Can Interpersonal Trust Predict And Account For Symptom Change During Group Cognitive Processing Therapy For Ptsd? An Investigation Of The Iterated Trust Game, M Wright Williams, Christopher Hunt, David P Graham, Matt Estey, Lia Smith, Katherine Mccurry, Brooks King-Casas, Pearl Chiu

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Objective: Group cognitive processing therapy (GCPT) is frequently utilized to treat PTSD within the VA healthcare system, but its mechanisms are not well understood. Interpersonal trust could be an important change process in GCPT given its relevance to group-based therapy and its role in CPT, but self-report measures are inadequate for capturing the dynamic interplay that defines interpersonal trust. Here, we examined the degree to which interpersonal could predict and account for PTSD symptom change in GCPT using the iterated trust game (ITG)-a behavioral task used to approximate real-world trust behavior.

Methods: Participants were Veterans with PTSD who participated in …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

A team from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a strategic foresight project to explore the future of occupational safety research (OSR). Data collected via systematic horizon scanning and key informant interviews were synthesized into six drivers of OSR change: (1) technological advancement, (2) partnerships and public trust, (3) prioritizing research investments, (4) safety and health integration, (5) data and science quality, and (6) worker protections. These drivers served as the basis for envisioning four potential OSR futures. Analysis of the resulting scenarios identified opportunities to enhance and advance OSR methods and approaches, innovation, systems thinking, …

Stomach Cancer Incidence In Asians As Compared To Other Ethnic Populations Over Time From 2000 To 2021 In Seer Areas Of The United States, Zhuoyun Li, Xianglin L Du

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Stomach cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, but its late-stage detection and its lack of early symptoms are still the main challenges ahead. Limited research has focused on detailed racial and ethnic disparities in stomach cancer incidence within the United States. This study aims to address these gaps by analyzing age-adjusted stomach cancer incidence rates from 2000 to 2021.

Methods: Using data from the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program (2000-2021), we identified a cohort of 138,628 individuals diagnosed with incident stomach cancer at age ≥ 20. Both crude and age-adjusted models were …

Multilevel Selection In The Margins: A Review Of Its Representation In Undergraduate Biology Textbooks, C. A. Greene, S. J. Mcpeek, L. Mitchem, A. B. Clark, Vincent A. Formica

Biology Faculty Works

Multilevel selection (MLS) is a foundational framework that expands the concept of natural selection beyond the traditional focus on individuals or genes to larger units, like groups. Despite strong empirical support and applications in a broad range of biological fields, MLS, often referred to as group selection, has a controversial history, which has impeded its wide use and led to incorrect inferences on the sources and strength of selection. Here, we explore how MLS is currently presented to undergraduate biology students by analyzing the content of nine commonly used Evolutionary Biology and Animal Behavior textbooks. We ask whether and how …

Reading American Anarchy As A Legal History Of Immigrants: Forum On Willrich's American Anarchy Forum: Willrich's American Anarchy, Daniel J. Sharfstein

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Michael Willrich’s American Anarchy is at once an extraordinary history of ideas about anarchism and the rule of law, a history of lawyering, and a history of the simultaneous emergence of a capacious administrative state alongside a robust set of judicially protected civil liberties. While Willrich tells a rich and intricate story of illiberal border administration, American Anarchy also shows radical immigrants at work over decades in New York, with the border and its oppressive administrative apparatus little more than a dim memory. This essay explores how the book is more than a history of the border—it’s a history of …

Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

Biological sex, hormones, and gender uniquely affect health and disease, often resulting in disparities for women across the lifespan and from different racial and ethnic groups, geographical locations, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Without intentional investment and infrastructure to support good health and wellbeing for women, half of the world’s population remains vulnerable to preventable morbidity and mortality. The Society for Women’s Health Research and ECHAlliance–The Global Health Connector convened a women’s health program as part of the 10th Annual Science Summit during the United Nations 79th General Assembly. This hybrid event was held in New York, NY, (USA) and virtually in …

Constructing An Effective Whistleblower Statute: Virginia Is Nearly There, Emma D. Guirlinger Nov 2025

Constructing An Effective Whistleblower Statute: Virginia Is Nearly There, Emma D. Guirlinger

William & Mary Law Review

Whistleblowers are pivotal in ensuring transparency and accountability in numerous public and private industries. They ensure that existing laws are enforced and hold employers accountable when they seek to evade them. Recognizing the significant value provided by whistleblowers, and that private actors within organizations are often in a better position than government enforcement officials to uncover wrongdoing, Virginia has enacted several whistleblower protection statutes, including the Virginia Whistleblower Protection Law (VWPL), which advocates lauded for “provid[ing] broad protections against retaliation and fundamentally alter[ing] the landscape for” Virginia whistleblowers.

While the VWPL seems promising, two provisions of the law, its statute …

Killing Through Their Kids, Dyllan Moreno Taxman Nov 2025

Killing Through Their Kids, Dyllan Moreno Taxman

William & Mary Law Review

In early 2024, James and Jennifer Crumbley were sentenced to over a decade in prison after their son, Ethan, shot and killed four classmates at Oxford High School in Michigan. The Crumbley parents incurred manslaughter liability by ignoring Ethan’s deteriorating mental state, gifting him the murder weapon, and failing to act on concerns about Ethan’s behavior on the day of the shooting. The Crumbleys were the first parents of a school shooter to be convicted of a homicide in American history. This Article suggests they will be far from the last. Indeed, less than one year after the Crumbley convictions, …

An Update On Non-Cigarette Nicotine-Containing Products And The Periodontal Patient, Brendan Keeney D.D.S., Ryan Schure Dds, Msc, Frcd

The New York State Dental Journal

The adverse general and oral health effects from traditional cigarette smoking are supported by decades of research. However, the use of cigarettes in the United States is on the decline, and current research and literature is relatively lacking with respect to novel nicotine consumption methods. Given the increasing and significant use of non-cigarette nicotine-containing products, such as electronic cigarettes, oral nicotine pouches and hookah pipes, attention from oral healthcare providers is warranted. An understanding of the potential negative periodontal outcomes related to these newer nicotine delivery systems is crucial to properly educating and treating patients today.

