“Alexa, Do Not Say That In Front Of My Boss!” A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of User And Ai Preferences For Privacy-Aware Smart Speaker Interactions Across Contexts, Lynne Warin, Emily Aurelia, Anthony Tang, Emily Aurelia, Delphine Reinhardt

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to their limited ability to reason about the social context in which they are used, smart speakers pose significant privacy risks by responding in ways that may violate people's implicit social boundaries. We conducted a cross-cultural vignette study (N = 944) in Germany and Singapore to investigate how situational factors—specifically social context (bystander relationships and closeness), physical context (location), and interaction context (topic and deceptive intent)—regulate user preferences for smart speaker responses. Our results demonstrate that these factors are superior predictors of response preferences than dispositional user traits (i.e., intrinsic personal traits). We identify two distinct social dynamics: a …

Cfalr: Collaborative Filtering-Augmented Large Language Model For Personalized Fashion Outfit Recommendation, Yujuan Ding, Junrong Liao, Yunshan Ma, Yi Bin, Wenqi Fan, Tat-Seng Chua, Qing Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Personalized outfit recommendation poses a significant challenge in e-commerce and social media platforms, requiring systems that balance user preferences with aesthetic compatibility. Collaborative filtering (CF) provides a traditional solution for this, but it struggles with data-sparse scenarios and complex user-item-outfit relationships. Meanwhile, existing template-based approaches are constrained by rigid pre-designed structures. To bridge these research gaps, we introduce CFALR (Collaborative Filtering-Augmented Large Language Model for Recommendation), a novel framework that synergizes collaborative filtering with large language models for personalized outfit recommendation. Specifically, CFALR describes user-outfit interactions in natural language and leverages LLMs to capture fashion semantics while employing CF-enhanced embeddings …

How Do Machine Learning Models Change?, Joel Castaño, Rafael Cabañas, Antonio Salmerón, David Lo, Silverio Martínez-Fernández

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The proliferation of Machine Learning (ML) models and their open source implementations has transformed AI research and applications. Platforms like Hugging Face (HF) enable this evolving ecosystem, yet a large-scale longitudinal study of how these models change is lacking. This study addresses this gap by analyzing over 680,000 commits from 100,000 models and 2,251 releases from 202 of these models on HF using repository mining and longitudinal methods. We apply an extended ML change taxonomy to classify commits and use Bayesian networks to model temporal patterns in commit and release activities. Our findings show that commit activities align with established …

From Institutions To Families: Assessing The Progress Of Egypt’S National Strategy For Alternative Child Care Reform, Yasmine M. El Hagry

Theses and Dissertations

This study serves as a critical mid-term review of the Egyptian National Strategy for Alternative Care for Children and Youth without Parental Care (NACS) (2021-2030). The 10-year strategy overall goal is to shift from institutional care, such as orphanages, to family-based care, such as kafala, the Islamic alternative to legal adoption, for children deprived of parental care. While the global literature strongly advocates deinstitutionalization, empirical research on the operational risks and unintended harms that can arise during such complex transformations remains scarce.

Adapting the International Civil Service Effectiveness (InCiSE) Framework, this research uses a qualitative approach to diagnose the …

Update: Colorado River Basin Storage Continues Slide Toward System Crash, Anne Castle, Jack Schmidt, Eric Kuhn, Kathryn Sorensen, Katherine Tara Jun 2026

Update: Colorado River Basin Storage Continues Slide Toward System Crash, Anne Castle, Jack Schmidt, Eric Kuhn, Kathryn Sorensen, Katherine Tara

The Traveling Wilburys of the Colorado River

If the Colorado River Basin (Basin) experiences another dry year, similar to Water Year 2025, it is likely that reasonably accessible storage in Lake Powell and Lake Mead would be mostly depleted, even if consumptive uses and losses are at or near historic lows. Run-of-the-river operations would shortly ensue. This would be an outcome with devastating consequences. In contrast, if next year is very wet, similar to Water Year 2023, the Basin’s largest federal reservoirs would recover somewhat, but would provide only about two years of cushion before we find ourselves again in the same position we are in today, …

The Impact Of Religious Behaviors, Islamophobia, Gender Roles, Language Proficiency, And Education Levels On Mental Illness Stigma And Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Arab Women In The U.S., Rima Muhsen

Dissertations

The official U.S. census does not provide data on the number of Arab Americans in the United States, which hinders studies that focus on this population group to explore their needs and improve access to mental health services. Arab women in America represent a subgroup that has received insufficient attention from researchers, particularly regarding culturally sensitive topics such as mental health problems and their associated stigma. The influence of cultural, social, and religious factors on self-stigma associated with mental illness has not been adequately studied among this marginalized group. While previous research has suggested a relationship between self-stigma, social stigma …

