The implications of soy consumption on human health have been a subject of debate, largely due to the mixed evidence regarding its benefits and potential risks. The variability in responses to soy has been partly attributed to differences in the metabolism of soy isoflavones, compounds with structural similarities to estrogen. Approximately one-third of humans possess gut bacteria capable of converting soy isoflavone daidzein into equol, a metabolite produced exclusively by gut microbiota with significant estrogenic potency. In contrast, lab-raised rodents are efficient equol producers, except for those raised germ-free. This discrepancy raises concerns about the applicability of traditional rodent models …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Electric vehicles (EVs) are being introduced to lessen greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, air pollution, and reliance on fossil fuels. As a result of the government's aggressive promotion of EVs and rising environmental consciousness, EVs are quickly rising to the top of the low-carbon transportation market. Several viewpoints suggested that shifting to electric vehicles has been seen as a potential way to achieve sustainable mobility. Nevertheless, many studies discussed the obstacles and hurdles that obstruct the embracing of various electric-mobility (E-mobility) as EVs and electric-scooters (E-scooters) as eco-friendly means. Herein, we discussed these hurdles and determined them through surveys for prior …

A Novel Approach On Energy Of Λj-Dominating Single-Valued Neutrosophic Graph Structure, S.N. Suber Bathusha, S. Angelin Kavitha Raj
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The concept of dominance is one of the most important ideas in graph theory for handling random events, and it has drawn the interest from many scholars. Research related to graph energy has garnered a lot focus recently. The application of single-valued neutrosophic graphs (SVNGs) for energy, Laplacian energy, and dominating energy has been recommended by previous studies. In this research, we apply the concepts of single-valued neutrosophic sets (SVNS) to graph structures (GSs) and investigate some intriguing features of single-valued neutrosophic graph structures (SVNGS). Moreover, the notions of λJ-dominating energy GS in an SVNGS environment are analyzed in this …

Helping First Year Residential Students Transition To The Collegiate Environment, Jenna N. Mazurek
Masters Projects
The purpose of this project is to address the barriers faced by first-year residential students while making their transition from high school to college. Transitioning to a new environment can be overwhelming, so making sure first-year students feel prepared is an important part of the acclimation process. To make the acclimation period easier, first-year students should make sure they are aware of campus resources, and make sure they have a strong support network. The intervention for this problem is a first-year experience program set at Grand Valley State University called the Becoming a Laker Program. This program is designed to …

Small RNAs (microRNAs [miRNAs] or small interfering RNAs [siRNAs]) are effective tools for cancer therapy, but many of the existing carriers for their delivery are limited by low bioavailability, insufficient loading, impaired transport across biological barriers, and low delivery into the tumor microenvironment. Extracellular vesicle (EV)-based communication in mammalian and plant systems is important for many physiological and pathological processes, and EVs show promise as carriers for RNA interference molecules. However, some fundamental issues limit their use, such as insufficient cargo loading and low potential for scaling production. Plant-derived vesicles (PDVs) are membrane-coated vesicles released in the apoplastic fluid of …

BACKGROUND: Black Americans remain significantly underrepresented and understudied in research. Community-based interventions have been increasingly recognized as an effective model for reckoning with clinical trial participation challenges amongst underrepresented groups, yet a paucity of studies implement this approach. The present study sought to gain insight into Black male participants' perception of clinical trials before and after participating in a community-based team lifestyle intervention in the United States.
METHODS: Black Impact, a 24-week community-based lifestyle intervention, applied the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 (LS7) framework to assess changes in the cardiovascular health of seventy-four Black male participants partaking in weekly …

When perceived as threatening, social interactions have been shown to trigger the sympathoadrenal medullary system as well as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis resulting in a physiologic stress response. The allostatic load placed on human health and physiology in the context of acute and chronic stress can have profound health consequences. The purpose of this study was to develop a protocol for a lab-based stress stimulus using social-evaluative threat. While several valid, stress-stimulating protocols exist, we sought to develop one that triggered a physiologic response, did not require significant lab resources, and could be completed in around 10 min. We included 53 …

Opioid-related deaths are the leading cause of injury deaths in Utah. Individuals who seek treatment for opioid misuse report stigma from healthcare professionals as the leading barrier to accessing treatment. Health professionals provide a variety of treatment options in efforts of combating high rates of opioid misuse. However, these professionals may not be properly trained in stigma reduction strategies, thus leading to poor client care and outcomes. The current study examined the association between contact with individuals who misuse opioids and stigma perceptions among healthcare professionals. A one-time survey was administered to healthcare professionals who practice in Utah using convenience …