Objective: To examine the effects of incorporating (1) a neurocognitive reactive component and (2) a neurocognitive multitask component on performance degradation of a single-limb hop functional performance test.

Design: Randomized within-subject design of 32 healthy young adults.

Methods: Participants performed 3 randomly assigned variations of the single-limb T-Drill Hop Test (TDHT). The time to complete each test was recorded. The reactive TDHT (R-TDHT) consisted of the TDHT with a flashing light, indicating the "T" intersection hop direction. The neurocognitive reactive-recall TDHT (RR-TDHT) incorporated the R-TDHT and required participants to observe 5 flashing light colors. Participants then recalled the colors in …

Plastic Or Natural? The Impact Of Marine Debris On The Shell Preference Of A Terrestrial Hermit Crab, Robert Puschendorf, Pete Cotton, Mark Briffa Nov 2025

Plastic Or Natural? The Impact Of Marine Debris On The Shell Preference Of A Terrestrial Hermit Crab, Robert Puschendorf, Pete Cotton, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Plastic pollution is one of the main human-induced rapid environmental changes threatening marine organisms. Terrestrial hermit crabs, which inhabit coastal areas where litter accumulates, are increasingly documented using plastic debris as shells, and a recent study hypothesized that this shift may be an adaptive response. They suggested that ‘plastic shells’ may reduce transport costs, provide camouflage in a polluted environment, and may even be favoured by sexual selection. Our study is the first to quantify plastic shell use in a population, to examine shell preference and to test the hypothesis that plastic shells optimize the ratio of weight to volume. …

Poking Holes And Adding Points In Dictator Games, James C. Cox, Cary Deck, Laura Razzolini, Vjollca Sadiraj

ESI Working Papers

Deviations from choices predicted by self-regarding preferences have regularly been observed in standard dictator games. Such behavior is not inconsistent with conventional preference theory or revealed preference theory, which accommodate other-regarding preferences. By contrast, experiments in which giving nothing is not the least generous feasible act produce data that is inconsistent with conventional preference theory including social preference models and suggest the possible relevance of reference point models. Two such models are the reference-dependent theory of riskless choice with loss aversion and choice monotonicity in moral reference points. Our experiment includes novel treatments designed to challenge both theoretical models of …

Dentistry And The Law: There Will Be No Ban On Covenants Not To Compete, Daniel Schulte Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted on September 5, 2025, to accept a federal court ruling that it had exceeded its authority in proposing a ban on covenants not to compete (CNTCs), ending two-and-a-half years of speculation. Consequently, the enforceability of CNTCs will primarily be determined by Michigan statutory and common law. Guidelines for drafting enforceable CNTCs include setting a reasonable term, typically two years or less for employees, though purchase agreements may allow up to five years. The restricted geographic territory must be limited to what is necessary to protect the practice’s current patient population, such as a 10-mile …

These Dentists Have A Story To Tell; What's Yours?, Rich Evans

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Every dentist has his or her own story to tell when it comes to personal and practice success. Each is different, of course, but a recurring theme is how membership in the MDA, ADA, and their local society seems to help them succeed. They find that practice life is somehow better — more rewarding — with membership. Many will tell you that being a member makes them a more satisfied, more grounded professional. In this issue we present the stories of four MDA members who discovered how MDA membership gives them many advantages in their personal and professional lives.

The …

Mda Insurance And Mda Services: Your One-Stop Partners In Practice Success!

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

MDA Insurance and MDA Services act as one-stop partners for Michigan dentists, delivering support in risk management, compliance, and profitability since 1986. MDA Insurance provides a wide array of specialized coverage, including professional liability, health (MDA Health Plan), life, disability, and personal lines. MDA Services offers vetted programs and endorsed vendors designed to save members money and time, generating royalties that fund MDA advocacy and education efforts. Utilizing these member benefits—such as reducing practice overhead through discounts on dental supplies (34% savings) or remote staffing (saving over $21,000 annually)—can easily offset membership dues. The dual entity provides comprehensive support, ensuring …

Stronger Together: The Case For Mda Membership, Cheri Newman Dds Nov 2025

Stronger Together: The Case For Mda Membership, Cheri Newman Dds

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

MDA President Dr. Cheri Newman makes the case for membership, arguing that while automatic membership is no longer assumed, the value is essential to the profession. The primary benefit is the collective voice; without organized dentistry (MDA/ADA), dentists would lose advocacy and support, necessitating the eventual reinvention of the system. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the MDA's critical role as a trusted source for guidance on mandates and safe reopening. Beyond intangible advocacy, membership offers substantial, practical advantages that can easily cover the cost of dues. These advantages include financial savings on malpractice, liability, health, disability, and life insurance, along with …

Child-Taking Justice And The Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, Diane Marie Amann Nov 2025

Child-Taking Justice And The Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, Diane Marie Amann

Scholarly Works

The focus of this article is the 2022–2024 Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative undertaken the U.S. Executive Branch. The article chronicles this three-year process, which included sessions with survivors and their descendants, and which resulted in a two-volume report, in an apology by President Joe Biden, and in designation of a national memorial at one of the most notorious school sites. This article examines the initiative as an example of “child-taking justice”; that is, as a process of what is called “transitional justice”, done in an effort to redress the takings of children from their community, followed by efforts to …
