Tolerating Ambiguity: Counselor Educators' Perceptions Of Gatekeeping Administration, Matthew W. Bonner, Hsin-Ya Tang, Nathaniel Brown, Keenan Eldridge
Tolerating Ambiguity: Counselor Educators' Perceptions Of Gatekeeping Administration, Matthew W. Bonner, Hsin-Ya Tang, Nathaniel Brown, Keenan Eldridge
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
In the counseling profession, gatekeeping is a legal, ethical, and accreditation mandate. Academic and clinical standards are straightforward about the significance of gatekeeping. However, there is a lack of clarity regarding counselor dispositions, policies, procedures, and processes for gatekeeping. This study explores the dispositional, interpersonal, and intrapersonal experiences of faculty in their engagement with the phenomenon of gatekeeping through the qualitative approach of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) with 12 (N = 12) diverse counselor educators. Findings indicate counselor educators’ significant experiences with vague dispositions, relationships, engagement of counselors-in-raining (CITs), supportive feedback, and faculty anxiety.

Wave Impacts On Vertical Cliffs: Insights From Laboratory Experiments And Field Observations, Yaxiong Shen, Colin N. Whittaker, Catriona F. Thompson, Alison C. Raby, Adam P. Young, Mark E. Dickson

Many engineered and natural coastal structures suffer frequent damage from wave impacts. Motivated by field observations of wave impacts on coastal cliffs, we undertake controlled physical experiments with synchronised measurements of wave properties and their impacts on a vertical structure representing a cliff. Laboratory experiments using focused wave groups show that, in the investigated scenarios, large impacts occur within a relatively narrow phase range (−30° to 35°), covering ∼20% of the full phase range. Our irregular wave experiments indicate that ∼30% of waves break onto or near the cliff face, although not all these breaking waves result in large impacts. …

Forecasting Monthly Rainfall In The Pirmam Area, Kurdistan Region, Iraq: A Machine Learning Approach., Sakar Muhamad, Rawshan Ali
Polytechnic Journal
Agriculture, emergency preparedness, and water resource management all depend on accurate rainfall forecasts. This study investigates how well machine learning models predict monthly rainfall in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, specifically in the Pirmam area. Historical weather data was analyzed using a variety of models, such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), Elastic Net (ELNET), and Ridge Regression. Statistical measures including Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), Mean Bias Error (MBE), Normalized Root Mean Squared Error (nRMSE), Coefficient of Determination (R2), and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) were …

Estrogen-Related Receptor Alpha Promotes Skeletal Muscle Regeneration And Mitigates Muscular Dystrophy, Thi Thu Hao Nguyen, Ya Xiang Huang, Svitlana Poliakova, Citu Citu, Eira Mann, Danesh H Sopariwala, Zhongming Zhao, Ashok Kumar, Vihang A Narkar
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Skeletal muscle regeneration in chronic muscle diseases such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) has remained clinically unsurmountable. Estrogen‐related receptor alpha (ERRα) plays a critical role in adult skeletal muscle metabolism and exercise fitness. Whether ERRα activation can drive muscle regeneration and mitigate dystrophy in DMD is not known. We have investigated ERRα signaling in pre‐clinical models of acute muscle injury and DMD. ERRα is induced in differentiating C2C12 myoblast and regenerating muscle. ERRα silencing suppressed proliferation and differentiation in C2C12 myoblasts. RNA sequencing revealed that angiogenic factor and proliferation genes were downregulated by ERRα knockdown in proliferating cells, whereas oxidative …

Building Swimming Skills In A Community Based Program For Black Youth: An Evaluation, Tyler Lennon Md, Mph, Ashley Hayes Mph, Leonardo Barrera Mph, Amy Hill Ms, Mph, Andy Miner, Michelle Macy Md, Ms
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Black youth in the United States disproportionately experience fatal drowning at rates up to five times higher than their white peers. Eliminating these inequities requires new approaches that address historical and structural barriers of learning to swim. The objective of this study was to evaluate the three-week long swimming component of a community-based discovery program to empower Black youth in Evanston, IL. Participants were Black youth ages 8-10 years enrolled in summer 2023 and 2024. Swim skills were assessed by instructors using the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Water Competence (PSPWC). Caregiver surveys, collected post-intervention, also assessed perceived changes in swim …

This article explains how developers and users of large language models (LMs) may be treated by English and Canadian libel law. LMs could be economically significant, and the liability environment they exist in will affect where they are developed, who accumulates wealth from their development, and who bears the burdens of any negative consequences of their development. Understanding the existing liability environment allows both developers and policy makers to make informed decisions—about which jurisdiction to offer services and what to prioritise, for the former, and about whether the existing law serves desired policy ends, for the latter. LMs also raise …

Sex Discrimination, Assimilation, And Austerity: The Untold Story Of Canada’S Indian Act, 1975-1985, Genevieve Renard Painter
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article is about the misunderstood history of a Canadian law for determining Indian status, the decades-long struggle to remedy sex discrimination in the law, and the significance of judges writing history. Since before Canada’s confederation until amendments to the Indian Act in 1985, Indian women, unlike Indian men, lost their Indian status if they married non-Indians. Even with the 1985 amendments, the law still disadvantaged people who traced their Indian status along the female line. Facing a challenge to the law based on sex discrimination, the government argued that the enduring disadvantage to women was the only way to …

Disambiguating The Wrongs Of Racial Profiling In Policing And Championing Their Structural Remediation: A Reply, François Tanguay-Renaud
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
CANADIAN LAW JOURNALS have never been known for going out of their way to facilitate direct conversations between legal scholars working on cognate issues. However, if there is anything to the old liberal adage that the truth is more likely to emerge from the civil yet robust debating of competing ideas, the lack of opportunities for holders of rival views to respond, in real time, to each other’s arguments is deplorable. Therefore, I wish to commend the Osgoode Hall Law Journal for convening this timely scholarly exchange on the problematic phenomenon of racial profiling in Canadian policing and, more specifically, …
