Political Costs And Strategic Corporate Communication, Christine Cuny, Jungbae Kim, Mihir N. Mehta
Political Costs And Strategic Corporate Communication, Christine Cuny, Jungbae Kim, Mihir N. Mehta
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
When subject to public scrutiny, do firms strategically use advertising to reduce expected political costs? Advertising can ease public concerns, thereby reducing the pressure on politicians to act harshly against scrutinized firms and their industries. We use repeated congressional testimony by industry members as a novel way to identify political scrutiny. Our central finding is that scrutinized industries increase their advertising spending 132 percent more in the electorates of politicians overseeing the hearings than in the electorates of other politicians. Further, strategic advertising is complementary to income-decreasing accounting choices and a substitute for lobbying. Overall, our study sheds light on …
Spiritual Gentrification Amid The Rise Of Platform Urbanism: "Wanghong Temples" And Emerging Buddhist Cultural Economies In Tianzhu Road, Hangzhou, China, Han Zhang, Junxi Qian, Lily Kong
Spiritual Gentrification Amid The Rise Of Platform Urbanism: "Wanghong Temples" And Emerging Buddhist Cultural Economies In Tianzhu Road, Hangzhou, China, Han Zhang, Junxi Qian, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This study scrutinizes how the Tianzhu Road in the Lingyin Community - a peri-urban area in Hangzhou ringed by a cluster of temples that constitutes a distinct spiritual enclave - has been reworked through a two-phase gentrification process driven by the spiritual aesthetics and platform logics. Drawing on a two-month ethnography and media content analysis, this study conceptualizes spiritual gentrification as a spiritual aesthetics and culture-oriented recalibration of urban space in which spiritual elements operate as symbolic capital, attracting culturally motivated entrepreneurs and aligning the spiritual atmosphere with slow-life values as an alternative to urban modernity. In particular, platform urbanism …

The Restorative Effects Of Nature Exposure Via Virtual Reality On Well-Being, Self-Control, And Working Memory, Zoey K. Y. Eun, Hwajin Yang, Nicole R. Y. Chen, Andree Hartanto
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The psychological benefits of nature exposure are vital for well-being in an increasingly urbanised world. While previous research has consistently demonstrated the restorative effects of natural environments on both physical and psychological health, findings on virtual nature simulations remain mixed, possibly due to the limited immersive quality of conventional displays. Virtual reality (VR), however, provides immersive visual and auditory engagement, making it a promising alternative for delivering nature-based experiences when direct exposure to real nature environments is unavailable. The present study examined the effects of VR-simulated nature on attentional and emotional restoration and self-control capacity, using a preregistered, within-subjects experimental …

A Stress-Induced Digital Escapism Framework For Understanding The Link Between Stress And Problematic Social Media Use, Hwajin Yang, Frosch Yi Xuan Quek, Xiu Hui Salin Yap, Yue Qi Germaine Tng, Gilaine Rui Ng
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Given that stress is a significant risk factor for problematic social media use, understanding the underlying psychological mechanisms is essential. We introduce the Stress-Induced Digital Escapism (SIDE) framework, which posits that negative internal emotional responses to external stressors may increase reliance on maladaptive emotion regulation strategies that fail to alleviate distress. These processes may, in turn, strengthen escapism motives that lead to seeking emotional relief through compulsive social media use. Using structural equation modeling (N = 238), we examined three integrated psychological pathways—negative stress reactions, maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, and escapism motives—as sequential mediators linking external demands to problematic social …

Research "Junkification" Is Caused By Researchers, Not Journals, Simon Sebastian Groome, Jose C. Yong, Norman P. Li
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Concerns about declining research quality have increasingly been framed as “junkification,” whereby academic output expands in volume while declining in epistemic value. A recent paper by Rhodes and Linnenluecke (2025) attributes this trend to changes in publishing, arguing that research quality erodes as journals and publishers become increasingly oriented toward output quantity and metrics, driven by monetization. In 2009, Nobel Laureate James Watson remarked that scientific publishing in the mid-twentieth century was both easier and of a higher standard than today (Web of Stories, 2017). If publishing is much easier of late, as Rhodes and Linnenelucke (R&L) argued, then how …

Not Just Anyone: Living Situation Is Indirectly Associated With Cognitive Impairment Via Depressive Symptoms, Chin Hong Tan, Jacinth Jia Xin Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Objectives: Socially isolated individuals are at a greater risk of cognitive decline. We examined whether this relationship is dependent on the type of household living situation, living alone or living with others (spouse/ partner or relative/friend), and the indirect effects of depression. Methods: We evaluated 10,545 cognitively normal (CN, mean age = 71.6) and 9334 individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI, mean age = 72.9) cross-sectional data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center. Participants' living situation was classified as living alone, living with spouse/partner, or living with a relative/friend. Cognitive function and depression were assessed by a neuropsychological battery and …