Facilitators And Challenges To Breastfeeding Among Postpartum Individuals In Western North Carolina, Rebecca Strasser, Liane Ventura, Melissa White-Archer, Kayla Winfield, Kate Beatty
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Breastfeeding provides health benefits for postpartum individuals and their infants. Healthy People 2030 seeks to increase 6-months exclusive breastfeeding to 42%, which has had little or no detectable change. North Carolina breastfeeding rates fall below this goal. As such, there is a continued need for research to close these gaps, particularly in South Central Appalachia. This work sought to contribute to the broader reproductive justice literature, by identifying facilitators and challenges to breastfeeding among postpartum individuals in Western North Carolina using the framework of Social Cognitive Theory. Postpartum individuals living in Western North Carolina, were recruited to complete semi-structured key …

Extraction Of Sandalwood Essential Oil: Isolating Α/Β-Santalol, Maeren Horton
Dr. Jay W. Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium [2023-2024]
Sandalwood oil is a high-value essential oil extracted from the heartwood of East Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album) and Australian Sandalwood (Santalum Spicatum) and is prominent in numerous luxury perfume brands due to its exotic, versatile, and pleasant fragrance. α-Santalol, the main aromatic constituent in S. album and S. spicatum, exhibits anti-aging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential anti-cancer properties, accounting for the oil’s medicinal and dermatologic applications. High demand of the oil resulted in excessive harvesting of sandalwood trees, necessitating a need to develop more efficient and sustainable extraction methods. This study investigates the efficiency of traditional extraction methods of sandalwood oil …

Birthing Contention: Conflict Between Black And White Health Officials In Southern Midwife Training In The Mid-Twentieth Century, Ruth Hyde Truman
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
"You can go right now and start talking to somebody about my age and Iil older and quite a bit older. They'll say, 'I was delivered by a granny midwife.' A black woman, a granny midwife." These words, spoken by Onnie Lee Logan in her book, Motherwit: An Alabama Midwife's Story, illustrate the important role that black women played in childbirth in the South in the mid-twentieth century. In the South, hospitals were located far from rural communities, and women were much more likely to give birth in their own homes and enlist the aid of a black midwife than …

In her journal entry for the morning of May 27, 1849, Zina D. H. Young recounted her morning's work in assisting Margaret Alley, a fellow wife of Brigham Young, during a sickness which had begun over a week earlier after Margaret had "over done" herself. Young wrote that while she stayed home from church meetings that day, Margaret "was relieved of a two month sickness-perfect form occasioned by a hurt." Margaret Alley had experienced a miscarriage. Taking to her journal again that evening, Young stated that her day had been quite busy, full of "little events" including Margaret's "misfortune," a …

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
In 1576, at the height of Catholic evangelization in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, an unnamed Catholic preacher met regularly with a congregation of indigenous Maya to teach them the doctrine of Christianity. He taught them about the biblical creation, as well as the nature of God and the devil, all from his own original doctrinal instructional manual. This preacher was also a Maya himself Between the years 1500 and 1800, only about 1,100 European-descended Catholic friars ministered to the tens of millions of Maya in Mesoamerica. Because there were so many natives and so few friars, they could not …

"Hiding By Showing": Hans Holbein's The Ambassadors As A Eucharistic Tableau, Katharine Davidson Bekker
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Liturgical cloths and hangings have been a ubiquitous part of the Eucharistic experience for Christian churchgoers for much of the Catholic Church's religious history. While often overshadowed or displaced in religious images by the drapery of individual figures, altar cloths and frontals are occasionally featured, as in the Master of the Aachen Altar's images of The Mass of St. Gregory (figs. I and 2). A similar green cloth to those in the St. Gregory images is seen in the background of Hans Holbein the Younger's 1533 portrait of The Ambassadors (fig. 3). Though much has been said about many of …

When writing of her friendship with Henry James, Edith Wharton described their relationship as "an atmosphere of the rarest understanding, the richest and most varied mental comradeship." The friendship began in 1900, when Wharton sent James a brief note congratulating him on a recent publication. They struck up a correspondence, one chat lasted nearly fifteen years. Wharton would lacer reflect on the relationship in her autobiography, calling it "a real marriage of true minds," built upon a shared love of writing and reading. This relationship is documented in large part because of their vast correspondence, as the two authors shared …

