Bunching In Real-Estate Markets: Regulated Building Heights In New York City, Jan K. Brueckner, David Leather, Michael Zerecero
Bunching In Real-Estate Markets: Regulated Building Heights In New York City, Jan K. Brueckner, David Leather, Michael Zerecero
Business Faculty Articles and Research
This paper presents a real-estate application of the bunching methodology widely used in other areas of applied microeconomics. The focus is on regulated building heights in New York City, where developers can exceed a parcel’s regulated height by incurring additional costs. Using the bunching methodology, we estimate the magnitude of these extra costs, with the results showing a modest increase in the marginal cost of floor space beyond the regulated building height. We use these estimates to predict the additional floor space that would be created by complete removal of building-height regulation in NYC. While this last exercise is circumscribed …

Rubble pile asteroids are widely understood to be composed of reaccumulated debris following a catastrophic collision between asteroids in the main asteroid belt, where each disruption can make a family of new asteroids. Near-Earth asteroids Ryugu and Bennu have been linked to collisional families in the main asteroid belt, but surface age analyses of each asteroid suggest these bodies are substantially younger than their putative families. Here we show, through a coupled collisional and dynamical evolution of members of these families, that neither asteroid was likely to have been created at the same time as the original family breakups, but …

Significant star formation is present in this region, and lines of sight pass through three arms of the Galaxy (Orion-Cygnus, Perseus, and an outer arm). Using the Green Bank Telescope, we recorded 200 MHz of bandwidth for 4.5 minutes at 81.92 μs resolution for each of 3457 observed survey pointings during 2016 and 2017, covering about two-thirds of the total area. We searched these data for pulsars and report the discovery of …
Predicting Homelessness: Housing Risk Insights From Latent Class Analysis, Katherine E. Marcal, Nicholas Barr
Predicting Homelessness: Housing Risk Insights From Latent Class Analysis, Katherine E. Marcal, Nicholas Barr
Social Work Faculty Research
Millions of families with children in the U.S. struggle to afford adequate housing. Housing cost burden places families at risk for homelessness, and prevention efforts are hindered by limited understanding of insecure housing experiences at the margins. The present study investigated variation in housing insecurity experiences in a sample of mothers, as well as which risk profiles were most strongly associated with subsequent homelessness. Latent class analysis identified four distinct subgroups of housing insecurity: “Stable,” “Unstable,” “Rent-Focused,” and “Strategic Bill-Paying.” Classes differed on whether they made rent or utility payments on time, experienced utility shutoffs, or were evicted. Mothers who …

On The Intellectual Horizons Of Social Realism: A Response To Barton, Jim Hordern
On The Intellectual Horizons Of Social Realism: A Response To Barton, Jim Hordern
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper comments on the arguments made in ‘knowledge without disciplines: a critique of social realism’s disciplinary fixation’, authored by Keith Barton. It is suggested that Barton has not fully grasped how social realism views disciplines and curricula and that this reflects a wider tendency amongst commentators to overlook some of the thinking underpinning social realism. A different, more generous interpretation of social realism is outlined in respect of disciplinarity, the constitution of knowledge, the relationship between disciplines and subjects and the socio-epistemic formation that make knowledgeability possible. Social realism is seen as having already made a substantive impact, with …

A Biobehavioral Observational Study To Understand The Multilevel Determinants Of Cardiovascular Health In Black Women: The Bloom Study Protocol, Yue Liao, R. Matthew Brothers, Kyrah K. Brown, Rebecca E. Lee
Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive
Background The racial/ethnic and gender disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality in the United States are evident. Across nearly every metric, non-Hispanic Black women have poorer overall cardiovascular health. Emerging evidence shows a disproportionately high burden of increased CVD risk factors in Black women of childbearing age, which has a far-reaching impact on both maternal and child outcomes, resulting in premature onset of CVD and further widens the racial disparities in CVD. There is growing recognition that the fundamental driver of persistent racial/ethnic disparities in CVD, as well as disparities in behavioral risk factors such as physical activity …
Drop Dynamics And Heat Transfer During Dropwise Condensation On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Shaur Humayun
Drop Dynamics And Heat Transfer During Dropwise Condensation On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Shaur Humayun
Theses and Dissertations
As we seek to address the escalating demand for energy and water, superhydrophobic surfaces have gained the attention of researchers due to their potential to boost condensation heat transfer rates and improve efficiency across various applications. One way to significantly improve dropwise condensation heat transfer rate is to improve drop mobility. Water-repelling properties of superhydrophobic surfaces can help in reducing the size of condensed drops as they depart the surface, thus increasing drop refresh rates by increasing drop mobility. Accurate models of retention forces between drops and superhydrophobic surfaces are needed for predicting drop dynamics including drop mobility. Once drop …
Transcriptional Precision In Photoreceptor Development And Diseases - Lessons From The Retinal Transcription Factor Crx, Yiqiao Zheng
Transcriptional Precision In Photoreceptor Development And Diseases - Lessons From The Retinal Transcription Factor Crx, Yiqiao Zheng
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Precise gene expression programs are foundational to organism development and homeostasis. Transcription factors play a central role in establishing and maintaining these programs. Large-scale transcriptomic studies have generated parts lists of transcription factors. However, these descriptive works rarely formulate a cohesive model of how these transcription factors work together to support a functional organism. Mutations that affect transcription factor functions can lead to a broad range of human diseases. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the principles that transcription factors achieve spatial, temporal, and quantitative precision in their regulated gene expression programs. I have investigated transcriptional regulation in rod and …

The terms “offshore” and “open ocean” have been used to describe aquaculture sites that are further from the coast or in higher energy environments. Neither term has been clearly defined in the scientific literature nor in a legal context, and the terms are often used interchangeably. These and other related terms (for example “exposed”, “high-energy”) variously refer to aspects of a site such as the geographic distance from shore or infrastructure, the level of exposure to large waves and strong currents, the geographic fetch, the water depth, or some combination of these parameters. Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
It is important to address the concept of parental involvement in school-based mental health counseling in order to address the presence of mental health issues in students. In school-based mental health services, enlisting parent engagement in adolescent interventions can be difficult and can, therefore, inhibit positive adolescent mental health outcomes. This case study examined an educational organization in the southwestern United States to identify barriers inhibiting parent involvement in adolescent school-based mental health and to explore strategies to encourage parent engagement. Rhinophyma, characterized by hypertrophy of sebaceous glands, often necessitates surgical intervention. This is the second case report of the off-label use of the Versajet II Hydrosurgery System (VJHS) (Smith & Nephew, London, UK) in the United States for the treatment of rhinophyma and the first systematic review of the literature, emphasizing its efficacy and safety for this indication. A surgical debulking and resurfacing was performed on a patient with rhinophyma. The patient underwent general anesthesia along with bilateral infraorbital blocks and local infiltration of lidocaine 1% with epinephrine. The VJHS was utilized for progressive debulking followed by debridement using sharp …

This is a case study examining the impact three historical events had on six current and former Black residents from Haywood County, Tennessee. The rhetorical examination, which includes oral narratives, media texts, and historical accounts, focuses on how these individuals maneuvered through the social and political restrictions set in place during a period of racial segregation from 1940 to 1965. The qualitative study includes reflections of lived experiences in the rural South and resistance to the laws that restricted Black freedom. Study participants provide insight into three events that have been largely suppressed and bring forth counternarratives that frame how …