Adolescent Social Media Use And Associations With Parental Screen Time Practices, Joseph A. Simon, Josiah Leong
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The rise of electronic use among younger generations has raised concerns surrounding the developmental and behavioral effects of increasing usage. While past research has found some associations between screen time and mental health, there is less knowledge about how parenting practices influence these developmental and behavioral patterns of social media use. Our study examined longitudinal trajectories of social media use from ages 9 to 13 among 9,211 subjects at baseline, year 1, year 2 and later a complete 3-year parent questionnaire on screen time reward, limiting, and monitoring to then examine whether parenting behaviors were associated with previous social media …

Are Anti-Corruption Sanctions The New Fcpa? A Comparison Of The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, The Foreign Extortion Prevention Act, And Sanctions, Karen Peters-Van Essen
Faculty Law Review Articles
With the rise of globalization, international corruption has been linked to a host of economic and social ills, including inter-state conflict. By 2021, the U.S. government had identified corruption for the first time as a national security threat that required a broader range of inter- and cross- governmental policy tools to address the identified scope of the problem. This national security focus was reinforced with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has been seen as being facilitated by corrupt oligarchs. To be sure, the U.S. had decades prior passed the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which prohibits U.S. businesses …

Intravenous Buprenorphine Reversed Opioid-Induced Respiratory Depression Without Precipitating Withdrawal In Emergency Department Patients, Anthony Spadaro, Nicholas Imperato, Jaclyn Scalgione, Cynthia Santos
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Objective: Buprenorphine is a high-affinity partial agonist that can displace full opioid agonists and could be used to reverse opioid-induced respiratory depression. There is scant evidence to support the use of buprenorphine in an acute opioid overdose to reverse respiratory depression in the era of high fentanyl prevalence in the drug supply. This is a case series of four patients with signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose who showed clinical improvement after receiving intravenous buprenorphine.
Method: A case series of adult emergency department patients treated at a single urban academic medical center was reviewed by the authors, who determined …

On July 30, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on imports from Brazil and sanctioned a sitting Brazilian Supreme Court Justice, both partially because of Brazil’s online content moderation decisions. This is an extreme, but not an isolated event: worldwide, legislators and regulators struggle to craft public policies that address problems of disinformation and online harassment while protecting the freedom of expression—leading to increasing international confrontations. One key question in content moderation is content adjudication—or who is responsible for deciding what type of speech violates the law and should be taken down (or not). This article contributes to …

Place, Democracy, Law, And The Necessity Of Local News, Erin C. Carroll
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In 2025, the painter Amy Sherald pulled her show American Sublime from the Smithsonian after the museum considered removing a painting of a transgender Statue of Liberty to avoid angering President Trump. The Baltimore Museum of Art stepped in, and it was important that it did. American Sublime needs to be seen in person. It comprises dozens of portraits of Black Americans—a farmer, a bicyclist, a balloon-holder, a child on a playground slide. The portraits are dignified, beautiful, warm, and alluring. They are, in a word, human.
In the gallery, the paintings were hung low on the walls to increase …
Make Fashion Circular: Extending Brand Loyalty By Extending The Life Of Garments, Madelyn Schillinger
Make Fashion Circular: Extending Brand Loyalty By Extending The Life Of Garments, Madelyn Schillinger
Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research targets the fashion industry and its journey towards sustainability and circularity, specifically through the rise of clothing resale. It discusses the environmental impact of the overall fashion industry, as well as how secondhand shopping can offset the production of new items. This research also compares third party marketplaces with private, brand-operated resale platforms, exploring how each one benefits both the environment and consumers. Each resale model provides variety in user experiences, profits, and sustainability outcomes. These findings reveal that peer-to-peer platforms have helped normalize secondhand shopping, but brand resale initiatives have a greater control over sustainability and customer …

