Social Media Fragility Indicators: A framework for evaluating social media as fragile states

Presented at the Media Sociology Symposium, August 7th 2025

In the uncharted domain of cyberspace, social media platforms have stepped in and stepped up as state-like entities – social states – enacting governance structures supporting a variety of state services: security to safeguard user data, public services such as content moderation, regulations for civil behavior laid out in platform standards, and policing and sanctioning behavior. As social media has increasingly become the site for public discourse, platform policies are establishing these social media as ‘de facto regulators’ …

Video Modeling Using The Additional Salient Feature Of Phonetic Hand Gestures To Teach Vocal Skills, Seirra L. Mitchell

Thesis Projects

Video modeling has become an effective tool for practitioners in teaching a variety of essential skills to individuals, especially children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Video modeling is not only considered a highly effective intervention for skill acquisition, but it is also a consistent, practical, and cost-effective evidence-based teaching strategy utilized by many professionals. Research has also expanded to evaluate video modeling with additional salient features (s) to increase the effectiveness of video modeling. Although a multitude of research has explored the effectiveness of video modeling, there is limited research integrating the use of a speech-language pathology intervention strategy— …

The Impact Of West Virginia University Federal Research Grant Funding On The State’S Economy, Daniel Centuriao, Heather Stephens Aug 2025

The Impact Of West Virginia University Federal Research Grant Funding On The State’S Economy, Daniel Centuriao, Heather Stephens

Regional Research Institute Research Reports

This report evaluates the economic impact of federal research funding received by West Virginia University’s four campuses. In 2023, WVU secured $148 million in federal research grants (excluding Facilities and Ad ministrative Costs), supporting approximately 3,171 jobs and contributing $250.2 million to West Virginia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), including $92.1 million in labor income. Around 30% of the labor income and 42% of the GDP impact extended beyond host counties through supply chains and local labor markets. Using an expanded definition of research that includes public outreach, training, and curriculum-related grants, the analysis reveals that every $1.00 of federal research …

The Illusion Of “El Chingon”: A Scoping Review On How Machismo Affects Mental Health And Behavior, Vanessa Estrada Garza Aug 2025

The Illusion Of “El Chingon”: A Scoping Review On How Machismo Affects Mental Health And Behavior, Vanessa Estrada Garza

McNair Summer Research Program

Machismo is a set of cultural values tethered to the gender binary, defined by the specific gender roles and expectations that men have to act upon. These ideals create a male archetype based on aggression, stoicism, superiority, and the enabling of sexist attitudes. Research has shown that rigid hypermasculine attitudes have a negative effect on mental health (e.g., depression and anxiety symptoms) and behavior (e.g., aggression and substance abuse). However, given its cultural context, much less is known about how machismo may manifest based on different demographic variables. Therefore, the goal of this scoping review was to understand the relation …

Nonprofit News Public Communication Data, Nik Usher Aug 2025

Nonprofit News Public Communication Data, Nik Usher

Communication: Faculty Scholarship

This is the link to the data for:

Nonprofit news outlets have emerged as potential solutions to the market failure of for-profit journalism, particularly in local news "deserts." However, it is unclear whether digital-first nonprofit news outlets themselves are articulating their distinct value proposition to a wider public. Using an original dataset of 336 nonprofit news outlets across 45 states and Washington, D.C., we analyzed digital-first news nonprofit websites to assess public communication strategies across different geographic scopes (local, state/regional, national/international) and coverage types (investigative, explanatory/analysis, news and events). We specifically assess the presence of impact statements, evidence of financial …

Efficient Training Corpus Retrieval For Large Language Model Fine Tuning: A Case Study In Cancer., Avisha Das, Chiamaka Diala, Guocai Chen, Zhao Li, Rongbin Li, Omer Anjum, W Jim Zheng

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The objective is to create an automated knowledge extraction tool for cancer research that builds high-quality academic corpora for LLM fine-tuning while investigating its effectiveness in interleukin-6 and bladder cancer domains. To address the current gap in knowledge retrieval techniques for cancer research data collection, we propose KnowledgePipeline, a novel automated tool that incorporates diverse aspects of academic papers and metadata. Our tool integrates content, co-citations, and co-authorship networks to construct domain-specific academic corpora suitable for fine-tuning LLMs. We leverage two LLMs (GPTJ-6.7B and Galactica30B) trained on domain-specific question-answer pairs from the refined data. The system's evaluation focuses on both …

Generational Health Professional Perceptions About Artificial Intelligence Impact On Clinical Work, Karima Lalani, Kerryn Butler-Henderson, David T Marc, Susan H Fenton Aug 2025

Generational Health Professional Perceptions About Artificial Intelligence Impact On Clinical Work, Karima Lalani, Kerryn Butler-Henderson, David T Marc, Susan H Fenton

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Whilst the evidence-base related to artificial intelligence (AI) has been growing in relation to its use and impact on healthcare, there is a lack of evidence related to the health workforce impact and no research examining the generational perceptions in relation to the health workforce and AI. This paper presents the results of a survey, which found generational differences in perceptions about the impact of AI on clinical jobs. Gen Z and Millennials were more likely to agree with statements that AI will improve their clinical decision-making skills/abilities, accomplish clinical tasks more quickly, and cause unemployment in their professional occupation. …

Tracing Tremor: From Upper-Limb Neuromusculoskeletal Dynamics To Movement Signatures In Essential Tremor, Landon J. Beutler Aug 2025

Tracing Tremor: From Upper-Limb Neuromusculoskeletal Dynamics To Movement Signatures In Essential Tremor, Landon J. Beutler

Theses and Dissertations

Tremor is a common neurological condition that significantly impairs the quality of life for millions. Despite this prevalence, the underlying mechanisms of its propagation remain poorly understood, and current treatment options often rely on trial-and-error methods. Moreover, the most common type, Essential Tremor (ET), presents a unique challenge due to its heterogeneity--patients exhibit a wide range of symptoms, severities, and responses to treatment. This thesis primarily advances tremor understanding through computational modeling, with a secondary focus on data-driven subtyping of ET via cluster analysis. These parallel paths aim to improve both mechanistic insight and clinical classification. Tremor propagation refers to …

Generative Ai In Policy-Informed Insurance Adjudication: A Comparative Analysis, Emmanuel Osamau, Chun-Hua Tsai Aug 2025

Generative Ai In Policy-Informed Insurance Adjudication: A Comparative Analysis, Emmanuel Osamau, Chun-Hua Tsai

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

This paper addresses how Generative AI-mediated policy framing influences insurance outcomes and the broader adjudication ecosystem. We explore a hybrid decision-making framework that combines an XGBoost model for initial claim likelihood prediction and OpenAI’s GPT-4 for policy application. This approach is tested using two distinct policies: a contextual risk-benefit assessment (CRBA) and an equal needs and fairness evaluation (ENFE). The study specifically analyzes how GenAI’s interpretation and application under these different policy framings impact claim approval rates and associated financial liabilities. Furthermore, we examine the broader implications of integrating this AI-driven framework for multiple stakeholders involved in the adjudication process, …
