Associations Between Psychoeducation And Measures Of Treatment Engagement In Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Shari Lieblich
Associations Between Psychoeducation And Measures Of Treatment Engagement In Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Shari Lieblich
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the efficacy of TF-CBT, its effectiveness is compromised by high premature dropout or attrition rates. Psychoeducation, the first component of TF-CBT, provides both a rationale for engagement in treatment and normalizes symptoms to instill hope in youth and their caregivers. This component has been minimally examined as a predictor of later-phase symptom outcomes, mostly in adult trauma treatments, with mixed results. The goal of the current study is examine the influence of psychoeducation on participation-related variables in TF-CBT. Results indicate a positive association between the percentage of sessions of with psychoeducation and attrition and negative association with percentage session …
The Relationship Between Psychotherapist Self-Disclosure And Occupational And Emotional Variables, Kay Nikiforova
The Relationship Between Psychotherapist Self-Disclosure And Occupational And Emotional Variables, Kay Nikiforova
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of therapist self-disclosure practices on patients and the therapeutic relationship has long been debated. The historical trend of viewpoint toward self-disclosure began from predicting a negative, therapy-interfering stance to a growing openness towards the consideration that therapists sharing about themselves in session can have a positive effect on the patient. Evidence exists for both potential patient benefit and harm from therapists engaging in self-disclosure. Still, there is an increasing body of evidence that demonstrates that therapist self-disclosure benefits the therapeutic process, increases patient disclosure, and provides a more positive view of the therapeutic relationship. However, at present, there …

Nutrition Assessment Of Substance Use Population Compared To Control Population, Lalitha Indrani Dasari
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study aims to evaluate and compare the nutritional status of individuals undergoing treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) with a matched control population. Poor nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and malabsorption are common in individuals with SUD, potentially affecting recovery outcomes. This study involves collection of biometric data, demographic information, conducting a structured nutrition survey and performing a one-time blood draw of 35ml to assess key nutritional markers such as lipid panel, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), magnesium, selenium, chromium, zinc, copper and lithium. While the original protocol was designed to recruit approximately 110 participants across …
A High-Order Eulerian–Lagrangian Runge–Kutta Finite Volume (El–Rk–Fv) Method For Scalar Nonlinear Conservation Laws, J. Chen, Joseph Nakao, J.-M. Qiu, Y. Yang
A High-Order Eulerian–Lagrangian Runge–Kutta Finite Volume (El–Rk–Fv) Method For Scalar Nonlinear Conservation Laws, J. Chen, Joseph Nakao, J.-M. Qiu, Y. Yang
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
We present a class of high-order Eulerian–Lagrangian Runge–Kutta finite volume methods that can numerically solve Burgers’ equation with shock formations, which could be extended to general scalar conservation laws. Eulerian–Lagrangian (EL) and semi-Lagrangian (SL) methods have recently seen increased development and have become a staple for allowing large time-stepping sizes. Yet, maintaining relatively large time-stepping sizes post shock formation remains quite challenging. Our proposed scheme integrates the partial differential equation on a space-time region partitioned by linear approximations to the characteristics determined by the Rankine–Hugoniot jump condition. We trace the characteristics forward in time and present a merging procedure for …

Assessing The Impact Of Key Environmental Factors On Caretta Caretta Nesting Patterns In Sarasota County, Matthew Senecal
Assessing The Impact Of Key Environmental Factors On Caretta Caretta Nesting Patterns In Sarasota County, Matthew Senecal
Theses & ETDs
Environmental factors can impact development for oviparous species during incubation. For sea turtles temperature can influence the sex ratio of the hatchlings and can decrease survival. The substrate the eggs are incubated in can differ between nests thus, impacting nests differently. This study examines the impact of sand characteristics, specifically grain size, color, calcium carbonate, change in sand surface temperature, and hydraulic conductivity, on overall nest viability in Sarasota County, Florida. Darker sands, such as those found further to the south, may lead to higher incubation temperatures and faster hatching rates, potentially increasing the proportion of female hatchlings. Laboratory analysis …

