School Renewal And School Well-Being, Jianping Shen, John Lane, Patricia Reeves, Siche Feng, Xin Ma Jun 2026

School Renewal And School Well-Being, Jianping Shen, John Lane, Patricia Reeves, Siche Feng, Xin Ma

Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology Faculty Publications

In this longitudinal case study, we examined school well-being during the change process. We operationalized the change process as the school renewal model and viewed school well-being from the perspective of the PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) model. We found that all elements of the PERMA model were manifested in the school renewal process and that the school renewal process was not dominated solely by conflict and tension, as the literature typically suggests about the change process. The findings of the study suggest the possibility of reframing tension as productive rather than detrimental in the school renewal …

Trace: Temporal Rhetorical Analysis And Consistency Evaluation For Legislative Speech, David Hernandez Jun 2026

Trace: Temporal Rhetorical Analysis And Consistency Evaluation For Legislative Speech, David Hernandez

Master's Theses

Legislators frequently discuss the same policy issues across multiple hearings and legislative sessions, sometimes maintaining consistent positions and other times modifying or reframing their stance over time. Understanding how these positions evolve is important for analyzing political discourse and democratic accountability, yet identifying such shifts at scale remains difficult.

We introduce TRACE (Temporal Rhetorical Analysis and Consistency Evaluation), a system built on the Digital Democracy Database (DDDB) for detecting rhetorical inconsistency in California legislative hearing testimony. TRACE organizes utterances into speaker-anchored timelines indexed by bill and session, then applies hybrid semantic retrieval — combining dense BGE embeddings with BM25 lexical …

Ultra Fast Calorimeter Simulation With Generative Machine Learning On Fpgas, P. Alex May, Qibin Liu, Julia Gonski, Benjamin Nachman

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Computationally expensive, high-accuracy detector simulations are a major bottleneck for many particle physics experiments such as those at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as well as those planned for future colliders. This challenge has motivated the development of fast generative machine learning based surrogates. We present a hardware-aware variational autoencoder model for fast calorimeter simulation that is designed specifically for field programmable gate array (FPGA) deployment, offering faster and lower power inference capability. Quantization aware training and other compression techniques are applied to respect the resource constraints of a single FPGA. The synthesized implementation of the VAE decoder achieves sub-millisecond …

Gis-Based Solar Energy Suitability Assessment For Utility-Scale Photovoltaic Development In Texas, Deepak Kumar Jun 2026

Gis-Based Solar Energy Suitability Assessment For Utility-Scale Photovoltaic Development In Texas, Deepak Kumar

Masters Theses

This research developed a GIS-based multi-criteria suitability model to identify sites in Texas favorable for utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) development. The model integrated three biophysical variables—Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), terrain slope, and land cover—within a weighted overlay framework using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for criteria weighting. GHI data were derived from the ERA5-Land Daily Aggregated dataset (ECMWF, 2024), slope was calculated from the USGS 3DEP 10-meter Digital Elevation Model, and land cover was classified from the National Land Cover Database 2021 (USGS). Each variable was reclassified to a 0–4 suitability scale and combined using AHP-derived weights of 0.50 (GHI), …

Real Time Grid Connected Der Inverter Control Fault Ride Through Model In Accordance With Ieee 1547–2018 Standard, Mark Joseph Booge Jun 2026

Real Time Grid Connected Der Inverter Control Fault Ride Through Model In Accordance With Ieee 1547–2018 Standard, Mark Joseph Booge

Masters Theses

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) include inverter-based power generation units, which are increasing in demand due to the rising consumption of energy, need for improved grid stability, and other environmental factors. DERs can either supply or supplement the grid using different control strategies depending on the grid’s needs. IEEE standard 1547-2018 dictates the interconnection and operation requirements of grid-connected DERs under nominal and abnormal voltage conditions. Although inverter ride-through operation has been widely studied, the effects of the standard’s time-based requirements within a distribution grid system require further investigation.

