Mine Tailings As A Sustainable Filler For Asphalt Binder–Mastics: A Review, Daniel O. Oguntayo, Nuha S. Mashaan, Sanjay K. Shukla
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Sustainability has become a primary focus on a global scale. However, there is a threat to sustainable development due to the substantial generation of waste from urbanization and industrialization. Particularly, the accumulation of mine tailings is a problem, an industrial waste by-product from the mining sector. To support sustainable development and promote circular economy, it is imperative to utilize the materials in the production of asphalt mastics. This review examines the performance of mining waste-modified asphalt binder–mastic to create an idea of what tailings might be used for in subsequent studies. This review contributes to knowledge by consolidating research efforts …

Generation Expansion Planning: Transitioning Toward Decarbonization With A Focus On Reliability And Dunkelflaute, Taraneh Ghanbarzadeh, Daryoush Habibi, S. M.Muslem Uddin, Asma Aziz
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Modern power systems increasingly rely on variable renewable energy sources, supported by energy storage systems and gas power plants, to meet decarbonization targets. However, the high penetration of renewables introduces significant uncertainty due to their weather-dependent nature, posing challenges to system reliability. This paper proposes a probabilistic, multi-level generation expansion planning framework that integrates reliability assessments, with a particular emphasis on the role of energy storage systems. A novel probabilistic approach is also introduced to model the Dunkelflaute phenomenon and evaluate its impact on system reliability. Additionally, the study explores the influence of regulatory mechanisms — referred to as embedded …

Systems for crisis response have required several different models for the analysis of unstructured text, such as identifying needs, locations, topics, routing, and matching of needs with available responders. Large Language Models (LLMs) have replaced task-specific models across various language processing tasks. However, LLMs are known to be limited by their training data, collected before the crisis. In this demo, we explore the use of LLMs for crisis response scenarios with rapidly evolving information environments. We show how the augmentation of these models with external reliable sources of crisis-specific information can help build adaptive systems for response. The demonstration video …

The Irrelevance Of “Peak Fame” On Celebrity Candidate Success, Richard T. Longoria, Dana Reyes
Political Science Faculty Publications
Objective
Does it matter “when” a celebrity runs for office? The political scientists who study celebrity candidates need to consider an important insight from communications and media scholars. Fame is a time-dependent variable. Someone who was famous 40 years ago may no longer be widely known today.
Methods
A list of celebrity political candidates who ran for office in the United States between 1865 and 2022 was created to measure campaign success.
Results
In terms of winning an election, it does not matter whether a celebrity candidate runs at the peak of their fame or waits until decades later. What …

Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is increasingly recognized as essential for improving neural and cognitive function, especially in older age. Here, we examined a cross-sectional sample of the Human Connectome Project (HCP) Aging dataset (ages 36–100; N = 378) to test the hypothesis that functional connectivity profiles that are related to CRF are also associated with episodic memory and executive function across middle age and older adults. To test these hypotheses, we first used connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to identify functional connections (FCs) that were separately predictive of CRF (2 Minute Walk Test), episodic memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test), and executive …

Spanish Heritage Speakers And Latinidad: How Spanish Fluency Influences Self-Perceived Latinidad Among Heritage Speakers, David Alejandro Rivera Sandoval, Gladys Valle
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Abstract of Research: This study examines 1) how heritage speakers' self-perceived proficiency and fluency in Spanish influence their identity as Latinos, and 2) the generational similarities and differences in their lived experiences. Through surveys and interviews, the relationship between Spanish proficiency and fluency and perceived Latinidad among nine Spanish heritage speakers (with Latin American ancestry) has been assessed. The research suggests that no statistically significant relationship was found between language proficiency or fluency and perceived Latinismo. However, qualitative findings revealed that participants construct their Latino identity based on cultural values, lived experiences, and a sense of belonging rather than language …