Where Do The 4winds Blow?: Developing 4winds Map, A Geocritical Vgi Application, Andy Trinh
Theses & ETDs
Crowdsourced neogeography and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) applications have become popular in the realm of data aggregation, crisis management, and public policy advocacy, but its use for narrative storymapping is only now steadily increasing. New College, which has always had a complicated history, is in a unique period for alumni to share the impact New College has had on their life with other generations of alumni. 4Winds Map provides a storymapping platform to share stories in an archival and accessible manner. Research regarding design practices of data-based VGI applications is readily available, but methodology considerations of community storymapping VGI applications …
Applications Of Marine Optics: Satellite-Derived Bathymetry, Light Attenuation Measurements Via Multi-Spectral Light Sensors, And Colored Dissolved Organic Matter Spectral Analysis, Noah Tyler
Theses & ETDs
This thesis aims to explore three applications of the field of marine optics. First, some marine optical principles are applied to satellite imagery to generate satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) charts for Sarasota Bay, FL. SDB charts were successfully created using satellite images from July and August of 2023. Unique terrain features, such as the intercoastal waterway, can be seen in the SDB charts. Next, a multi-spectral light sensor system (MSLSs) was developed so it could be utilized to measure attenuation as a proxy for turbidity using marine optics concepts. The MSLSs were deployed in Sarasota Bay to collect attenuation data. The …

Patient Autonomy, Public Safety, And Drivers With Cognitive Decline, Sharona Hoffman, Cassandra Burke Robertson
Patient Autonomy, Public Safety, And Drivers With Cognitive Decline, Sharona Hoffman, Cassandra Burke Robertson
Faculty Publications
With a growing elderly population, cognitive decline in drivers has become a significant public safety concern. Currently, over thirty-two million individuals who are seventy or older have driver’s licenses, and that number is growing quickly. In addition, almost ten percent of U.S. seniors (those sixty-five and older) have dementia, and an additional twenty-two percent have mild cognitive impairment. Between a quarter and a half of individuals with mild to moderate dementia still drive. As cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, and decision-making skills deteriorate, a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely can be compromised. This not only puts the …

JCLC Online
The Northwestern Prison Education Program (NPEP) provides currently incarcerated individuals across Illinois an undergraduate education from Northwestern University. At Stateville and Logan Correctional Centers, admitted NPEP students work toward a Bachelor of Science degree, taking a full course load taught by Northwestern professors within the prisons’ walls. On November 14, 2023, the inaugural cohort of NPEP students at Stateville graduated from the program, making history as the first incarcerated students in the United States to earn a bachelor’s degree from a top ten university as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. This piece is a collection of personal reflections …
For Official Violence, The Devil's In The Dehumanizing Details, Rachel Kincaid
For Official Violence, The Devil's In The Dehumanizing Details, Rachel Kincaid
JCLC Online
In Excessive Force in Prison, Professor Sharon Dolovich tackles the shortcomings of the Eighth Amendment’s cruel and unusual punishment doctrine to govern uses of official violence against prisoners. She argues that law enforcement officers owe a duty of care and protection to incarcerated people, but that duty of care and protection is undermined by the dehumanization and demonization of prisoners. Professor Dolovich thus advocates for shifting the doctrinal standard for excessive force under the Eighth Amendment to one based on objective reasonableness, paired with jury instructions explicitly reminding jurors of incarcerated victims’ humanity. To counteract the vagaries of such an …
From Oppenheimer To Trump: An Exploration Of The American History Of Prosecution And Persecution In Classified Information Dissemination, Samuel Bevenour
From Oppenheimer To Trump: An Exploration Of The American History Of Prosecution And Persecution In Classified Information Dissemination, Samuel Bevenour
JCLC Online
Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, was stripped of his security clearance before documents were properly classified and without access to exculpatory evidence in what amounted to a show trial. The modern, peace-time classification system has expanded into an arguably uncontrollable leviathan that has proven unable to be curtailed by either political party despite bipartisan support. The usage of the related Espionage Act to enforce the ever-growing secrecy state has a problematic history of being utilized in politically motivated prosecutions in which defendants still face an uphill battle to gain access to exculpatory information. These prosecutions, under the …
Juvenile Drug Offenses: Rethinking Criminal Justice Approaches And Intervention Strategies, Lucas Kelly
Juvenile Drug Offenses: Rethinking Criminal Justice Approaches And Intervention Strategies, Lucas Kelly
JCLC Online
Juveniles, whose offending nature fundamentally differs from that of adults, should not be subjected to the traditional criminal justice system for drug offenses. Juvenile drug offenders warrant heightened attention due to their diminished capacity for reasoned judgment, increased susceptibility to the effects of drugs, the profound impact that criminal drug charges have on their future, and the possible presence of Substance Use Disorder. This Comment breaks down ways in which the U.S. has handled, and currently handles, juvenile drug offenders. I will also explore the long-term and short-term effects of drug convictions for juveniles, the issue of culpability and susceptibility …
A Practitioner's Response To "Excessive Force In Prison": The Real-World Implications Of Professor Dolovich's Proposed 8th Amendment Standard, Alan Mills
JCLC Online
In Excessive Force in Prison, Professor Sharon Dolovich has proposed a new standard for liability in excessive force cases brought by prisoners against prison officials, shifting the Eighth Amendment analysis from its current deference to correctional officers’ judgment to a “morally robust reasonableness standard.”
While Professor Dolovich’s argument is righteous and compelling, its potential to practically impact prison litigation is lacking. This Article responds to Professor Dolovich’s recent piece from the perspective of a practitioner with decades of experience litigating prisoners’ rights cases in state and federal court. Based on this experience, this Article suggests that Professor Dolovich’s new …
Stopping The Spread Of The World's Oldest Hatred - What U.S. Sports Stakeholders Can Do To Combat Antisemitism, Mark Conrad
Stopping The Spread Of The World's Oldest Hatred - What U.S. Sports Stakeholders Can Do To Combat Antisemitism, Mark Conrad
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
The consistent rise in reported acts of antisemitism in the United States over the last decade has prompted debate about strategies to combat this age-old menace. The Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military response in Gaza has exacerbated this trend. Many have debated ways to confront the issue, including informing the public about the magnitude of the problem and finding policies to reduce incidents of antisemitism. The sports industry could help in this quest. Because millions of people follow professional, college, high school, and Olympic sports, organizations and individual athletes could participate in activities designed …

