Diagnostic delays and laboratory process inefficiencies constitute a common but unaddressed dilemma in contemporary healthcare, quietly undermining patient outcomes in metabolic and cardiovascular illnesses where immediate intervention is critical. This seminal work goes beyond traditional operational viewpoints to demonstrate diagnostic inefficiency as an independent, adjustable risk factor with far-reaching implications. We rigorously quantified the impact of delayed test processing and reporting on clinical outcomes using a comprehensive mixed-methods approach that included multi-center retrospective cohort analysis (N=128,743 patients), real-time workflow mapping across 37 laboratories, in-depth case reviews, and economic modeling. Our findings challenged conventional wisdom by indicating that each 24-hour increase …
A Focused Ethnography: Mental Health Therapists In Pediatric Integrated Care, Melanie Agustin
A Focused Ethnography: Mental Health Therapists In Pediatric Integrated Care, Melanie Agustin
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
The scope of practice for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and counseling residents (LPC-R) in integrated behavioral health (IBH) settings is grounded in accredited, theory-informed education and training. The benefits of IBH models are well-documented, however there is limited research that addresses how counselors develop professionally and clinically function, while navigating within pediatric inpatient environments. This qualitative dissertation used a focused ethnographic design to explore the lived experiences of ten purposively sampled counselors (n = 10) through demographic surveys, field observation, and semi-structured interviews. Reflexive journaling bracketed researcher bias, and thematic analysis, supported by NVivo and new member checking, guided interpretation. …

A Methodology For Model-Based Certification, Jay Albert Silverman
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A need for a single source of knowledge for design decisions has led to the development of a new field of systems engineering, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) (Delligati, 2014). System certification is defined as affirming that regulatory requirements for a system have been met (Goodwin & Juzaitis, 2006). System certification is a specific application of system validation. System verification can be defined as ensuring that the system of interest (SOI), as designed, is in accordance with the design inputs/requirements. System validation can be defined as ensuring that the SOI, as designed, meets the defined system needs (Wolfgand, Katz, & Wheatcraft, …

The application of digital pathology tools has expanded in recent years, but non-neoplastic human brain tissue presents unique challenges due to its complexity. This study evaluated HALO and QuPath tau quantification performance in the hippocampus and mid-frontal gyrus across various tauopathies. Percent positivity emerged as the most reliable measure, showing strong correlations with Braak stages and CERAD scores, outperforming object and optical densities. QuPath demonstrated superior correlations with Braak stages, while HALO excelled in aligning with CERAD scoring. However, HALO’s optical density was less consistent. Paired t-tests revealed significant differences in object and optical densities between platforms, though percent positivity …

Recommended For You Streaming Platform Recommendation Algorithms And Consumer Rights, Margaret Wilson
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
Streaming platforms are becoming increasingly popular with consumers. In Canada, recent studies have suggested that 55% of Canadians use video streaming services, like Netflix, on a daily basis. Similarly, up to 30% stream audio content daily on platforms like Spotify.6 The federal government has recognized that the broadening use of these technologies creates new challenges for consumer privacy and has proposed updates to consumer privacy laws in Bill C-27. With the dissolution of the 44th Parliament on March 23, 2025, Bill C-27 died on the roll and will not be adopted. As proposed legislation, Bill C-27 signalled the direction of …

Navigating The Shadows: Evaluating Privacy Protections Against Dark Patterns, Matt Gaulton, Dominique Kelly, Dr. Jacquelyn Burkell
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
Privacy dark patterns are user interface design strategies that manipulate individuals into disclosing personal information or consenting to data practices they may not fully understand or intend. This paper critically evaluates the effectiveness of Canadian, American, and European privacy frameworks — specifically, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) — in addressing the regulatory challenges posed by privacy dark patterns. We argue that PIPEDA is significantly less equipped to counteract such manipulative practices, particularly in comparison to the GDPR and CCPA, due to …
Considering The Concept Of Law In The Legal Singularity, Matthew Tse
Considering The Concept Of Law In The Legal Singularity, Matthew Tse
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This review article engages with the idea of a ‘‘legal singularity”, which has been developed by Abdi Aidid and Benjamin Alarie in their book, The Legal Singularity: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Law Radically Better.
The legal singularity describes a legal system in the future that harnesses algorithmic computation to facilitate a ‘‘stable and complete legal order, capable of addressing and resolving practically all types of legal uncertainty in real time and on demand”. Aidid and Alarie believe algorithmic computation will achieve this promise in an interdependent dual process. On one hand, algorithms will structure the law with conceptual standardization. …

