Journal of International Engineering Education
As globalization accelerates and engineering careers increasingly require international collaboration, engineering education programs must design courses and curricula to adequately prepare students for careers as engineers in modern industry. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is a model of teaching and learning that supports the development of intercultural competence through a joint online learning environment. This paper presents a systems engineering approach of module development for an integrated COIL undergraduate course between a university in the United States and a university in Nigeria. The key objectives of this course are to increase students’ intercultural competence and to simulate global engineering management …
Extending Legal Privilege To In-House Counsel In India, L Viswanathan, Animesh Bisht
Extending Legal Privilege To In-House Counsel In India, L Viswanathan, Animesh Bisht
National Law School of India Review
Client-attorney privilege is a cornerstone of the rule of law, yet its extension to in-house counsel in India remains fraught with uncertainty. The Supreme Court’s recent decision in In re: Summoning Advocates who give legal opinion or represent parties during investigation of cases and related issues, Suo Moto Writ Petition (Criminal) No. 2 of 2025, reinforced a status-based exclusion, holding that in-house counsel fall outside the definition of “Advocate” under the Advocates Act, 1961 and the Bar Council of India Rules, and therefore cannot claim privilege under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. This paper examines the Indian statutory framework and …

High-Deductible Health Plans In Rural And Urban Populations: Outpatient Utilization And Out-Of-Pocket Costs, Aaron P. Smith, Jefferey Talbert
Rural & Underserved Health Research Center Publications
Overview of Key Findings This policy brief explores rural-urban differences in High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) enrollment, subsequent healthcare utilization, and out-of-pocket (OOP) costs. ▪ HDHP enrollment was uncommon. Rural residents were slightly less likely to enroll than urban residents across all demographic groups. ▪ Switching plans influenced utilization. Compared to those who did not change healthcare plans, switching from a Traditional plan to a HDHP was associated with a larger reduction in 2022 outpatient visits for both rural and urban residents. Moving from a HDHP to a Traditional plan was associated with a smaller reduction in 2022 outpatient visits for …
Nurse Manager Perceptions Of Strategies To Overcome The Underutilization Of Nonpharmacological Pain Control Methods In Adult Acute Care, Landen M. Bonnell
Nurse Manager Perceptions Of Strategies To Overcome The Underutilization Of Nonpharmacological Pain Control Methods In Adult Acute Care, Landen M. Bonnell
Undergraduate Honors Theses
A basic patient right is to have pain adequately managed. However, research consistently indicates that many adult patients in acute care experience inadequately managed pain, which may contribute to adverse patient outcomes. Studies have shown that nonpharmacological pain management can lead to increased patient satisfaction, shorter hospital stays, and better patient outcomes. However, many barriers exist to nurses providing effective nonpharmacological pain control therapy, primarily including heavy workload and a lack of education and support. Currently, there is insufficient research on how to overcome these barriers. Four nurse managers with experience in nursing leadership were interviewed using a qualitative descriptive …

Online Group Neurobehavioral Therapy (Nbt) For Veterans With Epilepsy And Major Depressive Disorder (Mdd), Melissa F. Fadipe
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background: Veterans with epilepsy experience high rates of psychiatric comorbidity, most commonly major depressive disorder (MDD). Barriers to accessing mental health care—including geographic distance, transportation limitations related to seizure-related driving restrictions, and fragmented care between neurology and psychiatry, contribute to the underdiagnosis and undertreatment of MDD in this population. Neurobehavioral Therapy (NBT), a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-informed psychotherapy developed for individuals with seizures, has demonstrated benefits for psychological distress and quality of life. Internet-based interventions and short message service (SMS) text messaging offer promising strategies to address access barriers; however, limited research has examined the feasibility and acceptability of delivering …

Baseline Nutrition Knowledge And Feasibility Of A Whatsapp-Delivered Nutrition Education Intervention Among California Wildland-Urban Interface Firefighters, Lauren E. Anderson
Master's Theses
Wildland firefighters perform physically demanding work under challenging environmental conditions that place substantial demands on nutritional health and occupational performance. Despite the importance of nutrition in supporting physical performance, recovery, and long-term health, limited research has examined nutrition knowledge and dietary behaviors among California wildland firefighters or evaluated the feasibility of remotely delivered nutrition education interventions within this occupational population. Therefore, the purpose of this pilot study was to assess baseline nutrition knowledge, nutrition self-efficacy, and dietary behaviors while evaluating the feasibility of a 12-week WhatsApp-delivered nutrition education intervention among California wildland firefighters.
Twenty-four firefighters completed the baseline assessment and …

The locus coeruleus (LC) is the source of norepinephrinergic innervation in the human brain. Locus coeruleus pathology has been linked to clinical conditions such as cognitive impairment and behavioral and psychiatric symptoms of dementia (BPSD). However, phosphorylated TDP-43 (pTDP-43) pathology in the LC has been understudied, particularly in the contexts of aging and limbic predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATE-NC). Here, a convenience sample (n = 134) of autopsied participants from the University of Kentucky Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center community-based cohort was analyzed for LC pTDP-43 and phosphorylated tau (pTau) pathologies. Locus coeruleus pTDP-43 pathology was found in 28/134 …

