Focus Daily: Jase Special Issue On Hip-Hop, Disability, And The Continuing Evolution Of Arts-Based Pedagogy In Special Education (Side B), Jonte C. Taylor

Journal of the Arts and Special Education

Hip-hop has long served as an educational tradition, emerging from the Bronx as a cultural response to systemic inequities that fostered identity, critical consciousness, creativity, and community through its core elements of emceeing, DJing, breaking, graffiti, and knowledge of self. In this second special hip-hop issue of the Journal of the Arts in Special Education (JASE) and building on the initial 2025 JASE special issue, this collection advances hip-hop pedagogy beyond an engagement strategy by positioning it as a culturally inclusive framework that supports academic achievement, identity affirmation, and meaningful participation for students with disabilities. The contributing scholars explore how …

Developing Flow Theory For Black Girl Genius: A Conceptual Framework Grounded In Discrit, Endarkened Feminist Epistemology, And Hip-Hop Pedagogy, Keishana L. Barnes, William C. Hunter

Journal of the Arts and Special Education

Twice exceptional Black girls, those who are both intellectually gifted and identified with a disability, navigate classrooms shaped by racism, ableism, and sexism. These overlapping systems often render their brilliance illegible, leading to misidentification, exclusion, and under-support in both gifted and special education. This conceptual essay introduces Flow Theory for Black Girl Genius, a liberatory framework that considers Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit), Endarkened Feminist Epistemology, and Hip-Hop Pedagogy. DisCrit helps uncover the structural barriers that marginalize students at the intersection of race and disability. Endarkened Feminist Epistemology centers ancestral, embodied, and spiritual ways of knowing rooted in Black …

Implementing An Intercultural Journal Club For Graduate Nursing Students, Becky Davis, Helen Ewing, Shelly Luger, Augustine Ndaimani

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

In June of 2025, two private universities – one in the Midwestern US and the other in Rwanda, Africa, entered a partnership and began collaborating on a DNP program with emphasis on global health, leadership, and advanced level nursing. While the idea of international academic partnership is not new, in this case, the mutually agreed outcomes were intentional and reciprocal. Both universities have graduate Nursing programs that include a Leadership focus. Even though students are geographically diverse, they are all focused on advancing their professional identity as nurse leaders. As a result, faculty partners launched the intercultural Journal Club (JC) …

Acp Roles, Barriers, And Emotional Labor Of Home Health Nurses In Japan: A Text-Mining Analysis, Yoko Hashimoto, Kumiko Kotake

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Home care in Japan has increased rapidly among older adults and individuals with cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and chronic conditions (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 2021). Within this expanding community-based care system, Advance Care Planning (ACP) is essential for supporting patients’ values and end-of-life preferences (Rietjens et al., 2017). Home health nurses, who observe patients’ daily lives closely, play a central role in ACP (Chan et al., 2020). However, their roles and emotional burdens remain underexplored.

Objective: To clarify the roles, barriers, and emotional experiences of home health nurses in ACP support in Japan and identify implications for educational …

Impact Of Debriefing Methods On Psychological Outcomes In End-Of-Life Simulation, Jennifer A. Wentzel, Julie Steele, Desireé Hensel

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Introduction: Nursing students do not feel adequately prepared to care for patients at the end of life (EOL) (Yoong et al., 2023). Current EOL education focuses on students’ learning outcomes instead of their psychological needs (Harder & Harwood, 2019). This is the first study to compare the impact of debriefing methods on psychological outcomes in EOL nursing education.

Purpose: Guided by the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping and Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory, this study examined the impact of the Trauma-informed, Psychologically Safe (TiPS) debriefing method on coping with death, attitudes toward care of the dying, and debriefing experience in undergraduate …

Supporting My Resilience And Well-Being: Reflections From Pre-Nursing Student, Leslie A. Jennings, Regina W. Urban, Adrianna Vinar

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: In 2022, over 138,000 nurses left the U.S. workforce, primarily due to stress and burnout (Smiley et al., 2025). Because nursing students also experience high levels of burnout (Gómez-Urquiza et al., 2023), efforts to reduce burnout should begin during their training. Psychosocial factors, like stress and resilience, are associated with burnout (Al-Alawi et al., 2020) and affect nursing student retention (Sanderson et al., 2021) but are rarely examined in students preparing for admission to nursing school. Among these students, stress is negatively associated with resilience and persistence (Names Withheld, 2022). Strategies to reduce stress must go beyond academics and …

Online Simulation With Actor And Facilitator To Assist Iens Develop Strategies To Address Incivility, Patricia Ann Bradley, Linda Patrick, Elaine Santa Mina, Kirsten Woodend, Ayesha Bhatti Aug 2026

Online Simulation With Actor And Facilitator To Assist Iens Develop Strategies To Address Incivility, Patricia Ann Bradley, Linda Patrick, Elaine Santa Mina, Kirsten Woodend, Ayesha Bhatti

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Internationally educated nurses (IENs) may face obstacles transitioning into the Canadian healthcare environment due to incivility (Cruz, Quicho & Ibañez, 2022). Workplace incivility describes workplace behaviour that is rude, disruptive, and disrespectful and that promotes discord and disharmony (Clark et al., 2020). Incivility has an impact on nurses’ well-being, patient engagement, and patient outcomes (Jackson, Usher, & Cleary, 2024).

