Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Past research has identified that internalized racism affects Asian Americans’ dating preferences; however, fewer studies have sought to examine Asian Americans who choose to date one another. For queer Asian American men, dating fellow Asian American men may represent a rejection of idealizing White men in romantic relational contexts. The present study thus utilized a grounded theory qualitative methodology with a strengths-based approach to understand the lived experiences of queer Asian American men who are currently in romantic relationships with fellow queer Asian American men. Queer Asian American men who are in romantic relationships with other queer Asian American men …

Masculine Norms And Their Associations With Social Anxiety And Body Appreciation Among College Men In The United States, Xiaoyin Liu, Thomas P. Le, M.V. Pease
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Previous research has identified the link between conformity to masculine norms and negative mental health outcomes. The present study thus examined how conformity to eight distinct masculine norms is associated with social anxiety and body appreciation among a sample of 271 college men living in the United States. College men living in the United States filled out an online questionnaire that assessed the variables of interest. Our main study variables—Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory, Social Phobia Inventory, and Body Appreciation Scale-2—were analyzed cross-sectionally using linear hierarchical regression models via SPSS. Regression analyses showed that self-reliance was positively associated with social …

An Organizational Theory Of Corporate Law, Emilie Aguirre, Julie Yen, Julie Battilana
An Organizational Theory Of Corporate Law, Emilie Aguirre, Julie Yen, Julie Battilana
Faculty Scholarship
Corporate law is in a moment of vibrant and contentious discussions about potential reforms. As firms exit Delaware, passive investment predominates, private equity expands, and public markets decline, corporate law faces a growing set of challenges that threaten its stability and efficacy. At the same time, the world faces pressing crises, including climate change, social and economic inequalities, and threats to democracy, though corporate law scholars typically consider these crises to be outside corporate law’s remit.
In this Article, we argue that to understand and address the multidimensional crises that face both corporate law and society, we must address shortcomings …

Energetic And Economic Aspects Of Rebound, Part I: Foundations Of A Rigorous Analytical Framework, Matthew Kuperus Heun, Gregor Semieniuk, Paul E. Brockway
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Widespread implementation of energy efficiency is a key greenhouse gas emissions mitigation measure, but rebound can ‘‘take back’’ energy savings. However, the absence of solid analytical foundations hinders empirical determination of the size of rebound. A new clarity is needed, one that involves both economics and energy analysis. In this paper (Part I), we advance foundations of a rigorous analytical framework for consumer-sided rebound that starts at the microeconomic level and is approachable for both energy analysts and economists. We develop foundations of a framework that (i) clarifies the energy, expenditure, and consumption aspects of rebound, (ii) combines embodied energy …
Theories Of Child Development & Theories Of Religious And Spiritual Development (Rsd) In Children, Marjorie Lindner Gunnoe
Theories Of Child Development & Theories Of Religious And Spiritual Development (Rsd) In Children, Marjorie Lindner Gunnoe
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This essay introduces readers to the foundational theories of child development and the ways in which these theories have been applied or extended to children’s religious and spiritual development (RSD). By “foundational theories,” I mean the theories introduced in the opening chapters of developmental textbooks. This essay is not a theological critique of psychological theories (for this, see Gunnoe, 2022), nor a “state of the field” review of RSD (for this, see Boyatzis, 2023). Rather, it is a primer on the broad theoretical approaches that scaffold contemporary research on RSD.

45 Is The New 50: Evaluating Colorectal Cancer Screening Practices In Primary Care, Shemille Flinta, Madison Long, Brittany Wiggins
MSN Research Projects
Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for adults in the United States. There have been significant advances in preventative medicine for CRC, but screening completion lags behind other cancers, with only 61% reported adherence based on USPSTF guidelines. About two-thirds of the patients who are diagnosed with CRC already have distally spread disease. Detecting CRC early is vital, as early detection is linked to smaller tumor sizes and better outcomes. The current research study asked three questions with the objectives of assessing the frequency of CRC screening in primary care clinics, evaluating documented barriers to …