The Effects Of Various Alcohols On Hexane Production In The Pretreatment Of Lignocellulose, Noah Blevins
The Effects Of Various Alcohols On Hexane Production In The Pretreatment Of Lignocellulose, Noah Blevins
Dr. Jay W. Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium [2023-2024]
To meet the growing demand for biofuel, it is imperative to find more efficient methods to process nonedible biomass. Previous studies have shown low temperature alcohol pretreatment to be a viable method to extract hexane from cellulose, as would be available in lignocellulosic biomass. The purpose of this study was to fill gaps in this research, determining the optimal hydrogen bronze and alcohol to maximize the hexane output, to verify glucose was produced from the procedure, and to ensure that peaks believed to represent hexane were accurate. The results of trials performed at 195°C in sealed hydrothermal vessels with various …

Effect Of Lowered Light Quality (R:Fr Ratio) At Targeted Organs On Branching Of Trifolium Repens, M J.M Hay, Ch Robin, P C.D Newton, A Cresswell, J Tilbrook
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
This report examined results from four similarly conducted experiments using Trifolium repens in which the R:FR ratio but not the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) of incident light was altered at specific organ(s) of several successive phytomers or just at a single phytomer. Results indicate the local response to lowered R:FR light treatment was similar irrespective of the number of phytomers treated. This response pattern provides the means whereby plants can initiate strong localised responses to a heterogeneous light environment.
Theoretical And Observed Relationships Between Defoliation And Partitioning In Grasses, C P.D. Birch, B Thornton
Theoretical And Observed Relationships Between Defoliation And Partitioning In Grasses, C P.D. Birch, B Thornton
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A model is presented that analyses the potential effect of vertebrate grazing on the partitioning of grasses. Its conclusions are: 1) When grazing is sufficiently frequent and severe, grasses can increase their net increase in biomass by partitioning growth to reserves. 2) Partitioning growth to reserves greatly reduces leaf growth between defoliations. After repeated clipping, dryland browntop (Agrostis castellana) and red fescue (Festuca rubra) allocated a smaller proportion of growth between defoliations to leaves than ryegrass (Lolium perenne) or rough meadow-grass (Poa trivialis). Browntop and fescue achieved less leaf growth than ryegrass …

Effects Of Light Intensity And Defoliation On The Receptiveness For Primary Induction In Festuca Pratensis Huds, Lars T. Havstad
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Seedlings of Festuca pratensis Huds. (cv. Salten) were raised at three different light intensities (141, 85 or 28 (mol m-2s-1 ) for 7 weeks after emergence and then either left uncut or defoliated 40 or 80% of total leaf area, before transfer to primary induction (6°C, natural short days) for 12, 15 or 18 weeks. Percentage of heading plants was more affected by the duration of primary induction than by light intensity and defoliation prior to induction. The results lend no support to the existence of a juvenile stage in seedlings of Festuca pratensis. Defoliation had less influence on …

Water Use Efficiency In Chilean And Argentine Humid Temperate Grass-Legume Pastures, H G. Landi, M H. Wade, V Garcia De Cortazar, D E. Dalla Valle
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
At two sites in Argentina and Chile five levels of water input were applied to four sown pastures of varying ages during spring and summer. The pastures consisted principally of C3 grasses and legumes, some of which were sown such as Lolium perenne, Trifolium repens, Dactylis glomerata. Dry matter (DM) production was measured and related to the estimated total evapotranspiration (ET): responses were both highly linear. Both responses to ET and absolute yields were higher at the Argentinian than at the Chilean site: respectively 10.7 and 15.2 kg DM/mm water evapotranspired. Nevertheless the calculated indices of sensitivity (Ky) of Doorenbos …

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of defoliation and water stress on leaf anatomy and the mesophyll cell ultrastructure of Poa ligularis. Anatomical differences were detected mainly at epidermal level. Under water stress, leaf roughness was enhanced since the epidermal-cell surface contours became conspicuous. Under defoliation the microscopic roughness decreased as a result of fewer epicuticular wax crystals being formed. Defoliation produced an enhancement of the interlamellar spaces in the irrigated plantís chloroplast. Under no defoliation conditions, chloroplast structure was not affected by water stress. When subjected to water stress, lightly defoliated plants presented chloroplasts …
