E3 Ligase Rnf145 Regulates Airway Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation Via The Pp2a-P70s6k Signaling Axis, Vijaya Kumar Gangipangi, Erin O. Curley, Deepak A. Deshpande, Pawan Sharma
Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
Airway smooth muscle (ASM) is a key determinant of airway caliber and a major contributor to structural remodeling in obstructive lung diseases, including asthma and COPD. ASM proliferation is regulated by transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms, including ubiquitin-dependent protein turnover mediated by E3 ubiquitin ligases. Here, we investigated the role of the RING-type E3 ligase RNF145 in mitogenic signaling and ASM cell proliferation. Human ASM cells were transfected with RNF145 shRNA or treated with the E3 ligase inhibitor SMER3, followed by stimulation with fetal bovine serum (FBS) or platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). RNF145 knockdown or SMER3 treatment dose-dependently inhibited mitogen-induced ASM …

Orthoflaviviruses are RNA viruses responsible for significant diseases in humans, domesticated animals, and wildlife. Their NS5 protein is central in viral replication, functioning both as an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and a methyltransferase, while also modulating cellular processes, including the interferon response. Although viral replication is cytoplasmic, the NS5 protein of several mosquito-borne orthoflaviviruses cycles between the cytoplasm and the nucleus of infected human cells. However, the nuclear localization and function of NS5 of tick-borne orthoflaviviruses, such as tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), remain poorly understood. Microscopy analysis and cell fractionation revealed that the NS5 protein of TBEV localized to both the …

Self-Regulation For Early Childhood Classrooms, Emily Fox
Self-Regulation For Early Childhood Classrooms, Emily Fox
Masters Projects
The ability to self-regulate is essential for young children's social, emotional, behavioral, and academic development. However, growing exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), toxic stress, family instability, and other social and environmental stressors has contributed to challenges in the development of these skills. Children with underdeveloped self-regulation skills are more likely to experience difficulties with executive functioning, peer relationships, classroom behavior, and school readiness, demonstrating the need for early intervention. The purpose of this master's project was to investigate the major social and environmental stressors affecting young children's self-regulation and to develop a research-based intervention to support self-regulation development in …

Grieving And Attentiveness: Perception As Flourishing In Ocean Vuong And Mary Oliver, Madison Smith
Papers
The paper argues that poets Ocean Vuong and Mary Oliver treat grief as something formative to one's life and character rather than purely destructive; through their suffering, the subject has the opportunity to cultivate a sense of attentiveness that transforms perceptions of the self, others, history, and the natural world.
This project was an output for The Belmont Formation Scholars Cohort for Character Research and Writing, which received generous support funding from The Kern Family Foundation.

We analyze data from 142 of the 218 gravitational-wave (GW) sources in the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration (LVK) Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-4.0) to estimate the Hubble constant H0 jointly with the population properties of merging compact binaries. We measure the luminosity distance and redshifted masses of GW sources directly; in contrast, we infer GW source redshifts statistically through (i) location of features in the compact object mass spectrum and merger rate evolution, and (ii) identifying potential host galaxies in the GW localization volume. Probing the relationship between source luminosity distances and redshifts obtained in this way yields constraints on cosmological parameters. …
Principles Of Endoscopic Resection For Early Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Prasit Mahawongkajit
Principles Of Endoscopic Resection For Early Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Prasit Mahawongkajit
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains a major global health burden, particularly in East and Southeast Asia, where incidence rates are highest. Early-stage ESCC represents a critical therapeutic window in which curative treatment can be achieved using minimally invasive, organ-preserving approaches. Advances in endoscopic imaging, including narrow-band imaging, magnifying endoscopy, chromoendoscopy, and emerging modalities such as endocytoscopy and artificial intelligence–assisted detection, have substantially improved the accuracy of early diagnosis and invasion depth assessment. According to current staging systems, including the AJCC/UICC classification, endoscopic resection is an established curative treatment for carefully selected patients with mucosal ESCC. Endoscopic submucosal dissection has …
Mystical Revelation And Knowledge Of God: Reclaiming Spirituality In Theology Through The Mystics, Elizabeth A. Merski
Mystical Revelation And Knowledge Of God: Reclaiming Spirituality In Theology Through The Mystics, Elizabeth A. Merski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the scholastic era, the pursuit of God has occurred preeminently through reason, leading to an imbalanced theology of God that persists to the present day in the form of intellect-centered theology. As a resolution, this work proposes that the mobilization of private, mystical revelation as a source of legitimized theological knowledge of God has the potential to close the existent epistemological gap between reason/belief and theology/spirituality, demonstrating the integral unity between authentic knowledge of God and the receiver’s personal acceptance of God in faith. After examining the required methodological components for the discipline of theology and identifying criteria for …
Beyond The Pencil: Creating Early Writers, Pamela L. Gernaat
Beyond The Pencil: Creating Early Writers, Pamela L. Gernaat
Masters Projects
“Schools in many countries are faced with the challenge of developing student writing proficiency. Identifying and implementing effective writing instruction for young, beginning writers play important roles in improving student writing performance. Providing effective writing instruction to beginning writers can promote writing development and minimize the number of children who encounter challenges in learning to write” (Finlayson & McCrudden, 2022, p. 1). Despite the amount of research that has been done on the importance of early writing instruction, many lower elementary students struggle with the ability to write and cannot keep up with the cognitive demands of written instruction. Many …

