Mechanisms Of Selective Attention In Working Memory, Modeled From Human Alpha Band Oscillations, Asal Nouri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Working memory (WM) enables the flexible representation of information over short intervals. It is established that WM performance can be enhanced by a retrospective cue presented during storage, yet the neural mechanisms responsible for this benefit are unclear. Here, we tested several explanations for retrospective cue benefits by quantifying changes in spatial WM representations reconstructed from alpha-band (8 - 12 Hz) EEG activity recorded from human participants before and after the presentation of a retrospective cue. This allowed us to track cue-related changes in WM representations with high temporal resolution. Our findings suggest that retrospective cues engage several different mechanisms …

Ph Dynamics Within The Drosophila Synaptic Cleft During Activity, Touhid Feghhi Jan 2023

Ph Dynamics Within The Drosophila Synaptic Cleft During Activity, Touhid Feghhi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Acute pH sensitivity of many neural mechanisms highlights the vulnerability of neurotransmission to the pH of the extracellular milieu. The dogma is that the synaptic cleft will acidify upon neurotransmission because the synaptic vesicles corelease neurotransmitters and protons to the cleft, and the direct data from sensory ribbon-type synapses support the acidification of the cleft. However, ribbon synapses have a much higher release probability than conventional synapses, and it’s not established whether conventional synapses acidify as well. To test the acidification of the cleft in the conventional synapse, we used genetically encoded fluorescent pH reporters targeted to the synaptic cleft …

Self-Touch In Henry James's Major Phase, James Martin Jan 2023

Self-Touch In Henry James's Major Phase, James Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The three novels of Henry James’s “major phase” have alienated many readers in James’s own time and today. I draw on the philosophical school of phenomenology, in particular the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and a recent extension by the philosopher Richard Kearney, to suggest that a lack of self-touch by characters in these novels has contributed in a significant but previously unnoticed way to many readers’ sense that these novels feel frustratingly intangible. I make a comparison to the instances of self-touch in other Edwardian novels to underline the difference. I suggest that James is putting forward a model of …

The Effect Of S81 Within The Minimal Essential Region (Mer) Of The Bnip3l Protein In Activating Organelle Degradation To Drive Fiber Lens Differentiation, Judy Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Lens differentiation begins with epithelial cells that undergo the process of cellular differentiation and remodelling into fiber cells (Bassnet et al., 2011; Menko 2002; Wride, 2011) that then will undergo terminal remodelling processes to eliminate their cellular organelles to achieve mature lens structure and transparency. We sought to determine if Serine 81, within the minimal essential region (MER) of the BNIP3L protein, is required for organelle elimination. Previous studies have shown that levels of phosphorylated P38 MAPK and ERK ½ peaked in the same region as phosphorylated S81 BNIP3L levels, the equatorial epithelium, where organelle degradation is initiated. The use …

There’S Something In The Water: Jaws And The Environment, William Carr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis presents an analysis of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the film’s depiction of nature. This analysis will show that the film derives horror from the depiction of nature encroaching on human spaces. Through the film’s depictions of shark attacks, it forces viewers to confront their own edibility. The filmmaking techniques place humans on the other side of the eater/eaten binary, and present humans a prey. Similarly, the depictions of environments show the presence of nature as a disruption to the film’s established visual style. This thesis asserts film analysis as a necessary tool in understanding the nature/culture binary and …
