Effects Of Yoga And Mindfulness On Emotional Regulation, Behavior, And Teacher Burnout, Sara E. Smith Jan 2026

Effects Of Yoga And Mindfulness On Emotional Regulation, Behavior, And Teacher Burnout, Sara E. Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

This dissertation comprises three studies that examine the effects of physical activity, yoga, and mindfulness interventions on students' emotional regulation, behavior, and academic outcomes in rural Kentucky schools. These studies as a whole contribute to understanding how movement-based and mindfulness practices can enhance social-emotional and academic well-being in schools.

The first study describes the effects of classroom-based physical activity on student achievement and social-emotional well-being. Forty-five elementary students participated in a 6-week intervention with two 7-minute movement breaks per day. Results indicated statistically significant improvements in Reading (t(44) = 2.55, p < .001, d = .38), Math (t(44) = 4.63, p < .001, d = .69), and social-emotional competence (t(44) = 3.67, p < .001, d = .55). These findings demonstrate that brief, structured physical activity can meaningfully enhance academic and emotional outcomes when implemented by classroom teachers.

The second study shows the effects of a five-week …

Academic Departments As Microfoundations Of Institutional Governance, Karley A. Riffe, Meghan J. Pifer

Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications

Considerations of governance in US higher education do not typically include the academic department. This results in a knowledge gap about the role of these central organizing units of academic work in the governance of colleges and universities. Through the concept of microfoundations, we explore concrete ways in which departmental governance matters, how it may be challenging, and strategies for fostering effective governance within academic departments.

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The experiences of underrepresented minority (URM) students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs provide valuable insights into improving their retention and academic achievement. This study investigates how Black and Hispanic calculus students describe faculty-student interactions. Four students participated in a demographic survey and follow-up interviews, sharing their experiences with calculus learning. Using thematic coding guided by validation theory, the data revealed instructors’ academic practices that either validated or invalidated students’ participation in calculus classes. These practices include cultivating in-class conceptual support, promoting collaborative learning spaces, demonstrating out-of-class academic availability, acknowledging and integrating diverse student experiences, and encouraging metacognitive …

To gain an understanding of international student recruitment and retention in collegiate athletics, this study examines the motivations and decision-making processes of Chinese high school athletes and their parents in pursuing U.S. collegiate sport opportunities. Using the push–pull framework and an ecological perspective, it explores how individual aspirations, family priorities, institutional resources, and national policies shape transnational mobility. Semistructured focus group discussions with 10 athletes and eight parents revealed six key motivational themes and highlighted the influence of recent collegiate sport-related policy changes in China. The findings suggest that while both groups value U.S. sport pathways, athletes and parents may …

False Idols In The Early History Of International Taxation, Wei Cui Jan 2026

False Idols In The Early History Of International Taxation, Wei Cui

All Faculty Publications

A careful reading of recent scholarship on the early history of international taxation, especially on the League of Nations ’ work on ‘ double taxation ’ , ought to have dislodged many myths about this history. But more often than not, such scholarship is taken to offer mere details without altering our fundamental understanding. This chapter suggests that this reception refl ects a longstanding pattern in discourses about international taxation: participants perpetuate or cling onto narratives that are easily seen to be false. The chapter exposes this pattern by summarising evidence for four rarely-acknowledged conclusions about the League ’ s …

Unleashing Mass Entrepreneurship: Firm-Level Evidence On The Impact Of China’S Registered Capital Reform, Wei Cui, Mengying Wei Jan 2026

Unleashing Mass Entrepreneurship: Firm-Level Evidence On The Impact Of China’S Registered Capital Reform, Wei Cui, Mengying Wei

All Faculty Publications

A 2013 amendment of China’s Company Law allowed limited liability companies to form without any minimum equity requirement. Using a confidential taxpayer dataset, we causally identify the reform’s impact on the composition of new firms and their financing choices. Firmentry surged by 33%. Newfirms started with 31.6% lower assets but operated at similar scales as prior firms. While entrants’ average profitability remained the same, smaller entrants saw increased profitability post-reform, indicating entry by productive butwealth-constrained entrepreneurs. Consistent with a preference for debt over equity, new entrants displayed a 94% decline in equity and large increases in liabilities. This indicates that …

Objectives

Creating community is not only therapeutic—it has been described as essential. This study explores a process of community-building among people with lived and professional experience in the dementia field, during Walking the Talk for Dementia (WTD), a week-long, immersive event on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Absence of community can lead to fragmented support for both people living with dementia and their care partners and for those working in the field. Achieving a sense of community, however, can be complex.