Children's funds of knowledge (FoK) were recognised in the initial iteration of the Australian Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) in 2009, the mandated framework for educator decision-making, and their significance was further emphasised in EYLF 2.0 in 2022. However, a unified understanding of children as knowledgeable individuals and how to effectively incorporate their diverse knowledges into early childhood education is still evolving. Recent evidence highlights the link between engaging with children's FoK and supporting successful transitions to formal schooling. Given that childhood is experienced differently across cultures and contexts, achieving consensus on the nature and value of FoK remains a …

We apply NeuroEvolution of Augmented Topologies (NEAT) to evolve adaptive and efficient swarm foraging behaviors in unknown environments with randomly placed obstacles. By rewarding effective actions and penalizing inefficient ones using the proposed strategy P-NeatFA, the training generates efficient foraging and obstacle avoidance strategies, reducing redundancy and outperforming traditional stochastic foraging algorithms. Optimization is guided by cumulative reward-based fitness, evaluated through simulations involving three types of distributed resources. Foraging performance is assessed in terms of resource retrieval rates. We compare the performance of our proposed P-NeatFA with that of CPFA and NeatFA. Experimental results show that P-NeatFA significantly outperforms the …

Integrated modular motor drive (IMMD) is an effective approach for realizing high-efficiency, high-power-density, and fault-tolerant electric machines. However, designing an efficient thermal management system (TMS) for the motor drive becomes a challenge, particularly due to space constraints. This article presents the design of a TMS based on 3-mm heat pipes for a 250-kW IMMD intended for aviation applications. The power electronics module is simulated using PLECS software where an electrothermal analysis is conducted. A simplified thermal resistance model of the system is developed to estimate the die junction temperature of gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors. The performance of the proposed TMS …

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations
Teachers are critical to education production. Yet, recruiting and retaining teachers has remained challenging, particularly in high need fields, at schools serving a high proportion of students from low-income backgrounds, and from racially diverse backgrounds. To incentivize enrollment in teacher preparation programs and to support teacher candidates through degree completion, the federal government implemented the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant in 2008. The TEACH Grant offers undergraduate and graduate students up to $16,000 and $8,000 in grant aid, respectively, to pursue degrees in high need teaching fields. I use difference-in-differences analyses to estimate the effects …

In this study, particles of ground grape seeds were utilized to adsorb phosphate ions from a prepared solution, aiming to reduce phosphate concentration. Through a series of adsorption experiments, the effects of the adsorbent concentration, initial phosphate ion concentration, temperature, and pH on the phosphate ion uptake were studied. The removal efficiency of the phosphate ion decreased from 77 to 61% as a 25 to 45 °C increment in temperature was observed, which indicated the exothermicity in the adsorption process. The phosphate ion movement onto the adsorbent surface that exhibited the highest uptake value favored a neutral reaction environment with …

Phytochemical tests were conducted to identify flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, coumarins, and saponins. The antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH assay, while vitamin C content was quantified using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and bioactive antioxidant compounds were identified through LC-MS/MS spectrophotometry. The results demonstrated that phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids and alkaloids in both extracts. Antioxidant activity assays indicated that the red dragon fruit peel extract exhibited an IC50 …
Cattle Regenerative Grazing Effects On Bat Activity In Southern Appalachia, Seth Morelock
Cattle Regenerative Grazing Effects On Bat Activity In Southern Appalachia, Seth Morelock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Livestock farming accounts for about 70% of agricultural activity, with continuous grazing as the dominant conventional practice. However, this method often degrades biodiversity and ecosystem health through overgrazing. Regenerative grazing practices offer a potential ecologically sustainable approach to cattle management. Insectivorous bats are known to use agroecosystems for foraging and roosting habitats, offering an opportunity to assess their response to regenerative grazing. Using passive acoustic monitors, we evaluated the response of bats to cattle within regenerative grazed farms in East Tennessee, USA. Overall bat activity declined when cattle entered and exited paddocks, except for the tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus …

