University Research

Synthetic porphyrins have been crucial as models for heme units and other biological porphyrins, as well as components of advanced materials and catalysts. Much of the work on synthetic porphyrins has focused on the meso-substituted 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) or the pyrrole-substituted 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin (OEP). In this report, we present a comprehensive spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational study of free-base, zinc(II), and copper(II) 5,10,15,20-tetrapentylporphyrin (TPeP). TPeP can be prepared via a two-step, one-flask reaction of pyrrole and hexanal mediated by Montmorillonite K10, followed by oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) in yields of around 40%. Similar to TPP, the TPeP systems have the highest occupied molecular …

Introduction: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is a leading cause of incurred personal healthcare costs and disability in the USA. It disproportionately affects rural populations, who are more likely to be uninsured, lack access to a regular healthcare provider and experience a higher prevalence of CMP. As a result of reduced access to non-pharmacological care, there is greater reliance on opioids. The Auricular Point Acupressure - Self-Management (APA-SM) program is a simple, needleless, evidence-based therapy that empowers individuals to self-manage their pain. Preliminary studies, including a recent UG3 pilot testing, demonstrated feasibility, safety and significant improvements in pain and function. Guided …

Nanosecond Policies: Comparing Us And Chinese Approaches To High-Frequency Trading Regulation, Bilal Laghari Jun 2026

Nanosecond Policies: Comparing Us And Chinese Approaches To High-Frequency Trading Regulation, Bilal Laghari

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

High frequency trading has transformed global financial markets, introducing both efficiency gains and significant regulatory concerns. This Note analyzes the divergent approaches of the United States and China in regulating high frequency trading, focusing on how each system addresses issues of market manipulation, information asymmetry, and systemic risk. It contends that the United States’ reliance on outdated and indirect regulatory mechanisms, such as Regulation NMS, has failed to keep pace with technological advancements. In contrast, China’s more recent and targeted regulatory framework provides clearer guidance and stronger oversight of high frequency trading practices. This Note concludes that a hybrid approach, …

Rethinking International Armed Conflict: Legal Challenges In The Age Of Hybrid Warfare, Oleksandr Havryshuk, Roman Hryshchenko

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

The binary classification of armed conflicts under international humanitarian law (IHL) — distinguishing international armed conflicts (IACs) from non-international armed conflicts (NIACs) — was forged in the aftermath of World War II and increasingly fails to capture the realities of twenty-first century warfare. Hybrid tactics, cyber operations, the proliferation of private military companies (PMCs), the expanding role of non-state actors, and the near-disappearance of formal declarations of war have eroded the analytical utility of the existing framework, generating legal uncertainty and weakening protections for affected populations. This Article critically examines the conceptual foundations of IAC as set out in Common …

Home Is Not Always Where The Heart Is: Examining The Inadequacy Of Legal Measures In The Deportation Of American Intercountry Adoptees, Katie X. Kaessinger, Esq. Jun 2026

Home Is Not Always Where The Heart Is: Examining The Inadequacy Of Legal Measures In The Deportation Of American Intercountry Adoptees, Katie X. Kaessinger, Esq.

San Diego International Law Journal

Despite entering the United States legally as children through intercountry adoption, thousands of American adoptees face deportation as adults because their parents failed to finalize their citizenship. Many of these adoptees have no meaningful linguistic, cultural, or familiar ties to their birth countries, and most have lived in the United States practically their entire lives. This Article explores the legal implications regarding the deportation of intercountry adoptees. More specifically, this Article argues that the deportation of intercountry adoptees reflects a grave systemic failure that violates international human rights law, rather than a mere shortcoming of domestic immigration policy.

