Thermo-Mechanical Behaviour Of A Long-Span Precast Industrial Building, Marco Bizzozero, Francesco Daniele, Bruno Dal Lago

UBT International Conference

Fire safety in precast concrete industrial buildings is a key concern in structural engineering due to their complex thermo-mechanical behaviour under high temperatures. This study examines how different modelling strategies and fire scenarios affect their global structural response, supporting performance-based design and safety evaluation. A representative precast building, composed of reinforced and prestressed concrete elements, is analysed through finite element simulations using SAFIR software. The ISO 834 nominal fire curve is compared with natural fire scenarios with load equivalent to 60 and 120 minutes of nominal fire duration. Both 2D and 3D models are developed, accounting for second-order effects, prestressing, …

Dimensional Stability And Hydric Behavior Of Lime-Slag Stabilized Compressed Earth Blocks, Ines Bouteldja, Khaled Grine, Said Kenai

UBT International Conference

This study investigates the dimensional behavior of compressed earth blocks stabilized with 4% lime and varying amounts of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). Four formulations containing 0, 4, 8, and 12% slag were tested to evaluate linear shrinkage, swelling, and capillary absorption. The results show that increasing slag content leads to a consistent reduction in both shrinkage and swelling, indicating improved dimensional stability. For the mixture containing 12% slag, shrinkage and swelling decreased by about 27% compared to the reference, while capillary absorption dropped by nearly 70%. These improvements are attributed to matrix densification and reduced capillarity resulting from …

Precast Concrete Panels In Fire, Francesco Daniele, Bruno Dal Lago Oct 2025

Precast Concrete Panels In Fire, Francesco Daniele, Bruno Dal Lago

UBT International Conference

Precast concrete panels are widely used as compartmentation or cladding systems in buildings with fire safety requirements. Although the live loads acting on such panels under service conditions are generally negligible, in fire conditions failures often arise from the malfunction or collapse of their connection systems. When exposed to fire, panels undergo significant thermal deformation, including elongation and deflection, which may compromise structural integrity and lead to connection failure. This study investigates the deformative behaviour of monolithic solid precast panels under fire exposure through non-linear heat transfer and thermomechanical analyses. Based on the results, a practical nomogram is proposed to …

The Impact Of Water On Concrete Quality, Ibush Luzha, Bujar Aliu, Teodor Zguro Oct 2025

The Impact Of Water On Concrete Quality, Ibush Luzha, Bujar Aliu, Teodor Zguro

UBT International Conference

Water is vital to concrete, and it has a dual role. This paper will examine the impact of the quantity (water/cement ratio - W/C) and water quality on concrete. W/C directly affects workability, mechanical strength, porosity, and durability. A low W/C gives stronger concrete but with difficult workability; a high W/C improves workability but weakens mechanical properties and durability. Water quality is also critical; impurities such as chlorides, sulfates, and organic substances can negatively affect cement bonding and strength, cause corrosion of reinforcement, and degradation. Water is also essential for curing, which maximizes strength and durability. Therefore, strict control of …

Friends Recommendation In Dynamic Social Networks Using Breadth-First Search Algorithm, Rigon Pira, Jeta Domi, Besnik Qehaja, Edmond Hajrizi

UBT International Conference

Social networks are constantly evolving, and recommending new con- nections is essential for improving user engagement. This paper proposes a friend recommendation system using the Breadth-First Search (BFS) algorithm on dy- namic graphs, offering a simple, scalable, and efficient solution. The network is modeled as an undirected graph, where users are vertices and friendships are edges. BFS explores the graph level by level, identifying potential friends through mutual connections while excluding existing friends. An adjacency list representation ensures memory efficiency and supports real-time updates. Can- didate friends are ranked by the number of shared mutual connections, with higher counts indicating …

Audio Signal Compression Using Wavelet Transform: A Matlab Implementation, Rigon Pira, Argjend Azizi, Gentrit Halimi, Zhilbert Tafa

UBT International Conference

In modern signal processing, the need to efficiently analyze and store non- stationary signals has become increasingly important, particularly for audio applications where both time and frequency localization are essential. Traditional Fourier-based methods provide global frequency information but fail to indicate when these frequencies occur, making them suboptimal for real-world, time-var- ying signals. This paper investigates the use of wavelet transforms, specifically the Daubechies wavelet for audio signal compression. A practical implementa- tion is developed in MATLAB, where the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is applied to decompose audio signals into approximation and detail coefficients. Thresholding techniques are employed to remove …
