Free, Civil Legal Aid: An Examination Of Client Access To Free, Civil Legal Services In Tennessee, Laura E. Brown

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Nonprofit law firms and legal aid societies provide free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals who have a civil, legal need and who qualify for the services. However, the provision of such services is not straightforward nor without challenges and barriers. This research study examined the provision of free, civil legal services to eligible citizens of Tennessee to see if there was a difference in the provision of services depending on if the recipient of services resides in a rural, urban, or suburban area. The study also explored if there was a difference in the number of cases closed and …

Hunger, Famine, And Eating Habits, Robert Dirks Aug 2026

Hunger, Famine, And Eating Habits, Robert Dirks

Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology

This paper explores how hunger and famine affect various eating habits, including commensal relations within households, shared attitudes toward eating with unfamiliar people, and typical ways of expressing appetite. Drawing on data collected from 124 societies worldwide, it provides a comparative perspective on the influence of food insecurity and nutritional stress on common, everyday eating habits. Analysis shows that chronic nutritional deficiencies and historical experiences with famine are associated with less inclusive, less amiable mealtime behaviors. Discussion offers explanations for the occasional persistence of such patterns despite ample food supply and considers the impact of nutrition alongside other factors likely …

Tidally Driven Topographic Eddies Exploited By Manta Feeding Aggregations, Harvey Cairns, Daniel Conley, Christopher Stokes, Tim Scott, Philip Hosegood Aug 2026

Tidally Driven Topographic Eddies Exploited By Manta Feeding Aggregations, Harvey Cairns, Daniel Conley, Christopher Stokes, Tim Scott, Philip Hosegood

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The seasonal feeding aggregations of reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) in Hanifaru Bay, Maldives, are the largest known of their kind, yet the mechanisms facilitating this phenomenon remain poorly understood. Understanding these drivers is crucial for effective conservation and management, as protecting key foraging habitats requires knowledge of the physical processes influencing prey availability. While previous studies highlight the role of zooplankton in attracting manta, the oceanographic mechanisms responsible for concentrating prey within the bay remain hypothesised but unproven. Specifically, the influence of eddy dynamics, tidal forcing, and regional circulation on zooplankton distribution has not been thoroughly examined.A …

Three grey mullets are native to the United Kingdom: Chelon labrosus, Chelon ramada, and Chelon auratus, for which there is an emergent fishery. These species are managed under a broad grey mullet fishery, but aspects of the life-histories of these populations remain undetermined. The fishery has never been formally assessed. For each species, this research i) investigated their life-history, ii) quantified relative fishing pressure, and iii) investigated their relative vulnerability to overfishing. Grey mullets were collected from commercial fisheries along the southern coast of England. Fish were weighed, measured, and ages were assigned by counting scale annuli. Maturity was determined …

Maintaining Empire, Maiya White Aug 2026

Maintaining Empire, Maiya White

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

This thesis portfolio examines the structure and consequences of imperialism, exploring the relationship between empires and their subjects using the cases of the United States of America and Japan. While existing research on empire focuses on territorial expansion, this study proposes a working definition of empire that centers on coercion and manipulation of the domestic population to demonstrate how empires sustain themselves. Additionally, this thesis portfolio demonstrates how governments maintain control by influencing how their citizens should interpret their actions.  Utilizing primary sources, including legal and legislative documents, government reports, diplomatic correspondence, and visual propaganda, this thesis portfolio argues that …

Jison Jiei: Offensive Realism And Imperial Japan's Spiral Toward Regional Hegemony, John William Dodd Aug 2026

Jison Jiei: Offensive Realism And Imperial Japan's Spiral Toward Regional Hegemony, John William Dodd

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

This thesis examines Imperial Japan’s march from the Mukden Incident of 1931 to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 through the lens of offensive realism. It asks to what extent Japan’s prewar grand strategy can be understood as a bid for regional hegemony, and what that interpretation reveals about the relationship between power politics, international law, and future great-power crises. Rather than treating Japanese expansion as irrational madness or reducing it only to ideology or militarism, this thesis argues that Japanese leaders acted according to a recognizable strategic logic.

Proceeding from theory to historical analysis, this project first situates …

Musical Training Increases Anticipatory Responding And Predictive Control In Sequence Learning, Li Ann Leow, Jarrad Lum, Sara Johnson, Emily Corti, Welber Marinovic

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Musicians demonstrate advantages in acquiring motor sequences, showing faster learning and better explicit sequence knowledge than non-musicians. However, it is unclear whether this advantage extends beyond acquisition to the consolidation phase, which is when newly learned skills stabilize and become resistant to interference. Additionally, while interference from executing competing motor tasks is well-established, less is known about whether purely sensory information presented after learning can disrupt consolidation of a bimodal motor sequence. We investigated how post-acquisition sensory interference affects performance of a learned audio-visual sequence, and whether musical training moderates this vulnerability. Participants first learned an explicit sequence in a …

Constitutive Behaviour, Failure Mechanisms, And Life Cycle Assessment Of Internally Cured Fiber-Reinforced High-Strength Concrete, Kastro Kiran V, Dhanya Sathyan, Sanjay Kumar Shukla

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

High-strength concrete (HSC) with low water-to-cement ratios undergoes self-desiccation, resulting in incomplete hydration, capillary porosity, and autogenous shrinkage that can compromise long-term performance. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) functions as an internal curing agent by releasing stored water as internal relative humidity decreases, thereby sustaining hydration within the cement matrix. However, the combined influence of PEG grade, dosage, and fibre type on the constitutive response, fracture behaviour, and environmental performance of M65 HSC remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated twelve concrete mixes incorporating three curing regimes viz. Conventional curing, spray curing, and PEG-based internal curing (IC) using PEG 4000 (1.5%) and PEG …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Conservation translocations require careful assessment of dietary resources to ensure population viability. Here, we used environmental DNA metabarcoding to characterise fungal assemblages across three major habitat types on Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia, prior to the planned reintroduction of two threatened mycophagous species: the boodie (Bettongia lesueur) and woylie (Bettongia ogilbyi). We detected 243 fungal ASVs, of which 75 represented taxa that are likely to produce macroscopic fruiting bodies accessible to mycophagous mammals. Ectomycorrhizal fungi dominated all habitats, with Pezizaceae being the most abundant family—a pattern consistent with known dietary preferences of both species across multiple Australian locations. Fungal community …
