Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences

The development of dosage forms necessitates the evaluation of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), which aids scientists in elucidating the drug's mechanism of action and achieving optimal composite design. The incorporation of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) efficacy studies in the early phases of lead identification and optimisation within drug development can markedly expedite the selection of the most promising dosage forms. The rapid advancement of computer hardware, software, and algorithms, along with drug screening and PK/PD evaluation, has significantly benefited from various computational methods, which substantially decrease the time and cost associated with drug development. Computational pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modelling enhances the translation of in …

Measuring Equity In Environmental Care: Methodology And An Application To Air Pollution, Antonio Abatemarco, Roberto Dell'anno, Elena Lagomarsino Jul 2025

Measuring Equity In Environmental Care: Methodology And An Application To Air Pollution, Antonio Abatemarco, Roberto Dell'anno, Elena Lagomarsino

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The implementation of environmental policies varies substantially across geographical areas. This paper proposes a conceptual and methodological framework—adapted from the health economics literature— to assess equity in the allocation of environmental policy effort. We define “environmental care” as the set of local policy interventions aimed at improving environmental quality within an area, and evaluate its distribution relative to environmental need. Using direct and indirect standardization techniques, we measure horizontal inequity (unequal care among areas with similar need) and vertical inequity (differential care in response to differing needs). Applying this framework to traffic-related air pollution policies in Italian municipalities from 2012 …

Co-Optive Constitutionalism, Raquel Muñiz, Andrés Castro Samayoa Jul 2025

Co-Optive Constitutionalism, Raquel Muñiz, Andrés Castro Samayoa

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

In this Article, we introduce the concept of co-optive constitutionalism, a rhetorical mechanism through which the U.S. Supreme Court dismantles civil rights protections while paradoxically employing civil rights language to legitimize these regressive outcomes. Through a detailed analysis of the majority, concurrences, and dissents in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, we demonstrate how the Court's conservative majority strategically appropriates progressive ideals, selectively quotes precedent, and redefines equality to justify overturning decades-long precedent permitting race-conscious admissions. We situate co-optive constitutionalism within the broader conservative legal political movement spearheaded by the Federalist Society, revealing how judicial rhetoric aligns with conservative political …

Coastal radar system are located around the world and many happen to transmit at frequencies capable of skywave propagation via the ionosphere. Therefore, they can be detected hundreds to thousands of kilometers away. This paper demonstrates the opportunity to detect 39 Coastal Ocean Dynamics Application Radar transmitters located on the western coast of the United States using three HF radio receivers in Utah and New Mexico. It also illustrates the possibility to use the phase and Doppler measurements of these signals to derive displacements of the refracting ionospheric layer up to meter resolution for the 2023 annular solar eclipse, an …

Respondents indicated a need for assistance with cash flow management and access to capital. Respondents also indicated a need for assistance with networking, online …

The Walk Away From Racial Equality, Areto Imoukhuede Jul 2025

The Walk Away From Racial Equality, Areto Imoukhuede

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This article demonstrates that the U.S. Supreme Court has walked away from racial equality in favor of the same liberal equality approach that was the foundation for Plessy v. Ferguson’s “separate but equal” doctrine. The Court’s recent affirmative action cases, from Grutter and Gratz v. Bollinger, to Fisher v. University of Texas, to Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, all apply a liberal equality theory that is hostile to racial equality. In the lead-up to these cases, the Court abandoned its Brown-era interpretation of equality under the Fourteenth Amendment Equal Protection Clause in favor of …

Disability Activism And Legal Education: How The Student And Parent Activists Of The Disability Rights Movement Paved The Way For Law Students To Challenge Discrimination, Dana Dworkin

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Disability discrimination in education is a long-standing and powerful tradition in the United States. Students with disabilities in higher education have historically been, and continue to be, the most powerful harbingers of change in eliminating disability discrimination in education. The birth of the disability rights movement occurred in higher education institutions across the nation in the 1970s, and the movement achieved both cultural and legislative success. Its spirit continues on today in U.S. law schools. Law students with disabilities are utilizing the legislative advances achieved by the disability rights activists of yesteryear in order to create a more equitable system …

Sparing The Gory Details: Legal And Social Inertia And The Refusal To Confront The Body In Pregnancy, Francesca Laguardia Jul 2025

Sparing The Gory Details: Legal And Social Inertia And The Refusal To Confront The Body In Pregnancy, Francesca Laguardia