This research explores the rise of dirty soda in the United States and how a simple customizable beverage evolved into a cultural ritual shaped by social media, treat culture, and the lifestyle norms of the LDS community. It analyzes the cultural meaning behind Swig’s popularity, including how influencers and online aesthetics transformed the drink into a status symbol and daily indulgence. This study also compares U.S. and Spanish cultural values, including individualism, indulgence, and social rituals, to determine how Swig must adapt its product, branding, and store model for successful expansion into Spain. Findings reveal that while dirty soda thrives …
The Role And Professional Obligations Of Crown Attorneys In Disposition Hearings For Not Criminally Responsible Accused At Provincial Review Boards, Andrew Flavelle Martin
The Role And Professional Obligations Of Crown Attorneys In Disposition Hearings For Not Criminally Responsible Accused At Provincial Review Boards, Andrew Flavelle Martin
Dalhousie Law Journal
Crown attorneys perform several different roles, each accompanied by a set of professional obligations. R v Boucher makes it clear that the role and professional obligations of the Crown attorney at trial are to pursue justice, not to win. Much less clear are the role and professional obligations of Crown attorneys at review board disposition hearings for not criminally responsible (NCR) accused under Part XX.1 of the Criminal Code. In this article, I do two things. First, I canvass and synthesize the case law, legislative proceedings, and literature to identify the correct role of Crown attorneys at disposition hearings. I …
Putting Labour Law To Work: Imperative Of Race Conscious Labour Law, Harshini Arumugam
Putting Labour Law To Work: Imperative Of Race Conscious Labour Law, Harshini Arumugam
Dalhousie Law Journal
History shows that race and labour are deeply connected in Canada. For the labour movement to advance racial equality, it must contend with this reality. Through a critical race analysis, this paper examines how race-evasive approaches in labour laws and practices have contributed to systemic racial inequality. It argues that race-conscious strategies are essential for addressing the specific experiences and needs of racialized workers. By leveraging existing legal tools and intentionally incorporating race-conscious approaches into areas such as collective bargaining, the collective agreement, and the duty of fair representation, labour law can be a powerful mechanism for achieving racial justice …

Enameling Coating Of Pipes: Thermal Proprieties And Corrosion Tests, Signo Reis, Genda Chen, Mike Koenigstein, Liang Fan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Enamel coating on pipelines can be done in several ways such as the wet process, plasma spray, and electrostatic process. Wet process requires little capital expenses and provides an acceptable finish for industrial applications particularly when the part to be coated is small. Electrostatic process of enamel powder is most promising to coating large pipelines in field conditions. The enamel coating applied by the electrostatic process is very consistent and smooth since each particle is glass only. However, the powder is very fragile until fired and the charge retention is lowered in high humidity conditions. Coupons cut from a full-size …

Emergency Medicine and Trauma
BACKGROUND: Assessment of triage procedures is crucial for improving patient care. Most programs evaluate under- and over-triage using the ISS-based Cribari Matrix Method (CMM), but tools such as the critical-intervention-based Need for Trauma Intervention (NFTI) and its time-critical modified version (mNFTI) focus on identifying patients who need immediate resources. The mNFTI has seen limited empirical inquiry in assessing triage procedures.
OBJECTIVE: To assess accuracy and agreement rates between mNFTI and CMM.
METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective cohort study compared triage classifications in trauma patients using 2019 trauma registry data from trauma centers across 5 trauma systems in Ohio, United States. Patients …

Saying What The Law Might Be? Courts, Geofence Warrants, And The Fourth Amendment Labyrinth, Ciara Lavin
Cardozo Law Review
Since 2016, Google has received thousands of geofence warrant requests from law enforcement, requesting Google to scan through its vast database of users to identify who and what devices entered into, or exited out of, a set of coordinates in a specified period of time. Several cases began making their way through the federal courts to delineate the legality of such warrants—with challenges spanning the vast amount of data they search, their relative accuracy, and whether they comported with the Fourth Amendment. Then, in the summer of 2024, two federal appellate courts handed down decisions just weeks apart: the Fourth …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study investigates the role of directional filtering in the analysis of spray behaviour using two full cone nozzles (65° and 75°) emitting aqueous sprays under atmospheric conditions. A hybrid computational–experimental framework was applied, using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with Discrete Phase Model (DPM) and Rosin-Rammler distribution in ANSYS Fluent, validated against Shadowgraph and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The sensitivity of directional filtering to the effects of spray angle and flow rate (1.75 and 3.5 L/min), were also done. Upward-filtered droplets consistently exhibited greater breakup than both raw and downward-filtered data due to gravitational opposition and longer air exposure. …

