Synthesis And Characterization Of Heavy-Metal Oxoanion- And Phosphonate-Binding Nanojars, Pooja Singh Apr 2024

Synthesis And Characterization Of Heavy-Metal Oxoanion- And Phosphonate-Binding Nanojars, Pooja Singh

Dissertations

Nanojars are an emerging class of anion-binding and extraction agents. These supramolecular coordination complexes (2 nm wide) exhibit exceptional anion binding strength that points to their possible application in the recovery of toxic or valuable anions from water bodies. Nanojars of the formula (TBA)2[XO3/42−⸦{CuII(μ-OH)(μ-pyrazolate)}n] (TBA = tetrabutylammonium cation; XO3/42− = anion; X = Se, Te, Cr, Mo, W, HP, HAs, HV; n = 26 – 36) are synthesized from Cu2+, OH−, pyrazole and the TBA salts of various anions. Nanojars possess hydrophobic exteriors with an array of pyrazolate ligands and hydrophilic interiors with a …

Identity And Alterity In A Comedy Series From Santa Cruz, Bolivia, During The Presidency Of Evo Morales, Anita L. Zandstra,

Dissertations

This dissertation explores the construction of social identity and social difference in and through Neo/Los Mismos, a Bolivian comedy series produced during the presidency of Evo Morales (2006-2019), the country’s first president to claim an Indigenous identity. These years were characterized by profound divisions between the Bolivian highlands, home to Morales’s base of support, and the opposition based in the lowlands department of Santa Cruz. This qualitative study takes an interdisciplinary approach to social identity and social difference during the Morales era, drawing on concepts from linguistic anthropology, literary criticism, and humor studies, and tracing connections between Neo/Los Mismos and …

Exploring Quaternion Neural Network Loss Surfaces, Jeremiah Bill, Bruce A. Cox Apr 2024

Exploring Quaternion Neural Network Loss Surfaces, Jeremiah Bill, Bruce A. Cox

Faculty Publications

This paper explores the superior performance of quaternion multi-layer perceptron (QMLP) neural networks over real-valued multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural networks, a phenomenon that has been empirically observed but not thoroughly investigated. The study utilizes loss surface visualization and projection techniques to examine quaternion-based optimization loss surfaces for the first time. The primary contribution of this research is the statistical evidence that QMLP models yield smoother loss surfaces than real-valued neural networks, which are measured and compared using a robust quantitative measure of loss surface “goodness” based on estimates of surface curvature. Extensive computational testing validates the effectiveness of these surface …

An Introduction To Nanomaterials For Nanopackaging, James E. Morris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The multiple purposes of an electronics “package” include the provision of mechanical support to the silicon chip, for example, and protection from the environment, the delivery of power in and the facilitation of heat out, and the reliable input and output of information signals, whether electrical or optical. In the age of heterogeneous integration, this includes the internal conversion of signal modes between multiple technologies within the package, while maintaining the traditional requirement of reliable information transmission between packages, e.g., on a traditional circuit board. This article presents some selected examples of nanopackaging, i.e., the application of nanotechnologies, (nanoparticles, carbon …

Rebuilding Banking Law: Banks As Public Utilities, Lev Menand, Morgan Ricks Apr 2024

Rebuilding Banking Law: Banks As Public Utilities, Lev Menand, Morgan Ricks

Faculty Scholarship

Under the New Deal framework for money and payments — which had its roots in the National Bank Act of 1864 — banks in the United States were governed in many respects as public utilities. Charters were available only where they were consistent with public convenience and need, the usual standard for utilities. Banks enjoyed an exclusive privilege to augment the money supply, maintaining deposit account balances that house-holds and businesses could use as a means of payment and store of value. Banks were largely limited to conducting activities consistent with their monetary purpose. Geographic expansion was constrained to promote …

How Bodily Autonomy Can Fail Against Vaccination Mandates; The Few Vs. The Many, Jason Yadhram Apr 2024

How Bodily Autonomy Can Fail Against Vaccination Mandates; The Few Vs. The Many, Jason Yadhram

Journal of Law and Health

Humans have been a communal species since inception and continue to be so to this day. Because of this, if even a small scale of a measured population becomes severely ill, the entire remaining population and surrounding area is thrown into absolute chaos. In fact, we have seen these circumstances throughout history and in the recent COVID-19 pandemic yet, some of us have forgotten that the only way this chaos can be curbed, is by enacting a mandatory vaccination policy. Since COVID-19 however, vaccination mandates have become an uneasy topic of conversation in the United States for essentially one main …

Distorted Burden Shifting & Barred Mitigation: Being A Stubborn 234 Years Old Ironically Hasn’T Helped The Supreme Court Mature, Noah Seabrook

Journal of Law and Health

This Note explores the intricate relationship between emerging adulthood, defined as the transitional phase between youth and adulthood (ages 18-25), and the legal implications of capital punishment. Contrary to a fixed age determining adulthood, research highlights the prolonged nature of the maturation process, especially for individuals impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The Note challenges the current legal framework that deems individuals aged 18 to 25 who experienced ACEs as eligible for capital punishment, highlighting the cognitive impact of ACEs on developmental trajectories. Examining cases like Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Billy Joe Wardlow, this Note argues that courts often bypass mitigating …

Contract Customization, Sex, And Islamic Law, Rabea Benhalim Apr 2024

Contract Customization, Sex, And Islamic Law, Rabea Benhalim

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Common law has historically deemed marriage and sex outside the right to contract. Yet, couples increasingly use contracts to provide legal rights to the unmarried in a variety of contexts ranging from same-sex relationships to surrogacy. Islamic law, on the other hand, has always conceived of marriage and sexual relationships as exclusively under the realm of contract law governed by private actors. This Article brings Islamic law into the larger conversation on the use of contracts for sexual and relationship agreements. It further proposes that Islamic law has something to offer Muslims and non-Muslims alike by empowering individuals to use …

