Multi-TeV gamma-ray emission around eHWC J1850+001 (a source from the first HAWC catalog of gamma-ray sources emitting above 56 TeV) is spatially coincident with the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) G32.64+0.53, powered by PSR J1849-0001. The absence of counterparts in radio, optical, and GeV energy ranges, contrasted with clear detections in X-rays and very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays, is indicative of a nonthermal leptonic origin for the nebula. We apply a systematic analysis pipeline, including a sophisticated model for the Galactic diffuse emission, to 2860 days of data from the HAWC Observatory. Our detailed analysis confirms that the ultra-high-energy (UHE) emission originates …

Pediatric Transthoracic Echocardiography, Mohamed Elsisy, Prerna Bansal

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Since cardiac sonography was introduced in the 1950s, echocardiography has become the first-line noninvasive imaging modality for evaluating cardiac anatomy, physiology, and hemodynamic abnormalities in neonates, infants, and children. Echocardiography is indispensable for diagnosing congenital heart disease (CHD) because of its widespread availability, real-time capability, and minimal adverse effects. Unlike adult echocardiography, pediatric echocardiography often requires a detailed understanding of congenital heart defects and specialized techniques for obtaining high-quality images in small children who may have difficulty remaining still. The reliability of a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) depends on the performer’s skills and knowledge, adherence to standardized pediatric echocardiography protocols, optimal …

Sudden Death In Athletes, Khashayar Farzam, Venkat Rajasurya, Mohamed Elsisy, Thaer Ahmad

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Sudden death in athletes is a tragic occurrence in sports medicine, cardiology, primary care, and pediatrics. By far, the most common cause of unexpected death in younger athletes during competition is cardiac disease, usually of congenital origin. However, the use of anabolic steroids, peptide hormones, and stimulants has led to the emergence of acquired heart disease in younger and middle-aged athletes. In contrast, sudden death in an older athlete is typically due to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.

Various congenital cardiac disorders occur in the general population. Most can be categorized as structural or nonstructural. Congenital structural heart disease generally affects …

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

The Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) is a central regulator of cardiac ion homeostasis and a validated target for heart failure. Yet, cardiotonic steroids used in clinical practice are limited by a narrow therapeutic window and pro-arrhythmic effects. Here, we identify Ro 41-0960 as a non-steroidal inhibitor of NKA with a distinct mechanistic profile. The compound inhibits NKA activity with IC50 values of 17.9 ± 1.1 µM for purified enzyme and https://doi.org/10.3 ± 1.1 µM in microsomal preparations. ATP-dependent activity measurements revealed a non-monotonic response in which inhibition was most pronounced at ATP concentrations below 4 mM and diminished …

Fifty Years After Estelle V. Gamble—Where Does Carceral Health Law Go From Here?, James René Jolin, Jenean Docter, Benjamin A. Barsky

Faculty Scholarship

Fifty years ago, the US Supreme Court decided Estelle v.Gamble—a landmark case commonly known for establishing a duty on the government to provide health services to incarcerated people, whether before or after conviction. In this column, we offer a brief critical reappraisal of Estelle by reviewing its demanding legal standard and identifying a set of related litigation barriers that stymie the availability of relief in federal court. Given these constraints, we argue for a carceral health law paradigm that moves beyond the current, dominant focus on litigation. We use Medicaid law and policy as a case study to explore the …