Doecke, Pratishtha Chatterjee, Steve Pedrini, Hamid R. Sohrabi, Nicholas J. Ashton, Henrik Zetterberg, Manohar L. Garg, Kaj Blennow, Ralph N. Martins
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Alterations in plasma sphingomyelin (SM) levels have been reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD), pointing to disturbances in lipid metabolism that may contribute to disease pathogenesis. Neuronal damage in early AD triggers tau release into central and peripheral systems. Despite influence from peripheral contributions, alterations in plasma total-tau (T-tau) remain valuable in indicating AD-related neurodegeneration. Investigating relationships between SM metabolism and tau release during preclinical AD may uncover important biochemical processes and support advancing early non-invasive detection and treatment approaches. This cross-sectional study investigated cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults from the KARVIAH cohort, grouped by cortical amyloid-β (Aβ) status through positron …

Momentary Assessment Of Mental Imagery And Pain-Related Psychological Factors In Youth With Chronic Pain, Jemma Todd, Brydee Pickup, Julie Ji, Alice Norton, Emily A Holmes, Louise Sharpe
School of Psychology
Mental imagery is a powerful cognitive process implicated in various psychological disorders, yet its role in chronic pain remains underexplored. This study examined the temporal relationship between mental imagery, pain-related psychological constructs, and pain outcomes in young adults with chronic pain. A sample of 121 university students with chronic pain completed baseline assessments of mental imagery (tendency, ability, intrusive imagery), pain-related psychological constructs (interpretation bias, fear of progression, pain anxiety), and general psychological constructs (depression, anxiety, stress, emotion regulation difficulties, trauma symptoms). Participants then completed an ecological momentary assessment delivered by smartphone app 3 times daily for 1 week, reporting …

Threat-Related Mental Imagery Reduces Endogenous Pain Modulation In Healthy Individuals, Julie L. Ji, Meghan Whitehouse, Sam Mugglestone, Sam W. Hughes
School of Psychology
Mental imagery-based simulations of threat can evoke “as-if-real” emotional and motivational responses, which may alter top-down pain processing. This study investigated the impact of mental imagery simulations of threat on endogenous pain modulation in n = 71 healthy participants using a cuff-pressure algometry protocol. In block one, participants were assessed on their baseline pain detection threshold (PDT), pressure pain tolerance (PTT), and their conditioned pain modulation (CPM) responses. In the second block, participants underwent the same procedures again but were randomly allocated to imagine the dominant leg cuff as being made of bubble-wrap (benign imagery condition; n = 36) or …

Legal System Support Of Crime Survivors And Attitudes On Justice, Izabella Leblanc
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Researchers have demonstrated the impact of victimization on mental health, and survivor dissatisfaction with legal processes and services. Recent literature supports the efficacy of restorative justice programs that started in response to retributive justice and its inability to directly address survivor harm. Thus, the current study examined how crime survivors perceive legal system support and attitudes towards restorative justice, with an undergraduate sample recruited from UTC’s SONA system and an online cloud-survey sample. Participants completed a survey that asked about their victimization experience(s), and legal system and restorative justice attitudes. Analyses examined mean differences between non-victims and victims, and subjective …

This research developed the Occupational Values Inventory (OVI), a 30-item measure that expands the content coverage of work values by linking into a broad range of O*NET occupational descriptors, including Work Activities and Work Contexts, along with salary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The OVI assesses 11 work values—Interpersonal, Outdoor, Physical, Leadership, Salary, Prestige, Variety, Interest, Work Hours, Knowledge Utilization, and Autonomy—providing an updated and refined coverage of work values relevant to people and occupations in the modern labor market. Study 1 (N = 768) developed and refined the OVI’s scales using conceptual and psychometric criteria, also reporting …

Alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) are consistent intrasexual differences in behavior that maximize reproductive success through different means. In corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops), smaller males mimic female visual morphology (hereafter sneakers) to steal fertilizations from nest-building parental males (hereafter nesting males). We investigated whether this visual mimicry effectively deceived 47 nesting males across 4 sites by quantifying 2 agonistic responses (attack latency and attack frequency) to models depicting unfamiliar females, sneakers and rival nesting males. Contrary to expectations, nesting males exhibited faster agonistic responses towards female models, with lower attack latencies compared with both male types. Additionally, the relationship between model …

The relationship between international business (IB) and sustainability is a complex and multifaceted one. Multinational enterprises (MNEs) both affect and are affected by the social, economic, and ecological (green environment) context in which they are embedded.1 As such, the study of how IB activity influences sustainability and the way that sustainability, in turn, impacts IB, involves incorporating a wide range of drivers, actors, processes, and outcomes. At the same time, sustainability challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource scarcity, economic and social inequality and others, are increasingly systemic, multilevel, and intertwined with geo economic, biophysical and governance dynamics …