We will share the virtual simulation multi-dimensional design, development, and evaluation outcomes that features actors as simulated participants (SPs) and facilitators for the provincially funded Ontario Internationally Educated Nurses Course Consortium concept and competency-bridging program of study for IENs. The learning …

Sustaining A Sense Of Unknowing Of The Risk For Coronary Artery Disease After Gestational Diabetes, Daisy Baldwin Aug 2026

Sustaining A Sense Of Unknowing Of The Risk For Coronary Artery Disease After Gestational Diabetes, Daisy Baldwin

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major global health issue (Khan et al., 2020; Roth et al., 2017; Virani et al., 2021) and affects many women, with one death every 16 minutes in Canada (Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, 2023; Norris & Mulvagh, 2024). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a rising non-traditional CAD risk factor (Garcia et al., 2016; Mussa et al., 2021; Saeedi et al., 2019), increases women’s CAD risk fourfold (Garcia et al., 2016). Despite this, women often lack knowledge of the long-term risks associated with GDM (Craig et al., 2020; Khooshehchin et al., 2016; Lennon, 2018; …

Co-Designing Success: Supporting New Rns In Their Transition To Practice, Morgan Hoffarth, Robert Mihan, Shanoja Naik, Hasitha Wimalarathna, Doris Grinspun Aug 2026

Co-Designing Success: Supporting New Rns In Their Transition To Practice, Morgan Hoffarth, Robert Mihan, Shanoja Naik, Hasitha Wimalarathna, Doris Grinspun

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Newly graduated nurses (NGNs) face disproportionately high turnover rates compared to experienced nurses, with estimates ranging from 18% to 43% globally1. This persistent challenge has prompted increased attention to transition-to-practice programs, which aim to support NGNs during their critical first year of work3. Research has identified key facilitators and barriers to successful transition through thematic analysis; however, their recommendations lacked direct input from NGNs themselves, highlighting a gap in participatory approaches3. Understanding the transition experience from NGNs and mentors is essential to design effective, responsive supports5. The urgency of this issue has …

Reimagining Access In Nursing Research Methodologies, Elizabeth Straus Aug 2026

Reimagining Access In Nursing Research Methodologies, Elizabeth Straus

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Dismantling structural and systemic ableism in nursing research is essential to the promotion of equity with disability communities; however, issues of access and ableism rarely find their way into dialogues about equity-oriented and anti-oppressive research in nursing. We think with disabled scholars of colour, such as Campbell (2001) and Lewis (2022), who define ableism as a system of beliefs and values that “assigns value to people's bodies and minds based on societally constructed ideas of normalcy, productivity, desirability, intelligence, excellence, and fitness” (Lewis, 2022). Nursing research methodologies and practices tend to be enacted under an assumption that people move, think, …

Exploring The Relationship Between Registered Nurses’ Resilience And Disaster Response Readiness, Jessica Parrott, Janice Evans Hawkins, Beth Tremblay, Robert Joseph Hawkins

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Nurses play a critical role in disaster response and readiness. While there is significant research that speaks to the importance of resiliency in the nursing profession, there is a lack of research specific to the relationship between resiliency and disaster response readiness. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between RNs’ resilience and their readiness to respond to disasters. This descriptive cross-sectional study used purposive and snowball sampling to recruit participants. Data were collected via an anonymous online survey. Descriptive, non-inferential, and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. The sample included 352 RNs representing 271 distinct …

Data Centers As Engines Of Corporate Tax Base Restructuring, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Domenico Imparato, Karen Sam Aug 2026

Data Centers As Engines Of Corporate Tax Base Restructuring, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Domenico Imparato, Karen Sam

Articles

Globalization has eroded the corporate income tax by undermining both source-and residence-based taxation. Before the 1980s, large capital-exporting countries could impose relatively high tax rates on multinationals and extend taxation to low-taxed foreign income earned through controlled foreign corporations, as exemplified by the U.S. adoption of subpart F in the Revenue Act of 1962. That regime supported corporate tax revenues that reached roughly 25 percent of total U.S. receipts in the mid-20th century.

