How Can Indigenous Peoples Be Meaningfully Integrated Into National Climate Decision Making Processes?, Shahd Wael Sep 2025

How Can Indigenous Peoples Be Meaningfully Integrated Into National Climate Decision Making Processes?, Shahd Wael

COP30

Indigenous people manage significant global terrestrial surface while simultaneously guarding around 80% of the world's biodiversity (With methodological uncertainty), despite only comprising a small fraction of the global population.Their traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) supports essential climate solutions and helps in the adaptation and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. A significant depth of injustice, however, and security risk in the existing climate governance mechanisms is pronounced given that less than 1% of direct global climate finance is allocated to indigenous peoples. This policy paper argues that a transformational paradigm shift needs to take place for global climate action to be effective, …

Criminalising Ecocide For Climate Justice And Global Security, Norain El Gebely Sep 2025

Criminalising Ecocide For Climate Justice And Global Security, Norain El Gebely

COP30

The climate emergency is deepening and needs urgent attention involving radical, binding, and multilateral measures. Ecocide is the large-scale and deliberate destruction of ecosystems which undermines human security, destabilizes the fragile states and increases geopolitical tensions. It has been contended in this policy brief that ecocide needs to be internationally criminalized pursuant to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to place environmental destruction firmly within the scope of global peace and security. The proposals promote climate justice by prioritizing certain countries, which include Equatorial countries, industrializing high emission countries and the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through …

Mapping Nonprofit Data Accessibility In Latin American Countries: Early Insights From An Exploratory Comparative Study, Angie Holzer, Tania Hernandez, Ted Gray Barnes Jr, Noah Ellis, Sumasri Jasti, Hannah Chu, Nithin Kumar, Evan Campione, Louis Ye, Quoc Thai Dinh

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

This paper presents findings from a global study of nonprofit data accessibility, focusing on Mexico and other Latin American countries. The analysis explores whether nonprofit databases exist, who operates them, what accessibility barriers are present, what requirements nonprofits must meet to register, and what registration costs they face. Using an exploratory comparative design, the study highlights both cross-country similarities and differences while situating nonprofit data systems within broader theories of transparency, accountability, and open-data governance.

Early insights reveal that about 70% of countries in Latin America maintain nonprofit registries, yet accessibility, usability, requirements, and costs vary widely. Registration processes range …

How Civil Society Organizations Build Resilience In The Face Of Financial And Political Pressures: Lessons From Czechia, Hungary, And Bulgaria, Merrill Sovner Sep 2025

How Civil Society Organizations Build Resilience In The Face Of Financial And Political Pressures: Lessons From Czechia, Hungary, And Bulgaria, Merrill Sovner

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

How are some civil society organizations (CSOs) able to pivot and innovate in the face of political hostility and funding withdrawal, while others shrink or become inactive? It posits that it’s not just the external environment, funding, or degree of political pressure, but attributes intrinsic to each CSO that narrows the range of possible responses. It is based on sample of CSOs in Czechia, Hungary and Bulgaria that faced political pressures and funding withdrawal between 2010 and 2019. CSOs responded in three ways: reduced staff and expenditures, replaced lost funding while operating in a similar way, or reframed their work, …

Property Rights In The Face Of Historic Injustice, Bas Van Der Vossen, Fabian Wendt Sep 2025

Property Rights In The Face Of Historic Injustice, Bas Van Der Vossen, Fabian Wendt

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

It seems natural to adopt a historical approach when it comes to property titles: When property titles have a clean history, they are to be respected as a matter of justice; when they do not have a clean history, for example, in cases of prior theft, they must be returned to the original owners or their descendants. But the historical approach has serious drawbacks. This paper presents an alternative. Starting from the idea that property rights must be stable, we offer an account of why historic injustices sometimes do, but sometimes do not, undermine current titles. This account offers a …

Cultural Dynamics And Reverse Culture Shock: A Strategy For Building Sustainable Human Resources In International Ngos, Haruka Minemura, Yuko Nishide Sep 2025

Cultural Dynamics And Reverse Culture Shock: A Strategy For Building Sustainable Human Resources In International Ngos, Haruka Minemura, Yuko Nishide

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

This study explores the dynamics of cultural conflict between expatriate and local staff in international NGOs (INGOs) and proposes a framework for sustainable human resource management. While existing INGO management literature emphasizes cultural factors in expatriate-local relations, limited empirical evidence explains the developmental process of these relationships and their implications. Through qualitative case study methodology, this research addresses the question: How do cultural conflicts between expatriates and local staff evolve within INGOs, and what management strategies emerge from these dynamics?