INTRODUCTION: Dysfunctional microRNAs and GABAergic interneurons are features of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The role of neuronal microRNA155 (miR155), elevated in both AD and Down syndrome (DS), remains unknown.
METHODS: We utilized in silico analyses of published databases, MIR155-deleted and -overexpressing human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cells, cortical organoids, and amyloid beta precursor protein (APP)/PS1-miR155 knockout mouse.
RESULTS: MIR155HG (miR155 host gene) colocalizes with APP in a neuron-specific, topologically associated domain (TAD) in chromosome 21. In human neural stem cells (NSCs), neurons, and cortical organoids, MIR155 deletion enhanced NSC proliferation and GABAergic interneuron generation. MIR155 overexpression inhibited NSC marker expression …

Vascular-related factors are now considered major contributors to most forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. However, the degree to which vascular deficits contribute to risk, onset, and progression of cognitive impairment and dementia has only recently been appreciated. Our understanding of the mechanisms by which vascular deficits drive cognitive decline in dementia is still limited. Further, the testing of therapeutic approaches to prevent vascular deficits to treat dementia are few. These factors motivated the establishment of the Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia (VCID) Center Without Walls (CWOW) network, comprising institutes across the United States. We describe the current …

INTRODUCTION: Post mortem proteomic analysis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain tissue has identified novel target genes and proteins for potential therapeutic development. Moesin (MSN) and CD44 were identified as candidate targets. Using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs)-derived neurons, we assayed how reducing gene expression of MSN and CD44 affected amyloid beta secretion, tau phosphorylation, and transcriptional state.
METHODS: Knockdown of MSN and CD44 in hiPSC-derived neurons was performed using short hairpin RNA (shRNA). Amyloid precursor protein processing and intracellular tau phosphorylation was measured using chemiluminescent ELISA assays. Global gene expression was analyzed by bulk RNA sequencing (RNA-seq).
RESULTS: Knockdown …

Traumatic knee injury leads to posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) and significant skeletal muscle weakness, resulting in chronic disability. The current standard of care frequently fails to prevent musculoskeletal dysfunction, underscoring the need to identify therapeutic mechanisms of PTOA. Using an established preclinical anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) transection model of PTOA and leveraging an innovative SPiDER-senescence-associated β-galactosidase stain to discern senescent cells, we investigated cellular senescence at single-cell resolution and identified anti-inflammatory macrophages as a predominant contributor to the senescent cell burden in both muscle and knee joint after injury. Clearance of senescent cells using the senolytic dasatinib and quercetin (D + …

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
Higher education depends on discretionary employee contributions that sustain coordination, service continuity, and institutional functioning. Yet contemporary governance and accountability pressures can reconfigure higher education work in ways that erode autonomy, line-of-sight, and intrinsic reward, elevating the risk of work alienation, weakening the discretionary behaviors institutions rely on. This study tests whether person–organization fit (POF) predicts organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and whether multidimensional work alienation mediates this relationship through powerlessness, meaninglessness, and self-estrangement. Using survey data from 325 employees across four U.S. higher education institutions, we applied confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling with bias-corrected bootstrapping. Model comparisons were …

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
By age 17, a quarter of U.S. students have experienced a peer suicide. Using linked administrative data from South Carolina and a matched difference-in-differences design, we find that exposure to a peer’s self-harm death increases the probability of a self-harm diagnosis by nearly 50% and both the incidence and frequency of mental health visits. Effects on care use and criminal behavior are concentrated among white boys, and responses diverge by prior mental health history: students without a prior diagnosis increase felony offending rather than care-seeking. Deaths from assault and transportation accidents produce no comparable rise in self-harm, consistent with contagion.

Gridded reference evapotranspiration (ETo) data are widely used for agricultural water management and remote sensing evapotranspiration (RSET) models, but biases can arise where coarse meteorological inputs fail to capture agricultural microclimates. We investigated biases in the gridMET ETo product across irrigated agricultural areas of the contiguous United States using ETo calculated from 793 agricultural weather stations, then used those stations to develop monthly correction surfaces. Results show that gridMET systematically overestimates ETo by 10–20% at most cropland sites, while pockets of underestimation appear in some arid western regions, primarily due to wind speed bias. Wind …

PCOM Scholarly Works
BACKGROUND: Percutaneous osteotomy for adolescent hallux valgus has become an increasingly popular technique due to its quick recovery time and effectiveness. Few studies have assessed both the radiographic and clinical outcomes of percutaneous osteotomy. We present a series that demonstrates adequate radiographic correction and favorable postoperative patient-reported outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 27 percutaneous distal metatarsal osteotomies for adolescent hallux valgus performed by two surgeons was conducted at two urban, tertiary children's hospitals. Cases were excluded if radiographic imaging information was not available. Pre- and postoperative radiographic measurements, including hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and distal metatarsal …

