Catalogue Of The Water Striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) Of Mississippi, Chase G. Fry, Patricia L.S. Wooden
Midsouth Entomologist
Water striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) are skating aquatic insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts that opportunistically feed on prey trapped by surface tension. The presence or absence of water striders and other aquatic Hemiptera in water systems may be important indicators of water quality. Despite their importance, the last aquatic Hemiptera checklist for the state was published in 1988. Since this publication, humans have altered waterways to meet their needs, and Gerridae taxonomy has continued to evolve. This study aims to create a current checklist of Gerridae, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the species found in Mississippi before aquatic habitats are …
Designing Data Centers For Demand Response Through A Construction-Phase Readiness Index, Arezou Shafaghat, Da Hu, Ali Keyvanfar
Designing Data Centers For Demand Response Through A Construction-Phase Readiness Index, Arezou Shafaghat, Da Hu, Ali Keyvanfar
Faculty Articles
AI-driven growth is pushing data-center electricity demand from 415 TWh (2024) toward 945 TWh by 2030. Demand-response research has matured on operational levers but treats the physical envelope as largely exogenous, leaving construction-phase decisions that bound achievable flexibility unmodeled. This article integrates three previously separate bodies of literature (data-center demand response, grid-interactive efficient buildings, and stochastic optimal control under irreversibility) into a single framework that prices construction-phase flexibility as a portfolio of real options, pairing elicitation-derived (FAHP) weights with simulation-derived (Sobol) variance indices. None of the individual techniques is new; the contribution is their synthesis and the finding that architectural …
The Sacred Garden: An Exploration Of Black Women’S Sexual Pleasure As Healing And Liberatory Practice, Brittany M. Young
The Sacred Garden: An Exploration Of Black Women’S Sexual Pleasure As Healing And Liberatory Practice, Brittany M. Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Much of sexology (i.e., sex science) employs a non-inclusive, sex-negative and anti-Black perspective. Most research about Black sexuality, specifically Black women’s sexuality, is rooted in negativity, promiscuity, shame, and the erasure of pleasure. To undo such a narrow, harmful, and dehumanizing view of Black women’s sexuality, this qualitative study employed an intersectional, pleasure-focused, and sex-positive framework to explore how Endarkened (Black) women’s sexual pleasure is a healing and liberatory practice. This study also delved into Endarkened women’s femininity/feminine expression to understand how Black femininity functions as a form of feminine resistance by not existing within patriarchal femininity. Guided by Lorde’s …

Influence Of Externalizing And Adhd-Related Phenotypes On Emotion Dysregulation In Adults: An Event-Related Potential Study Of Cognitive Preappraisal And Motivated Attention, Logan Michael Brewer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Emotion dysregulation (ED) has become increasingly recognized as an important dimension of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and externalizing pathology. However, little is known regarding the neural processes underlying ED in adults with ADHD. Two event-related potentials (ERPs), the late positive potential (LPP) and probe P3, have been found to capture important facets of motivational attention during the passive viewing of affective images. We aimed to explore the influence of ADHD and externalizing symptomatology--as indexed by self-report and behavioral measures--on the centroparietal LPP, frontocentral LPP, and probe P3 using a preappraisal paradigm. Sixty-eight undergraduate students completed the Externalizing Spectrum Inventory (ESI-100) and …

Education Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome And The Usage Of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1, Kristina Cockerill
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that affects many women starting at puberty and continuing through to menopause. This disorder causes a lot of issues, such as facial hair, obesity, irregular menses, cysts on the ovaries, and insulin resistance. It can also, however, cause other long-term effects like metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular complications, kidney disease, and type II diabetes if not properly treated. The traditional treatment for PCOS is metformin, which helps the body use the insulin that it produces to control symptoms of PCOS. However, most women continue to have symptoms, and they are not aware that glucagon-like …

Construction Trends And Addressing Strategy Of Global Carbon Value System In View Of Chinese Enterprise, Xu Shuangqing, Liang Sun, Jianfeng Guo
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The global carbon value system represents a new consensus on values formed over decades of collective human action to address climate change. Its framework has been preliminarily established, with three dimensions—institutions, norms, and industries—forming a multidimensional space for expansion. Through this framework, the carbon value system can extend its influence to every aspect of human activity. At its core, the carbon value system involves reassessing the value of human activities and establishing new constraints for sustainable development. Consequently, enterprises must transform their traditional development models. For Chinese enterprises, the emergence of the global carbon value system during their pursuit of …

