[Introduction] Program and institutional coordinators in graduate medical education (GME) have very complex jobs that are often highly pressured and demanding, requiring a diverse skill set to manage effectively. While these positions can be immensely gratifying, the demands and pressures inherent in the roles pose threats to job satisfaction as well as risks to mental health and well-being. A national survey of 6372 coordinators found that 20.4% reported being dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with work, and 27.9% reported being likely or very likely to leave their job in the next year. ¹ Of the coordinators surveyed 36.3% screened positive for …

Igf-1 As A Biomarker For Symptom Severity In Adult Traumatic Brain Injury: Evidence From An Observational Study, Justin Weppner, Kimberly Rosenthal, Jennifer Bath, Tonja Locklear, Melissa Martinez Jan 2025

Igf-1 As A Biomarker For Symptom Severity In Adult Traumatic Brain Injury: Evidence From An Observational Study, Justin Weppner, Kimberly Rosenthal, Jennifer Bath, Tonja Locklear, Melissa Martinez

Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Faculty Publications

Traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related growth hormone deficiency is often undertreated, despite documented physical, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric effects. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), with neuroreceptors located in brain regions responsible for learning, memory, and mood, regulates cerebral blood flow, neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity. The aim of this study was to determine associations between IGF-1 levels and post-TBI symptom severity, anxiety, and depression. This retrospective observational study at an Academic Brain Injury Center included participants evaluated 3-12 months post-TBI with available IGF-1 values and complete Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ-13), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) responses. Patients under 18 or …

Ex Vivo Single-Molecule Analysis Of Ryanodine Receptor 2 Assembly In Cardiac And Neuronal Tissue, Qianye Yin, Christopher I. Richards Jan 2025

Ex Vivo Single-Molecule Analysis Of Ryanodine Receptor 2 Assembly In Cardiac And Neuronal Tissue, Qianye Yin, Christopher I. Richards

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Understanding receptor assembly is critical for elucidating the mechanisms underlying their function and regulation in physiological processes. While traditional in vitro single-molecule studies rely on isolating proteins from heterologous expression systems, they often fail to capture the in vivo physiological complexity involved in the organization and assembly of cell surface proteins. This protocol employs Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy (TIRFM) to study GFP-tagged Ryanodine Receptor 2 (RyR2) molecules encapsulated within nanoscale vesicles. These vesicles, generated from organs rapidly extracted from the animal, effectively provide a snapshot of the receptor's assembly state at the time of extraction, enabling detailed analysis of …

Positive Youth Development For Youth Living In Structurally Diverse Families, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer Jan 2025

Positive Youth Development For Youth Living In Structurally Diverse Families, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer

Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences

Research on family structure diversity and youth well-being has largely aligned with deficit orientations, emphasizing that living in structurally diverse families is a potential risk-factor for youth well-being and development. In this article, I advocate for increased strengths-based scholarship on youth living in structurally diverse families by centering this research with positive youth development (PYD) frameworks. Broadly, PYD frameworks orient scholars toward viewing youth holistically, attending to positive indicators of well-being as well as how youth capacities and experiences intersect with family and community resources to promote flourishing and thriving. Approaching family structure diversity and youth well-being from a PYD …

Regulatory Personhood: The Elixir For Redundancy Between The Sec And The Pcaob, Sarah Williams Jan 2025

Regulatory Personhood: The Elixir For Redundancy Between The Sec And The Pcaob, Sarah Williams

Faculty Scholarly Works

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (“PCAOB” or “Board”) is a quasi-governmental regulatory agency created by Congress in 2002 in response to revelations of widespread financial fraud at major public companies. Since its creation, the agency has experienced significant challenges. Litigants have challenged its constitutionality, the Trump administration challenged its very existence, and legislation was introduced in 2021 to transfer its responsibilities to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”).

Proposals to eradicate the Board asserted vague concerns about the redundancy of its responsibilities with those of the SEC, and alleged resultant monetary waste. This Article, written in 2022, provides …

Why Academic Law Librarians Quit: Results Of The Law Librarian Exit Survey, Laura J. Ax-Fultz Jan 2025

Why Academic Law Librarians Quit: Results Of The Law Librarian Exit Survey, Laura J. Ax-Fultz

Faculty Scholarly Works

The pandemic exposed the struggles of workers everywhere. The complexity of handling family, work, illness, and a host of other issues led many to reconsider their employment. The phrase “The Great Resignation” summed up the zeitgeist of the early pandemic. Concurrently, open positions for academic law librarians were increasing. I sought to unravel the apparent surge in open positions by surveying academic law librarians to discover why they resigned from their positions or considered leaving them during the period of January 2020 through June 2023.

