Nutritional Knowledge Of Collegiate Track Athletes, Haleigh Risner Apr 2026

Nutritional Knowledge Of Collegiate Track Athletes, Haleigh Risner

Honors Theses

There are rising concerns on whether collegiate athletes are being diligent with their nutritional practices. With an increase in RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in sports) cases in athletes, their knowledge about their nutritional needs comes into question. Nutrition has a significant impact on athletic performance and the development in an athlete’s specialty. To assess the current knowledge of athletes, the track athletes of East Texas A&M University were asked to participate in a nutritional assessment to determine their knowledge of nutrition in regard to their sport. It was hypothesized that the majority of athletes surveyed would not possess adequate knowledge …

Enhancing E-Learning Recommendation Systems Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (Lda), Zanbaq Hikmet Thanon, Javad Salimi Sartakhti

Mesopotamian Journal of Big Data

Although the wide range of instructional materials, might overcome students and limit their capability to learn effectively, platform of education become important for providing personalized learning. Traditional recommendation systems (RS) try to resolve this issue; yet, they fail in understanding learning content semantically. This restriction makes it more difficult for them to deliver accurate, useful, and clear recommendations. The aim of this study is to enhance E-learning RS using topic modeling, specially the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method, to discover latent structures within educational content. The ``20 Newsgroups'' dataset that containing over 20,000 items across 20 categories used to evaluate …

Single-cell analysis of human triple-negative breast cancer revealed heterogeneous macrophage populations with opposing phenotypes - proinflammatory and proresolution of inflammation. Paradoxically, both subsets accumulated in therapy-refractory residual tumors but showed inverse correlations across patients, suggesting mutually exclusive resistance mechanisms. Inflammatory macrophages localized preferentially to epithelial-like tumors, whereas proresolution macrophages were enriched in mesenchymal-like tumors. Mouse models faithfully recapitulated these patterns. After chemoimmunotherapy, mesenchymal-like tumors expanded proresolution macrophages through phagocytosis/efferocytosis, ω-3 fatty acid uptake, and resolvin production. Macrophage-secreted C1q emerged as a principal antagonist of T cell function by targeting mitochondria and inducing metabolic dysfunction. By contrast, epithelial-like tumors accumulated inflammatory …

Beyond The Evidence: The Cervical Collar As Cultural Artefact, Tim Nutbeam Apr 2026

Beyond The Evidence: The Cervical Collar As Cultural Artefact, Tim Nutbeam

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Cervical collar application remains prevalent in trauma care despite the absence of evidence of neurological benefit from spinal immobilisation. Clinical behaviour in this area has proven resistant to change, and the persistence of the collar requires explanation beyond the evidential debate alone. The fear of cervical injury has origins that predate clinical practice. Neurobiological preparedness theory suggests that threat associations linked to survival-relevant stimuli are more rapidly acquired and more durably maintained than other learned fears; the cervical region is a plausible candidate for this form of prepared response. This disposition has been reinforced by centuries of cultural practice: …

Experiences Of Culturally Engaging Advising Among South Korean Doctoral Students: A Collaborative Autoethnography, Sarang Kim, Hanna Kim, Seyoung Hong, Eun Jung Paik

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Empirical research on culturally engaging advising (CEA) for international graduate students, particularly in relation to their cultural backgrounds and identities, remains limited. This study addresses this gap by employing collaborative autoethnography and drawing on CEA and intersectionality frameworks to examine the experiences of four South Korean women doctoral students in the social sciences. Findings highlight challenges these students face due to their intersectional identities as Asian, Korean women and non-native English speakers. Findings also demonstrate ways in which CEA can be tailored to suit their needs. This study contributes to comparative and international higher education by offering insights on supporting …

Missing Children: The Underrepresentation Of Youth In Mental Health Data, Sammie Mcdonald Apr 2026

Missing Children: The Underrepresentation Of Youth In Mental Health Data, Sammie Mcdonald

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

While research continues to grow, it is apparent that there are still gaps in knowledge. This research was inspired by my ongoing internship at Allen Child Protection Center, where I have seen children left behind for not recognizing an outdated radio during cognitive testing, as well as my experience as a fraternal twin with a 10 year diagnosis gap between me and my brother. This led me to investigate diagnostic disparities in children’s mental health data.

