Language Proficiency In Translation And Interpreting Programs: Insights From Administrators And Instructors, Julio Ciller, Sonia Colina
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
This article examines the relationship between language proficiency and translation and interpreting (T&I) education in U.S. programs, focusing on language preparedness and development. This mixed-methods study investigates course prerequisites, proficiency requirements, and perceptions of administrators and instructors regarding students’ expected versus observed proficiency levels. Findings reveal a mismatch between expected and average proficiency when entering a program, with both groups acknowledging that T&I courses contribute to students’ language development but noting that current program practices often fail to align students’ actual proficiency with their needs. At the graduate level, instructors criticize proficiency requirements, and some administrators continue to view translator …

Although long-standing research has documented the many benefits of dual language (DL) education programs in the K-12 setting, there are few studies on the impact of DL in higher education. This study analyzes DL education at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) where certain classes are taught in Spanish or bilingually across diverse disciplines. In this mixed methods research study, we examine (1) how enrollment in these classes impacts student success through an analysis of cumulative grade point averages, retention, and time to degree and (2) how students perceive these classes through an analysis of course evaluations and surveys responses from current …

B lymphocytes play major adaptive immune roles, producing antibodies and driving T cell responses. However, how immunometabolism networks support B cell activation and differentiation in response to distinct receptor stimuli remains incompletely understood. To gain insights, we systematically investigated acute primary human B cell transcriptional, translational, and metabolomic responses to B cell receptor (BCR), TLR9, CD40-ligand (CD40L), IL-4, or combinations thereof. T cell-independent BCR/TLR9 costimulation, which drives malignant and autoimmune B cell states, highly induced transaminase branched chain amino acid transaminase 1 (BCAT1), which localized to lysosomal membranes to support branched chain amino acid synthesis and mTORC1 activation. BCAT1 inhibition …

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) can alleviate symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) refractory to conventional therapies. Overstimulation, however, can elicit pathological behaviors marked by disinhibition and recklessness.
Observations: Two patients with OCD underwent DBS of the VC/VS region and met responder status within 1 month of stimulation onset, as evidenced by a ≥ 35% reduction in their Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale score. Notably, both patients exhibited signs of disinhibited behavior soon after DBS activation, including gambling, sleep disruption, and interpersonal relationship volatility. Through careful management, responder status persisted stably beyond the transient period of …

Facilitating Bedroom Recording Practices, Christopher William Bulgren, Jason C. Fick
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
An increase in access to recording technology has expanded opportunities for teachers and students. One approach, bedroom recording, involves the use of low-budget hardware and software in common, untreated spaces, often in one’s home. Bedroom recording practices significantly impact the sense of place and workflow in the industry for both professionals and amateur music makers. As an art form that thrives on mobility, bedroom recording is a natural pathway for music students to achieve low-cost, self-guided recordings. The purpose of this study was to explore best practices and student interactions related to a bedroom recording project. Participants were 17 Music …

The Role Of Inflammatory Cytokines In The Bidirectional Relationship Between Periodontitis And Diabetes Mellitus, Andrew R. Witty
The Role Of Inflammatory Cytokines In The Bidirectional Relationship Between Periodontitis And Diabetes Mellitus, Andrew R. Witty
Oral Health
Periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with each other in a bidirectional relationship. The mechanism by which diabetes affects periodontitis is understood to be due to the inflammatory effects of hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels) and a hospitable environment for sugar-consuming bacteria. Periodontitis is known to be associated with higher levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), a long-term measurement of blood glucose control, and treatment of periodontitis reduces HbA1c. Inflammation caused by periodontitis induces insulin resistance (which leads to higher blood glucose levels), but due to the complex nature of inflammation it is difficult to …