Well-Being, Resilience, And Trauma During Migration: A Mixed Methods Study Of Venezuelan Migrants In Transit, Margaret S. Port

Dissertations

A substantial body of research has examined the psychological impact of experiences preceding and following migration, yet comparatively little attention has been given to the psychological toll of the migration journey itself. Moreover, due to the relative novelty of the Venezuelan migrant crisis and the community’s arrival in the United States, the psychological impact of Venezuelan migrants’ unique migration experience has been underexamined. This study utilized an explanatory sequential mixed methods design to investigate the relationships between well-being, resilience, and trauma among Venezuelan migrants in Chicago, Illinois, while also exploring their lived experiences of the migration journey. Study participants (n …

The Motherhood Contract: Mental Load, Moral Risk, And Gendered Care In Contemporary Parenting And Digital Culture, Stephanie J. Stallman

Dissertations

This dissertation examines childcare as a site of gender inequality shaped by cultural norms, structural barriers, and digital discourse. Despite increased awareness of shared parenting ideals, mothers predominantly bear the “mental load.” This study introduces the idea of a motherhood contract: implicit expectations that mothers are responsible for managing children’s needs. Two research questions guide this study. (1) What are parents’ experiences of managing the mental load of caregiving? How do they make sense of these experiences within the gendered and moral expectations shaping family life? (2) How are cultural ideas about childcare and parenting constructed, circulated, and reproduced through …

Diverse Families Navigating Mental Health At The Pediatrician’S Office: A Mixed Methods Exploration Of The Interplay Of Stress, Culture, And Child Mental Health In The Primary Care Setting, Sara B. Budowsky

Dissertations

Low-income and ethnic minority youth experience high psychiatric need but persistently low participation in traditional mental health care. General pediatricians are often the first and only healthcare providers with whom many families engage around their child’s emotional and behavioral development. Using both quantitative analysis of retrospective secondary data and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of in-depth interviews with diverse caregivers, this project explored influencers of child mental health and family utilization of pediatric primary-care-based mental health services in the context of a uniquely multicultural clinic serving a predominantly Medicaid population. Three key findings include: 1) Caregiver Stress was a highly significant, …

Exercise Therapy For Mood Disorders In Retiring/Former Athletes, Christian Antos Jun 2026

Exercise Therapy For Mood Disorders In Retiring/Former Athletes, Christian Antos

Dissertations

This dissertation examined the potential integration of exercise therapy and psychotherapy as a treatment approach for mood-related difficulties experienced by former elite athletes during the transition out of competitive sport. Retirement from athletics is often associated with significant biopsychosocial challenges, including disruptions in identity, healthy routines, social support, and emotional well-being. Existing literature suggests that exercise may serve as an effective adjunctive intervention for improving mood and overall psychological functioning, though limited research has explored its application among retiring athletes within psychotherapeutic contexts. This literature review synthesized current research related to athletic retirement, neurobiological mechanisms associated with physical activity, and …

Dissertations

This study examined the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in leadership effectiveness within early childhood education settings. Leadership in these contexts involves navigating complex relationships, staff stress, and organizational demands, yet leadership preparation often emphasizes technical skills over emotional competencies. The study explored how EI influences leadership effectiveness and how reflective practices support leadership development. Guided by the question How does emotional intelligence impact leadership effectiveness?, the study used a mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were collected through an EI Inventory of Practices self-assessment measuring four EI domains, and qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest emotionally intelligent …

Fractional Bernstein Polynomial Approximations For Nonlinear Timefractional Partial Differential Equations, Reem Abdul Quzli Jun 2026

Fractional Bernstein Polynomial Approximations For Nonlinear Timefractional Partial Differential Equations, Reem Abdul Quzli

Theses

This thesis studies the numerical approximation of nonlinear time-fractional partial differential equations using fractional Bernstein polynomials. The main model considered is the nonlinear time-fractional foam drainage equation, in which the classical time derivative is replaced by the Caputo fractional derivative. This formulation introduces memory effects into the model and allows the present drainage behavior to depend on the previous evolution of the liquid fraction.