Globalization changed that equilibrium. Multinational corporations gained the ability to arbitrage national tax systems by relocating and reporting profits in low-tax jurisdictions. Active income largely escaped source …

Education And Inequality:: Shaping Conflict And Peace In Broken Socio-Economic Structures, Anna Zherdeva, Daniel Kamphambale, Lucía Morales Aug 2026

Education And Inequality:: Shaping Conflict And Peace In Broken Socio-Economic Structures, Anna Zherdeva, Daniel Kamphambale, Lucía Morales

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This study engages in a critical literature review that offers insights into systemic and structural problems that immigrants face. Being forced, in many cases, to flee from their countries of origin, migrants face many challenges due to a lack of clear educational pathways, cultural integration and social lifts within the world's most advanced countries. For instance, migrants often experience labour-market resistance, as evidenced by consistent, stagnant rates of advancement into higher positions in their host countries and by their limited integration into communities and society. An additional problem is that segregation by country of origin matters significantly, as migrants face …

Retroverse: Enhancing Fashion Shopping Experience Through Augmented Reality, Fanghao Wang Aug 2026

Retroverse: Enhancing Fashion Shopping Experience Through Augmented Reality, Fanghao Wang

Theses

RetroVerse is a conceptual augmented reality (AR) application that reimagines the vintage fashion shopping experience by addressing the information gaps that often make secondhand purchasing uncertain and inefficient. As the resale market continues to grow, consumers frequently struggle to identify garments, verify authenticity, evaluate condition, compare prices, and determine fit, requiring them to rely on multiple platforms and personal knowledge before making a purchase. To address these challenges, RetroVerse integrates augmented reality, image recognition, and contextual product information into a unified shopping experience. Through video and live garment scanning, users can access brand history, manufacturing information, condition assessments, marketplace price …

The Effects Of Using Hip-Hop Song Lyrics During Instruction For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Jonte C. Taylor, Millie Rodriguez Aug 2026

The Effects Of Using Hip-Hop Song Lyrics During Instruction For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Jonte C. Taylor, Millie Rodriguez

Journal of the Arts and Special Education

Hip-hop pedagogy has emerged as a culturally responsive instructional framework designed to increase student engagement, identity affirmation, and academic achievement by incorporating elements of hip-hop culture into classroom instruction. Despite growing interest in hip-hop-based education, limited empirical research has examined its effectiveness for students with disabilities, particularly students identified with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). This study investigated the effects of using hip-hop song lyrics during English language arts instruction to teach literary devices to three secondary students with EBD using a single-case multiple-baseline-across-participants probe design. Three comparison students receiving traditional textbook-based instruction were also included. Dependent variables included instructional …

Recognition Of Autism Characteristics In Females: An Examination Of Stakeholders, Laurel Lyn Bishop Aug 2026

Recognition Of Autism Characteristics In Females: An Examination Of Stakeholders, Laurel Lyn Bishop

Theses and Dissertations

Autism is a neurodevelopmental communication disorder, characterized by differences in social communication, attention, interests, and sensory perception. Diagnostic criteria have historically applied to males, but clinical diagnostic criteria beginning in 2022 now include slight differences in traits comprising the female phenotype. Until recently, autistic females may be missed by the professional and education community or diagnosed later than males. Like their autistic male counterparts, they face an increased risk of suicidal ideation, but they also face more difficulties in peer relationships, academic problems, and increased anxiety and depressive symptoms, but may not get supports. School-age girls spend their days with …

Radical Republican Citizenship For A Mobile World, Alex Sager Aug 2026

Radical Republican Citizenship For A Mobile World, Alex Sager

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Migrants invariably and unavoidably experience domination under the nation-state centered concepts, categories, and institutions that structure our political thinking. In response, we need to build new forms of citizenship, including local, regional, transnational, and supranational forms of belonging, accompanied by meaningful, democratic, political power. In this paper, I examine historical and present-day alternative models of political organization as possible viable alternatives to state-centric liberal democracy. It begins the task of assessing these models using radical republican theory that grounds non-domination in the active and equal participation of people subject to power. I have three broad aims. First, we need to …

Toroidal Plasmonic Nanodimers For Enhanced Near-Infrared Emission In Heterostructured Inp Quantum Dots, Arda Gülücü, Emre Ozan Polat Aug 2026

Toroidal Plasmonic Nanodimers For Enhanced Near-Infrared Emission In Heterostructured Inp Quantum Dots, Arda Gülücü, Emre Ozan Polat

Turkish Journal of Physics

Near-infrared (NIR) emitters operating in the 650--900 nm spectral range are highly attractive for imaging and sensing in turbid media. However, cadmium-free InP-based quantum dots (QDs) often exhibit limited brightness owing to nonradiative recombination pathways and inefficient photon outcoupling. In particular, heterostructured InP QDs may possess band alignments that induce partial spatial separation of charge carriers, thereby reducing the electron-hole wavefunction overlap. This characteristic modifies the intrinsic recombination dynamics and increases the sensitivity of their emission to the surrounding photonic environment. Here, we investigate silver toroidal plasmonic nanoantenna dimers (Ag TPNDs) using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations as a geometry-tunable platform …