Sally Walton's Will: Reuniting The Andrews Families Of Western Maine And Beyond, Kathrine C. Aydelott
Faculty Publications
This article demonstrates how the 1871 probate file of Sally (Andrews) (Andrews) (Clark) Walton of Paris, Maine, resolves decades of genealogical confusion among Andrews families of western Maine. Analysis of her will, codicils, and probate accountings reconstructs a fragmented sibling group and definitively distinguishes two men named Perez Andrews whose identities had long been conflated. The evidence firmly links Darius Andrews of Sumner, Perez Andrews of Buckfield and Penobscot County, and several previously untraced Andrews siblings to a single parental family headed by Ebenezer Andrews Jr. and Sarah (Elliot) Andrews. Moving beyond questions of descent, the article shows how probate …

Intelligent Decision-Making Systems In Smart Greenhouses, Muso Berdiyor Ugli Allanov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
Smart greenhouses offer a solution to sustainable food production under climate uncertainty, yet their management often depends on fixed rules or human intuition. This study proposes an intelligent decision-making framework that integrates optimization, simulation, and a neural set into a self-learning system. By generating “conditionally real data” through simulation and evolutionary algorithms, the system can predict microclimatic changes and optimize control of water, energy, and nutrients. Continuous digital feedback enables adaptive, data-efficient operation even with limited real data. Experimental results demonstrate reduced resource use and improved yield stability, advancing the development of autonomous and resilient greenhouse ecosystems.

Spatio-Temporal Gcn With Softmax Classifier For Skeleton-Based Human Action Recognition, Kabul Khudaybergenov, Avazjon Marakhimov, Zahriddin Muminov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
Skeleton-based human action recognition is an important research area with many practical applications. Most existing methods rely on single representations of skeletal sequences, which cannot totally obtain all the complex features of human movements. This paper presents LFHAR (Latent Features for Human Action Recognition), a new framework that uses multiple spatio-temporal latent representations to improve the extraction of action features. Our method captures how skeletal poses change over time and combines motion information from both individual joints and connected body parts. The proposed approach applies graph-based processing to each skeleton frame in a sequence, then arranges the resulting graph features …

Proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) have the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment by specifically targeting and degrading oncogenic proteins. Using the ubiquitin-proteasome system, PROTACs allow the selective degradation of disease-causing proteins, including those traditionally deemed “undruggable” by conventional small-molecule inhibitors. By catalytically eliminating rather than inhibiting proteins, PROTACs provide sustained target suppression with lower doses and reduced toxicity. Their bifunctional design linking a protein of interest to an E3 ligase drives targeted ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation. Recent progress demonstrates promise in treating solid and hematologic malignancies, with several candidates advancing to clinical trials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of developing …

A Gis Method To Summarize Changes Among Classes During A Time Series With An Application To Land Cover In Western Bahia, Brazil, Robert Gilmore Pontius, Antonio Victor Galvão Da Fonseca
Geography
Petabytes of raster maps exist that show numerous classes across a series of many time points. Scientists need new methods to summarize the temporal changes so scientists can understand broad patterns and have guidance for how to look deeper into particular places, trajectories, classes, and time intervals. Our manuscript addresses this need by presenting an innovative method that summarizes the temporal changes in terms of a map of four trajectories and bar charts of five components: quantity, allocation exchange, allocation shift, alternation exchange, and alternation shift. An application illustrates the method using 16 land cover classes at 7 time points …

Omahe Rak Usah Apik-Apik: Adequate Housing Problems Of The Urban Poor Along Railway Tracks, Syahwal -
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
As urban development accelerates, urbanization has simultaneously grown as an inseparable phenomenon. However, beneath this transformation lies a crisis within the capitalist system known as overaccumulation, which has led to the marginalization of urban poor groups. This phenomenon results in the creation of slums, one of which is found in the periphery of railway tracks, where the urban poor reside. Semarang the capital of Central Java Province, Indonesia, is an apt example of such developments,. This study takes as starting point that the right to adequate housing is an integral part of human rights and addresses the issue of why …