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
This qualitative Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice examined how Building Thinking Classrooms for Social-Emotional Learning (BTC-SEL), an instructional approach adapted from Liljedahl's (2021) mathematics framework, could strengthen SEL instruction in Connecticut elementary schools. The study addressed a persistent problem of practice in which traditional SEL delivery fails to engage the students most in need of support, particularly Black and Hispanic/Latino students, students with disabilities, and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Grounded in engagement theory, cognitive load theory, and social constructivism, the three-month intervention supported six elementary teachers across three Connecticut districts, including schools from District Reference Groups I and D …
A Mixed-Methods Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Patients And Caregivers Receiving Home Health Occupational Therapy Services, Peyton A. Mendias
A Mixed-Methods Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Patients And Caregivers Receiving Home Health Occupational Therapy Services, Peyton A. Mendias
Student Capstone Papers
Home health occupational therapy (OT) supports individuals’ safety, independence, and participation in their natural environments; however, patients and caregivers may face barriers that affect the implementation of therapy recommendations. This capstone project explored patient and caregiver experiences with home health OT and identified factors influencing implementation of OT recommendations. We used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design guided by the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation–Behavior (COM-B) model. Eight participants, including three patients and five caregivers, completed an electronic survey, and one caregiver participated in a follow-up semi-structured interview. We analyzed quantitative data using descriptive statistics and qualitative data using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings …

Exploring The Effect Of Writing-To-Learn Practices On Critical Thinking In A Graduate Teacher Education Program, Alisa Alybaeva
GHEA21 Publications
This project investigates the impact of writing-to-learn practices on the critical thinking skills of first-year students in a graduate teacher preparation program in the Kyrgyz Republic. For this purpose, multiple writing-to-learn strategies (such as Focused Freewriting, Loop Writing, Private Freewriting, Writing in the Zones, Dialectical Notebooks, and others) were integrated into the academic writing course instruction. The analysis of student responses at the beginning and end of the course demonstrated a movement from general statements towards richer responses with evidence of perspective taking, metacognitive reflection, and synthesis. Additionally, student reflections revealed that writing-to-learn practices provided space to overcome writing anxiety, …

All Faculty Scholarship
Background: Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies among men worldwide, with incidence rates rising steadily over the past decades. Although the widespread adoption of PSA screening has improved early detection, it has also sparked extensive debate regarding overdiagnosis and overtreatment. Against this backdrop, balancing the avoidance of unnecessary interventions with the need to ensure favorable patient outcomes has become a central challenge in clinical decision-making. Methods: Articles published from 2010 through 2025 were searched in five databases. The cross-sectional and cohort studies examined the effects of treatment options on localized prostate cancer. Results: From the analysis of …

Improving Obesity Management In Primary Care Through Provider Education, Natalie Anderson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Childhood obesity is a significant public health concern associated with metabolic, cardiovascular, and psychosocial complications. Despite the availability of evidence-based pediatric obesity management guidelines, adherence to these guidelines remains inconsistent in primary care settings. Purpose: This evidence-based quality improvement project aimed to determine whether provider education on the 2023 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Treatment of Children and Adolescents With Obesity, combined with implementation of an electronic health record (EHR) clinical decision support prompt, improved provider knowledge and adherence to guideline-recommended obesity management practices. Method: A pre-post quasi-experimental study was …
Shifting Faith Among Indigenous People In Arunachal Pradesh, India: Revisiting Greenfeld's Civilizational Framework, M. Amin Khan
Shifting Faith Among Indigenous People In Arunachal Pradesh, India: Revisiting Greenfeld's Civilizational Framework, M. Amin Khan
Comparative Civilizations Review
This paper examines changing religious demography in Arunachal Pradesh through Liah Greenfeld's theory of civilization as a self-generating and self-reproducing symbolic reality. Using decadal Census data (1971–2011), it traces the demographic decline of Indigenous/Tribal religions classified under “Other Religions and Persuasions” (ORP) alongside the widespread growth of Christianity and the more limited growth of Hinduism. The analysis argues that these demographic shifts reflect more than religious conversion; they reveal differential capacities for cultural reproduction. Whereas civilizations endowed with codified first principles and enduring institutions sustain continuity across generations, Arunachal Pradesh's largely localized and orally transmitted indigenous traditions have proven less …
A Study Of Phylogenetic Relationships Of Dichanthelium Based On Plastomes, Humera Fatima
A Study Of Phylogenetic Relationships Of Dichanthelium Based On Plastomes, Humera Fatima
Theses
Dichanthelium (Hitchcock & Chase) Gould is a genus in the grass family (Poaceae) with a wide range of morphological diversity, exhibiting significant ecological differences. Despite this, its evolutionary relationships are not fully understood. The ambiguity surrounding the boundaries of lineages and the relationships among species has hindered the systematics of the genus. This study aimed to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships within Dichanthelium, verify the monophyly of species, and evaluate the strength of the inferred relationships across different analytical frameworks. Molecular sequence data of entire plastomes were examined using both maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods to develop phylogenetic hypotheses. Phylogenies …