From Fragmented Services To Integrated Support: A Proposal For A Centralized Adult Learner Center, Paul Cullen Aug 2026

From Fragmented Services To Integrated Support: A Proposal For A Centralized Adult Learner Center, Paul Cullen

Masters Projects

Research shows that higher education institutions provide a wide range of resources to their students. However, limitations in availability, accessibility, and navigation create a fragmented experience for adult learners. This fragmented experience often exacerbates barriers experienced by adult learners, such as difficulty navigating decentralized services and lack of availability outside standard business hours, that negatively impact the learner experience and outcomes, resulting in reduced persistence and retention. This project proposes a solution to this fragmentation and shows how the digital transformation in higher education can be utilized as an enabling approach to improve availability, accessibility, and navigation of services for …

Mathematics Anxiety And Academic Performance In Mathematics, Bradley Vandermissen Aug 2026

Mathematics Anxiety And Academic Performance In Mathematics, Bradley Vandermissen

Masters Projects

Mathematics anxiety represents a psychological barrier that negatively impacts student academic performance and self-efficacy across all educational levels. Many secondary mathematics students experience physiological stress, self-doubt, and reduced working memory efficiency when encountering mathematical tasks, often leading to disengagement or an over-reliance on artificial intelligence (AI as a learning shortcut rather than an educational tool. Despite the widespread nature of this issue, educators frequently lack the formal training and practical pedagogical strategies necessary to identify, manage, and alleviate mathematics anxiety within their classrooms. Rooted in Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, this project addresses the underlying cognitive and biological components of mathematics …

Dynamind: A Dynamic Learned Index For Update-Intensive Workloads, Jingxian Cheng, Yingfang Wang, Tianqing Zhu, Xu Yang, Ningning Cui, Jianxin Li Aug 2026

Dynamind: A Dynamic Learned Index For Update-Intensive Workloads, Jingxian Cheng, Yingfang Wang, Tianqing Zhu, Xu Yang, Ningning Cui, Jianxin Li

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Learned indexes leverage machine learning models to approximate data distributions and predict key positions, offering better performance than traditional index structures such as B+Trees. As data in real-world applications evolve rapidly, the timely and efficient updating of learned indexes has become an increasingly important research problem, attracting growing attention in recent studies. However, under update-intensive workloads with frequent insertions and deletions, existing learned indexes cannot update the model in a timely manner. Moreover, they ignore the impact of deletions on model accuracy. These limitations lead to degraded prediction accuracy and increased query latency, undermining the core advantage of learned indexes. …

Impact Of After-School Care On Maternal Income: Evidence From Canadian Administrative Data, Ailin He, Laetitia Renée, Nagham Sayour Aug 2026

Impact Of After-School Care On Maternal Income: Evidence From Canadian Administrative Data, Ailin He, Laetitia Renée, Nagham Sayour

All Works

This paper estimates the average causal effect of access to subsidized before- and after-school care on the labour market outcomes of mothers. Specifically, we analyze a major policy reform implemented in Quebec (Canada) in 1998, which required all public primary schools to provide before- and after-school care at a low fixed fee, thereby reducing costs and expanding availability for families. We identify the intent-to-treat effect of the reform on service use and maternal labour market outcomes using administrative tax return data and a triple difference design. We find that, 7 years after implementation, the policy led to a substantial increase …

How Racial-Ethnic, Immigration, And 2slgbtq+ Intersectional Self-Efficacy Of Gender-Sexuality Alliance Advisors Shapes Youth Members’ Positive Experiences, Tessa M.L. Kaufman, Wouter J. Kiekens, Maria Di Stasio, Alex Mascarino, Robert A. Marx, V. Paul Poteat Aug 2026

How Racial-Ethnic, Immigration, And 2slgbtq+ Intersectional Self-Efficacy Of Gender-Sexuality Alliance Advisors Shapes Youth Members’ Positive Experiences, Tessa M.L. Kaufman, Wouter J. Kiekens, Maria Di Stasio, Alex Mascarino, Robert A. Marx, V. Paul Poteat

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Gender–sexuality alliances (GSAs) provide critical support for 2SLGBTQ+ youth, yet the role of advisors—particularly in their self-efficacy to address race-, ethnicity-, and immigration-related issues, including how these intersect with sexual and gender identity, a construct we term racial-ethnic, immigration, and intersectional self-efficacy (REISE)—remains understudied. This study examined (a) which advisor-, GSA-, and school-related factors are associated with advisors' REISE, and (b) how this efficacy relates to youth members' socioemotional experiences. Data were collected from 627 GSA members at three time points and from 64 advisors at one time point from 51 GSAs in Massachusetts, New York City, and California. Advisors' …
