The Taxonomy And Origins Of Folia: A Brief Review, Donald G. Davis, Louise D. Hose, Harvey R. Duchene
The Taxonomy And Origins Of Folia: A Brief Review, Donald G. Davis, Louise D. Hose, Harvey R. Duchene
International Journal of Speleology
All folia demonstrate a few common elements: folia (singular, folium) are planar or sub-planar speleothems, slanting downward and away from cave walls and ceilings, and genetically associated with fluctuating environmental interfaces. They were first identified and named from examples in western USA hypogenic caves but have since been identified elsewhere in the world. Folia shelves are typically composed of calcite and interweave smoothly along sub-horizontal contours. Calcite accretion, both chemical and mechanical from suspended particles, follows water-surface fluctuations to form protrusions in arrays along walls and ceilings where new accretion tends to follow the water-surface downward during descending phases, gradually …

Engagement By Design: Belongingness, Cultural Value Orientations, And Pathways Into Emerging Technologies, Daisuke Akiba, Michael Perrone, Caterina Almendral, Rebecca Garte
Publications and Research
This theoretical article examines how belongingness, defined as the sense that one’s participation is legitimate and valued, interacts with cultural value orientations to help explain persistent disparities in U.S. technology engagement, including emerging technologies, across racial and ethnic groups. While structural barriers (e.g., racism, poverty, linguistic bias, etc.) remain essential to understanding such inequity, we argue that engagement patterns in technology also reflect how different cultural communities may define and experience belongingness in relation to digital domains. Drawing on Triandis and Gelfand’s framework, and focusing specifically on educational contexts, we propose the Belongingness through Cultural Value Alignment (BCVA) model, whereby …

Synergistic Effects Of Nano-Additives And Aggregate Type On The Mechanical And Hydraulic Performance Of Pervious Concrete Pavements, Rayan Khalid Rahman, Jamal I. Kakrasul
Polytechnic Journal
Increasing demands for sustainable urban infrastructure have made pervious concrete emerge as a promising pavement material due to its ability to combine load-bearing capacity with stormwater infiltration. This paper explores the synergetic effect of nanomaterials on the mechanical, hydraulic and durability characteristics of pervious concrete made with three different coarse aggregates: crushed limestone (CL), river aggregate (RA), and recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Twelve concrete mixes were prepared using varying combinations of nano-modified mixes to investigate their influence on key properties, including dry density, void content, compressive strength, tensile strength, permeability and abrasion resistance. The results showed that river aggregate …

Take In Case Of Emergency: Reconciling Necessity Takings With The Original Meaning Of The Takings Clause, Tony Smith
Take In Case Of Emergency: Reconciling Necessity Takings With The Original Meaning Of The Takings Clause, Tony Smith
Northwestern University Law Review
Does the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause permit the state to destroy property without compensation whenever it declares an emergency? The long-standing doctrine of necessity empowers the state to do exactly that.
Courts dating back to common law England have permitted governments to claim a privilege of necessity to avoid paying for private property they destroy in times of crisis. The privilege rests on the principle that the public good sometimes outweighs the harm the individual suffers. Today’s courts and academics stretch this principle to its limits, arguing necessity should be used as a vehicle for combating all manner of social …

Who Puts The "Support" In Supportive Housing? The Relationship Between Housing Staff Support And Resident Experiences, And The Potential Moderating Role Of Self-Determination, Kenna E. Dickard, Greg Townley
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The provision of residential and community‐based services for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) has become increasingly important following the deinstitutionalization movement. Much of the existing research on supportive housing focuses on housing outcomes rather than exploring how the program helps its residents thrive in the broader community. This study draws upon data collected from 176 people with SMI residing in 16 supportive housing locations in Portland, Oregon. Analyses explore how housing staff support relates to residents' loneliness (interpersonal level), residential satisfaction (housing and neighborhood level), and sense of community (community level). Staff support was found to be related to …

Background: The recent phase II randomized stereotactic ablative radiotherapy with and without immunotherapy (I-SABR) trial has shown improved event-free survival (EFS) when adding immunotherapy to stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for early-stage inoperable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, optimizing patient selection thereof is critical, because not every patient benefits from immunotherapy. Leveraging the powerful use of artificial intelligence, this secondary analysis of the I-SABR trial developed a modeling system (named "I-SABR-SELECT") based on clinical and radiomic factors to address which patients should receive additional immunotherapy.
Methods: The discovery/validation cohorts were from the I-SABR trial, with external validation from the single-arm …
Moving Beyond Traditional Legal Scholarship Impact Rankings, John Cannan
Moving Beyond Traditional Legal Scholarship Impact Rankings, John Cannan
Faculty Publications
Legal academia is likely stuck with law faculty scholarly impact rankings—that is, using citation counts to judge a law faculty’s reputation and influence. But why can’t we produce better, more useful studies? Current rankings rely on outdated methods. Moreover, these rankings—touted by their creators as objective—suffer from long-standing flaws.