The Mathematics Of Calendar Patterns: Day-Of-Week Phenomena, Number Patterns, And Recreational Investigations, Vijender Nallapu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Calendars are among the most familiar mathematical structures encountered in everyday life. Beyond their practical use in organizing dates and measuring time, calendars contain a rich collection of numerical patterns, symmetries, and arithmetic relationships. Many of these patterns can be explored using only elementary mathematics, making calendars an attractive subject for recreational investigation and mathematical enrichment.
In this article we examine several mathematical properties arising from the structure of monthly calendars. We investigate arithmetic patterns associated with rows, columns, and rectangular blocks of dates, establish properties of calendar squares, and explore connections with modular arithmetic through day-of-week calculations. We also …

Vedic Mathematics And Mental Computation: Fast Multiplication Techniques, Algebraic Foundations, And Historical Perspectives, Rakesh Bhatia, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Mental computation has fascinated mathematicians, educators, and students for centuries. Various computational techniques allow arithmetic calculations to be performed rapidly without the use of calculators or computers. Among these methods, several popular techniques are associated with what is commonly known as Vedic Mathematics. In this article, we examine a collection of fast multiplication techniques, including multiplication near powers of ten, multiplication by eleven, squaring numbers ending in five, and the vertical-and-crosswise method. For each technique, we provide elementary mathematical explanations based on algebraic identities and place-value representations.
Hidden Symmetries Of The Classical 3×3 Magic Square, Vijender Nallapu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
Hidden Symmetries Of The Classical 3×3 Magic Square, Vijender Nallapu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The classical 3×3 magic square is one of the most famous objects in recreational mathematics. Its defining feature is that every row, every column, and the two main diagonals have the same sum. However, beyond this well-known property, the square contains several hidden symmetries involving rotations, reflections, complementary pairs, parity, and balance around the central entry. In this article, we present an elementary exploration of these symmetries and show how the classical magic square provides a beautiful introduction to mathematical structure and pattern recognition.

Curious Patterns And Identities Involving Consecutive Integers, Carlo Cattani, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Consecutive integers exhibit numerous surprising patterns and elegant identities. In this article, we investigate several classical properties involving products, sums, divisibility, perfect squares, cubes, pronic numbers, triangular numbers, sums of squares, and Pythagorean triples. Using only elementary algebra, symmetry arguments, and mathematical induction, we establish a collection of identities that reveal rich connections among these classical topics. The exposition is intended for students, teachers, and recreational mathematicians, illustrating how simple observations about consecutive integers can lead to beautiful mathematical patterns and deeper insights into elementary number theory.

How We Benefit From Job Satisfaction: The Moderating Effect Of Informal Caregiving On The Associations Between Job Satisfaction And Physiological And Psychological Stress, Jensine Paoletti-Hatcher, Vincent D. Lai, Christopher P. Fagundes
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Job satisfaction and the resource-building processes it supports may have meaningful implications for health and well-being. These processes may work differently for employees who have informal (i.e., unpaid) caregiving duties outside of work. Guided by conservation of resources theory, we examined two indirect stress-buffering pathways in a sample of 799 nursing home workers, measured four times over 18 months. We tested how job satisfaction affects gain strengthening (via higher positive spillover) and loss weakening (via lower work-family conflict), how these processes impact indices of physiological (i.e., C-reactive protein) and psychological (i.e., perceived) stress, and how informal caregiving status may moderate …