Material Affecting Design (Mad): How Living Biomaterials Reshape Computational Design Through Biological Transformation, Abolhassan Pishahang
Material Affecting Design (Mad): How Living Biomaterials Reshape Computational Design Through Biological Transformation, Abolhassan Pishahang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Living biomaterials grow during fabrication, making strategy selection a design problem distinct from conventional form-making. This dissertation investigates how Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium and Triticum aestivum plant roots reshape the computational design process through their biological behavior. The central argument is that when a designer works with living matter, the material participates in forming, changing the decisions made, the strategies chosen, and the framework required. This relationship between biological transformation and computational design is named the Material Affecting Design (MAD) framework. The research was conducted through a research-through-design methodology grounded in American pragmatist philosophy, particularly the work of Dewey, James, and …

The Journey Is Also The Return, Segio Barce Gallardo
SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism
The aim is to explore a variant of travel theory which, in this case, would be the the journey of return or the return to the beloved country. Even if it is a physical journey, this article tries to investigate and prove that the return journey, especially the one made for the first time after a long absence, is also a sentimental and emotional journey. This article analyses both the author’s own work anda series of books written by other authorswho have experienced the same situation and reflected on those situations in novels and stories. Since the author of the …

The Moorish Ambassador’S Journey To Spain: Cultural Encounters In Ahmed Ben Mehdi Al-Ghazāl’S Natījat Al Ijtihād Fi Al-Mohādana Wa Al-Jihād (1766), Lhoussain Simour
SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism
This article attempts to read al-Ghazāl’s travel account Natījat al Ijtihād fi al-Mohādana wa al-Jihād as a valuable archival material and an eighteenth-century subaltern narrative that offers the re-interrogation of the discourse of the Self and the Other from the perspective of the Moroccan traveler. Natījat al Ijtihād is a travel account that gives further historical evidence about one of the less discussed experiences in literature and annals of history, the abduction of Muslims in foreign lands. Such an interdependent overlap between these thematic concerns and the historical context that fuels up al-Ghazzal’s travel-inspired text would give readers the chance …

Fostering Integration Of Idd Concepts Into Nursing Curriculums In The United States, Cecily L. Betz, Joyce Carolyn Graff
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Curriculum content pertaining to the lifespan needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is not evident in nursing programs in the United States (US) despite national statistics that indicate 17% of the U.S. population are identified as having IDD [1-3]. Beginning with the Kennedy Administration in the 1960s, the U.S. federal government has made significant investments to improve services for the IDD population through the establishment of interdisciplinary educational networks, such as the University Centers for Excellence in Development Disabilities (UCEDD) and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) [2]. For nurses interested in IDD specialty …

Bolster is one of the bogie's components that receives direct loading from the car body and freight movement. One of the problems that occurs in the bolster is permanent deflection during vertical and transversal static loading. Therefore, a static loading test is required to evaluate the structural strength of the bolster. During the static loading test, a rig is required to hold the bolster so that the bolster is in a fixed position. The rig owned by PT. INKA (Persero) showed a plastic deformation at the vertical center plate load (VCP 5.22P). Therefore, a modified design of the rig is …

One-For-All Community Search On Unseen Graphs, Mo Li, Zhaosong Zhao, Linlin Ding, Renata Borovica-Gajic, Zhongming Yao, Jianxin Li
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Community search is a fundamental graph-based retrieval problem that aims to identify a query-dependent subgraph whose nodes exhibit strong internal connectivity. While recent learning-based methods improve retrieval effectiveness via graph representation learning, they follow a ''one-use-one-train'' paradigm that requires retraining or fine-tuning for each target graph, leading to high data dependency, high training costs, and limited generalization. To handle this, we propose OFA-CS, a ''one-for-all'' community search framework trained once on source datasets and directly deployed to arbitrary unseen graphs without retraining or fine-tuning, while preserving strong performance. Specifically, we introduce a Spectral-Aware Feature Alignment module to unify feature dimensionality …

