Principals Who Lead Elementary Schools With Minimal Out-Of-School Suspensions, Jennifer Bordonaro

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Mixed-methods research was conducted in order to understand the principals of Minnesota elementary schools where no more than one out-of-school suspensions had been assigned annually from 2017 to 2022. The study consisted of a survey, document analysis, and qualitative interviews. While the findings did reveal commonalities amongst the participants that provided insight into the implementation of nonexclusionary discipline, the picture could not be deemed complete as the identified schools were predominantly White and affluent. There continues to be a great need to study leaders of schools where OSS is not statistically predictable by the school’s student population in regard to …

Communicating Across The Divide: Using Critical Communication Pedagogy As A Lens To Reimagine The Mediated Basic Communication Course As A Space Of Activism, Margaret Baker

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly influenced teaching and learning in mediated spaces, highlighting the challenges many historically excluded learners face in virtual environments. While previous research suggests that well-designed online courses can effectively support these students, communication education as a field has been slow to adopt virtual learning. This resistance has left many educators underprepared to develop equitable and impactful online coursework. Previous work has demonstrated the success of critical communication pedagogy (CCP) - which centers the experiences of traditionally underserved students and promotes collaborative learning - within face-to-face communication coursework (Fassett & Warren, 2007). As such, this dissertation investigates how …

Consideration For Expanding The Audiology Scope Of Practice To Include Prescription Medication Authority, Erin Grace Gill

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

The demand for medical professionals rises in conjunction with the rise of prescriptions written annually in the United States, but there are not enough physicians to meet the demand for patient prescriptions (Mohamadloo et al., 2019). In the United States, 2.4 million healthcare visits for acute otitis externa were recorded in 2007; approximately half were between the ages of 5-14 years old. Healthcare providers were estimated to have spent about 600,000 hours treating acute otitis externa.

Prescriptive authority is the ability of healthcare providers to prescribe specific medications, including controlled substances. Prescriptive authority is legally allocated by federal and state …

Mindful Movements Matter: Differentiating Active Body Movements In Underprivileged Students’ Learning Of Physics Concepts, Seokmin Kang, Mingtsan Lu, John B. Black, Sungyeun Kim

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Background

The theory of embodied cognition claims that body interaction with the environment change how we think and constitute cognition. Accordingly, active learning enriches learning experiences which in turn lead to better learning.

Purpose

Although learning by moving one’s body is often regarded as active learning, not all body movements lead to better learning. To investigate the influence of different levels of body movements on learning, we developed embodied learning activities and implemented in elementary afterschool program.

Sample

Twenty-seven fifth graders (12 girls, 15 boys) for Study 1 and forty-eight fifth graders (28 girls, 20 boys) for Study 2 were …

Digital Comics Subscription Service Usage And Its Impact On Printed Comic Buying Habits: The Digital Comics Subscription Loop, Isaac Swindle

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

This study developed a digital comics subscription loop that borrows from consumer loyalty research done in publishing and marketing studies. The proposed loop uses comic publisher’s proprietary subscription platforms as a “book showroom” to allow consumers to sample titles, driving physical sales. Original survey data was then gathered about comic book consumers’ usage of digital subscription platforms and what drives them to make physical purchases. The data was then compared to the proposed model, finding significant cross-medium consumption, as well as many reported completions of the Digital Comics Subscription Loop. The survey data found that over 80 percent of respondents …

Plagiarism Or Progress?: An Inquiry Into Generative Ai And Copyright, James Knight

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The emergence of accessible artificial intelligence (AI) in 2022, including notable models such as Chat GPT, Google Bard, and Microsoft Bing Chat, has sparked significant discourse regarding their societal impact. This paper delves into the contrasting perspectives regarding the role of Large Language Models (LLMs) in society, particularly in the realm of copyright law. While pessimists express concerns about the potential stifling of human ingenuity and innovation, optimists advocate for embracing AI's creative potential, advocating for legal reforms to address copyright issues. Focusing on the legal domain, this paper argues for amending US copyright law to accommodate AI-generated content, proposing …

Ensuring Equity In Medical Malpractice Cases For Low-Income Plaintiffs, Hassan El-Cheikh Apr 2024

Ensuring Equity In Medical Malpractice Cases For Low-Income Plaintiffs, Hassan El-Cheikh