The proposed method approximates the solution by a finite expansion of fractional Bernstein basis functions. After substituting this approximation into the governing equation, the residual is expanded in powers of t . The unknown coefficient …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Fire in forested catchments significantly alters organic matter fluxes by generating dissolved organic matter (DOM) different from that generated under non-fire conditions. Elucidating the composition of DOM is key to understanding its persistence in the post-fire environment. This laboratory study aimed to establish a relationship between DOM quantity and quality with aspects of fire regime. Soil and litter samples were collected from areas with different burn histories (described as Time Since Last Fire – TSLF). Each sample was subjected to burn temperature treatments simulating different burn severity regimes in a muffle furnace (at 250°C – low severity, 350°C – moderate …

The Vanishing Economics Of Trade Secret Value, Gregory M. Dickinson Jun 2026

The Vanishing Economics Of Trade Secret Value, Gregory M. Dickinson

Missouri Law Review

Trade secret law is built around a simple economic fact. Information can yield supracompetitive returns only when prospective competitors are prevented from using it, such as when it is kept secret from them. A successful trade secret plaintiff must therefore show that the alleged trade secret derives “independent economic value” from not being generally known to others. Yet modern doctrine sometimes treats this value requirement as something else—an inquiry into whether information is “valuable” in the abstract and whether it is independently useful versus dependent on some other information. Part of the reason is simply that proof of trade secret …

Trade Secret Law’S Readily-Ascertainable Bar: Then And Now, Camilla A. Hrdy Jun 2026

Trade Secret Law’S Readily-Ascertainable Bar: Then And Now, Camilla A. Hrdy

Missouri Law Review

Information that is “readily ascertainable by proper means” cannot qualify as a trade secret. This requirement—what this Article calls the “readily-ascertainable bar”—is codified in the Uniform Trade Secrets Act (“UTSA”) and the federal Defend Trade Secrets Act (“DTSA”). Yet it is poorly understood and frequently misapplied. Drawing on historical case law and archival drafting materials from the UTSA, this Article shows that this bar was adopted to overrule a line of common law cases in which the courts had protected information revealed in publicly marketed products or expired patents. The UTSA’s drafters rejected this approach, instead seeking to deny trade …

Not So Freakish After All: Foreseeability And The Limits Of Statutory Compliance, Logan A. Blaylock

Missouri Law Review

When substitute school bus driver Tomika Richardson began her route one October afternoon, the only map she had was a scribbled list of intersections—a rough substitute for the detailed, software-generated route plan with turn-by-turn directions that First Student, Inc. (“First Student”) normally provided to its drivers. The handwritten sheet, reproduced below, was the sole document Richardson received to guide her through a complex urban bus run:

The Disability Discrimination Dilemma: Resolving The Circuit Split Regarding Culpability Standards In Education, Brooklyn N. Cross Jun 2026

The Disability Discrimination Dilemma: Resolving The Circuit Split Regarding Culpability Standards In Education, Brooklyn N. Cross

Missouri Law Review

“Our anger was a fury sparked by profound injustices. Wrongs that deserved ire. And with that rage we ripped a hole in the status quo.” In 1949, eighteen-month-old Judith Heumann contracted polio, losing her ability to walk. Heumann’s parents, German Jewish immigrants to New York, were unaware of the consequences using a wheelchair would have on their daughter’s ability to participate in certain activities. When it became time for Heumann to begin kindergarten, the principal refused to allow the family into the school, stating that Heumann was a “fire hazard.” But Heumann’s mother was tenacious, and the principal eventually admitted …

Mythbusting The Moment Of Threat: Barnes V. Felix In The Context Of Unreasonable Police Seizures, Coleson Manade

Missouri Law Review

A traffic stop for unpaid toll violations should not end in death. Yet on April 28, 2016, Officer Roberto Felix shot and killed Ashtian Barnes during a routine traffic stop for a non-arrestable offense. The legal battle that followed exposed a fundamental tension in Fourth Amendment jurisprudence: how should courts balance officers’ safety concerns with citizens’ rights when analyzing excessive force claims?

Research examining men's public opinion on women's and men's roles in abortion is limited but increasingly important as access to abortion has shifted dramatically in the U.S. In this study, we examined U.S. men's views of women's and men's agency in abortion decision-making. We explored 72 in-depth interviews on abortion attitudes conducted with men in 2021 and identified three main narratives. First, most men indicated that abortion is exclusively a women's decision. Several men noted wanting men's opinions to at least be heard in the decision-making process, while still maintaining that women should be the decision-makers. We identified subtle nuances, …

Anterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome From Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Injection, Neha Singh, Elisa Chaparro, Jordan Michael Shapiro, Emanuel Narcis Husu

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES) is an underdiagnosed cause of abdominal pain. We report the first documented ACNES case following subcutaneous administration of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. A 44-year-old man developed focal, neuropathic abdominal pain coinciding with initiation of tirzepatide injections. Clinical examination confirmed ACNES diagnosis, and pain improved after relocating injections away from the abdomen and initiating multimodal pharmacotherapy. This case emphasizes the need to consider ACNES in patients endorsing focal abdominal pain with concurrent use of glucagon-like peptide-1 therapy and highlights injection site modification as a simple, effective management strategy while exercising self-restraint with respect to workup.
