Micro-Topographic Control On Soil Moisture And Ph Dynamics In A Northern Peatland Ecosystem: A Case Study From Saco Heath, Maine, Henry Mahoney Jul 2026

Micro-Topographic Control On Soil Moisture And Ph Dynamics In A Northern Peatland Ecosystem: A Case Study From Saco Heath, Maine, Henry Mahoney

Student Publications

Peatland ecosystems are characterized by complex structural microtopography, prominently featuring elevated hummocks and depressed hollows that establish critical micro-environmental and ecohydrological gradients. This study investigates the influence of micro-topographic positioning on soil moisture and pH dynamics at the Saco Heath Preserve; a raised acid bog located in southern Maine. Data collection was focused entirely within Sphagnum moss, which serve as the dominant vegetative component across multiple structural hummocks and hollows. Using a systematic temporal framework and a robust spatial sampling strategy (n = 100 per micro-habitat) between July 16 and August 16, we quantified physical moisture contents and chemical pH …

The Integration Of Psychology And Theology: An Examination Of Personality And Spiritual Gifts In Christian Formation, Vocation, And Everyday Ministry, Suzannah W. Driver Jul 2026

The Integration Of Psychology And Theology: An Examination Of Personality And Spiritual Gifts In Christian Formation, Vocation, And Everyday Ministry, Suzannah W. Driver

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

Human beings are created in the image of God, formed through relationship with Him, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to participate in His mission. Yet personality and spiritual gifts are often considered separately, leaving believers with fragmented language for understanding who they are, how they have been formed, and how they are called to serve. Psychology offers meaningful insight into patterns of thought, emotion, behavior, and relationship, while theology grounds identity in divine creation, spiritual formation, and Spirit-empowered purpose. When these perspectives remain divided, believers may understand parts of themselves without recognizing how those dimensions work together within the …

Framework For Building A Social Media Marketing Strategy For Micro-Small Businesses, Joanna Byrne Jul 2026

Framework For Building A Social Media Marketing Strategy For Micro-Small Businesses, Joanna Byrne

Ethical Visual Truth: An Analysis On Vietnam War Photojournalism, Anna Lauryn Carmichael Jul 2026

Ethical Visual Truth: An Analysis On Vietnam War Photojournalism, Anna Lauryn Carmichael

Theses

This thesis examines the ethical dimensions of Vietnam War photojournalism through close analysis of four iconic photographs: Nick Ut's The Terror of War (Napalm Girl) , Eddie Adams's Saigon Execution , Catherine Leroy's Vietnam, February 1967 , and Gilles Caron's Untitled (Who's the Enemy Here?) . Rather than treating these images as transparent documentation, this thesis argues that Vietnam War photojournalism functioned as a contested medium of narrative construction, one whose most celebrated images achieved iconic status by conforming to Western visual conventions and institutional demands, rather than by capturing some unmediated truth. Drawing on the interconnected frameworks of visual …

Visual Structure, Cultural Memory, And Viewership In Early Medieval Irish High Crosses, Trinity Smith Jul 2026

Visual Structure, Cultural Memory, And Viewership In Early Medieval Irish High Crosses, Trinity Smith

Theses

This thesis examines how Irish high crosses functioned as structured visual forms through which religious authority and cultural memory were communicated within early medieval Ireland. Previous scholarship has emphasized the theological coherence of these monuments, often assuming a single idealized viewer. This study reconsiders Irish high crosses through the concept of multiple viewership by examining how different audiences may have encountered and understood these monuments. Using comparative visual and contextual analysis, this study examines four case studies: the Cross of the Scriptures at Clonmacnoise, Muiredach’s Cross at Monasterboice, the High Cross of Durrow, and the Market Cross at Kells. This …

The Significance Of Abstract Art In Self-Expression: A Study Developed By Analyzing Kandinsky's Black Lines And Producing Visual Juxtapositions, Keturah K. Bowles Jul 2026

The Significance Of Abstract Art In Self-Expression: A Study Developed By Analyzing Kandinsky's Black Lines And Producing Visual Juxtapositions, Keturah K. Bowles

Theses

This paper will contemplate how the creation of abstract art, a creative style born from the Avant-Garde movement of the 20th century by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, was imperative in the pursuit of artistic freedom. Additionally, it will seek to prove that abstraction is one of the unparalleled genres to utilize for self-expression in comparison to genres that uphold traditional art techniques, such as realism. This theory is further emphasized when considering abstract art in juxtaposition to the art standards maintained by the academy. Moreover, the research conducted to support the proposed theory falls into various categories, such as …

Seeing Power: Authority, Gender, And Spectatorship In Charles I And Henrietta Marie With Their Two Eldest Children, Prince Charles And Princess Mary (1632), Danielle Scaramuzzi Jul 2026

Seeing Power: Authority, Gender, And Spectatorship In Charles I And Henrietta Marie With Their Two Eldest Children, Prince Charles And Princess Mary (1632), Danielle Scaramuzzi