Animal Sentience
Strongly supportive overall of Birch’s broad tent Sentience Project, I offer an alternative dyadic, single-class, two-stage process based on estimating the probability for sentience, and the associated confidence, for any individual or taxonomic group. I criticize Birch’s narrow computational framework when addressing the question of algorithmic sentience; there are alternative approaches.
Can An Ai System Be Creative? A Critical Perspective From Art And Engineering, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau
Can An Ai System Be Creative? A Critical Perspective From Art And Engineering, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau
Presidential Fellows Articles and Research
This paper examines the question of whether artificial intelligence (AI) systems can be creative, approached from the dual perspective of a researcher trained in electrical engineering, pattern recognition, machine learning, and neural networks, who has also spent most of his life engaged in the arts as actor, stage and film director, writer, composer, and visual artist, and in philosophy. Drawing on Margaret Boden’s foundational framework — both her three properties of creativity (novelty, surprise, and value) and her three types of creative processes (combinatorial, exploratory, and transformational) — the paper argues that AI systems are structurally incapable of creativity in …
Visual-Motor Coordination In Automated Driving: Effects Of Temporal Urgency And Motor Demand On Intervention Behavior, Kailin Cui, Jonathan Chiu, Pranav Meda, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo
Visual-Motor Coordination In Automated Driving: Effects Of Temporal Urgency And Motor Demand On Intervention Behavior, Kailin Cui, Jonathan Chiu, Pranav Meda, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Occupational Applications: This study shows that time-critical automation intervention requests increase drivers’ visual-motor demands, reflected in measurable changes in driving performance and posture (i.e., limb engagement and trunk positioning) during transitions of control. These responses indicate that maneuver urgency and takeover timing can place elevated biomechanical and coordination demands on drivers, particularly in work-based automated driving. For ergonomics and human factors practice, the findings underscore the need to design automated transportation systems (e.g., ridesharing services) that align request timing with operators’ physical and perceptual capabilities. In occupational settings such as automated shuttles and fleet-supervised vehicles, intervention requests should provide adequate …
Persistent Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy As A Chronic Cancer Pain Syndrome: Mechanisms, Therapeutic Limitations, And Future Directions, Reed Firestone, Jamin Morrison
Persistent Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy As A Chronic Cancer Pain Syndrome: Mechanisms, Therapeutic Limitations, And Future Directions, Reed Firestone, Jamin Morrison
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Background/Objectives: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common, dose-limiting complication of cancer therapy and a major contributor to chronic neuropathic pain among cancer survivors. Although traditionally managed as a treatment-related toxicity, persistent CIPN frequently persists long after chemotherapy completion and is increasingly recognized as a major survivorship and palliative care challenge. This review synthesizes current mechanistic, clinical, and translational evidence and reframes persistent CIPN as a chronic neuropathic cancer pain syndrome. Methods: A narrative review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, supplemented by manual review of key references and clinical guidelines. Emphasis was placed …
Ai Is Not The Kind Of Thing That Can Ever Be Sentient, Lori Marino
Ai Is Not The Kind Of Thing That Can Ever Be Sentient, Lori Marino
Animal Sentience
Sentience evolved to allow organisms to move through their environment avoiding harms and achieving benefits. Sentience did not evolve from computation. It evolved from valenced feelings. AI (even robots) are not embodied and are not the kind of thing that needs to be sentient. There is no way to get from computations to feelings. They are qualitatively different things. We should avoid being lulled into thinking that an inanimate object designed to engage our propensity for anthropomorphism, like AI, is actually a mind.

Reproduction Beyond Benchmarks: Constbert And Colbert-V2 Across Backends And Query Distributions, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Ashish David, Shubham Chatterjee
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Reproducibility must validate architectural robustness, not just numerical accuracy. We evaluate ColBERT-v2 and ConstBERT across five dimensions, finding that while ConstBERT reproduces within 0.05% MRR@10 on MS-MARCO, both models show a drop of 86-97% on long, narrative queries (TREC ToT 2025). Ablations prove this failure is architectural: performance plateaus at 20 words because the MaxSim operator's uniform token weighting cannot distinguish signal from filler noise. Furthermore, undocumented backend parameters create an 8-point gap due to ConstBERT's sparse centroid coverage, and fine-tuning with 3x more data actually degrades performance by up to 29%. We conclude that architectural constraints in multi-vector retrieval …

ELO (un)supervised 2026
Summer 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of Sunshine '69, recognized as the first novelistic hypertext fiction published on the web. While the full work remains accessible online—an "(un)supervised" preservation achievement in itself—the archive remains split between boxes and memory. This conversation between the work's creator and a major scholar in electronic literature documents both specific preservation challenges and systemic patterns in what the field chooses to preserve.
Topics include: figuring out web-born composition before established methodologies existed; the three decades of technical decisions that kept a 1996 work alive through format obsolescence and server migrations; and what gets lost …

Aesthetic Relationship Of The Female Character Design And Peacocks In Art Nouveau And Art Deco, A.L Rawan Reda Atef Elzeky, Prof. Dr. Manal Abdel Rahim, Prof. Asmaa Abu Bakr El-Nawawy
Journal of Art, Design and Music
The Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements (1890–1940) produced a rich visual vocabulary in which the female figure and the peacock emerged as recurring and symbolically charged motifs. Despite extensive scholarship on both movements, the specific aesthetic and symbolic relationship between these two elements, and their collective contribution to the development of character design principles, has received limited scholarly attention.
The aim is to enhance understanding of the visual diversity presented in the selected works, despite the shared fundamental elements represented by the woman and peacock. The complementary relationship between them, whether it is a spatially intertwined and harmonious relationship …
