"The Biggest Outing Of The Year": Hops, Harvest, And The Making Of Oregon's Largest Annual Gathering, 1880-1930, Asher Bernick-Roehr
University Honors Theses
When the end of August came around, all kinds of people started rolling into the little town of Independence, Oregon. Some walked, some came by train, others by wagon, and still others by ferry, motorboat, and canoe. There were Armenians, Swedes, Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Russians, Germans, and Indigenous peoples. There were those who were called fruit tramps, individuals and families who managed to bridge the vast distances across the West to harvest whichever crop needed hands. Entire families arrived, young and old, healthy and sick, with horses, mules, chickens and dogs in tow. Rich men came dressed as poor men …

Lung Cancer Mortality Trends In Brazil: Implications For Health Policy And Resource Allocation, Mariana Oliveira Santos, Rafael Almeida Costa, Camila Ferreira Barbosa
Muthanna Medical Journal
Background: Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer mortality in Brazil, with patterns shaped by historical tobacco use, environmental exposures, and disparities in healthcare access. While overall smoking prevalence has declined markedly, the impact on mortality rates varies by sex and region.
Objective: To analyze national trends in lung cancer mortality in Brazil from 1996 to 2023, assess sex- and region-specific patterns, and discuss implications for public health policy and resource allocation.
Methods: This ecological time-trend study used age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) for lung cancer (ICD-10 codes C33–C34) obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM/DATASUS) and population data from …

RESEARCH QUESTION: Can generative artificial intelligence (AI) models provide reliable counselling to fertility patients regarding real-world clinical questions?
DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, 12 clinical questions were developed to reflect common, real-life dilemmas encountered during fertility workup and treatment. Responses to each question were generated by two experienced fertility specialists, and two AI models - ChatGPT and Gemini. Eight leading internationally recognized fertility experts, blinded to the source of each reply, independently rated all the responses on a scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 10 (strongly agree). Ratings were compared across all four repliers using non-parametric statistical tests.
RESULTS: The …

A Qualitative Analysis Of How Just Stop Oil Protests Are Framed In The Uk Online News Media, Holly Handy
A Qualitative Analysis Of How Just Stop Oil Protests Are Framed In The Uk Online News Media, Holly Handy
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Previous research has found that when the news media reports on demonstrations, protest groups can be subject to delegitimising coverage. This body of research can be subsumed under Chan & Lee’s “protest paradigm” and is believed to consist of a set of narrative frames that journalists default to in the coverage of protests. Recent research demonstrates how the use of these framing devices may be in decline and advocates for a more integrated approach to protest coverage. However, there is little research that uses analytic frameworks specifically theorised to explore media framing. This study uses Giles and Shaw’s media framing …
The Cost Of Capital Calculation In The Project Finance Settings, Paweł Mielcarz, Dmytro Osiichuk, Adrian Struciński
The Cost Of Capital Calculation In The Project Finance Settings, Paweł Mielcarz, Dmytro Osiichuk, Adrian Struciński
Journal of Banking and Financial Economics
The paper aims at elucidating and solving the methodological problems around the estimation of the cost of capital in the project finance settings. By convention, capital budgeting analysts evaluate project finance ventures using the free cash flow for equity (FCFE) method, whereby cash flows, including cash, whose distribution is limited by debt covenants, are discounted with the project’s cost of equity. We argue that this approach is erroneous. From the standpoint of the sponsor company, only distributable cash flows should be taken into consideration when evaluating project finance ventures. In turn, the discount rate should be equal to the weighted …

Background: HIV stigma is a huge impediment to ending the HIV epidemic. To develop effective HIV interventions, we must determine factors associated with HIV stigma, particularly among high-risk groups like people who inject drugs (PWID). We aimed to identify predictors of perceived HIV stigma (PHS) among a sample of PWID from 23 U.S. cities.
Methods: We analyzed the 2018 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance data on PWID aged ≥ 18 years. PHS was assessed using a validated survey that measured four PHS constructs: perceived unfriendliness, perceived discrimination, perceived punishment, and perceived support. We created a composite PHS index score by summing …

Jurnal Epidemiologi Kesehatan Indonesia
Stunting is still a nutritional problem and remains a major public health issue. Especially in Indonesia, the prevalence of stunting among children under two years old (toddlers) remains high, at 18.50%. The annual average rate of reduction of stunting among toddlers has been relatively slow for over the past 10 years. Therefore, optimizing stunting interventions-particularly during the first 1000 days of life is essential, including through antenatal care (ANC). This study aims to analyze the relationship between the quality of antenatal care and the incidence of stunting among children aged 6-23 months-old in Indonesia, after being controlled by the other …

France embraces diversity in terms of religion, race, and ethnicity in its society. The arrival of migrants and foreigners, especially in the post-Second World War period contributed to France’s current demographic landscape. In dealing with the influx of population, France has adopted various immigration policies, as stated on the website of the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas, but has not significantly improved the current situation. As the immigration issue has continuously become prominent in French society, this research takes on comparing the policies carried by the governments of François Hollande and Emmanuel Macron on the issue while also taking …

The Merdeka Curriculum, introduced as a new educational initiative in Indonesia, faces several challenges identified in recent studies. This study employed a literature analysis method to evaluate data from relevant articles published between 2021 and 2023. The findings highlight several major issues in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum. First, inadequate educational infrastructure, including a shortage of suitable classrooms and limited access to technology, remains a significant challenge. Second, strengthening teachers’ capacity to integrate technology into instruction is crucial because the Merdeka Curriculum relies heavily on technology-based approaches. Effective learning assessment is also a key concern and requires a holistic, process-oriented approach. …

“Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) has reshaped consumer spending behaviors, with Malaysia experiencing a significant surge in adoption and usage. BNPL is widely used by Gen-Z and millennials as a form of payment, leading to increased spending due to this borrowing scheme. It has introduced a shift in consumer spending patterns, often characterized by the ‘Buy Now, Think Later?’ mindset. Due to the rising popularity of BNPL schemes, Bank Negara Malaysia is looking to amend the Consumer Credit Act. As BNPL schemes often synthetically promote positive payment behaviors through readily available installment credit options, many consumers seem to adopt a …

Throughout history, travel narratives have taken up various forms and served various purposes. The changes of forms and functions were influenced by the spirit of the age. Today, in the contemporary digital era, social media platforms like Instagram have transformed travel narratives into stories combining images and texts that significantly impact public attitude on travel and tourism. On certain occasions, Instagram travel narratives contribute to the dangerous trend of mass tourism, although there are moments when the same travel writing form advocates sustainability. This study investigates the extent to which travel narratives by prominent Indonesian travel influencers on Instagram advocate …