Consulting various …

Invisible Nations: Self-Determination As A Legal Shield For The World’S Last Isolated Peoples, Paige Schacher Jun 2026

Taxation And Birthright Citizenship, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Jun 2026

Taxation And Birthright Citizenship, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

Under the 14th Amendment, individuals who are born in the United States are U.S. citizens and citizens of the state where they reside if they are “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States. The debate surrounding birthright citizenship focuses on the meaning of jurisdiction in this context. The majority view is that it just means territoriality jurisdiction, so that anyone born within the United States is automatically a citizen regardless of the immigration status of their parents. The minority view is that jurisdiction is related to political allegiance (nationality jurisdiction), which is why children born to diplomats, members of …

Fibonacci Global History Length (Fihl) Dynamic Branch Predictor Architecture, Gopi K. Tummala Jun 2026

Fibonacci Global History Length (Fihl) Dynamic Branch Predictor Architecture, Gopi K. Tummala

Defensive Publications Series

The Fibonacci Global History Length (FIHL) Branch Predictor is a highly constrained hardware architecture designed to optimize speculative execution in deeply pipelined microprocessors. Operating within a strict 32-kilobit hardware budget, the FIHL architecture synthesizes the frameworks of perceptron learning and hash indexing while replacing traditional geometric history length progressions with the Fibonacci sequence. By natively mapping global history lengths to the Fibonacci sequence across six parallel branch history tables, the design efficiently correlates both highly localized instruction patterns and distant control-flow dependencies without the exponential memory footprint of traditional pattern history tables. Empirical evaluations across diverse workloads demonstrate that this …

Crowdsourced Biometric Synchronization For Video Intensity Mapping And Benchmarking, Alan She Jun 2026

Crowdsourced Biometric Synchronization For Video Intensity Mapping And Benchmarking, Alan She

Defensive Publications Series

This paper describes a biometric-to-video synchronization engine that pairs wearable physiological sensors with a distributed video platform for crowdsourced intensity mapping and normalized effort-based benchmarking. Fitness video content on open platforms typically relies on subjective difficulty labels assigned by creators, which fail to account for the physiological diversity of viewers. The synchronization engine establishes a temporal sync anchor between a wearable device's biometric data stream and the video playback timeline, employing clock-drift compensation to align UTC-stamped biometric packets with the relative playback head and a latency correction algorithm to account for physiological response delay. As anonymized, normalized heart rate data …

Dynamic Viewport Slicing And Client-Side Compositing For Bandwidth-Optimized Live Video Broadcasting, Nikita Agarwal Jun 2026

Dynamic Viewport Slicing And Client-Side Compositing For Bandwidth-Optimized Live Video Broadcasting, Nikita Agarwal

Defensive Publications Series

This paper describes a dual-stream video delivery system for live broadcasting that reduces transmitted bandwidth by encoding only the region of active motion at full resolution. In typical live sports broadcasts, the area of viewer interest occupies only 15-20% of the video frame, while the surrounding background consumes bandwidth at uniform quality. The described system repurposes raw motion vectors generated during the AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) encoding pass to compute an action centroid coordinate, bypassing neural network-based analysis.

The encoder splits the broadcast into two concurrent layers: a full-frame background aggressively compressed to low resolution and a bounding-box action crop …

Blade-Integrated Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Micro-Cooling Distribution Unit For High-Density Data Centers, N/A, N/A Jun 2026

Blade-Integrated Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Micro-Cooling Distribution Unit For High-Density Data Centers, N/A, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

A decentralized liquid cooling architecture for high-density data center racks integrates a micro-cooling distribution unit (mCDU) directly onto each server blade or chassis wall. The mCDU, an additively manufactured monolithic block of titanium or aluminum, replaces centralized rack-level heat exchangers and their associated plumbing. Its internal structure uses a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattice, such as a Schwarz-P or Schwarz-D geometry, to create two intertwined, co-continuous fluid paths. One path circulates hot coolant from the server components while the other circulates cold facility water. This TPMS geometry has a large surface-area-to-volume ratio for thermal exchange and results in low …

Predictive Hardware State Mitigation Using Telemetry And Feedback, Mohsen Heidarinejad, Farid Kenarangi, Arpit Mittal, Amin Khajeh

Defensive Publications Series

Varying computational tasks introduce thermal and power dependencies within modern computing devices. Static threshold policies might not fully capture cumulative operational stress, potentially causing over-throttling or delayed hardware responses. A closed-loop machine learning framework is disclosed that dynamically evaluates multidimensional telemetry data to compute a predictive risk score. A feature selector extracts direct measurements, system activity indicators, temporal features, and health indicators. Based on the calculated risk score, an arbitrator dynamically applies mitigation actions (e.g., scaling component voltage and frequency states). A model corrector operates during hardware idle periods to iteratively refine predictive modeling using observed performance metrics. The disclosed …