Platform Unions, Charlotte Garden

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

How should we regulate social media platforms to prevent harmful treatment of users? Regulators, advocates, and scholars have grappled with this problem for years. Many proposed solutions, ranging from improving privacy disclosures, to promoting competition between platforms, to requiring platforms to pay users for their data, are at best incomplete. This Article begins from the premise that platform problems are collective problems and proposes a collective solution: empowering users to organize platform unions. Much like labor unions give employees a say in in their working conditions even when they lack individual bargaining power, platform unions would facilitate collective bargaining over …

Two Is Not Always Better Than One: Concurrent Jurisdiction In Indian Country And The Withering Of Tribal Sovereignty Following Mcgirt And Castro-Huerta, Marina Berardino

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

There is a violence epidemic plaguing the Native American population across the country. Native women are disproportionality victimized by both sexual and non-sexual violence--over eighty-five percent of Native women are expected to be victims of intimate partner violence, stalking, or sexual violence at some point in their life. Most often, the perpetrators are non-Native, which creates jurisdictional issues. In most states, the only sovereign with the authority to prosecute non-Indian-on-Indian crimes is the federal government. Yet, federal law enforcement often does not investigate these crimes, and federal prosecutors ultimately decline to prosecute many sexual assault and domestic violence crimes in …

Retention In Research Administration, Kelly Alongi

Ed.D. Capstone Reports

The current study was conducted to gain insight into what factors are most important to research administrators when they are deciding whether to remain at or leave their current organization. Research administration, like many other professions, experiences a high rate of turnover. This is problematic because the time to train research administrators can be very lengthy and expensive. This exploratory study utilized a quantitative survey to find the most highly rated factors by research administrators when deciding whether to stay at or leave their position.

The ''Lights Out!" Game On Threshold Graphs, Troy E. Conlay, Darren B. Parker Apr 2024

The ''Lights Out!" Game On Threshold Graphs, Troy E. Conlay, Darren B. Parker

McNair Scholars Manuscripts

The 'Lights Out' game was originally played on a 5x5 grid of buttons that started as either on or off. Pressing the buttons flips the state of the button pressed and the directly adjacent buttons, the goal being to have all of the lights out. We can play 'Lights Out' on a graph if we assign 0 or 1 to each of the vertices on the graph, analogous to on and off in the original game, and switch the labels of a vertex and its neighbors from 0 to 1 and vice versa when the vertex is toggled. This paper …

A Novel Interaction Of Nesidiocoris Tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae) As A Biological Control Agent Of Bactericera Cockerelli (Hemiptera: Triozidae) In Potato, Gabriela Esparza-Diaz, Raul Villanueva, Ismael E. Badillo-Vargas

Entomology Faculty Publications

Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a generalist predator commonly used to control the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in Europe. This mirid has been found and established in South Texas, where it was initially observed feeding on nymphs of the psyllid Bactericera cockerelli (Hemiptera: Triozidae) in open tomato fields. B. cockerelli is the vector of the fastidious bacterium “Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum” that causes diseases in several solanaceous crops, including zebra chip (ZC) disease in potatoes. There is a need to better understand how this predator impacts the control of important crop pests, such as potato psyllids. We assessed the interactions between N. …

Imaging In The Fitness Industry: A Connection To Body Dysmorphic Disorder In Women, Joseliz Andujar Pimentel

Posters - 2024

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric illness characterized by distress and excessive preoccupation with perceived defects in physical appearance that are not at all, or only slightly, observable to others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). BDD can be found in many individuals; among these individuals are women in the fitness industry. This is due to the idea that there is an “ideal” body image portrayed by fitness industries that provoke women to compare themselves. This study examined a variety of fitness websites consisting of fitness apparel websites and fitness websites, where the models used in each website were examined for …

By understanding and addressing the impact of nuclear verdicts, the insurance industry can strive for resilience and sustainable growth amidst a rapidly changing legal and economic environment. Social inflation describes how insurers’ claims costs are increasing above general economic inflation. Nuclear verdicts are a testament to rising costs that insurance companies must manage when running of their business. As the frequency and magnitude of nuclear verdicts continue to rise, the surge in massive settlements has prompted insurers to reassess risk management strategies, leading to increased premiums and a reevaluation of underwriting practices. Insurers are compelled to anticipate and mitigate the …

Based on findings from systematic reviews and metaanalyses, acute exercise (e.g., aerobic or resistance exercise) improves inhibitory control. However, a popular fitness trend, CrossFit®, has not been widely studied regarding its effect on inhibitory control. CrossFit® is a high-intensity functional training (HIFT) program that stresses the cardiorespiratory and muscular systems through complex, multi-joint movement patterns with minimal rests in-between sets. 1Wilke (2020) found that a 15-minute HIFT exercise bout improved working memory. However, the effect of HIFT on inhibitory control remains unclear. The purpose of the current study was to assess inhibitory control after a single bout of HIFT exercise

Rewilding The ”Wild West”: Restoring Bison Populations In The American Prairie, Ana Christina Diaz

Posters - 2024

Historically, North America was home to a biodiverse and environmentally rich land, from beavers, mountain lions, numerous bird and insect species, and North America’s largest land mammal, the bison (Figure 1). The American bison (Bison bison), also referred to as buffalo, are a keystone species in their environments, meaning their absence can have detrimental effects on other species. Bison are environmental engineers that create a “mosaic of habitats” with their behaviors including wallowing, grazing, and defecating (American Prairie Foundation 2024). Bison once roamed from Canada to Mexico with a population estimated around 50 million but were tragically almost wiped to …