Accounting For The Flash Region In Breast Radiotherapy: Hu Optimization Of Virtual Bolus And Impact Of Brass Mesh On Skin, Julianna Pontoriero
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
For free-breathing volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), a major challenge in dose delivery is accounting for planning target volume (PTV) motion from respiration. To minimize PTV underdosing, this study implemented a 1.5 cm virtual bolus (VB) to create skin flash. A brass mesh bolus was also modeled in the treatment planning system to simulate its clinical impact. Different Hounsfield Units (HU) were assigned to the VB to determine the most effective value.
Five post-mastectomy breast cancer patients treated with VMAT were retrospectively analyzed. Plan normalization values, conformity indexes, and dosimetric criteria were compared to find the optimal HU for the …

Constraints On Inner Core Composition From Seismicanisotropy: The Importance Of Light Elements And Nickel, Jada Bollmeyer, Daniel A. Frost, Prajna Paramita Das

The inner core is seismically anisotropic, with PKIKP waves traversing the inner core parallel to the rotation axis faster than those in the equatorial plane. This anisotropy increases with depth into the inner core and may result from alignment of iron crystals deformed during inner core growth. Using previously calculated elastic properties of iron, we seek to determine the most likely iron-light element alloy (FeC, FeO, FeS, or FeSi). For each FeX alloy, we interpolate elastic tensors across the pressure and temperature range of the inner core and model the anisotropy resulting from flow during core growth. Lastly, we compare …

Abstract
Perimenopause and menopause represent universal, transformative life stages that affect more than 63 million women in the United States. Yet, this phase remains among the most neglected areas in women’s health. Despite robust evidence supporting the safety and effectiveness of both hormonal and non-hormonal therapies, millions of women remain undiagnosed or undertreated due to fragmented healthcare systems, limited provider education, absence of EMR screening prompts, and inconsistent insurance coverage.
This Capstone Project synthesizes current research and population health data to evaluate how integrating a standardized menopause SmartSet within the electronic medical record (EMR), coupled with structured provider education, can …
Improving Maternal Outcomes Through Prenatal Telehealth Services In Rural America, Jazmine Lima
Improving Maternal Outcomes Through Prenatal Telehealth Services In Rural America, Jazmine Lima
Capstones
The maternal health crisis in the United States has become an alarming issue, with rural women experiencing twice the rate of pregnancy-related deaths compared to urban populations. This crisis highlights the need to address the growing concern of deep-rooted inequalities in healthcare access, quality, and outcomes for marginalized populations. In response to key contributors such as workforce shortages, systemic inequities, and widespread “maternity care deserts”, this project aimed to explore evidence-based telehealth strategies to improve perinatal outcomes in rural America. A literature review was conducted to examine access barriers, maternal health inequalities, and effective telehealth models, with findings revealing that …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
OBJECTIVE: Marriage is associated with improved health and alcohol outcomes, yet prior research has often combined diverse non-marital relationships, obscuring whether benefits are unique to marriage or a result of strong interpersonal relationships. This study examines whether marriage, compared to cohabitation, exclusive dating, or being single, is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) remission and whether this varies by sex and partner drinking.
METHOD: Participants were adults from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism Lifespan Study (n = 1494; 54.4% female) who met criteria for lifetime DSM-5 AUD. Multivariate logistic regression models examined the association between marital status …

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women in Africa, but stigma often delays cervical cancer prevention. We explore the perceptions, enablers and nurturers through the lens of intersectional stigma in the uptake of cervical cancer prevention services in Nigeria.
METHOD: Indepth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted among women aged 30-65 years and girls aged 9-26 years in Lagos, Nigeria. Data were analysed thematically. Using the relationships and expectation domain of the PEN-3 cultural model, we identified perceptions, enablers and nurturers related to the uptake of primary and secondary cervical cancer prevention services …

Maybe It Is Time To Retire The Nlra, Jordan Pollack
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
Within the first week of his presidency, President Trump removed National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”) General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo and Board Member Gwynne Wilcox, leaving the NLRB without a quorum and therefore unable to have any real impact on cases brought before it. This action sent unions and organizers into a panic as employers celebrated the expanded ability to get away with unfair labor practices and policies that limit strikes and work stoppages. However, the history of unions in America is not one defined by the National Labor Relations Act (“NLRA”). In fact, the NLRA was implemented to stifle the …