This study investigates how the IEEE 1547-2018 time-based ride-through requirements affect a …

Understanding The Effect Of Scaling On Aerodynamic Force Analysis Of The Nrel Phase Vi Wind Turbine, Patrick R. West Jun 2026

Understanding The Effect Of Scaling On Aerodynamic Force Analysis Of The Nrel Phase Vi Wind Turbine, Patrick R. West

Masters Theses

It is challenging for small models and prototypes to accurately reflect the aerodynamic performance of a full-scale wind turbine, especially for offshore turbines. It is also not economical to build full-scale models for prototype testing. Scaling makes it possible to modify the dimensions for computational simulations, simplify the prototype construction and testing process, and make aerodynamic load analysis applicable to larger blade diameters. In this work, a model is presented that considers the effects of geometric scaling by modifying the incoming windspeeds and rotational speed of the turbine rotor in capturing aerodynamic load through Computational Fluid Dynamics. The National Renewable …

This work presents a computational and experimental investigation into the thermal management of power electronic modules for an electric vehicle (EV) integrated charger-inverter (ICI) system, with a focus on the Inverter module, Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converter with a High- Frequency Transformer (HFT) with an external leakage inductor. Analytical loss models are used to calculate conduction and switching losses for the DAB and inverter SiC MOSFET modules, and the Improved Generalised Steinmetz Equation is applied to determine HFT core and winding losses. The adequacy of passive natural convection as a thermal management strategy is first assessed, and its limitations at …

High-Density Power Conversion: Analyzing High-Frequency Transformer Scaling Laws And Grid-Filter Efficacy In Integrated Charger Inverters, Thilina Lakshan Dissanayakage Jun 2026

High-Density Power Conversion: Analyzing High-Frequency Transformer Scaling Laws And Grid-Filter Efficacy In Integrated Charger Inverters, Thilina Lakshan Dissanayakage

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates frequency scaling in high-frequency transformer (HFT) used in Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters and evaluates different LCL filter design methodologies for grid-connected applications. The study explores the impact of operating frequency on transformer size reduction, efficiency, and overall performance by analyzing HFT designs at 50 kHz, 100 kHz, and 400 kHz. It is expected that increasing the switching frequency enables significant reduction in transformer volume, while introducing trade-offs in efficiency due to increased core and copper losses. In parallel, the thesis examines and compares three LCL filter design approaches under identical operating conditions using a 1 kW …

Hyper-Bishops, Hyper-Rooks, And Hyper-Queens: Percentage Of Safe Squares On Higher Dimensional Chess Boards, Caroline Cashman, Joseph Cooper, Raul Marquez, Steven J. Miller, Jenna Shuffelton Jun 2026

Hyper-Bishops, Hyper-Rooks, And Hyper-Queens: Percentage Of Safe Squares On Higher Dimensional Chess Boards, Caroline Cashman, Joseph Cooper, Raul Marquez, Steven J. Miller, Jenna Shuffelton

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Chess has inspired an abundance of mathematical problems, especially in combinatorics and probability. One such problem, initially studied by Miller, Sheng, and Turek, considers the proportion of safe spaces when randomly placing n rooks on an 𝑛×𝑛 chess board. They show that as n approaches infinity, the proportion of safe spaces converges to 1/𝑒2. We first generalize their results to bishops and queens. This problem is significantly more interesting and difficult; while a rook attacks the same number of spaces regardless of its position, this is not so for bishops and queens. We prove that the proportion of safe spaces …

Culturally Informed Responses To Grief And Loss In A Fractured World: Implications For School Social Work In African Contexts, Leticia Villarreal Sosa, Rachel Phelps Jun 2026

Culturally Informed Responses To Grief And Loss In A Fractured World: Implications For School Social Work In African Contexts, Leticia Villarreal Sosa, Rachel Phelps

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

School Social Workers (SSWs) are in a unique position to respond to systemic forms of grief and loss. Most interventions rarely consider the larger social context or how racialized experiences impact both the types of grief and loss learners experience, as well as how schools respond to their grief. The Culturally Informed Response to Grief and Loss Certificate (CIRGL) aims to fill this gap by providing an online, asynchronous professional development program that centres the lived experiences of minoritized youth and asks professionals to critically examine their own biases. This paper shares the results of the evaluation of the Train …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background and importance: Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary spasms of the facial muscles that can lead to debilitating symptoms and is typically caused by vascular compression. Classically, microvascular decompression of the offending vessel is the gold standard; however, in certain cases, microvascular decompression may have increased risk because of patient comorbidities and underlying anatomy. In this report, we describe a unique endovascular approach with flow diversion for the treatment of HFS.

