Stripe Order, Impurities, And Symmetry Breaking In A 3-Dimensional Model Of A Diluted Frustrated Magnet, James Elverson, Thomas Vojta
Stripe Order, Impurities, And Symmetry Breaking In A 3-Dimensional Model Of A Diluted Frustrated Magnet, James Elverson, Thomas Vojta
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Many quantum materials feature low-temperature phases that break realspace symmetries in addition to spin or charge symmetries. Examples include stripe phases in cuprate superconductors, nematic phases in iron pnictides, and spin-density waves in magnetic materials. Realistic materials always contain some quenched disorder or randomness. To understand the effect of disorder on phases that break real-space symmetries, we investigate the influence of spinless impurities on a frustrated 3-dimensional J 1-J2 Ising model through Monte Carlo simulations. Spin less impurities generate random field type disorder for the spin-density wave (stripe) phase in this system. Whereas the long-range stripe order is destroyed by …

The development of non-intrusive, laser-based diagnostic techniques has significantly enhanced supersonic experimental aerodynamics, enabling the measurement of many parameters in complex flow fields. Among these techniques, Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry, capable of measuring 3 components of velocity in 3-dimensional volumes, is now available at the Aerodynamics Research Laboratory of the Missouri University of Science and Technology. To integrate this new system into the university's supersonic wind tunnel, a redesigned nozzle, test section, and diffuser have been implemented. The upgraded modular test section features 4 large ports which can be configured with windows for optical diagnostics or lead plates for model …
Development Of Colpitts Self Oscillator, Jasmin Billingsley
Development Of Colpitts Self Oscillator, Jasmin Billingsley
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Topological materials can serve as promising platforms for next-generation technology. Magnetism in such systems is often a consequence of emergent quantum phenomena, and the traditional framework is insufficient to fully describe their magnetic properties. In this project, we will perform precision magnetic measurements utilizing the Colpitts self-oscillator to determine the temperature- and field-dependent AC magnetic susceptibility in the topological magnetic materials. The collective knowledge learned from this proposed research would shed light on the understanding of exotic magnetism in topological materials, potentially leading to new physics of magnetism.

Simulating Inter-Species Competition In C. Elegans, Kevin Lai
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
In biological research, understanding the life cycles of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is pivotal for insights into developmental biology, genetics, and population dynamics. Our project builds on Worm-Pop, a Python-based multi-agent simulation of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) , to enhance its capabilities in simulating survival strategies, reproductive success, and genetic drift. The current model simulates a uniform population without inter-agent interactions. I plan to introduce multiple species of worms into the simulation to study competitive dynamics and determine which variants are most successful under various conditions. Pheromones significantly influence C. elegans behavior, affecting mating, foraging, and social interactions. To address …

Iron Doped Zeolitic Materials For Propane Dehydrogenation Catalyst, Emily Cahill, Amitava Choudhury
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
This research describes the synthesis of iron-doped zeolitic catalysts for the transformation of propane to propylene. The goal of this research is to develop a dehydrogenation catalyst to convert shale-gas derived cheap propane feedstock to economically valuable propylene, while at the same time making this catalyst sustainable and non-toxic to the environment. Fedoped zeolitic frameworks have shown promising activity in percentage of conversion and in selectivity. In our study we analyzed zeolites ZSM-5 and AIP0-5. These were chosen because they have differences in pore structure , channel sizes, and connectivity between channels. Most importantly the differences in the chemistry as …
Cytokinesis And Dbf2, Katharine Gray, Katie Shannon
Cytokinesis And Dbf2, Katharine Gray, Katie Shannon
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
During cell division, the cytoplasm must be divided between the parent and daughter cell. The Mitotic Exit Network (MEN) is a signaling pathway that allows a dividing cell to exit mitosis and complete cytokinesis. Obf2 is a MEN protein kinase in yeast, which provides a simplified model for studying this conserved pathway. By regulating Dbf2s' activity through phosphorylation mutants, its effect on cytokinesis can be studied. Cells were viewed under a microscope, to visualize division errors. Yeast cells that fail to complete cytokinesis will form chains, as the budding daughter cells fail to separate from their parents. Chains of 3 …

Density Fluctuations Measurements In Supersonic Flows, Allie Dingfield, Davide Vigano
Density Fluctuations Measurements In Supersonic Flows, Allie Dingfield, Davide Vigano
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Turbulence in compressible flows plays a major role in a variety of aerospace applications. However, due to fluctuating thermodynamic quantities, compressible turbulence is challenging to analyze. Of these quantities, density fluctuations are of high importance due to their role in describing turbulence. A method to obtain quantitative measurements of density fluctuations has been developed using the optical technique of shadowgraph imaging. Shadowgraph imaging has frequently been used to obtain qualitative information about density gradients in fluids. However, quantitative application of these methods is much less common. The quantitative shadowgraph method presented here relates the light intensity variations in an image …

Symposium: Gender, Health & The Constitution: On The Constitutional Requirement For Adequate Prenatal Care Post-Dobbs, Ainslee Johnson-Brown
ConLawNOW
This Essay argues that state abortion statutes codifying government interests in the health and welfare of the unborn trigger a constitutional right to prenatal care where adequate medical care is constitutionally required in the penal system. It explores the healthcare mandates required by the U.S. Constitution in the era before the passage of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs, specifically looking at abortion access and prenatal provisions in the penological system. It then dissects abortion-related legislation passed by various states in the wake of Dobbs—emphasizing language within the legislative findings that could trigger a constitutional obligation for prenatal …

Voltage Scaled Low Power Dnn Accelerator Design On Reconfigurable Platform, Rourab Paul, Sreetama Sarkar, Suman Sau, Sanghamitra Roy, Koushik Chakraborty, Amlan Chakrabarti
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The exponential emergence of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) has accelerated research on hardware implementation of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). Among all DNN processors, domain-specific architectures such as Google’s Tensor Processor Unit (TPU) have outperformed conventional GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and CPUs (Central Processing Units). However, implementing low-power TPUs in reconfigurable hardware remains a challenge in this field. Voltage scaling, a popular approach for energy savings, can be challenging in FPGAs, as it may lead to timing failures if not implemented appropriately. This work presents an ultra-low-power FPGA implementation of a TPU for edge applications. We divide the systolic array of …
Glacial Resource Analysis – Castner Glacier, Alaska, Logan Erichsen
Glacial Resource Analysis – Castner Glacier, Alaska, Logan Erichsen
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Glaciers cover much of the 49th U.S. state of Alaska. While many of these are deep blues, just as many are “rock” glaciers which means the glacier is covered in sediment. This sediment can be transported many miles through the mountain ranges. With the current climate melting these glaciers they are receding. Sediment and rock samples can now be safely collected from different locations where glaciers have released sediment that was locked in the ice for an untold number of years. Much of the USGS data comes from the 1940’s through 1960’s due to the size and remoteness of Alaska. …

Structure Of A Class Of Ordinary Differential Equations, Letao Chang
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
In the realm of mathematics, an ordinary differential equation (ODE) denotes a particular type of differential equation contingent solely upon a single independent variable. Similar to other differential equations, an ODE involves one or more functions as its unknowns and encompasses derivatives of these functions. The designation "ordinary" serves to distinguish these equations from partial differential equations, which may pertain to multiple independent variables.

Rocketry has always been a fun challenge for me. Since not only was I able to learn something new every time I did it, but I was able to do something with my hands as well. One area that has been very challenging for me is how to put a tracker onto a rocket that has no electronics bay. And studying for the L2 Certification tests. And this poster shows my thoughts and process I did to pass my L2 Certification Flight.