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Every year in the United States, around 85,000 medical malpractice lawsuits are filed. These lawsuits are overwhelming and exhausting for the plaintiffs, while doctors report feelings of anxiety, denial, and panic. Due to the complexity of medical malpractice lawsuits and state legislators making it difficult for victims of medical negligence to sue, some attorneys require up-front payment to retain a medical expert witness. This typically costs over $500 per hour but depends on the specialty. For low-income individuals, these payments are simply unrealistic. However, if the government were to pay for the obtaining and retention of a medical expert witness …

The Tiktok Dilemma: Regulating Tiktok For Minors In The Age Of Free Speech, Julia Waters Apr 2024

The Tiktok Dilemma: Regulating Tiktok For Minors In The Age Of Free Speech, Julia Waters

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The influence of social media platforms, particularly TikTok, on the mental health and well-being of adolescents has become a matter of increasing concern. This paper examines the constitutionality of Montana's proposed ban on TikTok, arguing that while well-intentioned, such a ban would infringe upon citizens' First Amendment rights. Instead, the focus should be on addressing the underlying issues of data collection practices and content moderation. The paper proposes federal legislative solutions, including age verification requirements and amendments to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to hold social media platforms accountable for harmful content. By addressing these issues, policymakers can …

Incorporating Climate Considerations Into Investment Assessment Processes: Guidance For National And Local Governments, Esther Akwii, Grace Brennan, Leslie Hannay, Martin Dietrich Brauch, Nora Mardirossian Apr 2024

Incorporating Climate Considerations Into Investment Assessment Processes: Guidance For National And Local Governments, Esther Akwii, Grace Brennan, Leslie Hannay, Martin Dietrich Brauch, Nora Mardirossian

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

Global climate change impacts pose complex, dynamic challenges to the success of land-based investments — such as agriculture, forestry, and wind and solar energy — which can further exacerbate detrimental climate change impacts if they are not sustainably implemented. Countries outline in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) their goals and plans to reduce GHG emissions and adapt to climate change impacts. To ensure their success, governments must fully integrate their NDCs into national climate strategies, plans, and policies that drive government action and decisions. Improved land-based investment decision-making through the incorporation of climate considerations in investment assessment processes (IAPs) can …

Extending Mnrega To Address The Social, Economic And Ecological Costs Of Climate Change And Create Public Sector Climate Jobs, Shriraksha Mohan

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

Job Guarantee policies make public sector jobs available for those who are able and willing to work. Job guarantee schemes must work in a democratic and inclusive manner to tackle both unemployment and precarious employment, with the goal of eliminating poverty-wages and poor labor standards. In India, a social welfare measure for job guarantee, MNREGA – Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, was enacted in 2005 with the aim to guarantee the constitutional ‘right to work’. MNREGA scheme guarantees employment for 100 days to one individual in every rural household. In the context of climate-related events and disasters, this …

Detailing The Effects Of Cannabidiol On Exosome Release In Ewing’S Sarcoma, Bennett Hasley Apr 2024

Detailing The Effects Of Cannabidiol On Exosome Release In Ewing’S Sarcoma, Bennett Hasley

Theses

Ewing’s sarcoma (ES) is a highly aggressive pediatric cancer found within bone that carries a low five-year survival rate within its patients. This is due, in part, to the cancer’s high malignancy properties as well as the development of resistance to the chemotherapies used to combat this cancer. This project aims to determine if cannabidiol (CBD) has an effect on either exosome release or the protein, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) within ES cells. Exosomes are vesicles that can carry proteins and other signaling molecules which are released by the cell and allow for cell-to-cell communication. Within …

Asexuality In Science Fiction: A Study Of Non-Sexual Queer Intimacy In Short Stories By Ursula K. Le Guin, Samuel Delany, And Theodore Sturgeon, Mik Dressler Apr 2024

Asexuality In Science Fiction: A Study Of Non-Sexual Queer Intimacy In Short Stories By Ursula K. Le Guin, Samuel Delany, And Theodore Sturgeon, Mik Dressler

Honors College Theses

The study of asexuality is still a relatively new concept in queer studies, and the rarity of asexual literature poses questions about how media can help further develop this study. This question takes unique shape in the genre of science fiction, one deeply and intrinsically tied to queer storytelling but very often hypersexualized. This essay evaluates the asexual themes of four sci-fi short stories which predate modern vocabularies and frameworks of asexuality: “The Widget, The Wadget, and Boff” by Theodore Sturgeon, “Unchosen Love” and “Mountain Ways” by Ursula K. Le Guin, and “Aye, and Gomorrah” by Samuel Delany. Referencing queer …