Theses

The visual construction, enactment, and legitimization of political authority is the subject of this thesis concerning Charles I and Henrietta Maria with their two eldest children, Prince Charles and Princess Mary (1632), painted by Anthony Van Dyck. Through examination of sovereign representation, gendered body, dynastic continuity, and spectators, this research argues that authority within Northern Baroque portraiture is not established as a single or unchanging entity. However, instead of a monolithic representation of authority, it arises from relational elements, including body language, gesture, space, family relations, and viewer engagement. Although Van Dyck's portrait is generally considered a dynastic image in …

Identity Development For Queer East Asian Americans During The Coming Out Process To Family, Mei E. Tam Jul 2026

Identity Development For Queer East Asian Americans During The Coming Out Process To Family, Mei E. Tam

Doctoral Dissertations

There has been a growing number of Asian Americans who openly identify as queer, with over half a million residing in the United States (UCLA, 2021). Despite this, psychological research has paid limited attention to how queer and Asian American identities intersect and are integrated, often framing them as conflicting while overlooking culturally embedded meaning-making processes. The present study explored identity formation among cisgender queer East Asian Americans during the critical period of coming out to family, focusing on how their understanding of and relationship to their queer and ethnic identities shifted following disclosure.

Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews …

Mitigating Negative Consequences Of New Urban Growth In Disadvantaged Communities, Shishir Mathur, Christopher E. Ferrell, Cindy Adrian

Mineta Transportation Institute

New housing and development in California are often planned in communities that already face economic hardship, environmental burdens, and limited access to reliable transportation. Recent research finds specifically that in the San Francisco (S.F.) Bay Area and Southern California (SoCal) metropolitan regions, there is a high propensity to plan new urban development in socially, economically, and environmentally disadvantaged communities (DACs) with poor transit accessibility and limited personal mobility. This project first reviews the literature to identify potential unintended negative impacts of high concentrations of new urban growth in DACs across social, economic, educational, environmental, and transportation dimensions. It then identifies …

Fraud And Focus: Examining Self-Control Strategies In Students Experiencing Impostor Phenomenon, Francesca Angela Catalano Jul 2026

Fraud And Focus: Examining Self-Control Strategies In Students Experiencing Impostor Phenomenon, Francesca Angela Catalano

Theses and Dissertations

Impostor phenomenon (IP) is a common experience among individuals in achievement contexts characterized largely by feelings of self-doubt, attributions of success that focus on external factors, and beliefs that one is “fooling” others about their competence. Current research suggests the effects of IP are complex (e.g., IP is associated with higher grade point average and productivity but also self-handicapping, psychological distress, and difficulties adjusting to college). To better understand these complex effects, this study proposes a self-control perspective for IP, where this phenomenon is seen as involving additional self-control burdens. Specifically, the study examines whether IP is associated with grade …

On The True Interstellar Anisotropy Of Tev Cosmic Rays And Its Implications For The Local Interstellar Medium, Noufel D. Maalal Jul 2026

On The True Interstellar Anisotropy Of Tev Cosmic Rays And Its Implications For The Local Interstellar Medium, Noufel D. Maalal

Theses and Dissertations

Several ground-based cosmic ray (CR) air shower experiments have produced sky maps of intensity anisotropy in the energy range from 1 TeV to a few hundred TeVs with very high statistics and angular resolution. These measurements provide opportunities to study CR sources and propagation in the interstellar medium (ISM). Such studies present two major difficulties. Firstly, CRs are deflected by the heliospheric magnetic field on the last stretch of their journey to Earth. Secondly, measurements at different latitudes are difficult to compare, leading to uncertainties in latitudinal variations on the order of the observed anisotropy. Experiments usually assume latitudinal variations …

Physical inactivity constitutes a pressing societal problem. To realize physical activity’s (PA) potential as a key health resource, mechanisms of PA engagement need to be understood. Laboratory and interventional studies documented that exercise relates to affective well-being (AWB) and suggested that AWB may shape PA behaviour. Digitalization enabled the investigation of how PA relates to AWB in everyday life, but findings from individual studies are ambiguous. Here we compiled 67 datasets (55.2% of eligible records) including 321,345 smartphone-based AWB ratings and nearly 1,000,000 h of accelerometer-measured PA (N = 8,223 participants) until December 2023 to clarify the nature and extent …

“I Was Nobody In The Us”: A Phenomenological Examination Of Indian Women On H-4-Dependent Visas Navigating Higher Education In The United States, Tanu Priya

Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of Indian women on H-4-dependent visas as they navigated higher education in the United States. Framed by intersectionality (Collins, 2000; Crenshaw, 1989, 1991) and guided by van Manen’s (1990) hermeneutic phenomenology, this study employed semi-structured interviews to explore the experiences of Indian women on H-4-dependent visas (n=5). Using in-depth interviews and reflexive memo writing as methods of data collection, analysis uncovered four themes which captured how participants navigated higher education, identity, and well-being under conditions of legal dependency: “The Weight of Legal Dependency,” which captured participants’ experiences of …

Evaluating Relationships Between Immunometabolism And Excess Adiposity Using Anthropometric And Body Composition Measurements, Corina Grimaldo Jul 2026

Evaluating Relationships Between Immunometabolism And Excess Adiposity Using Anthropometric And Body Composition Measurements, Corina Grimaldo