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Health, including pain, suffering, blood, and guts, has always played an outsized role in legal and public analysis of abortion. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the health implications of forced childbirth have returned to the public’s attention, as evidenced by prevalent health exceptions to abortion bans, legal actions in regard to those bans and exceptions, public attention to those cases, and public opinion polling. Recent, highly publicized cases of medical emergencies associated with pregnancy could be expected to reinvigorate a public exploration of the health risks of pregnancy, but the public has consistently refused to acknowledge the full …

Analysis For Idempotent States On Quantum Permutation Groups, J.P. Mccarthy Jul 2025

Analysis For Idempotent States On Quantum Permutation Groups, J.P. Mccarthy

Department of Mathematics Publications

Woronowicz proved the existence of the Haar state for compact quantum groups under a separability assumption later removed by Van Daele in a new existence proof. A minor adaptation of Van Daele’s proof yields an idempotent state in any non-empty weak-* compact convolution-closed convex subset of the state space. Such subsets, and their associated idempotent states, are studied in the case of quantum permutation groups.

Transcendental Arguments In Reid? A Reply To Mccraw, Peter Baumann Jul 2025

Transcendental Arguments In Reid? A Reply To Mccraw, Peter Baumann

Philosophy Faculty Works

Benjamin W. McCraw’s article “A Reidian Transcendental Argument Against Skepticism” (2025) constitutes an original and thought-provoking contribution both to Reid scholarship and to the discussion of epistemic skepticism.[1] In the following I will make a few remarks about it, focusing on the discussion of skepticism. I start with a brief historical remark on Reid and Kant (§ 1) before I explain the anti-skeptical argument in some detail (§ 2). A discussion of the premises of the argument follows (§ 3). I add some remarks about the social aspect of McCraw’s anti-skeptical stance (§ 4). I finish with another set of …

Lived Experiences Of Ex-Offenders In Securing Stable Employment After Reentry Programs, Tony Lemar Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals into society has garnered increasing attention largely due to structural and social barriers that impede their successful transition. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of ex-offenders who successfully obtained gainful employment following their reintegration into society while navigating the enduring consequences of their past convictions. Self-determination, self-efficacy, and implicit theories grounded this study. Ten participants were recruited through social media platforms and flyers on community billboards in a suburban area of Ohio. Data were collected using semistructured in-depth interviews. Narrative coding, according to Saldana, was used …

Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), an inflammatory disease of the liver, has recently raised concern among healthcare professionals worldwide due to its asymptomatic features, making early diagnosis challenging. If left unnoticed, NASH often progresses to lethal diseases such as liver fibrosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) might facilitate the early diagnosis of NASH in a more efficient manner, forming a promising strategy to diagnose patients. In simple terms, AI is any machine that is capable of human-level intelligence, including visual perception, speech recognition, or decision making. A subclass of AI, which particularly deals with knowledge-based …

Objective: The Houston Conference Guidelines (Hannay et al., 1998) provided an initial framework for North American neuropsychology training that served the specialty well for several decades. Subsequent advances in technology, increased diversity of the U.S. and Canadian populations, and the adoption of competency-based training models within Health Service Psychology have created a need to update neuropsychology training guidelines. Therefore, in 2022, the Minnesota Conference to Update Education and Training Guidelines in Clinical Neuropsychology began a two-year drafting process leading to the currently proposed update.

Method: A Steering Committee worked with content experts, consultants, and delegates representing North American neuropsychological organizations …

Making The New Public Safety Safe, Christopher Slobogin Jul 2025

Making The New Public Safety Safe, Christopher Slobogin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Shawn Fields' The New Public Safety: Police Reform and the Lurking Threat to Civil Liberties, which will be published by the University of California Press in September, is a brave and wise effort to envision a post-DeFund the Police world. While the defund movement has, at best, been a mixed success, some municipalities have experimented with de-policing routine interactions with people who are unhoused and mentally ill, authorizing civilian "violence interrupters" to roam the streets, and handing over traffic enforcement to unarmed officials. In The New Public Safety, Fields endorses these developments but also cautions that, without regulation, they will …

Lived Experiences Of Sexual Orientation Discrimination Of Gay Male Service Members, Dwayne A. Tyler

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy (DADT) has been an area of study among scholars since 2011. Researchers have demonstrated that discrimination based on sexual orientation is still occurring in the armed forces. However, researchers have not studied the lived experiences of active-duty male service members in the army who self-identified as gay. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to examine the lived experiences of discrimination based on the sexual orientation of male service members who self-identified as gay in the army since the repeal of the DADT policy. Using semi-structured interviews, four self-identified gay …