Methods

A qualitative evaluation was conducted with 79 participants from 27 countries, incorporating pre-, during and post-event reflections. …

Density Dependence During Evolutionary Rescue Increases Extinction Risk But Does Not Prevent Adaptation, Laure Olazcuaga, Brett A. Melbourne, Scott W. Nordstrom, Ruth A. Hufbauer Jan 2026

Density Dependence During Evolutionary Rescue Increases Extinction Risk But Does Not Prevent Adaptation, Laure Olazcuaga, Brett A. Melbourne, Scott W. Nordstrom, Ruth A. Hufbauer

Publications, Reports and Presentations

Evolutionary rescue allows populations to adapt and persist despite severe environmental change. While well studied under density-independent conditions, the role of density dependence, including competition, remains unclear. Theoretical models offer conflicting predictions, with density dependence either increasing extinction risk or enhancing adaptation. We empirically tested how density dependence influences evolutionary rescue by exposing experimental populations to a stressful environment for six generations under density-dependent or independent conditions, with populations where either evolution was possible or was prevented by replacing individuals each generation. Density dependence suppressed population size and increased extinction risk, whereas density independence enabled rapid growth, especially in genetically …

Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations

The Point-in-Time (PIT) Count is a census of people experiencing both sheltered and unsheltered homelessness on a single night in January. The federal government requires this at least every other year as a condition of funding it distributes to Continuums of Care (CoCs), networks of government agencies and service providers that manage homelessness services and funding in specific regions. In 2025, all Oregon CoCs conducted an unsheltered count and submitted both unsheltered and sheltered PIT Counts data.

This report provides county-level unsheltered and sheltered totals for all Oregon counties and across the state, as well as the Housing Inventory Count …

Key To Spartina Of The West Coast Based On Vegetative Characteristics, Mary Pfauth, Mark D. Sytsma, Mitchell Kloer, Jennifer Riddle, Jacob Rose, Gabriel E. Campbell

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

In their natural condition, Pacific Coast estuaries have extensive open mudflats in the intertidal area that are important shorebird feeding habitat and are used for oystering and recreational fishing. Several non-native cordgrass species are invading Pacific estuaries and damaging these functions and uses. Early detection is critical to effective management of cordgrass infestation. This key is intended to provide an easy-to-use reference for quick identification of Spartina (synonym: Sporobolus) species on the Pacific coast. We choose to focus on vegetative characteristics here, since flowers are not always visible when it can be advantageous to survey.

This publication is intended to …

Holographic Sensors For The Detection Of Volatile Organic Compounds, Graceson Antony Jan 2026

Holographic Sensors For The Detection Of Volatile Organic Compounds, Graceson Antony

Doctoral

Volatile organic compound (VOC) monitoring at parts-per-million (ppm) concentration levels is essential for occupational safety, indoor air quality, and regulatory compliance. Although holographic gas sensors have been widely investigated, most operate in reflection mode as qualitative visual indicators, with limited quantitative evaluation of sensing mechanisms and scarce systematic demonstrations of repeatable multi-cycle validation for VOCs at ppm concentrations. A physics-based optimisation framework for transmission-mode holographic gas sensors which can bridge this gap has remained largely undeveloped.

This thesis presents the development and optimisation of real-time transmission-mode volume phase transmission holographic grating (VPTHG) sensors for ppm-level VOC detection. A comprehensive theoretical …

Titletown Madness: Title Insurance Through The Lens Of Tribal Jurisdiction And The Lasting Legacy Of Allotment, Nicholas Stamates Jan 2026

Titletown Madness: Title Insurance Through The Lens Of Tribal Jurisdiction And The Lasting Legacy Of Allotment, Nicholas Stamates

Marquette Law Review

American Property Law and Federal Indian Law have a conjoined history going back to Johnson v. MʻIntosh, 21 U.S. (8 Wheat.) 543 (1823), where the Supreme Court ruled that private citizens could not purchase aboriginal title from Indians. Decades later, the Dawes General Allotment Act of 1887 resulted in non-Indian fee simple landowners purchasing what the Federal Government deemed “surplus” federal land in the un-allotted former Indian land, which is still part of the Reservation’s legal jurisdiction. An unintended consequence of this process, which resulted in a checkerboard pattern of land title in Indian Reservations across the country, has recently …

Childhood Through Motion: Reimagining Everyday Mobility Corridors For Learning, Independence, And Exploration, Olivia Liljegren

City and Regional Planning

This project proposes the Childhood Through Motion (CTM) Framework, which reimagines how everyday mobility corridors can support children’s development through repeated engagement with integrated interventions along key neighborhood routes. Building on existing approaches such as Safe Routes to School and Playful Learning Landscapes, the framework integrates mobility, play, learning, and social interaction into a connected system of corridors and nodes distributed throughout a neighborhood street network. Rather than treating mobility, play, and learning as separate, the framework explores how developmental opportunities can be integrated into the public spaces children use every day.

The framework is organized through five guiding principles …

How Do Individual And Environmental Covariates Impact The Immune Response Of Deer Mice In Western Montana?, Rachel A. Throckmorton, Angela Luis

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Sin Nombre Virus (SNV) is an exceptional model system for studying wildlife disease because of how simple it is to capture, take samples, and obtain disease status from the primary host. Immune response is an important factor to consider when testing for SNV because it can affect susceptibility of the host as well as transmission of the virus. We examined individual and environmental conditions that may predict immune response and therefore possibly SNV transmission in wild populations. We investigated whether SNV infection status, reproductive status, sex, and season correlate with immune response through examining total white blood cell (WBC) counts …
