Time To Pay For Nature-Based Solutions, Tamar Ron Nov 2025

Time To Pay For Nature-Based Solutions, Tamar Ron

New England Journal of Public Policy

Viewing nature as ‘common goods’ results in under-valuating of natural capital and assets. As a consequence, budget allocations for environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate action are considerably insufficient. Another result is opting for unsustainable and destructive land and resource uses, which provide immediate and tangible monetary revenues. This article emphasizes the need to valuate natural assets and nature-based solutions (NBS), and their contribution. It further explores optional solutions, including national and global policy, and legislative and taxing instruments, to translate this value into substantive tangible financing for coordinated and synergetic approaches to address the critical global climate and biodiversity …

Understanding Behavioral Engagement In Project-Based Learning: Key Influencing Factors, Maria Coney G. Pallones Nov 2025

Understanding Behavioral Engagement In Project-Based Learning: Key Influencing Factors, Maria Coney G. Pallones

English Faculty Publications

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is widely acknowledged for fostering student engagement; however, limited research explores how its specific design features influence behavioral engagement, defined as students’ active participation, persistence, and effort, particularly in early education settings. This study investigates what key factors, as perceived by teachers, influence students' behavioral engagement during PBL, and how these factors support motivation through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Semi-structured interviews were purposively conducted with elementary teachers experienced in implementing PBL, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three key design features emerged as critical to sustaining behavioral engagement: voice, choice, and ownership, which …

Exploring Perception Of Coarticulatory Cues In Childhood Apraxia Of Speech And Residual Speech Sound Disorders: A Pilot Study, Molly Beiting, Navin Viswanathan, Nicole Caballero, Elaine Hitchcock, Tara Mcallister, Jonathan L. Preston

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Introduction: Children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) exhibit speech production deficits beyond segmental errors, including atypical coarticulation. Broadly, children with speech sound disorders (SSD) also exhibit weaknesses in speech perception, which may directly relate to specific production difficulties. This study examined differences in categorical perception among children with CAS, residual SSD affecting /ɹ/ (rSSD), and typical speech (TD). We hypothesized that children with CAS would demonstrate weaker performance on a task requiring perception of coarticulatory cues—a defining weakness in their speech production—but perform similarly to rSSD peers on a segmental task. Methods: This study was designed as an exploratory …

These developments have occurred alongside several other events, changes, and crises that have altered the landscape of our global communities. Chief among them are …

Real-World Impact Of Amiodarone On Apixaban Population Pharmacokinetics In Hospitalized Patients, Samantha Kolowrat, Chazmyn Riley, Kevin Lam, Lynda Thomson, Douglas F. Stickle, Walter K. Kraft Nov 2025

Real-World Impact Of Amiodarone On Apixaban Population Pharmacokinetics In Hospitalized Patients, Samantha Kolowrat, Chazmyn Riley, Kevin Lam, Lynda Thomson, Douglas F. Stickle, Walter K. Kraft

Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Despite common coadministration in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), there is minimal evidence regarding the impact of concomitant amiodarone use on apixaban pharmacokinetics (PK). We described the population PK of apixaban (2.5 and 5mg twice daily) in 106 hospitalized patients with and without concomitant amiodarone administration at steady state. Apixaban PK was reasonably described by a one-compartment model with first-order absorption and linear elimination. Aside from the receipt of amiodarone, age was retained as a statistically significant covariate on apparent clearance. Model-based simulations depicted concomitant amiodarone use increasing AUCT for both 2.5mg (1.58, 90% CI [1.28, 1.87]) and 5mg (1.12, 90% …

Thinking Differently: Creating Spaces Of Autonomy For The Revitalization Of Indigenous Legal Traditions In The Context Of Copyright, Johnny Mack, Graham Reynolds Nov 2025

Thinking Differently: Creating Spaces Of Autonomy For The Revitalization Of Indigenous Legal Traditions In The Context Of Copyright, Johnny Mack, Graham Reynolds

All Faculty Publications

There is an urgent need to think differently. Colonialism, in its settler variant, has developed new and particularly dangerous strategies to advance its dual imperatives of the dispossession of Indigenous peoples and the erasure of Indigeneity as a politicized identity construct with a legitimate claim to law. This goal is advanced today through rights frameworks, which have generated a worrisome platform to support the logic of elimination by drawing Indigenous calls for autonomy, self-determination, and sovereignty into a settler colonial framework of authority. In this chapter, we highlight how these strategies function in the context of Canadian copyright law. Canadian …

Methods: We used a quantitative research design with convenience sampling to administer a telehealth satisfaction survey to caregivers of children living in medically underserved areas who were referred for an autism diagnostic evaluation. Timeliness and accuracy of diagnostic evaluations via the hybrid model were also assessed. Findings: Most caregivers did …

The Role Of Atmospheric Turbulence On Cloud Droplet Distribution And Droplet Impaction On An Airfoil, Arash Shad, Hashnayne Ahmed, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar, S. A. Sherif Nov 2025

The Role Of Atmospheric Turbulence On Cloud Droplet Distribution And Droplet Impaction On An Airfoil, Arash Shad, Hashnayne Ahmed, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar, S. A. Sherif

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We conduct turbulence-informed Euler–Lagrange simulations of droplet-laden flow to examine the effects of atmospheric turbulence on droplet impingement characteristics on a NACA 0012 airfoil. We implement statistical overloading, whereby we inject millions of droplets, ranging in diameter from 1 to 160 microns, upstream of the airfoil at an average streamwise velocity of 120 m/s. Within a fraction of a second, these droplets would have either impinged on the airfoil or continued downstream. While the incoming air flow is maintained uniform, droplet injection is informed by ambient turbulence, affecting both the droplet velocity distribution as well as the size-dependent preferential concentration …

Climatic Controls On Soil Production, Transport And Chemical Erosion: Insights From Modelling Topography, Soils And Cosmogenic Nuclides At Little Lake, Oregon, Miles M. Reed, Ken L. Ferrier, Jill A. Marshall, Josh J. Roering, J. Taylor Perron

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Predicting physical and chemical erosion rate responses to climate change are an ongoing challenge in geomorphology. A promising approach for investigating this is by measuring transient variations in physical and chemical erosion rates during climatically variable time periods, which can be accomplished by measuring cosmogenic nuclide concentrations and chemical depletion in sedimentary deposits. Interpreting such measurements warrants applying landscape evolution models that track variations in topography, cosmogenic nuclide concentrations and chemical depletion in soils. We applied a recently developed model that tracks these quantities at Little Lake, Oregon. Previous studies documented variations in cosmogenic nuclide concentrations and chemical depletion in …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social recommendation, which leverages users’ social information to predict users’ preferences, is a popular branch of recommender systems. Many existing studies have attempted to advance the performance of collaborative filtering methods by leveraging the user-user matrix to enhance user embedding learning with user’s social connections. While the existing social recommender systems have demonstrated good performance in various recommendation tasks, the extent of social information usefulness in recommender systems remains unclear. This paper addresses the research gap by designing experiments to answer three research questions: (i) How useful is social information in varying user-item data sparsity? (ii) How much social information …