These findings were evaluated within the context of a high volume of job postings in …

Polycaprolactone—Based Block Copolymers For Nanopatterning Oxide Materials Via Sequential Infiltration Synthesis, Sudarshana Patra, Carter Herbert, Lane Nichols, Prachi Sarwara, Uttam Manna, Mahua Biswas

Faculty publications – Physics

Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) has emerged as a powerful technique to integrate inorganic materials into polymeric templates for fabricating functional hybrid and inorganic-only nanostructures. While several polymers, including self-assembled block copolymers (BCPs), have been widely used as templates for inorganic and hybrid oxide nanostructures, biocompatible polymers such as polycaprolactone (PCL) have not been explored for nanopatterning. In this work, we investigate SIS in polystyrene-block-polycaprolactone (PS-b-PCL) BCPs to demonstrate the feasibility of PCL as a guiding polymer for selective infiltration of Al2O3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the strong interaction of TMA–H2O precursors with …

Born Of A Nightmare: The Aesthetics And Gameplay Of Lucah, Marigold Parson Jan 2025

Born Of A Nightmare: The Aesthetics And Gameplay Of Lucah, Marigold Parson

Student Work

Lucah: Born of a Dream creates a queer narrative of trauma, repression, and self-creation not only through story or representation, but through its aesthetic and gameplay. By fusing a scratchy, childish visual style with ritualized, intimate combat, and religious and dreamlike symbolism, the game creates what queer scholars describe as “queer resistance”(Ruberg and Phillips 2018). This is experienced through the player as much as the character. Drawing on frameworks from queer game studies, including Pozo’s discussion of haptic and bodily game aesthetics (Pozo 2018) and Dalby’s account of queer orientations in play (Dalby 2024), as well as takeaways from Codex …

Old Tech, New Tricks: Political Advertising In Spanish Language Radio. The Role Of Interest Groups During The 2022 Midterm Election In The Us, Christopher Terry, Fernando Severino

Faculty Publications - Communications

This study analyzes political ads aired on Spanish-language radio stations in the US during the midterm elections of 2022. With a focus on media policy, this research offers new evidence about the role of political groups in using this medium to engage and mobilize the Latino vote. Our findings indicate that, although radio is a relatively affordable platform for political advertising, it is still underutilized by politicians and interest groups. The evidence shows that traditional Democratic-leaning organizations and also right-wing conservative groups invested millions of dollars to capture the attention of the diverse eligible Latino voters. Additionally, this study finds …

Cultural Cognition And The Thoughtful Judge, Jack H.L. Whiteley Jan 2025

Cultural Cognition And The Thoughtful Judge, Jack H.L. Whiteley

Articles

That judges follow what the law is, and not what they wish it was, is a requirement of the rule of law. At the same time, scholars, lawyers, and judges often say that judges’ values influence their decisions. Connecting these two ideas has generated a conversation about the relationship between law, ideology, and politics.

Recently, part of this conversation has focused on a theory called cultural cognition. The theory offers an account of how people’s values shape how they interpret things without their noticing. People whose values tend toward hierarchy sometimes perceive facts differently than people whose values tend toward …

Public Perceptions Of Neurotechnologies Used To Target Mood, Memory, And Motor Symptoms, Rémy A. Furrer, Amanda R. Merner, Ian Stevens, Peter Zuk, Theresa Williamson, Francis X. Shen, Gabriel Lázaro-Muñoz Jan 2025

Public Perceptions Of Neurotechnologies Used To Target Mood, Memory, And Motor Symptoms, Rémy A. Furrer, Amanda R. Merner, Ian Stevens, Peter Zuk, Theresa Williamson, Francis X. Shen, Gabriel Lázaro-Muñoz

Articles

Public attitudes toward four neurotechnologies for treating three types of brain disorders (mood, motor, and memory) vary on a range of metrics, such as perceived risk, invasiveness, and likelihood of use. In a survey of 1,052 US participants, deep brain stimulation (DBS) was seen as the most invasive and risky among the surveyed methods, involving the greatest perceived change to the person and the least likely to be used personally. Non-surgical options like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and pills were viewed as more acceptable. Devices targeting motor symptoms were rated as more beneficial and acceptable than those for mood or …

