Synthesis And Evaluation Of Amidoximes As Potential Pharmaceuticals Against Antimicrobial-Resistant Bacteria, Prudence Mange
Honors Theses
The rise of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the healthcare industry has led to devastating effects in recent years, ranging from increased risks associated with hospital treatment to longer illness duration, which may eventually lead to increased death rates (Naghavi, Mohsen et al, 2024). To combat this ongoing challenge, this project aims to synthesize amidoximes, which are organic derivatives of carboxylic acids with an oxime and an amino acid group. Amidoximes have been utilized in various clinical applications, including antituberculosis medication, hypotensives, antiarrhythmics, antibacterials, and antifungals (J. Chil et al., 2011). -- The focus of this project was to test their antibacterial …

The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) measures radio emission from high-energy extensive air showers. Consisting of 153 autonomous radio-detector stations spread over 17 km^2, it detects radio waves in the frequency range of 30 to 80 MHz. Accurate characterization of the detector response is crucial for proper interpretation of the collected data. Previously, this was achieved through laboratory measurements of the analog chain and simulations and measurements of the antenna's directional response. In this paper, we perform an absolute calibration using the continuously monitored sidereal modulation of the diffuse Galactic radio emission. Calibration is done by comparing the average frequency …

By employing a cross-sectional research design, this study seeks to determine the reasons for weight growth in young children. Fifty children served as research subjects. Multivariate analysis was the method of analysis employed. The study's findings indicated a substantial (p <0.05) correlation between early childhood weight gain and variation factors. According to the study's findings, early childhood weight growth was associated with nutrition, parental genetics, and a lack of physical exercise. The growing health hazards associated with obesity and excess weight, particularly in young children, have made efforts to avoid these issues a top priority. This research was conducted in early childhood education and kindergartens in Kediri, East Java. Purposive sampling was used, meaning the sample was selected based on specific considerations, namely those who were overweight or obese. By employing a cross-sectional research design, this study seeks to determine the reasons for weight growth in young children. Fifty children served as research subjects. Multivariate analysis was the method of analysis employed. The results of the study were that the hereditary factor variable obtained a percentage of 56% with a p value of 0.045 which indicates p < 0.05 proving that there is a significant relationship between hereditary factors and weight gain. The dietary pattern variable accounted for the highest percentage, at 62%, with a p-value of 0.023, indicating a p < 0.05, demonstrating a significant relationship between dietary patterns and weight gain in early childhood. The final variable was physical activity, accounting for 54%. The p-value was 0.027, indicating a p < 0.05, indicating a significant relationship between physical activity and weight gain. The conclusion of this study is that the variables of poor dietary management and lack of daily physical activity are factors that have a higher risk of weight gain.

Holding On To Social Hierarchy: An Intersectional Exploration Of Attitudes That Maintain Social Inequality, Cassandra E. Santos
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Hierarchical social structures are embedded in U.S. society that allow certain social groups to be positioned above others, granting them unearned advantages. Attitudes that maintain such conditions thereby warrant attention, as they contribute to the maintenance of inequality. This study used secondary data analysis to investigate how social dominance orientation (SDO), White supremacy ideologies (WSI), and conservative political ideologies were influenced by the intersection of gender (i.e., men vs. women) and race (i.e., White vs. BIPOC). The primary study used crowdsourcing to recruit a nationally represented sample of participants based on political affiliation. The present study consisted of 359 total …

Surgical site infections are a devastating complication of instrumented orthopaedic surgery, particularly in the spine. Bacterial biofilms, once formed on the implant surfaces, exhibit antibiotic tolerance and immune escape, which lead to treatment challenges. Up to 9% of instrumented spine surgeries result in infection, despite the use of systemic antibiotics and local, powdered antibiotics for prophylaxis. The bacteria that survive the initial prophylaxis may be susceptible to a second, high dose of antibiotic prophylaxis prior to establishing at the site. Hence, we designed a local drug delivery system consisting of polylactic acid (PLA) film pockets that can be noninvasively triggered …

Quien Soy Sin Mi Idioma Nativo?: The Loss Of The Spanish Language And Its Effects On Identity, Wilzaid L. Santiago-Maldonado
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Language is a mechanism of cultural preservation. The history of language has two parts: 1. the technical aspects and 2. how it is diffused and/or becomes extinct. According to the U.S. Census Data, the Hispanic population has grown immensely over the past several decades, particularly from 1980-2020. Even so, there has been significant loss of the Spanish language. The researcher examined this phenomenon in two phases. First, 14 peer-reviewed articles published between 2008-2024 were assessed to determine emerging themes. Results showed that articles cited “the lack of knowledge/use” of Spanish and the “language/cultural dominance.” Second, the researcher conducted four focus …

[Objective] To employ macroporous resin for deodorization of kelp pulp. [Methods] The effects of macroporous resin type, deodorization temperature, and deodorization time on the deodorization of kelp pulp are explored through single -factor experiments, with the results of headspace -solid -phase microextraction/gas chromatography -mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC -MS) as an indicator. An electronic nose is used to analyze the differences in flavor of kelp pulp before and after the deodorization with macroporous resin. [Results] The optimal deodorization process for kelp pulp is deodorization with 7.3% AB -macroporous resin at 51 ℃ for 2 h.At these conditions, the removal rates of alcohols, aldehydes, …