Measuring The Tokenization Premium: A Cost Audit For Underserved Language Communities, Avijit Roy, Proma Roy, Hrishitva Patel
Publications and Research
Large language models are increasingly deployed as general-purpose educational and technical assistance systems, but their basic infrastructure does not treat languages equally. One underexamined source of disparity is tokenization: semantically equivalent content can require substantially different token counts across languages, affecting API cost, latency, and usable context length before a model is even invoked. We introduce the Tokenization Equity Audit (TEA), a reproducible benchmark for measuring tokenization premiums in technical tutoring content. TEA evaluates three widely used tokenizers, GPT-4o’s o200k base, Qwen2.5-7B, and Mistral-7B, on a 120-item Python debugging corpus translated from English into Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, Tamil, and Yoruba. …

Background: Heart failure (HF) represents the final common pathway of diverse cardiovascular disorders, including coronary artery disease, primary myocardial pathology, and abnormalities of cardiac conduction. These conditions arise from an interplay of genetic, environmental, and psychosocial influences, making it essential to understand these determinants to improve risk prediction and prevention. Multiple biological pathways of inflammation, fibrosis, coagulation, oxidative stress, lipid dysregulation, endothelial dysfunction, and metabolic disturbances are shaped by inherited susceptibility and modifiable exposures. Together, these mechanisms drive HF development and progression, though their relative contributions vary across populations. Methods: PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for clinical, biomedical, and …

Effective Visibility In The Infrared Bands, Peter L. Dean-Erlander, Steven T. Fiorino, Ronald G. Driggers
Faculty Publications
Visibility is an atmospheric metric for the comparison of terrestrial imaging conditions and locations. A limitation of visibility is that it is defined for the visible spectrum only, and there is no simple infrared equivalent. This study compares three reflective infrared wavebands: near-IR (NIR), shortwave IR (SWIR), and extended shortwave IR (eSWIR), to the visible band across a global set of cities to develop three rule-of-thumb functions for IR effective visibility. To accomplish this, a radiometric sensor model is combined with the Laser Environmental Effects Definition and Reference (LEEDR) software package to calculate the visibility of a black-and-white contrast target …

Melatonin In Pediatric Critical Care: From Physiology To Bedside Roles, Chanapai Chaiyakulsil
Melatonin In Pediatric Critical Care: From Physiology To Bedside Roles, Chanapai Chaiyakulsil
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Melatonin is an endogenous indoleamine synthesized by the pineal gland. Though melatonin is best known for its chronobiologic effects, regulating the circadian rhythm and sleep, it might play a wider role in critical illness. It has been proposed for use as an analgesic and sedative, an antihypertensive, an anti-inflammatory, and for the prevention of delirium. Melatonin use in children has increased dramatically over the years, but the evidence on its use in critically ill children remains limited. This review article aimed to describe the basic physiology and biology of melatonin, including its production and functions, dosing, and side effects, …

Corruption In The Service Of The Common Good: The Legitimation Of Traditional Practitioners In Cameroon, Victorine Oyane Ossah
Journal of Law and Public Policy
This article shows how health law and public policy, in seeking to regulate traditional medicine, without fully recognising it, paradoxically end up producing the very social conditions for the corruption that they are supposed to combat. The aim is to identify, based on the experience of traditional healers, the various factors that contribute to establishing corruption not as a moral choice, but as a pragmatic strategy for preserving their knowledge, resources, and place in the healthcare system. Euscorpius
Euscorpius vailatii Tropea & Fet, 2015 (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae), originally described from Aitoloakarnania and Fokida (Greece), is herein reported from Trizonia Island in the Gulf of Corinth, representing the first insular record for the species. The examined specimens are consistent with the diagnostic morphology of E. vailatii. The first molecular data for the species are provided, based on both mainland and insular populations. Comparative analyses further highlight the distinctiveness of E. vailatii from geographically close congeners, while phylogenetic results indicate a sister-taxon relationship with E. erymanthius, supporting a Quaternary biogeographic history shaped by the evolution of the Gulf of …

Abstract
Background: The following quality improvement project was performed in a 20-bed Neuro/Medical ICU in a large urban hospital in Northern California. Assessments with the IHI Clinical Microsystem Assessment Tool and the 5 P's framework indicated that the ICU had good practices in place to manage physiologic decompensation of ICU patients, but no practices to prevent delirium in those patients.
Problem: Delirium is associated with increased mortality rates for ICU patients, increased use of ICU ventilators, longer lengths of stay in the ICU, and long-term cognitive impairments (Devlin et al., 2018). The prevalence of delirium in patients who …