Anxiety In College Students: The Impact Of An Educational Prevention Program, Jessica K. Pippin
DNP Projects
Anxiety affects millions of people in the United States. There is an increase in the numbers of college aged and young people with symptoms of anxiety. The signs and symptoms of anxiety can manifest itself in many ways. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) project was to determine if college aged students were aware of the symptoms, causes, and coping mechanisms related to anxiety. Online and in person educational sessions were offered on the campus of Mississippi University for Women (MUW). The participants participated in a pretest before the educational material was offered. The posttest was used …
Improving Social Determinants Of Health Screening Rates Among Healthcare Providers, Sarabeth Lee Clark
Improving Social Determinants Of Health Screening Rates Among Healthcare Providers, Sarabeth Lee Clark
DNP Projects
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are non-medical factors that influence a patient's health outcomes. The WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health has stated that improving SDOH is one of the most effective means of enhancing the well-being of all individuals and reducing disparities (Chelak et al., 2023). Implementing increased screening measures to identify deficits can positively impact patient outcomes by providing crucial resources that address patients' needs. This approach can significantly enhance the quality of healthcare services (Wark et al., 2021). The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project was to evaluate self-reported screening rates for …

Why They Stay Or Go: The Impact Of Job Satisfaction On Nurse Practitioners’ Intent To Leave, Ebony Harris, Mercades Hill-Dooley, Trisha Potter, Chelsea Shirley, Doni Ulmer
MSN Research Projects
The healthcare system continually faces challenges due to an aging population, increased chronic disease diagnoses, and expanding provider shortages, particularly in states like Mississippi. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are critical in addressing provider gaps; however, high turnover rates are threatening workforce stability and quality of care. This research study aimed to explore the relationship between job satisfaction and the intent to leave a job among Mississippi NPs. Guided by Herzberg’s two-factor theory and Benner’s novice to expert theory, we conducted a descriptive, quantitative study with convenience sampling utilizing the validated Misener Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction Scale (MNPJSS). A total of sixty-two …

Silent Epidemic: Exploring Syphilis Knowledge Gaps Among Mississippi College Students, Birva Bhatt, Jessica Followell, Marly Kate Foster, Whitney Harris, Kimberlee Smith
MSN Research Projects
Syphilis disease has recently re-emerged and can result in serious, life-altering consequences, making it a significant public health concern. Untreated syphilis can have devastating effects, including brain damage, blindness, and paralysis. Congenital cases can cause miscarriage and infant death (Winny, 2024). The U.S. had its lowest rates of syphilis in 1999, potentially due to the efforts against the HIV epidemic. However, in the last two decades, syphilis transmission has been on the rise. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there was an 80% increase in reported syphilis between 2018 and 2022 (Centers for Disease Control and …
The Savings Mirage, Sara Sternberg Greene
The Savings Mirage, Sara Sternberg Greene
Faculty Scholarship
In the past, we did not worry much about elderly poverty because retirement was short for most Americans – a brief jaunt of post-work life was soon met with death. But with the 100-year life becoming a reality for more Americans, an elderly poverty crisis looms. The American dream of abundant retirement savings remains elusive for many, particularly low-wage workers. While government initiatives emphasize individual responsibility and financial education as a way toward retirement success, the reality is that governmental policies are barriers, including asset limitations that prevent those who receive public benefits from saving. This chapter urges reform in …
Poor In Practical Capacity: How Environmental Alienation Is Really A Deficit Of Political Know-How, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Poor In Practical Capacity: How Environmental Alienation Is Really A Deficit Of Political Know-How, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Faculty Scholarship
“Alienation from nature” is a popular notion in Western environmental culture. Influential Anglophone critical theorist Steven Vogel claims that it makes no sense, unlike alienation from our productive capacity to dwell on Earth, called “alienation from the environment.” His criticism is accurate, but his view isn’t. The normative sets appropriate production and consists of social processes of arriving at norms. Politics is foremost among these processes, and it is fundamentally know-how. Given these assumptions, poor practical capacity ends up being the heart of “environmental alienation” – alienation from the built environment. Look at large-scale, anthropogenic, environmental change: a deficit of …

Frances E. W. Harper, “We Are All Bound Up Together” (10 May 1866), Garth Pauley
Frances E. W. Harper, “We Are All Bound Up Together” (10 May 1866), Garth Pauley
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Frances Harper’s address at the 1866 National Woman’s Rights Convention was a visionary speech on civil rights, citizenship, and civic identity. In it, Harper skillfully negotiated the context of nineteenth-century reform politics while remaining true to her vision. The message of her speech was grounded in both her experience as a Black woman and her theological convictions. A close reading of the speech shows that key elements—including its signature line—have been misunderstood and unappreciated.
