Even though we have some of the best judges, lawyers, and law schools in the world, delays in the civil, criminal, and family justice systems are massive and increasing. Costs of legal help are going up. An increasing number of people are trying to represent themselves. Legal aid is available only for the least well-off and only for a limited range of services. Many communities feel alienated and do not see themselves represented by …

First-Principles Calculations Of Lattice Thermal Conductivity In Tl,3Vse4: Uncertainties From Different Approaches Of Force Constants, Zhi Li, Yi Xia, Chris Wolverton Apr 2024

First-Principles Calculations Of Lattice Thermal Conductivity In Tl,3Vse4: Uncertainties From Different Approaches Of Force Constants, Zhi Li, Yi Xia, Chris Wolverton

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Accurate and reliable first-principles simulations of lattice thermal conductivity (κL) of highly anharmonic crystals have long been challenging in condensed matter and materials physics. With recent theoretical advances, the calculation of κL has evolved into a sophisticated process requiring the consideration of higher levels of refinements, such as high-order phonon-phonon scattering, anharmonic phonon renormalization, and heat transport beyond the phonon gas picture. Interatomic force constants (IFCs), however, as a shared pillar of the above concepts, are sometimes ambiguously implemented in this process, resulting in non-negligible uncertainties among different studies. Here, we revisit the ultralow κL of Tl3VSe4 and make a …

Skills, Majors, And Jobs: Does Higher Education Respond?, Johnathan G. Conzelmann, Steven W. Hemelt, Brad J. Hershbein, Shawn Martin, Andrew Simon, Kevin M. Stange

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

How does postsecondary human capital investment respond to changes in labor market skill demand? We quantify the magnitude and nature of this response in the U.S. 4-year sector. To do so, we develop a new measure of institution-major-specific labor demand, and corresponding shift-share instrument, that combines job ads with alumni locations. We find that postsecondary human capital investments meaningfully respond. We estimate elasticities for degrees and credits centered around 1.3, generally increasing with time horizon. We provide evidence that both student demand and institutional supply-side constraints matter. Our findings illuminate the nature of educational production in higher education.

Improving Adaptation Of Deep Learning With Inductive Bias, Xiajun Jiang Apr 2024

Improving Adaptation Of Deep Learning With Inductive Bias, Xiajun Jiang

Theses

Human intelligence is strong at adapting to a small number of observations, partially because of the human ability to 1) use given knowledge and 2) distill knowledge from related but different data to guide learning for future tasks, where such ability is the inductive bias during learning. Deep learning shows a promising solution to artificial intelligence. However, generalizing or adapting deep learning models to heterogeneous tasks remains an open question. Existing data-driven models often ignore prior knowledge about the underlying problems of interest, or have limitations in incorporating complex knowledge into neural networks. The one-size-fit-all formula assumes the training and …