The results indicated most speech-language pathologists have heard of person-centered care, understand the importance of involving clients in goal setting, ask clients about their preferences when setting goals, …

True Law As Genre: Narrative Nonfiction And The Law, Jorge L. Contreras Jan 2025

True Law As Genre: Narrative Nonfiction And The Law, Jorge L. Contreras

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

The Genome Defense, which offers a book-length narrative nonfiction account of the civil litigation that led to the elimination of patents on human genes in the United States, is a member of a distinct literary subgenre that I term True Law. Like the older and better-known True Crime genre, True Law narratives blend the conventions of journalism and novelistic writing to describe complex legal disputes in a manner that is engaging and accessible to the general public. True Law accounts, which have increased in number and popularity since the publication of Jonathan Harr’s A Civil Action in 1995, serve …

Economic Miracles And Their Hypes: An Africanist Disputation, Abou B. Bamba Jan 2025

Economic Miracles And Their Hypes: An Africanist Disputation, Abou B. Bamba

History Faculty Publications

This essay argues that economic miracles are the result of particular processes and procedures to establish a regime of truth. Taking the example of Ivory Coast from the 1950s through the early 1980s as core evidence, the author shows the role of public relations in creating a particular perception of economic achievements. Using the emergence of both West Germany and Japan as early examples in the wake of postwar reconstruction, it is further underlined that the larger context of the Cold War facilitated the construction of economic miracles.

Protecting Older Adults Who Are Incarcerated: Does The 8th Amendment Work?, Jalayne J. Arias Jan 2025

Protecting Older Adults Who Are Incarcerated: Does The 8th Amendment Work?, Jalayne J. Arias

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

Older adults in prison and within other carceral systems (i.e. jails, parole) are uniquely at risk for elder mistreatment. Emerging research has begun to consider the experiences of older adults within carceral settings, including aging in prison, chronic conditions and medical care, compassionate release, and end-of-life care. This research exposes evidence that prisons and other carceral settings lack resources and services for older adults. Given increased vulnerability and a lack of protective resources, older adults experiencing incarceration may experience disproportional rates and consequences of elder mistreatment. A public health approach to develop tools and resources that would prevent, detect, and …

Decision-Making Supports And Cognitive Decline, Rebekah Diller Jan 2025

Decision-Making Supports And Cognitive Decline, Rebekah Diller

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

For persons with a range of cognitive disabilities, supported decision-making, rooted in a human rights approach to disability, has emerged as a tool that permits them to make legally binding decisions and avoid guardianship. As supported decision-making policy has evolved in the United States, state statutes have primarily focused on formal agreements through which individuals can designate trusted supporters to assist in obtaining information, processing that information, and communicating a decision. This Article argues that supported decision-making has promise for preserving the autonomy of persons living with dementia, but that the model of a supported decisionmaking agreement embodied in the …

Planning For Cognitive Decline: Combining Formal Supported Decision-Making Agreements And Healthcare Power Of Attorney, Megan S. Wright Jan 2025

Planning For Cognitive Decline: Combining Formal Supported Decision-Making Agreements And Healthcare Power Of Attorney, Megan S. Wright

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

Patients who have impaired decision-making abilities may not be permitted to make contemporaneous medical decisions. Instead, a substitute decision maker, including a healthcare agent, may be asked to decide on the patient’s behalf even if the patient wants to participate in the medical decision making. Being marginalized in decisions made about their medical care may lead to a decline in wellbeing for these patients. But supported decision making, wherein a person with cognitive impairments receives decision-making assistance, may facilitate such patients making contemporaneous medical decisions. As supported decision-making legislation spreads throughout the United States, there are questions about how this …

Body Size Distributions Of Riverine Freshwater Plankton Communities, Staci Ann Reynolds Jan 2025

Body Size Distributions Of Riverine Freshwater Plankton Communities, Staci Ann Reynolds

Dissertations and Theses

The individual size distribution (ISD) is an individual based model that estimates the relative abundance of individual body sizes in a community. ISD’s slope or lambda (λ) gives insight into the communities’ food web and energy transfer. Climate change is expected to shift mean body sizes and λ as it increases individuals’ energy demands. Alterations in food webs and spatial distribution throughout the middle Missouri River basin may also have an impact on these communities λ. In a mesocosm experiment and field study, planktonic communities were sampled and had body sizes measured. Generalized linear mixed models were fit to calculate …