Clinical presentation: A 70-year-old woman presented to the clinic with a 5-year history of HFS on the right side progressing from the eye to …

Overcoming Adversity With Resilience: A Phenomenological Examination Of African American Women Leaders Facing Microaggressions In Corporate Spaces, Dionne Trenise Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

African American women leaders in Fortune 500 companies experience persistent challenges of subtle yet pervasive systems of discrimination in the form of microaggressions that cause negative impacts to their psychological well-being, workplace performance, and career advancement. These women exhibit incredible resilience that enable them to thrive at work, mitigate mental health challenges, and navigate their careers successfully. However, unlike people who fall into either a racial minority group or a gender minority group, African American women experience compounded effects of microaggressions due to the intersection of their race and gender. As a result of microaggressions, these women experience impacts to …

Deficient Executive Control In Transformer Attention, Suketu Chandrakant Patel, Hongbin Wang, Jin Fan Jun 2026

Deficient Executive Control In Transformer Attention, Suketu Chandrakant Patel, Hongbin Wang, Jin Fan

Publications and Research

Although transformers in large language models (LLMs) effectively implement a self-attention mechanism that has revolutionized natural language processing, they lack an explicit architecture for the executive control of attention found in humans, which is essential for resolving conflicts and selecting relevant information in the presence of competing computations and is critical for adaptive behavior. To investigate the impact of this limitation in LLMs, we employed the classic color Stroop task, widely regarded as the gold standard, to test the executive control of attention in these models. Our results revealed a typical conflict effect of underperformance in terms of accuracy in …

Spatiospectral Lobes And Radiation Modeling Of Partially Coherent Supersonic Jet Noise, Tyce Wayne Olaveson Jun 2026

Spatiospectral Lobes And Radiation Modeling Of Partially Coherent Supersonic Jet Noise, Tyce Wayne Olaveson

Theses and Dissertations

Noise fields generated by high-performance military jets are known to contain acoustic structures that differ from their simulated and lab-scale counterparts. These differences may limit current noise control efforts, which are designed and tested at scale before being considered for full-scale aircraft. One such noise structure is the presence of spatiospectral lobes, which appear as multiple spectral peaks at single microphone locations and multiple radiation lobes in field reconstructions. This dissertation uses data collected from the T-7A jet noise measurement to characterize the spatial behavior of the spatiospectral lobes as well as their first time-domain description. A multiple wavepacket decomposition …

Daily Rainfall Forecasting Over West Bengal With Spatio-Temporal Graph Networks, Risheek Ghosh Jun 2026

Daily Rainfall Forecasting Over West Bengal With Spatio-Temporal Graph Networks, Risheek Ghosh

Master’s Dissertations

Daily rainfall is hard to forecast where most days are dry, a few days are very wet, and almost all of the rain arrives in one season. This dissertation studies day-ahead rainfall forecasting over West Bengal, India, using models that learn from both the temporal and the spatial layout of measuring stations. We first build up a forecasting model in stages, from simple models that look at one station’s past to a graph-based model that links nearby stations, and we identify the strongest deterministic forecaster among them. We then ask whether the choice of input data changes the story, by …

Enhancing Postsecondary Outcomes For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders: A Design-Based Mixed Methods Approach To Transition Planning, Kate M. Schrum Jun 2026

Enhancing Postsecondary Outcomes For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders: A Design-Based Mixed Methods Approach To Transition Planning, Kate M. Schrum

Dissertations

Students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) experienced significantly lower postsecondary outcomes when compared to same-aged peers. These outcomes included lower graduation rates, higher unemployment rates, and difficulty establishing independent living arrangements (Wagner & Newman, 2015). Following a human-centered, design-based approach, the scholar-practitioner found a lack of consistent and meaningful transition support specifically designed for students with EBD. Working with a stakeholder team of educational professionals directly involved in supporting transition for students with EBD at an alternative special education program, the scholar-practitioner developed a "Transition Toolkit". The toolkit contained scaffolded grade-level checklists (for grades 6–12) with self-advocacy and goal-setting …

Can Generative Ai Make Farming Decisions? Current Status And Future Pathways: A Case Study In Row Crop Production With Chatgpt, Nipuna Chamara, Yufeng Ge, Joe Luck, Yu Pan, Saleh Taghvaeian, Cory Walters, Christopher Proctor, Daran Rudnick, Daren Redfearn

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The agricultural decision-making process is experience-based, knowledge-dependent, time-sensitive, complex, and driven by historical data. Planting, fertilization, irrigation, and chemigation are key categories in farm decision-making, and currently there is no one-shot decision-support tool that covers all these activities. Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) models are more advanced than traditional machine learning and deep learning models. These models have been trained on vast amounts of data from the internet, allowing them to accept unstructured data in various forms and generate human-like text, solutions to problems, and scenario predictions. Given this capability, we became interested in exploring the potential of generative AI in …