“Flexing” And The Luxury Lifestyle: A Critique Of The “False Solidarity” Of Female Officials And Public Figures In Contemporary Indonesian Media, Wening Udasmoro, Leo Marai
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
This study aims to explore the practice of “flexing” and the luxury lifestyle as represented in the media both through the self-representation of female public figures on their social media accounts and through coverage by mainstream outlets. These figures include actresses, entertainers, and other widely recognized social personalities. The research is urgent given that the public display of wealth and opulence disseminated through the media generates a domino effect within society, particularly in shaping consumption patterns and fueling an increasingly pervasive culture of consumerism in Indonesia. The proliferation of consumerist culture both reflects and exacerbates social inequality in Indonesia, where …

An Efficient Self-Supervised Learning Framework For Swarm Robot Trajectory Analysis, Brooklyn Berry, Gaukhar Nurbek, Juan Manuel Perez, Richard Tapia, Qi Lu, Yifeng Gao
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Swarm robotics leverages groups of autonomous robots to perform complex tasks collaboratively. Recently, there has been growing interest in the Self-Supervised Learning framework (SSL) for social robots, yet very little research has been done on designing a SSL framework for foraging swarm robots systems. In this paper, to address the two challenges above, we proposed a novel efficient self-supervised learning framework. Specifically, we proposed 1) a shared weight multi-instance based encoder-decoder structure for model pre-training; and 2) an embedding series compression strategy to reduce the space cost in inference stage. Experiments show our system can match the performance of standard …

Improving Prescription Capture Rates Through A Standardized Meds To Beds Program At Parkview Heart Institute, Haley Michaud Pharmd, Tara Jellison, Katelyn Wees Pharmd, Sarah Ferrell Pharmd, Shery Grosjean Pharmd, Inderjit Ajimal
Pharmacy Residency
Background
Medication adherence is critical for patients with cardiac conditions discharged with new prescriptions. Barriers such as high costs, insurance challenges, and lack of transportation often prevent patients from accessing prescribed therapies, leading to readmissions, increased healthcare costs, and worse outcomes. Meds to beds programs offer patients a convenient, patient-centered solution by delivering discharge prescriptions directly to patients’ rooms, reducing readmission rates, and enhancing adherence. Despite success in other departments at Parkview Health, utilization of the program in the Parkview Heart Institute (PHI) remains limited. Objectives
To implement and evaluate a standardized Meds to Beds (M2B) workflow aimed at improving …Spatio-Temporal Dynamics Of Malaria Vector Niche Overlaps In Africa, Eric Ali Ibrahim, John Odindi, Mark Wamalwa, Henri E.Z. Tonnang
Spatio-Temporal Dynamics Of Malaria Vector Niche Overlaps In Africa, Eric Ali Ibrahim, John Odindi, Mark Wamalwa, Henri E.Z. Tonnang

Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with transmission heightened by the dynamics of primary and secondary mosquitoes infected with Plasmodium parasites. Regions where both vector types co-exist face heightened likelihood of intensified malaria transmission. Hence, understanding vectors' ecological interactions, especially their niche overlaps in geographic or environmental space, is crucial for targeted malaria control and elimination strategies. We employed a dynamic cellular automata (CA) model to map niche overlaps among primary (Anopheles gambiae complex, An. funestus group) and secondary (An. pharoensis, An. coustani) malaria vectors across African, using open-access environmental and vector occurrence datasets sourced from …

Tularemia, a neglected zoonosis, remains underreported in Africa despite growing concern over its climate-driven expansion. This study aims to quantify the specific contribution of climate to tularemia risk using a climate attribution framework. We trained a Least Squares Dummy Variable (LSDV) fixed-effects panel model on United States (U.S.) county-level tularemia incidence data from 2011–2020 (n = 500, R² = 0.90), incorporating only climatic predictors: cumulative temperature, cumulative precipitation, and their respective variabilities. The climate-only model explained 86% of variance in the training data, demonstrating strong climate influence on tularemia disease dynamics. We then applied the model to East Africa, using …