Fused Arithmetic Datapath For Bit‑Slicing Multiply‑And‑Accumulate Units, Dongseok Im, Hee Jun Park Jun 2026

Fused Arithmetic Datapath For Bit‑Slicing Multiply‑And‑Accumulate Units, Dongseok Im, Hee Jun Park

Defensive Publications Series

Many modern processing systems utilizing bit‑scalable architectures may experience performance limitations due to dynamic power consumption from heavy integer arithmetic operations. Executing higher‑precision quantized matrix multiplications on lower‑precision multiply‑and‑accumulate (MAC) hardware typically requires calculating multiple independent partial products, which may lower computational efficiency. The disclosed processing system derives cross‑product terms simultaneously through a fused mathematical operation. Specifically, it uses pre‑multiplication addition on decomposed operand segments and executes a post‑multiplication subtraction to isolate the cross‑products. This approach reduces the total number of hardware multiplication operations utilized per calculation. By reducing these redundant steps, the processing system may lower dynamic power consumption, …

Generative Media Repair For Uninterrupted Transcoding With An Asynchronous Approval, Nikita Agarwal Jun 2026

Generative Media Repair For Uninterrupted Transcoding With An Asynchronous Approval, Nikita Agarwal

Defensive Publications Series

The process of ingesting large-scale media files may be interrupted by data corruption, which can necessitate a re-upload and re-transcode, consuming network and computational resources. Described systems and methods can address this by detecting corruption during ingestion, generating a provisional synthetic patch for the corrupted portion, and allowing the transcoding process to proceed. A cryptographic manifest can be created to document the change, and the provisionally repaired asset may be held in a quarantined state. An asynchronous approval workflow can then allow a content partner to review, approve, or reject the patch, with a fallback for providing a corrected segment. …

Systems for routing interactive content, for example, from a primary display to a specific user's device in a multi-user environment, can present challenges in identifying the intended recipient. This disclosure describes systems and methods that can combine spatial data with orientation data to help ascertain user intent. For example, spatial positioning of devices may be determined using ultra-wideband (UWB) radio signals, while an inertial measurement unit in a handheld control device (e.g., a remote control, smartphone, or wearable device) can track its orientation. By fusing these data streams, a directional vector can be projected from the control device. A target …

Agentic Graph Querying On A Sharded Architecture Using A Large Language Model, Sai Charan Tej Kommuri Jun 2026

Agentic Graph Querying On A Sharded Architecture Using A Large Language Model, Sai Charan Tej Kommuri

Defensive Publications Series

Using large language models (LLMs) to query large, scale, graph, structured data can present challenges, as encoding an entire graph into a single prompt may exceed context window limits and can lead to reduced accuracy on multi-hop queries. Systems and methods can partition a graph into a collection of smaller, human-readable documents, or shards. An agentic orchestration process may use a global symbolic index, contained within a summary shard, to locate and retrieve relevant shards on demand. This process can decompose a complex query into a sequence of single-hop LLM calls, where each call can operate on a context comprising …

The Hybrid Path Architecture For Live Application Telemetry And Control, Stephen Norum, Christopher Burns, Leila Al-Muhtasib

Defensive Publications Series

Standard tools for analyzing software often slow down the programs they are testing and create data logjams, making it hard to catch fast-moving glitches. This system solves that problem by splitting communication into different "paths." It creates a high-speed lane for data to flow directly from the app to a dashboard, skipping the usual middleman tools that cause delays. Developers can also add new diagnostic tools to an app while it is already running without needing to change the code or restart it. This allows for real-time monitoring and fixing of apps with much less impact on their performance.

Fisheye Camera Object Detection For Traffic Surveillance, Hugo Yang, Robert Luo

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

Effective traffic management is hampered by the physical limitations of traditional pinhole cameras, whose narrow fields of view create blind spots that require costly multi-camera infrastructure to overcome. Fisheye cameras offer a wide-angle alternative capable of single-camera intersection coverage, but the radial distortion inherent in their optics renders standard object detection algorithms unreliable, limiting their practical deployment in traffic surveillance.

This thesis investigates specialized object detection pipelines for fisheye traffic imagery by reproducing and building upon two top-ranked submissions from the 2025 AI City Challenge Track 4: the VNPT and SKKU-AutoLab pipelines. Both were successfully reconstructed outside their original containerized …
