life-threatening complications, including cardiovascular disease and stroke. Time constraints during routine clinical encounters often limit providers' ability to deliver comprehensive education on nonpharmacologic strategies. Community-based educational programs can help close this gap by teaching people about changes they can make to their lives in safe places like a Church. This evidence-based practice project aims to evaluate whether community-based education on lifestyle modifications can improve self-efficacy, self-care practices and behaviors and have high rates of participant satisfaction with the intervention.

History Of Midwifery In Arkansas: The Attrition Of Midwifery, Koria Torshia Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past few years, Arkansas has gained a spotlight due to an increase in maternal and infant mortality. This increase has been so massive that Arkansas has ranked within the top five in the nation for maternal and infant mortality rates for several years. A large percentage of the maternal and infant deaths in Arkansas are prevalent in the Black and rural community. This is an issue that has plagued the state of Arkansas for over a hundred years, with mortality rates highly affecting the same demographic of people. How did the practice of midwifery become a remedy for …

What’S In A Name? Much Ado About “War-Sustaining” Objects, W. Casey Biggerstaff May 2026

What’S In A Name? Much Ado About “War-Sustaining” Objects, W. Casey Biggerstaff

International Law Studies

Recent conflicts have renewed the long-running debate over the legality of attacking economic objects under the law of armed conflict. Within that discourse, observers frequently frame the controversy in relation to an abstract U.S. “war-sustaining” position. Critics often characterize the United States as advancing a distinctive and overly permissive interpretation of military objectives that allegedly departs from the targeting criteria set forth in Article 52(2) of Additional Protocol I. This article challenges that characterization. It concludes that the United States does not apply a separate “war-sustaining” lex specialis to economic objects. Rather, U.S. practice reflects a contextual application of Article …

Three-Dimensional Shape Cues Affect Human And Artificial Recognition Systems Differently, Mikayla Cutler, Luke D. Baumel, Joseph Tocco, William Friebel, George K. Thiruvathukal, Nicholas Baker Dr.

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Humans and neural networks use shape and texture information differently. While humans weigh shape heavily in their ultimate classification decision, neural networks are more biased towards texture cues. Many tests of shape vs. texture bias have focused on shape recognition from an object’s external contour. However, shape information is also conveyed through internal contours, shading, and attached shadows, especially when an object is viewed from noncanonical perspectives. Using models from ShapeNet, we created datasets of 120,000 texture-substituted images of objects from many viewpoints with and without shading and attached shadows. We tested humans’ and several neural networks’ ability to classify …

Crisis Severity In Sportswashing: Examining The Effects On Host Nations, Erika J. Schneider, Courtney D. Boman, Mutaz M.. Barnawi, Kenon A. Brown

Media Studies - All Scholarship

This study examines how the men’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, marked by allegations of labor abuses, influenced U.S. viewers’ perceptions of the host nation through the lens of “sportswashing.” Utilizing a survey of self-identified U.S. viewers of the World Cup, the analysis examines how viewers’ personal involvement and recognition of human rights concerns influenced their perceptions of the crisis’s severity. Findings show that recognition of the problem, by viewers themselves, significantly increased perceptions of severity, while involvement with the issue of human rights did not have a direct effect on severity perceptions. Higher perceptions of severity, in turn, …

The Kaleidoscope At Work: Examining Women’S Employee Engagement Through The Kaleidoscope Career Model, Alyssa Hope Lopez May 2026

The Kaleidoscope At Work: Examining Women’S Employee Engagement Through The Kaleidoscope Career Model, Alyssa Hope Lopez

Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations

Employee engagement among women has historically been subsumed within general employee engagement research. Additionally, employee engagement is often conceptualized as independent from one’s career stage. The present study explored these assumptions by examining employee engagement among women and how organizational factors may differentially promote engagement across career stages. The Kaleidoscope Career Model served as the theoretical foundation, proposing that authenticity, balance, and challenge are particularly salient for women in early-, mid-, and late-career stages, respectively. The current study evaluated how career stage moderated the relationship between these three factors and employee engagement. A sample of women (N = 360) …