A History Of Individuation: Aristotle, Jung, Simondon And The Vital Impulse, Sam Gould
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This paper theoretically situates transformation as a biophysiological process specific to information transfer in and throughout a multicellular organism, conceptualized as the epigenesis, morphogenesis, and formation of the self in the unfolding process of individuation. The self will be ascribed, not merely as the Jungian definition of something to be realized through individuation, but rather, as a twofold operation: (a) As a conjunction within the process of individuation that extends into, as part of, the possible future process of individuation; to account for this phase in the operation of the unfolding of the self, the paper refers to Gilbert Simondon’s …

The Nebraska Criminal Law Practitioner's Guide to Representing Non-Citizens in State Court Proceedings
PREFACE TO THE 2025 EDITION
There have been a good deal of developments in this area since the 2023 revision to this Guide. Two are especially notable. The first is the 2024 decision by the United States Supreme Court in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, in which the Court overruled its 1984 decision in Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. Although the contours of Loper Bright are still playing out, it is clear that the level of deference given to agency interpretations of the law under Chevron is no longer appropriate. That obviously has significant implications …

The Influence Of Generative Artificial Intelligence On Leadership: An Exploration Of Technology Professionals' Perceptions Regarding Leadership, Adaptation, And Organizational Culture In The Digital Age, Paul Thomas Herdman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has introduced new complexities for organizational leadership, requiring technology professionals to adapt in real time to evolving digital tools, strategic demands, and cultural dynamics. Although prior research has examined AI’s broad influence on business processes, few studies have explored how technology leaders experience and interpret the leadership challenges and opportunities arising from GenAI. This qualitative dissertation addressed that gap by investigating the perceptions of senior technology professionals regarding GenAI’s influence on leadership roles, competencies, decision making, and organizational culture. Using Lanigan’s (1977) phenomenological method of human science, this study explored the lived experiences …

In the flight training environment, Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) experienceinconsistent schedules, long hours at the airport, and limited organizationalsupport in their roles. These factors can contribute to fatigue and burnout whichcan also impact Flight Students. This study explores such experiences of CFIs andflight students through semi structured focus groups across three collegiate flightschools. Analysis of these focus group transcripts revealed five themes:organizational issues, financial pressures, fatigue, burnout, and trainingeffectiveness. Our findings identified how systemic stressors, like rigidscheduling, financial stress, and lack of career infrastructure, degrade the CFIs’wellbeing which leads to compromised training quality and flight safety. Flightstudents also observed signs …