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Metabolic dysfunction is a key contributor to the development of chronic disease and is associated with excessive adiposity. Though body mass index (BMI) is a common screening tool used to identify possible metabolic dysfunction, it does not consider fat distribution. Other tools are needed to assess body composition and determine fat distribution. In recent studies, it has been suggested that alterations in metabolic processes may occur prior to a clinical diagnosis, and the combination of body composition and blood-based markers can help identify those early changes. The overall objective of this study is to identify low-cost indicators of metabolic dysregulation …

Evaluating Variety- And Market-Class-Specific Effects Of Dietary Pulses On Human Health, Jiayu Tang Jul 2026

Evaluating Variety- And Market-Class-Specific Effects Of Dietary Pulses On Human Health, Jiayu Tang

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

While pulses are globally recognized for their high levels of dietary fibers, protein, and polyphenols, research often focuses on characterizing the physiological effects of a single variety. This approach overlooks the substantial genetic and compositional diversity that exists across pulse varieties and individual market classes, which can differ extensively in nutrient content and structure. These compositional differences have the potential to produce distinct physiological and microbial responses in humans, yet variety- and market-class-specific effects remain poorly characterized.

This thesis uses two complementary research methodologies to investigate the health-relevant effects of different pulse varieties and market classes, providing foundational knowledge to …

Communication And Prosocialization: Understanding The Development Of Inclusive Morality, Hannah Smith Jul 2026

Communication And Prosocialization: Understanding The Development Of Inclusive Morality, Hannah Smith

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Relationships between individuals from different social or cultural groups are often impacted by ingroup favoritism, outgroup bias, and structural inequity determined by a person's social and cultural identities. Recognizing this, scholars and practitioners for the last few decades have attempted to address this by creating interventions, workshops, and other applied programs that aim to reduce this intergroup bias and ameliorate the negative consequences. The current dissertation complements this body of applied scholarship by shifting the focus from reducing and minimizing bias to focusing on processes that lead to a more prosocial and inclusive worldview.

The overall aim is to understand …

Classification Of Aircraft Checklist Usability Problems Using Natural Language Processing, Borvorn Kasemtanakul Jul 2026

Classification Of Aircraft Checklist Usability Problems Using Natural Language Processing, Borvorn Kasemtanakul

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The use of checklists has been identified as a recurring issue in aviation accident investigations, highlighting the need for continued improvement in aircraft checklist design. However, existing aviation safety taxonomies do not systematically address checklist usability problems. Therefore, a systematic classification of these problems is needed to support the extension of existing aviation safety taxonomies and to facilitate safety data analysis for checklist design improvements. Furthermore, applications of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques in aircraft checklist research remain underexplored, despite their potential to identify meaningful patterns in textual safety data.

This exploratory research aimed to develop a data-driven classification of …

A Machine-Learning-Based Systematic Framework For Modeling Compression And Recompression Indices For Florida Soils, Michael Morales Jul 2026

A Machine-Learning-Based Systematic Framework For Modeling Compression And Recompression Indices For Florida Soils, Michael Morales

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This thesis develops a machine-learning framework for estimating the compression index and the recompression index of Florida soils from routinely measured index properties, and reports two studies that build it. Consolidation settlement design requires both indices, and both are obtained from the incremental-loading oedometer test, which occupies a specimen for one to two weeks; the index tests that accompany it are complete within hours. Empirical correlations have filled that interval since the 1950s, but their coefficients are calibrated on specific soil populations and transfer poorly between regions. The first study analyzes 376 consolidation tests compiled for the Florida Department of …

Community noise is a primary barrier to the public acceptance and deployment of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) air taxi operations. This dissertation develops a coupled siting, routing, and noise optimization framework that links vertiport placement to its downstream acoustic consequences, demonstrated through a Daytona Beach case study. Candidate vertiports are screened and selected using accessibility, safety, demand, and feasibility criteria, and the selected sites form a directed network of 20 routes. Each trajectory is evaluated with a physics-based acoustic pipeline reporting Lmax, SEL, and EPNL at school, hospital, and residential receptors, showing that received exposure …

Multi-Parametric Nonlinear Programming For Lossy Lmp Sensitivity Analysis Using Outer Progressive Cuts, Yuhan Huang, Tao Ding, Chenggang Mu, Rui Bo, Pengwei Du Jul 2026

Multi-Parametric Nonlinear Programming For Lossy Lmp Sensitivity Analysis Using Outer Progressive Cuts, Yuhan Huang, Tao Ding, Chenggang Mu, Rui Bo, Pengwei Du

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Accurate sensitivity analysis of locational marginal price (LMP) is crucial for risk hedging and market management. This paper proposes multiparametric nonlinear programming for sensitivity analysis of LMP with nonlinear network loss, also known as lossy LMP. Global analytical solutions for lossy LMP and the corresponding critical regions are derived. An outer progressive cut algorithm is developed to constrain the network loss error within a specific range for the whole parametric domain. Case studies show the improved accuracy over methods with lossless or fixed loss factors, and a two-order-of-magnitude online speedup over Monte Carlo methods while maintaining lower total computational time.