Motherhood Within The Patriarchal Family: Reconstructing Feminism Through "Frankenstein", Yasamin Osqueezadeh May 2026

Motherhood Within The Patriarchal Family: Reconstructing Feminism Through "Frankenstein", Yasamin Osqueezadeh

Curiosity

In 1792, pioneering English feminist Mary Wollstonecraft published “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman,” arguing that women’s rights could only advance if women moved into the male-dominated public sphere, leaving behind household-centered education, traditional marriage structures, and the nuclear family dynamic. In 1818, Wollstonecraft’s daughter Mary Shelley published “Frankenstein,” in which she explored and critiqued women’s permanent and unacknowledged status as caretakers within their households. Whereas Wollstonecraft aimed to dismantle marriage completely, Shelley simultaneously argued to preserve the notion of family and marriage while also reconstructing the gender roles within those dynamics. Through the lack of female representation from …

Effects Of Uv Exposure On Fecundity, Survival, And Performance Of A Stored Grain Pest, Callosobruchus Maculatus, Colby Christensen, Fielding Mumford, Spencer Brinton, Anna Goates, Md Mirajul Islam

Curiosity

Seed beetles (Callosobruchus maculatus) are a pest of stored leguminous grains that can dramatically decrease yields. Management strategies to control infestations of C. maculatus are important for economic and food security. Radiation exposure is one possible management strategy that has shown promise. In two separate course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), we tested how exposure to UV-C light affects C. maculatus fecundity, survival, and performance. Callosobruchus maculatus individuals were exposed to UV-C at two different life-stages: parent and egg exposure during oviposition and larval exposure during development. Whereas UV exposed two-week old eggs experienced slightly increased mortality, no significant …

Hybrid Ai-Quantum Computational Framework For Efficient Eddy Current Repulsion Force Simulation, Z Zhang, Y Ryu, Wh Li, Jiayin Y Wang

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Eddy current repulsion forces are essential to the operation of magnetic levitation, electromagnetic braking, and wireless power transfer systems, yet their accurate simulation remains computationally intensive due to the complexity of Maxwell's equations and the need for fine-resolution meshing in transient, high-frequency domains. This paper presents a hybrid AI-Quantum computational framework that accelerates eddy current simulation by combining adaptive meshing via Physics-Informed Neural Networks for adaptive meshing, quantum-assisted solvers (Harrow Hassidim-Lloyd algorithm and Variational Quantum Eigensolver) for selected finite element subdomains, and GPU-accelerated finite element methods, and reduced-order modeling based on Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and Quantum Autoencoders. The framework selectively …

Context-Aware Vulnerability Scoring For Dubai Immigration Systems: Enhancing Cvss With Exposure And Asset Risk Factors, Saeed Adnan Saeed Alkhatibi Alsuwaidi May 2026

Context-Aware Vulnerability Scoring For Dubai Immigration Systems: Enhancing Cvss With Exposure And Asset Risk Factors, Saeed Adnan Saeed Alkhatibi Alsuwaidi

Theses

This paper explores the drawbacks of Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) usage in case of mission critical government infrastructures with special attention to Dubai Immigration systems. Even though the widely used tool against evaluating the severity of technical vulnerability is the CVSS, it fails to consider the organisational factors like the exposure of the asset, the criticality of the system, the number of users and the sensitivity of data. Such contextual blindness may contribute to prioritisation being off-kilter and ineffective resource assignment in high-risk and highly sensitive settings. The researchers systematically analyse the potential to incorporate contextual features in CVSS …

Growth And Development Of Two Echinochloa Millet Species In A Warm Temperate Climate, D K. Muldoon

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Most summer forage crops fall into either the sorghum or the millet species group. Included in the millet group are two species, Echinochloa utilis and Echinochloa frumentacea, commonly known as Japanese barnyard millet and Indian barnyard millet, respectively. These species have a negligible HCN potential and higher nutritive value than Sorghum species. However, they generally flower early, yield less than forage sorghum , and lack vigor in regrowth. In this study the pattern of growth and development of two Echinochloa millets was examined as part of a larger program of improving the production of these forage species. E. utilis …