To better understand if children are experiencing mental health diagnosis disparities, I am analyzing 9 waves of data from the Substance Abuse and Mental …

Feminization Poverty: Comparing The United States And Afghanistan, Molly Cue, Carly Henrickson, Lauren Classen, Swarupa Evans, Lauren Huston

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Feminization poverty is a prevalent worldwide issue containing many layers such as societal norms, single-mothered household, the gender wage gap, unpaid care work, and cost of childcare. When comparing the United States and Afghanistan, there are similarities in these issues. Both countries live in primarily patriarchal societies, which heavily contributes to feminization poverty. In the United States, over 14.8 million women are currently living in poverty compared to roughly 25 million women in Afghanistan. There are some strategic interventions utilized to fight feminization poverty in both countries. Therefore, the objective of this project is to compare the effectiveness of these …

Women's Access To Education: A Global Perspective, Olivia Clausen, Lillie-Kay Colby, Ellie-Lynn Colby Apr 2026

Women's Access To Education: A Global Perspective, Olivia Clausen, Lillie-Kay Colby, Ellie-Lynn Colby

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Access to education for women has been restricted in various ways across the globe throughout history. Many of these restrictions have led to gender disparities in access to work, which pushes women into more vulnerable situations, such as poverty, abuse, or forced marriages. The goal of this research is to raise awareness and knowledge about women’s and girls’ education in South Sudan, given its 93% illiteracy rate among women. According to UNESCO, among the 84% of countries that legally protect the right to education, only 57% explicitly guarantee it without discrimination on the basis of sex and/or gender. Education for …

The Importance Of Education: A Comparison Of Educational Systems In The United States And South Sudan, Allie Haughenbury, Faith Defenbaugh, Emma Randecker, Hadley Farrell, Haylea Tillman

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

The significance of education in creating opportunities for individuals has been established as important to both individual growth and national development. The purpose of this project is to assess the role of education by comparing the educational system in the United States with that of South Sudan in terms of structure, accessibility, and barriers. The U.S. has a well developed educational system with access to public education for (almost) all children, whereas children in South Sudan face significant challenges to receiving an education. These challenges include a lack of infrastructure, a lack of trained educators, a lack of resources, and …

Exploring Concerns About Discretion And Disparity In Second Look Sentencing, Douglas A. Berman Apr 2026

Exploring Concerns About Discretion And Disparity In Second Look Sentencing, Douglas A. Berman

Akron Law Review

This essay explores the emergence of “second look” sentencing laws in the United States, which allow judicial review of previously imposed prison sentences under certain circumstances. Highlighting the expansion of these laws, the essay examines the broad discretion granted to judges and prosecutors in deciding when and how to reduce prison sentences against the backdrop of an earlier era of structured sentencing reforms aimed at regulating sentencing discretion and reducing disparities. Somewhat ironically, the rigidity and severity of some structured sentencing reforms have contributed to modern mass incarceration to engender the emerging “second look” sentencing movement.

The essay details various …

How Much Control Should We Have Over Our Social Media Feeds?: Reflections On A Lesson For High School Students, Daniel G. Krutka, Edward Henry Apr 2026

How Much Control Should We Have Over Our Social Media Feeds?: Reflections On A Lesson For High School Students, Daniel G. Krutka, Edward Henry

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

This paper describes a week-long high school lesson designed to help students understand and reclaim agency over their algorithmically curated social media feeds. Drawing on Nicholas Carr's framework of media's three functions — message creation, selection, and transmission — the lesson traces how algorithms displaced human editorial judgment beginning with Facebook's 2006 News Feed. Through guided inquiry, social media diaries, and platform comparison charts, students examined how much control they have, and should have, over what they see online. The lesson aims to foster critical algorithmic awareness and more intentional social media practices among young people navigating an increasingly automated …

Argumentative Links In Surat Al-Hujurat Pragmatic Study, Meshal Bin Fayhan Bin Ballash Al-Osaimi Apr 2026

Argumentative Links In Surat Al-Hujurat Pragmatic Study, Meshal Bin Fayhan Bin Ballash Al-Osaimi

UB Journal for Humanities

Argumentation is a linguistic act marked by links, tools, and mechanisms whose primary function is to direct the utterance in an argumentative direction. Among these mechanisms are argumentative links, which relate to the concerns of argumentative theory at the linguistic level, and whose origin is attributed to both Decroe and Anscomber. These links not only have a traditional grammatical function, but also have a guiding function for the argument. They also achieve coherence and compatibility in the text being addressed, enabling arguments to flow in succession, serving a specific outcome, whether explicit or implicit. Surat Al-Hujurat contains a group of …

Tremor Modulation: A Systematic Review Of Resetting By Single-Pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation , Handan Uzunçakmak Uyanik, Çağri Mesut Temuçi̇n

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Tremor arises from mechanical, reflex, or central oscillatory mechanisms. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can transiently perturb ongoing tremor and enables the quantitative assessment of phase resetting, offering circuit-level insight into tremor types. Although numerous studies have applied TMS-induced resetting, the findings have not been systematically reviewed. This study systematically reviews human studies evaluating TMS-induced tremor resetting across tremor types.

Materials and methods: A systematic search of PubMed and Google Scholar identified human studies using TMS to perturb tremor or rhythmic movement. Search terms included “tremor resetting,” “resetting of tremor,” “tremor phase shift,” “tremor phase reset,” “transcranial magnetic stimulation,” and …