The findings reveal a dual-phase conflict management model where both expatriates and local staff experience sequential cultural tensions. The first …

Memoir On A General Property Of A Very Extensive Class Of Transcendental Functions, Niels Henrik Abel 1802--1829, John Little Sep 2025

Memoir On A General Property Of A Very Extensive Class Of Transcendental Functions, Niels Henrik Abel 1802--1829, John Little

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship

We present this new commentary and translation anticipating the 200th anniversary of the work, commonly known as Abel's ``Paris memoir.'' This is recognized today as one of Abel's most original and influential works. It is significant mostly because it marked the first appearance of a form of a result in the theory of algebraic curves and Riemann surfaces that has come to be known as ``Abel's theorem.'' However, Abel's original understanding of the meaning and context of his result was quite different from the typical modern formulation and the development of the modern understanding has been a long and tortuous …

From Silence To Evidence: Strengthening Media Reporting Protocols To Codify Ecocide In War Zones, Rodina Alaa Sep 2025

From Silence To Evidence: Strengthening Media Reporting Protocols To Codify Ecocide In War Zones, Rodina Alaa

COP30

Ecocide, or the intentional destruction of environmental annihilation during wars, attacks important ecosystems, like forests, rivers, and agricultural lands, and has long-term negative impacts on both nature and human life. Although the media could be an agent on the frontlines of preventing and exposing such crimes, fragmented reporting standards, suppression of journalists, and absence of coordinating mechanisms weaken its effectiveness. Based on two case studies, Ukraine, where citizen-driven platforms such as EcoZagroza have allowed real-time evidence to be documented, and Gaza, where journalists are the targeted victims in an attempt to erase any evidence about the environment, this paper demonstrates …

Climate Justice Across Borders: Responding To Ecocide And Displacement, Camila Micheletti Flores Sep 2025

Climate Justice Across Borders: Responding To Ecocide And Displacement, Camila Micheletti Flores

COP30

This policy paper examines how climate change accelerates cross-border displacement, especially in regions most vulnerable to ecocide and environmental degradation. Climate refugees remain unprotected under international law, as the 1951 Refugee Convention excludes environmental grounds for asylum, leaving populations exposed to human rights violations and securitized responses. It analyzes legal and institutional gaps, highlighting failures in global climate governance and the disproportionate risks faced by SIDS and other affected regions. The paper calls for COP30 to mandate a high-level UNFCCC forum on climate displacement and ecocide to build a just, cooperative, and rights-based international framework.

Gender-Based Violence In A Warming World: Advancing Mitigation And Adaptation Through Gender-Responsive Climate Policies, Salsa Putri Sihombing Sep 2025

Gender-Based Violence In A Warming World: Advancing Mitigation And Adaptation Through Gender-Responsive Climate Policies, Salsa Putri Sihombing

COP30

Climate change, accelerating across multiple dimensions, creates disproportionate environmental costs which primarily affect women, children, gender diverse people and other marginalized groups. Research evidence shows that climate stressors create more vulnerability for women and girls because they lead to increased gender-based violence (GBV) through population movements, resource shortages, and institutional breakdowns. This policy paper examines the intersectionality between GBV and climate change to help governments, donors, and civil society organizations establish gender justice and GBV prevention as essential components of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. The evidence from Mozambique, India, and Uganda shows essential policy and financial gaps. Policy recommendations …

Holding Transnational Corporations Accountable For Ecocide And Climate-Related Human Rights Violations, Njengue Cindy Joanne Sep 2025

Holding Transnational Corporations Accountable For Ecocide And Climate-Related Human Rights Violations, Njengue Cindy Joanne

COP30

The climate emergency and the scale of environmental harm require moving beyond voluntary and overly localized approaches to establish binding legal mechanisms at the global level. Transnational corporations operating in high-impact ecological sectors must be held accountable for their actions — not only to remedy the damage caused, but also to prevent future violations. COP30 in Belém presents a unique opportunity to place legal and institutional accountability at the core of international negotiations. By building on existing instruments, the ethical ambitions of the COP presidency, and strengthened cooperation between states, civil society, and private actors, it is possible to construct …