Drivers And Consequences Of Changes In Nectar Microbiome Composition Across Spatial And Biological Scales, Daniel A. Barker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbial communities inhabiting floral nectar, known as the nectar microbiome, are important mediators of plant-pollinator interactions. However, the ecological and environmental factors that shape the composition of these microbial communities remain poorly understood. While previous studies have examined the effects of a few microbial groups, typically independent of one another, on one plant or pollinator species, this dissertation takes a wide-scale approach to explore how abiotic conditions and biotic interaction’s structure microbial communities within floral nectar. Furthermore, I also quantify how variation in microbial richness and identity influences pollinator behavior and plant reproductive success.
This dissertation shows that microbial abundance …

Genwriter: Reducing Gender Cues In Biographies Through Text Rewriting, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
Gendered language is the use of words that indicate an individual’s gender. Though useful in certain context, it can reinforce gender stereotypes and introduce bias, particularly in machine learning models used for tasks like occupation classification. When textual content such as biographies contains gender cues, it can influence model predictions, leading to unfair outcomes such as reduced hiring opportunities for women. To address this issue, we propose GenWriter, an approach that integrates Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) with Large Language Models (LLMs) to rewrite biographies in a way that obfuscates gender while preserving semantic content. We evaluate GenWriter by measuring gender bias …

Eating disorders (ED) are critical psychiatric problems that have alarmed the mental health community. Mental health professionals are increasingly recognizing the utility of data derived from social media platforms such as Twitter. However, high dimensionality and extensive feature sets of Twitter data present remarkable challenges for ED classification. To overcome these hurdles, we introduce a novel method, an informed branch and bound search technique known as ED-Filter. A proper degradation rate of bone scaffolds ensures optimal mechanical support and effective tissue regeneration. The present study examines the degradation effects of simulated body fluids (SBF) on the compressive and fatigue strength of 3D-printed PLA bone scaffolds. Scaffolds with varying surface-to-volume (S/V) ratios and identical porosity (60 %) were immersed in Hanks' solution for a maximum period of 30 days. Static and dynamic compression tests were performed at different immersion times to assess how S/V ratio influences the degradation process. CT images showed that scaffold pore structure remained interconnected after biodegradation, with no significant change in strut thickness or …

To advance the establishment of a stable H2 economy we need to solve the issue regarding its storage. The physicochemical properties of Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) make them suitable for H2 storage. Therefore, here, we synthesized two Iron-based MOFs (12-MIL-88 B(Fe), 24-MIL-88 B(Fe) at different reaction times (12 h and 24 h), to investigate the relationship between adsorption temperature and pressure with the material's surface textural properties towards H2 storage (at 30 °C, 0 °C, −78.5 °C, and −196.15 °C and from vacuum pressure to 55 bar). Results showed that at 30 °C and 0 °C adsorption temperature, H2 adsorption …

Impervious covers, such as roads, pavements, buildings, and parking lots, prevent water infiltration, thereby increasing surface runoff. The expansion of impervious cover along riverbanks in urban areas poses a significant threat to riparian ecosystems by altering species diversity and composition through hydrological changes. As dynamic ecosystems at the interface between aquatic and terrestrial environments, riparian areas play a crucial role in aquatic ecology, particularly in terms of biodiversity, bank stability, nutrient dynamics, and hydrological processes. Employing plot-based floristic sampling, this study investigated the effects of urbanisation, particularly impervious cover (quantified as PTIA, Percentage of Total Impervious Area), on riparian plant …