Formalizing Judicial Accountability And Advancing Ecocide Law At Cop30, Ratania Edawi Sep 2025

Formalizing Judicial Accountability And Advancing Ecocide Law At Cop30, Ratania Edawi

COP30

The escalating climate crisis increasingly intersects with profound issues of justice, human rights, and planetary survival, bringing urgency to the concept of ecocide. Despite mounting ecological degradation, transnational corporate actors frequently evade accountability, often shielded by mechanisms like Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) systems that prioritize profit over people and the planet. This policy paper argues for the formalization of judicial accountability in global climate governance and the advancement of ecocide law under international frameworks. It highlights the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding environmental and human rights, particularly in the face of political inertia. Building on the ethical imperative …

Indigenous Communities Carbon Sovereignty: A Protocol For Climate Justice, Ecocide Prevention, And Security, Lojain Waleed Sep 2025

Indigenous Communities Carbon Sovereignty: A Protocol For Climate Justice, Ecocide Prevention, And Security, Lojain Waleed

COP30

This policy paper examines the Climate justice, Ecocide and security implications of carbon market mechanisms for Indigenous Peoples (IPs). Despite global recognition of Indigenous people participation , existing frameworks under the UNFCCC and mechanisms often lack enforceable safeguards to protect Indigenous sovereignty. The paper identifies critical gaps in governance, particularly the absence of Indigenous-led oversight in Carbon markets. Drawing on two case studies: Yurok Tribe and Ogiek people, it demonstrates how carbon markets can reproduce neo-colonial patterns of resource appropriation. To address these challenges, the paper proposes the Indigenous communities Carbon Sovereignty Protocol (ICCSP) as a governance framework, outlining implementation …

Addressing The Abuse Of Monopsony Power In Labor Markets: Examining Potential Public And Civil Law Remedies And Sanctions, Zofia M. Mazur Sep 2025

Addressing The Abuse Of Monopsony Power In Labor Markets: Examining Potential Public And Civil Law Remedies And Sanctions, Zofia M. Mazur

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

Although thousands of reported cases involve allegations of firms illegally forming cartels in product markets, relatively few deal with similar allegations in labor markets. Moreover, as observed in legal doctrine, labor markets tend to be more concentrated than product markets and, consequently, more susceptible to anticompetitive conducts by undertakings. The article, therefore, analyzes the so-called monopsony power in the labor market, which refers to any case where employers hold labor market power that allows them to unilaterally determine wages or to worsen working conditions by reducing employment.

It is argued that competition law should be used to effectively curb abuse …

College of Health Professions Faculty Papers

AIMS: Progressive legalization of medical and recreational cannabis markets at the state-level has led to rapid growth of medical and recreational cannabis markets and to product diversification with emerging products having high concentrations of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Research on these products is still limited and the evidence available for policy formulation is diminished by methodological limitations.

METHODS: As a step towards addressing these limitations, the Colorado School of Public Health convened a multidisciplinary workshop that addressed four areas of cannabis research: epidemiological, clinical, surveillance, and policy. Workshop participants provided recommendations in each area to advance research on cannabis to make it more …

Where Can We Share The Impactful Work Of Applied, Practicing Statisticians?, Emily Griffith, Michiko Wolcott, Robyn L Ball, Julia Sharp

Faculty Research 2025

Avenues for disseminating work by applied and collaborative statisticians to statistical audiences are extremely limited. Methodological advances made in the course of effectively executing applied work often fail to reach an audience of other practicing statisticians. We consider questions posed from several viewpoints, including as members of the professional community in academia, government, industry, and independent statistical consulting. We highlight key challenges and opportunities that exist in this space and start the discussion to examine pathways to share this important work. We conclude with recommendations for possible next steps for the dissemination of impactful work by applied, practicing statisticians.

Chamber Music Instruction: Reflections From Online Teaching During The Covid-19 Lockdown, Sethapong Janyarayachon, Komsun Dilokkunanant

Journal of Education Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic led to lockdown measures worldwide, including in Thailand. As a result, the traditional approach to chamber music instruction at Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music had to be adapted into an online format during the 2021 and 2022 academic years. This unprecedented situation prompted a reassessment of conventional chamber music teaching strategies and the development of an entirely new instructional plan to address the unique challenges of online delivery. Consequently, it became necessary to re-examine the expected learning outcomes to ensure that students could continue to develop chamber music skills through online instruction despite lockdown conditions. The …
